Car Talk / Re: How Reliable Is Kia? by adechuks(m): 4:32pm On Oct 25, 2007
Frankies:

I think I prefer a good fairly used toyota product for instance camry 99 or 2000 to new kia rio despite the fact they are of the same price.

Toyota is much more fuel conservative than kia. Still heavier than Kia product which is always too light and cannot withstand heavy impact on the body.

Kia does not have second hand value and cannot be reasonable after two years of usage.

I can cont to give more reasons but I rest my case here.

I agree with you. in some of your points. The second-hand valu after 2 years is highly debatable since kia has a 3yr/90,000km warranty.
I drive a Toyota Camry myself. i love to travel a lot, and i drive most times. Did a PH/Lagos road trip this last weekend.
and a Toyota is much better than a Rio for such gruesome tasks. but the young lady needs to get to work, in lagos, and go to church.
and get to her friend's wedding without having to wait for Dayo or the office people etc.

The 2007 Kia is a great improvement on the previous releases.
If she can afford the financing for the yaris, it s a better option.

@ viperman
why do you say that?

@adechuks
thanks a lot! you are right im not a car freak i just need to move around (without having to visit the mechanic!)Ideally i would love to get a 1.8 Toyota Corolla but its going for 3.2mill for the automatic, far out of my reach. I believe the Rio will be going for far less. Anybody know how much the Rio /Yaris 1.6 automatic costs?

Well, first of all, my friend Viperman sells cars (tokunbos mostly). That may not be his reason for the post though. but you can forgive his bias.
The Yaris is also a great product and it goes for about 2.3m.
Rio is between 1.2-1.4m . Not sure exactly how much.

or did tampico sneak a trip to the penthouse(with makin) he has been MIA too o!, ( sebi lawyerchap promised only tampico the money, why is he(makin) absent as well) lol, killing two birds with one stone i guess, collecting 100,000 (in whatever currency) and jollofing in the pent house grin

I just like the sound of that. 100,000 (in whatever currency). Come to think of it; 100,000 kobo is actually 1,000 naira. Good thinking, Kai, good thinking. I know only a lawyer could have come up with that kind of offer.
LC my guy, I'm still on your side though.

Ndi:

On that day, are we all going to be carrying Placards with our username(s) boldly written on it so as to identify ourselves?. I think Seun should be notified about this arrangement (He has to come all the way fro Abeokuta!!!) and probably make him our host. grin

My suggestions to the above questions would be;

Venue: I can't really tell if majority of us stay on the Island/Mainland (Lagos or other States/Country)
Time: 2pm Prompt.
Date: 17th or 18th November 2007
Day: Saturday or Sunday.

Your Suggestions please while we still focus on the topic of discussion.

@Ndichap,
Well, as per identification, Nairaland T shirts can start showing up all over lagos with our names at the back wink Seun will not like that. Copyright infringement and all that grammar
Venue, you can be sure majority DO NOT stay on the island. I live in Port Harcourt. where we just got a new governor today
Time: 2pm is Ok but spora may not like that. better to be a night vigil. his type
date: 17/18 perfect, and i think that will be after the end of BBA2.
days: sat / sunday perfect too.

BUT, experience has shown that people are better thought of when you do not meet them. It would be disastrous for some to discover that Tampico is a 54yr old House of Rep member after all. And she has actually been impeached from nairaland. GOD forbid
Or discover that Lawyerchap is a retired school principal from Okokomaiko, presently doing law evening classes in LASU.

Anyway, I have voted Maureen. And Maureen. And blah blah blah, carrying hot water bottle all over the place.
I know she'll go straight to a shrink on Monday.

Have a good evening y'all.
Car Talk / Re: How Reliable Is Kia? by adechuks(m): 3:33pm On Oct 25, 2007
@need2know,
I beg to differ from viperman in this instance.
From your question, I see you are a young lady that wants to get around, and u're not necessarily a car freak.
In that case, a brand new Kia Rio (which will be the same price as a great Toyota) is a good option for you for the following reasons,
1. They are not too big. In other words, some of them are what you ladies call 'cute'. The Kia Rio (hatch back/not the sedan) is a case in point
2. Being brand new, you will not worry about mechanics for a very long time. At least 2 years.
3. Financing options are readily available for brand new cars at a cost that will not kill you.

