Car Talk › Re: Changing Exhaust Camshaft On 03 Accord by adanny01(op): 10:48pm On Nov 30, 2015
I finally got to change the camshaft yesterday. It was an easy job that i had no courage to embark on my own so i asked my mechanic to do for me. It was schedule for early in the morning so that we dont have to let the car cool. So the job was done at my house.

Am sorry, i didnt take any pictures.

A bit of background on the subject. I did some research and found out this is a serious problem affecting most Honda K24A4 engine and others. My mechanic confirmed that some few days ago, he worked on a similar car and mine was small compared to the other car. Research did mention that most people changed the exhaust camshaft and rocker arms. The last time i opened the cover i didnt see any wearing of the rollers on the rocker arms that make contact with the camshaft. So i decided i will be fine with only the camshaft. Besides, since the engine is prone to such wear, most camshafts i hav seen at the Apo mechanic village Abj had either worn or showing initial signs. So getting a complete one was difficult.

Anyways, after installing, we had to readjust the valves back to stock as i used smaller guage last time to take care of the worn lobes. The specs were
Intake 23+- 2mm
Exh 30+-2mm

Valve guage available to me this time had only 20, 25 and 30mm. So i used 25mm for intake and 30mm for exhaust.

Result was very bad as the valves became noisier than before the work started. I was confused why but only thought my mechanic probably did do the settings well. So i decided to reguage the valves myself with great care and time.

I worked on the guage this morning which took me several hours. The result wasnt much different.

Now my thoughts are that the rollers of the rocker arms that male contact with the lobe might have worn too. Valve noise is anoyying so i have scheduled to open the cover again tomorrow. There was one rocker arm that had too much play which i reguaged a number of times but wont stop the noise.

This time i have no 28mm to make it tighter. The only thing i can do is use 25mm but with more play then check with 30mm to make sure am in the range.

Another problem i encountered of recent was a pinging sound. Even after this job, its still there especially with driving with. My suspicion is carbon deposites

Hi Adanny01,

Another symptom that could help you determine if it's a low charge is if the right centre vent cools more than the left.
I had this happen when my system was low, charged it up and it disappeared.
The condenser looks compromised though.
Yea, it is as you described.

During the rainy season when it was cold but driving with closed windows, when i turn on the A/C to cool down air in the car after sometime, condensation appears like fumes comes out from extreme right to the last vent on the left in that order.

I thought is probably be cause the far right vent is closest to the fan motor and others follow suit according to distance from the fan motor.

I will check the charge first.

I want to buy a foreign used (tokunboh) sedan car. My preferences are Mazda 6, Nissan Altima/Maxima, Honda Accord or Mitsubishi Gallant. 2007 - 2010 models only. My budget is N1.2m. Pls if you have any car for sale that meets the above specs, pls share your number, and I'll give you a call right away.
Like oga above, i will say buy the Accord. But i wonder how or where you will find those cars within ur budget. Especially the Honda and Nissan will be an uphill task.

A weak compressor could cause same symptoms.
Yes sir. A weak pump might give low compression at idle but improve at higher RPM. However, a weak compressor is also masked by low refrigerant charge if i have not mistaken it for another.

By the day the pics below show my condenser.
Pic 1 shows the upper part
Pic 2 shows damage at lower left side by a chicken i hit on high speed.
Pic 3 shows right lower side

The lower side which looks verybad is from the part of the bumper that is exposed.

Car Talk › Is Your A/C Very Cool While Driving And Warm At Idle? by adanny01(op): 8:52pm On Nov 28, 2015
One thing i have noticed with my 03 Accord is that contrary to what it was before the A/C is very cool while driving and lose the cooling efficiency at idle. The hot season is here so i need more cooling than i am getting now.

I sought to find out why?

The usual first problem is dirty cabin air filter. In my case, the filter had been removed by previous owner and i never got to replace it like i promised myself to do. Besides, its not as if the A/C doesnt cool at all so the problem lies elsewhere.

Another problem could be low refrigerant charge. My research on this says there must have been a leakage. I will have the charge level checked but am scared on this. My reason is that most mechanics are very selfish and untruthfull. Its possible that the guy might check and see it ok but because he wants some money he will say its low and then overcharge it just for some bucks and then i have more problems. There is a possibility of recharging with fake refrigerant too. I will make sure i know how to check the charge levels before heading to the shop.

