Augustus, I posted this story on this forum 3 days ago - it seems the last horse has finally crossed the line grin grin

1. The story has been denied by the SANDF and UN

UN spokesman Farhan Haq said in a statement, "South Africa currently has 802 members of an infantry battalion deployed in Kutum, Malha and Mellit team sites in North Darfur. We can confirm that the mission's South African troops were not held hostage or under any threat as reported in the media."

http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Not-true-that-SA-soldiers-were-held-hostage-in-Sudan-SANDF-20150616

http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=39525:un-sandf-deny-south-african-troops-held-hostage-as-sudans-bashir-left-south-africa&catid=111:sa-defence&Itemid=242

2. According to allegations: 800 men spread over 3 bases - one base was surrounded by 500 men. So 266 were surrounded by 500
http://ewn.co.za/2015/06/16/Sandf-troops-were-held-hostage-in-Sudan-Reports

3. SANDF units in Sudan are lightly armed with only personal weapons

4. Yes, 800 men in a foreign country, with no support or re-enforcement will be over-run.

5. Yes, soldiers are happy that they did not have to fight in a battle they would lose

6. Regardless of the fact that defeat was inevitable - they still prepared to fight:

South Africa had reportedly distributed extra ammunition to its soldiers, who were said to have been placed on high alert in full combat gear
http://www.rdm.co.za/politics/2015/06/17/row-grows-over-claim-sa-troops-were-held-hostage-in-sudan

So congradulations on posting a story that is a non-entity!! UN confirms it did not happen!! And the allegations themselves are not in any way damning to the SANDF!

Excuses ! Excuses !

Sudanese army confirms story :

"The army said the "increased military traffic" in Darfur was part of the Sudanese government's preparations for the Ramadan religious celebrations.

Head of joint operations, Lieutenant General Derrick Mgwebi, said the situation had "normalised" and the mobilisation of Sudanese soldiers near the South African base in Khartoum was not aimed at the base."

http://m.news24.com/news24/SouthAfrica/News/SA-troops-in-Sudan-feared-the-worst-20150617

The army of Sudan said they were doing maneuver not aimed at attacking the South African army, but the SANDF troops were already afraid of men in Toyoto Hilux and the 800 SANDF troops were ready to surrender without a fight tongue shocked grin cheesy

Nobody on Nairaland says SANDF men were held hostage or surrounded, but the 500 Sudanese troops drove Toyota near the base in a mission for Ramadan ops, then the cowards of South Africa decided to tremble, quake, shake, share ammunition, and surrender without a fight !

SANDF peacekeepers have standard issues: R4 rifles, heavy machine guns, MRAPS, and likely AGL, MGL, mortars, these are basic infantry weapons of SANDF standard orbat.

Chicken Republic Of South Africa !

SANDF always ready to hide or surrender in trouble

This is the worst stupidd post Nairaland ever had in its history. A peace keeper is not a combat soldier.

As a peace keeper you will always have to be restricted to a limited firepower. With a limited firepower, not even Rambo or Bruce Lee can come out alive. A local government sponsored troops in thousands would have defeated the world Superpower, the US to the level of giving in.

Well with Seleka, we couldn't throw in the towel because rebels do not have mercy. We have seen it with Nigerian troops at home where BH could not offer them any mercy and instead what was left was to take to their heels to another country. Troops which today have been sacked because of their cowardice.
UN mandate in Sudan allows peace enforcement, and UN peace-keeping law allows self-defense by UN peace keepers if attacked.

SANDF is allowed to fight combat in Sudan by United Nations enforcement and self-defence regulations.

That is why the report says the South African troops immediately distributed ammunition for all soldiers in case they need to fight, but they preferred a surrender actually.

Nigerian army fought in Sudan when attacked, we died and bled, we did NOT surrender !

Nigerian army was out-numbered in a surprise night attack, but we used platoon size of soldiers to gallantly fight in self defense and won the battle with only rifles and MG against Sudanese anti-aircraft guns and battalion size fighters.

South African army decided to surrender without firing one shot tongue grin cheesy shocked

Most Cowardly Army In Africa = SANDF .

We are cowards ! South African army confesses :

• We 800 SANDF troops where so much afraid of 500 Sudanese troops

• We SANDF have MRAPS, but we trembled before Sudanese in Hilux Toyotas

• We SANDF have DENEL made weapons but we will surrender to Sudanese men with AK-47

• We SANDF are always ready to surrender, we did same to Seleka in C.A.R, we see enemy, we surrender !

• Imagine it was Boko Haram, we will surrender in 5 minutes, that's even worse than Seleka terror

• We SANDF are now happy that we do not have to fight, we came here for the UN monthly salary

• We SANDF fear death more than a chicken fears cooking pot

• We SANDF are born cowards, it's in our blood, no matter the training and equipment !

SA troops in Sudan feared the worst

Pretoria - More than 800 terrified South African soldiers in Sudan feared the worst when their camp was surrounded by Sudanese troops.

"In order to save lives, we would have to have surrendered if they stormed us." a South African soldier told Netwerk24.

It is believed that Al-Bashir was possibly allowed to leave South Africa amid fears of violence against the South African peacekeepers.

But a soldier said: "We were so scared - we were surrounded by soldiers. "

A friend of a soldier at the base said that they were surrounded by about 500 heavily-armed Sudanese soldiers in Hilux bakkies at about 10:00 on Monday. Al-Bashir's jet took off from Waterkloof air force base at about midday on Monday.

While the court bid to have him arrested continued in Pretoria, the South African soldiers were surrounded. They were placed at Level 2 readiness, which means they had to be battle ready and fully armed.