My candid opinion.
All the best though.

Modups!:

tampico has taken lawyerchap's challenge and has decided not to post here for 48 hours
she has 24 hours to go then we can have her back
i.e. if seun has not banned for life for abandoning us here grin
so adechuks take lacasera instead
Thank you jare, my sister.

But i have warned her that lawyerchap did not state currency o, so it may not be worth the 48 hours after all.

Did you say salsera or lacasera wink wink grin

I'm betting that if you can stay away from this thread for the next 48 hours i will give you a hundred thousand in cash at our Thread Reunion. There. I have said it in public, so it is binding.

@LC,
Call to Prayer GSM Network indeed ! You're good at what you do, really.

@Tampics,
Hmmm, what can i say. I see that you're itching, your fingers poised and ready to blast away on this thread, but the 100,000 offer is just too much to ignore. Then the next thing you think is "Oh, let me show them i can fashy the 100k" when all the while, what you wanted is to say something
I totally agree with LC about the loving you part. We truly do, and can not change our minds now!

@All,
I need to get back to my presentation in the office which starts in 40minutes. My colleagues think i'm busy preparing for it. let me go and prove them right.

Career / Re: Varying Salaries In Different Fields by adechuks(m): 6:57pm On Oct 23, 2007
Opiro2000:

I'm good with these answers. Like adechucks says, if we look at industries, they differ. But does anyone have an idea of entry level pay range for Human Resource professionals?
I also have someone going into a medium sized one-man business as Personal /Confidential Secretary(2 years experience) and she is being offered N35k. Is that good enough?

I think an entry-level person should imagine what the CV will look like in about 5 years, and use that to judge what to take and what to reject.
Apart from that, the person's basic expenses should be covered. e.g If your cousin thinks the 35k does not pay her transport fares through the month, then it does make too much sense to take the pay.
If you think you'll be stuck (not be able to job-hunt) while taking the 35k, it's also not a good thing.
There is no perfect answer for the 35k lady. She has to determine the benefits vs the demerits of the whole show.
Meanwhile, if it offers you an opportunity to meet people and expand your network profitably, then you can overlook the pay and network with bigboys in government and business.
My wife once earned 30k in an oil servicing firm that regularly sent staff abroad for trainings (and eventually got her an american visa for a training, though she resigned not long after and did not go on the training)
So, plenty gist but each person should be long-sighted, and be close-sighted in such decisions.
chikena.

Femtex:

How many years of experience does your cousin have as a process engr?
Thank you o. That matters a great deal.

Consulting on what??

By The way, did you say Customer service is 25K to 40 K per annum or per month

While not confirming the figures, when people in Naija say "Consulting", they mean KPMG, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Accenture etc
the first thing i did when i saw your question was to check your location

25k-40k meant per month.

@topic,
salaries are industry-varied and not tied to job functions.

DJNiyi:

Mortgage financing in Nigeria is still very new, which explains the paucity of information on the topic.

We, at Geeplaces, have taken the pains to compile some information together. It is a work in progress and we'll be updating it from time to time, as we get authorisation from the banks to do so.

Here is the link - http://www.geeplaces.com/geehomes/mxml/lenders.html.

I hope it helps.

God bless you DJNiyi.

The guy is always so confused.

The Big 5 should start making plans to brand their own T-shirt because that is the one I would like to place order for.

The Untouchables is a better sell than Big 5. At least in name, and cohesion.

@topic,
Nigeria is still in the planning stage.
Some companies have done comprehensive mapping of the major cities in Nigeria.
so the full answer is, GPS does not work in Naija yet. You will need a human GPS to assist you (and go with you) from point A to B, or help along the road (somewhere in point C).

Big brother (read SEUN),
I would like to nominate MZANSI-GAL for possible eviction,
, because she does not do anything in the house other than just start quarrels, even though she joined the house today.
Also, she tends to bring out the worst in otherwise well-mannered nairalanders.
Even the head of house (lawyerchap) warned her severally about her self-destructive behaviour but it seems she is intent on making more trouble.

Yes, she is also my second nomination.
For the same reason.

Yes, That will be all, Biggy.

Yes. No problem.