Compressor clutch is one thing that can go bad. I feel my clutch is fine. Thats because one of our office cars an 06 Corolla has a bad clutch. The car cools but stops cooling erratically and mostly at higher speeds. It cools better and steady at idle but during acceleration it stops cooling and on high engine rev too. This situation is opposite to mine.

Lastly, the A/C condenser is a very important part of the cooling system. The condenser in simple terms dispels the heat the system extracts from the car interior. The refrigerant will be hot when it leaves the evaporator and is supposed to get cooled at the condenser then recirculate. But if refrigerant doesnt get properly cooled, the system wont work efficiently.

3 things in my knowledhe will stop efficient cooling of refrigerant.
First is dirt clogging up the condenser coil/fins preventing air flow.
Second is the bending of most of the fins also preventing airflow
Third is inadequate or lack of air flow by the cooling fan/fans.

In summary, the condenser needs airflow and anything that prevents or reduce airflow through the condenser will affect the whole system's efficiency.

In my case, it made perfect sense when i looked at my condenser. Most of the fins are bent. Infact one bad portion i remember was bent when i hit a chicken on high speed. The chicken broke my bumper grill and vent straight to the condenser bending the all coils and fins it made contact with. Alot of the fins are bent and some have broken out so i suppose the cooling fans will not be able to get proper air flow through the condenser. Thus, my loss of cooling efficiency at idle but improves at motion because air hits the condenser directly cooling it better than at idle.

SOLUTION
The best is to replace the condenser. Optionally, the fins are light weight and thin so they can be straightened to create better airflow.

Because i dont want to lose the original refrigerant in my car, i will go for the straightening. Its not accessable with bumper in place so at the appropriate time the bumper has to come off and a lot of painstaking effort will be made to straighten all bent fins.

Below are pictures of typical condenser with bent fins and straightening.

not me, those who are using two batteries on a 1.2kva system are likely using it because they need to make up 24v.

if it is a 12v system, then they are using it to add more back up time.
I think they were refering to me but i use one battery.

Infact the battery i use was given to me by a friend who bought 2 of them but later purchased a 900va 12v inverter with 20a charger. We realised he couldnt charge both batteries well with 20a so he disconnected one and let me have it.

Its either he gets a 40a charger or manage one.

When next am buying an inverter, now i know that its charger is as important as the battery bank.

I have realised too that it is better to have a 48v system running on 4 12v batteries than a 24v on the same battery bank even if the charging capacity is same.

all these using 2 batteries on a 1.2kva modified sinewave inverter? it is more impressive than i thought, i was only thinking of using it for fan at night.
Point of correction. I have only 1 12v 200ah battery with 1.2kva 20a modified sinewave inverter. The battery wasn't even bought new.

I get well over 12hrs of back up when i manage the power consumption well.

My family knows the connection well and everyone goes into power saving mode once mains is off. All power sockets in the house is directly mains so we know when the lights on the sockets of inverter or fridge goes off. The drill i taught them is to turn off all lights and fan not being used immediately mains go off.

Politics › Re: A Detailed Analysis On Why Hon James Faleke Should Be The APC Gov Candidate by adanny01(m): 10:13pm On Nov 24, 2015
TonyeBarcanista:
Since the death of Audu Abubakar, the Governorship candidate of APC and the leading candidate in the yet-to-be concluded Kogi state Governorship election, tongues have been wagging and opinions have been divided on what should be the next line with respect to the said election. To some, the election should be outrightly cancelled because the Governorship candidate of APC is gone. To some others, the APC should be disqualified for having 'No Candidate', while some others opined that the APC should nominate a new governorship candidate to complete the process.

Firstly, the election can't be cancelled because INEC has NO power according to the Electoral Act (2010) and the 1999 Constitution to cancel any election when declared. It lies with the COURT. The only way election can be cancelled is when both the Governorship and Deputy Governorship candidates of a political party dies. In this case, the Deputy Governorship candidate of APC, James Faleke is still alive. Hence, INEC has no choice but to continue with the process.

Secondly, APC followed the legal process in the nomination of Audu Abubakar and Hon James Faleke as the Governorship and Deputy Governorship candidates respectively. The Electoral Act never prescribe disqualification of political party on account of death of its Governorship or Deputy Governorship candidate. Considering that the Electoral Act and Supreme Court judgement maintained that political parties not candidates stand for election, it simply means APC remains in the race and in pole position to form new Kogi state government when Idris Wada's tenure elapse despite the demise of Audu.