If it is a problem in your airforce

Then it will affect everything

The fact that your F-7's crash suggests it to be true

Now, prove you have more than 3 pilots
No single citation in your claims....sign of defeat...

ORLY?

"The NAF has limited combat experience, its only engagements being against poorly armed rebels"

In reality, the SAAF has engaged enemy fighter jets and advanced enemy SAM systems - and you have not.
SAAF got defeated in it's air war experience, and your pilots stopped flying against Cuban MiG-23, SAAF has an experience of total defeat cheesy

Old glory = Expired glory .... those old SAAF white men pilots have retired or no longer fly combat. Today, you have rookies who have NEVER used Gripen and Hawk jets to kill a single cockroach cheesy

There are mud plains in northern Nigeria and southern Chad. Paper maps are deceptive for vegetation analysis.

Your army will get stuck unless you do assault course terrain analysis for your AOR by scout/recce before you launch out for ops in real war.

Poor maintenance is a theme in the Nigerian airforce

If it affects the rest of your fleet, it will be affecting the F-7's
Post citation to prove it affects F-7 jet, direct and specific citation.

F-7 jet maintenance technology has been transferred to NAF by PAF and we train together for air to air combat drills.

NAF F-7 jet arrived a year after your source, so show us source to prove that your old story also extends to new aircraft that was not in service at the time of writing the report, show us proof, your personal opinion is useless on nairaland, I cannot quote your bedroom ideas in a project or academic thesis.

Tracked vehicles lack mobility.

They are heavily armoured.

Have you read about the "relentless pursuit tactic" which the mercinaries/PMCs used in Nigeria with their trained strike force?
Please don't mess up this thread with stories you cannot prove, there were no mercenaries in Nigeria, but PMC, yes, PMC for training.

Mercenaries are fighters, no South African mercenary fought in Nigeria as confirmed by Col. Eben Barlow. Don't mess up this thread with lies.

The PMC trained 120 men of 72 strike was was just an extra mobile infantry inside MRAP that can be wiped out by Boko Haram 14.5 mm and 23 mm gun Toyotas from 3 km away, the real defeat of Boko Haram is credited to Nigerian T-72 tanks with ERA armour, no weapon in Boko Haram arsenal was able to penetrate NA T-72 tanks

This is more like it.

I don't why African armies still buy tracked armoured vehicles.
Only tracks can go through certain types of thick wet mud and loose dry sand terrain. Experienced armies that fight outside dry land know that.

Evidence have been provided countless times regarding this matter, you simply choose to disregard these facts because it doesnt suit your totally misguided and imaginative view of what you think....sorry!!...hope SAAF looks like, for the simple fact that you can remotely compare SAAF and NAF.

But unfortunately for you, SAAF is light years head of anything NAF has or will ever have in the future, If you really want to compare SAAF to other nations, compare it to the likes of the AAF or EAF as these are the only 2 air forces in Africa that can be compared to SAAF,and even these 2 air forces are totally outclassed when one compares technological advancement.
NAF has it's edge over Algerian and Egyptian air forces. SAAF is no comparison.

Algerian air force has far far far far less combat experience compared to Nigeria.

Egyptian air force last fought a war over 40 years ago. Current pilots have ZERO experience.

Nigerian air force has flown 6,000 combat sorties in 6 months and fought wars overseas and at home consistently for the past 25 years.

NAF ISTAR beats everybody in Africa by far.

An air force is more than just having more or better jet fighters, there are different kinds of combat air forces are required to be capable of fighting, and constant experience of war is an edge.

NAF is desired by Egypt, they did not even act as if SAAF exists, the Egyptians don't want to be associated with a ZERO tested air force, SAAF

No evidence. You have 26 Gripens, 18 Gripen air crew, this turns out as 9 Pilots and 9 Navigators.

You South-Africans are dullards. Why buy a plane on loan, when you know you can't fly them?
I think the SAAF Gripen pilot shortage has to do with lack of capable brains to train, and learn how to fly a 4th generation jet, the white officers have left SANDF and the air force is worst hit by the exit of white SAAF men, the Zulus are born to throw spears around, their brains CANNOT pass a Gripen pilot qualifying exam.

Same kind of problem the Saudis have with Eurfighter Typhoons and they want a less complex jet that their oil filled lazy brains can fly.

The South Africans are even worse, they cannot fly a light jet like the Gripen, Zulu/Xhosa brain is duller than Arab brains, Zulu/Bantu brains are 2nd bottom of the world intelligence ladder, it cannot understand how to fly a 4th generation jet fighter.

They should have bought MiG-21 upgrades from Eastern Europe and upgrade them with Israeli help, Zulu pilots can fly those types easily

As of 2009, most of its fleets were grounded and its training institutions were constrained with shortages of technical skills such as instructors and institutional facilities. Aircraft become due for Periodic Depot Maintenance (PDM) with time, and not by hours flown, because they are most of the time grounded for unserviceability. The reasons for unserviceability are usually traceable to lack of spares occasioned by insufficient funding.

As of 2009, most of its fleets were grounded and its training institutions were constrained with shortages of technical skills such as instructors and institutional facilities.

Evidently, the current budgetary allocations to the NAF cannot sustain effective and efficient aircraft maintenance activities. This is due to the constraints in spares acquisition. Lack of funding has been responsible for an inability to preserve aircraft regularly… Aircraft become due for Periodic Depot Maintenance (PDM) with time, and not by hours flown, because they are most of the time grounded for unserviceability.
