A rocket used by land forces to power RPG's or unguided rockets fired from helicopters is different to the propulsion methods used in SAM's. Every useless rebel group buys such weapons, meaning the technology to produce them is fairly common. Even Syrian rebels make their own rockets and mortars. The technology needed to produce SAMs is steps up. Reliable burning motors with powerful thrust profiles are hard to produce. Add to that the increased complexity in aerodynamics, gyros, servos etc etc.

however, Type 90 is not field artillery, it is air defence artillery built do shoot down guided bombs, fast flying jet fighter aircraft, and fast flying cruise missiles. thus air defence artillery needs split second timing and accuracy to hit its fast targets and only a computer can achieve that result. also, air defence artillery does not use land azimuth targeting.

About the balloons. Your Nigerian general was either drunk, lying, had no clue what he was talking about or was misquoted. Look at it this way.

- In 1972 the U.S launches the Winzen unmanned balloon to an altidude of 51.8km. This stays as the world record for 30 years..

- In 2002 the BU60-1 unmanned balloon reaches an altitude of 53km. It took 30 years to increase height by 1.2km.

- 2013 a Nigerian general claims to have a spy balloon at 84km . Institutions such as NASA keep quiet about it? Do you honestly believe that? You're smart enough not to i hope. Only balloons you have were purchased (or were going to be purchased) from Israel. And those are nowhere near 84km altitude.

The tpye 90 is a GDF clone. You should know that.

F-7 jet too is a Mig-21 clone with different and better computers/avionics/electronics/radars.

for Type 90 and GDF-002, post full technical details of the two AAA guns computers and guidance systems side by side to try prove your claim.

the best naval dockyard in africa is in lagos nigeria, our navy repairs any size of ship, and we are building 70% of the first guided missile stealth warship in the whole of africa with full technology transfer to nigeria for ever, south africa has not achieved that. go sit down. every country has its own area of strength and focus/specialization according to urgent needs

When SA engineers wanted to upgrade these systems they found they were too obsulete, wouldn't be financially worth it.
Would be cheaper to design a new system, and the Umkhonto programme was born.