Why Hon James Faleke Should Succeed Audu
That established, the next is who should succeed Audu Abubakar as APC candidate? Let us recall that the Electoral Act and Constitution was silent on what should happen in the event that a Governor-elect denounce his mandate before his inauguration as at 1998. When Atiku Abubakar rescinded his mandate for the VP candidate of Segun Obasanjo of PDP, INEC felt there was need for a fresh PDP candidate for a new election. PDP and the Adamawa state Deputy-Gov-elect Boni Haruna as then was went to court. The SC ruled that PDP won the election with Atiku/Haruna as candidates, and in the eyes of the law, Atiku was 'dead'. Hence, Haruna should replace Atiku as PDP Governorship candidate and be sworn-in as Adamawa state Governor. After the judgement, the Electoral Act and Constitution were amended to reflect the SC interpretation. In this situation, considering the fact that the law allows for the Deputy to succeed his/her boss in the event of death of the Governor-elect (after election has been concluded) and the Governor (after inauguration), it is only normal and in accordance with the positions of the SC judgements and the law tthat Hon James Faleke, the APC Kogi state Deputy Governorship candidate be upgraded to the substantive Governorship-candidate of APC, while the party nominates a new running mate.

The Position of Running Mate Is For Purpose Like This
We also have to realise that the purpose of running mate is not to 'fill space' but to step-in in case of any eventuality of the main candidate. This is why the VP assumes the role of President in event of death, and not the runner-up in the Presidential election. It is also the reason the VP-elect assume the position of President-elect in event of death of the President-elect and not the runner-up of the election. This is same reason the APC Deputy Governorship-candidate of Kogi state (James Faleke) will/should assume the position of Governorship-candidate and not the runner-up in the APC Primary election. Hence, the APC should 'do the needful and nominate a new Deputy-Gov candidate.

A Fresh Primary Is Illegal and Unconstitutional
However, should APC elect for a fresh primary, then that will amount to illegality as no section of the Electoral Act and the Constitution give room for primary when election is ongoing. I believe that the court will nullify it. It is my belief that the only legitimate thing is for Faleke to be made the candidate.

Why I'm Behind Hon James Faleke's Ascension:
My position on this subject is precipitated on the need for being on the side of justice irrespective of who the beneficiary may be. Justice is justice, there is no basis for opposing justice because it doesn't favor our ethnic or political scheme. For those against Faleke on basis of his non-Igala heritage, I urge you to accept the new development for in the interest of the state.

May God Bless Us All and Bless Kogi state.
For the first time, i see things same way as you.

Am fully for Folake.

I wonder how APC has found the legitimacy to embark on a fresh primary like the declared.

It will be morally wrong for a winner in the new primaries to claim the 250+k votes of APC without ever working for it. Only Folake can claim it.

If APC does otherwise, i encourage him to head to court and the victory will be delivered to him on a platter of gold.

Just one quick question Mr. Adanny... do you use your modified sine wave inverter for your laptop and flat screen TV also?... these are expensive devices, i don't want to risk damage on them.
Yes, i do.

My 32" LED tv + Dstv + home theatre are almost always powered on except when sleeping.

Others are standing fan, laptop, phone chargers, 8 18w economy bulbs, 3 ceiling fans and a blender all when required. I usually turn off most lights especially the 2 outside when power fails. My kids bedroom is lighted and the standing fan in my room is powered all night.

@ op, I beg to disagree because the part of the constitution you quoted clearly state that before the commencement of the election but in kogi state's case

1. There is a legally conducted election

2. Even the dead candidate voted and his vote was counted

3. More than 90% of the election is conducted already

4. And don't forget the candidate and his deputy contested on a joint ticket and thank God the other partner on the ticket ( faleke) is alive and well

5. The votes were voted and recorded for the party and not in the candidate's name.

6. The election to be conducted is just a supplementary election which can never void the main election.

7. election been inconclusive is not same as been invalid.

cc: adaweezy , tonyebarcanista , gbawe , Ngeneukwenu .
The Audu's Deputy governorship candidate is just the substantive governor awaiting his confirmation by INEC. There is no way INEC can stop the process since the electoral law mentioned the period after nomination and before election.

The only way to stop his declaration is if Wada wins the remaining units which elections is planned to hold. There is no way Wada can win all the votes and have a simple majority over APC with the remaining wards. APC wont let it happen.

The funniest thing was i never wanted neither Audu nor Wada as Kogi governor but fate made it so.

i am asking because i just need an affordable modified sine wave inverter to power 3 standing fans so that everybody in my house can sleep soundly at night and i heard fans on modified sine wave inverters make too much noise.
For my standing fan, the noise difference is not significant as i can barely hear it when its on inverter but the ceiling fans is more significant. It wont stop most people from sleeping soundly though.
NYSC › Re: Steer Clear Of Relationship(s) In NYSC Camp And During Service Year by adanny01(m): 9:58am On Nov 19, 2015
ogaprime:
In My Own Opinion Steer Clear Of Relationship(s) In Camp And During Service Year

I served my fatherland from 2104-2015, so I have little or no experience about service year, so this goes out to those yet to serve.
I had in mind to write on this topic before batch B 2015 prospective corp members were called for service year but something happened of recent that “jingered” me to put up this write up. Relationship here I mean, a love relationship between a male and a female and as small as relationship is, it cannot be removed from service year.

In my own opinion, I think all prospective corp members should steer clear off relationship because from what I gathered, most of such relationships end on the day of Passing Out Parade (POP). Why is this so? its because NYSC is the gathering of people from different parts of the country. Majority go back to their “before NYSC” base thereby putting an end to such relationships. I am for friendship and not for relationship.

In my own opinion, if you are in a very serious relationship before going to camp or for service year, I will advise you to stay glue to your relationship, no cheating, no hanky panky. tests of every kind will hit your relationship and it will be for your own good if you constantly assure your partner with a clean and open hands and with unchanging behaviors and attitudes that you are still in a relationship with your partner.

In my own opinion, if you are single before going to camp or for service year, I will advise you to remain single throughout service year but be on the look out for responsible, matured, future focused individuals or person who you think can be a good life partner. If you are unable to see these kind of persons, its of advantage that you will still remain “clean” as possible for your future partner.

These are the following reasons why you should stick to your partner at home or remain single:

++ different backgrounds: prospective corp members come from different backgrounds, religions, tribes ,cultures etc. starting a relationship during service year might lead to nowhere due to difference in backgrounds.

++ different place of primary assignment: this is for those thinking of coming to camp to hook up with new babes or guys. “what camp has joined together, let PPA put asunder ”

++ different pre-nysc location: people come from different parts of Nigeria for service year. I know of some that met during service year and it was “we love each other so much”. Few weeks after POP, “we love each other so much” turned to “to your tent O Israel”

++ no heart breaks or emotional trauma: some people don’t know how to play football but they had the mind set to be like C.Rolando and Ronaldinho during service year breaking hearts, twisting hearts, deceiving hearts. Steer clear and you won’t experience this.

++ savings: using my personal experience, I was( and still is) in a relationship before my service year and I stayed true throughout my service year. If I had gotten into “service year” relationship, I wouldn’t have saved some reasonable amount out of my allawee.

++ respect for being self disciplined: most “service year” couples make use of each other to the core. This is for the ladies because most of them do give out their time, money, energy and body to the “service year” relationship thinking it will lead to the altar. if you discipline and control your self during service year (i.e. no sexual activities), your current or future partner will respect you for being truthful and trustworthy even without much surveillance. Even you yourself will respect and place more value on yourself.

++ lose lose situation: you are in a serious relationship before service year but you decided to get involved in a “service year” relationship. Later on you changed towards your "home based" partner because of your service year partner so as just to “eat your cake and still have it”. After POP, your service year partner goes back to his/her base forgetting about you. Its at that point you remember you have an home based partner. I am sure the home based partner won't continue the relationship with you again. At the end, it’s a lose lose situation.

I hope my 2kobo can make you buy time to think very well on having relationship or not during service year. At least, in my own opinion, steering clear of relationship during service is for your own good.

++in your own opinion, feel free to add yours...
See this guy o! When NYSC is trying to reward such relationships that end in marriage you want discourage it.

Unity is enhanced in these relationships, stop the segregation tactics.

You think the ppl involved are not aware of their situations.

I doubt your batteries were fully charged.

You said it charged for 7hrs.

Your inverter battery charger will not have more than a 10a charger at best (this is an estimation), it might be even 5A.

So...charged it for 7hrs x 10a = 70Ah, this is not a full charge if the batteries were dead or near dead
I have a mercury 1.2kva inverter that is rated 20a. It charges my 200ah battery in about 8hrs.
