AkaraAndBread: Una sabi abuse unasef for this forum sha... But I no come here come fight.
According to the law (the NYSC Act of 1993, section 12, sub-section 1a), an NYSC discharge certificate is still a requirement for seeking employment in any organization (public or private).
Kemi Adeosun's case bordered on certificate forgery. However, Justice Taiwo of the Federal High Court (who presided over her case) in his judgement stated that an NYSC discharge certificate is NOT A REQUIREMENT for holding ANY public office in Nigeria.... a political judgement if one was to ask for my opinion.
A discharge certificate (or a certificate of exemption) is still needed to seek employment in Nigeria. Failure to go for service can attract a fine of N2K, a 12 month jail sentence or both.
This is one example of the retrogressive laws in Nigeria that needs to be repealed.
Unfortunately the youth who are the victims of such a law are not inclined to seeing the end to a one year program that sees them being used as cheap labour, while doing little to improve their job prospects and also endangers their lives.
Like I said earlier, the program may have been relevant in the 70s, but it has absolutely no place in the scheme of things in 2021 and beyond.
If Nigerians fail to see that, then I stand by my words that Nigeria cannot get better.
There is no basis for civil conscription in our society anymore. If anyone would like to see what the rest of Nigeria looks like he/she should do it at his/her own time and on his/her own dime.
Nobody should be compelled in any way to do civil conscription anymore especially when the risks far outweigh the benefits. Barely 24 hours after arguing till eternity on this thread whether NYSC is still relevant today, Governor Fayemi offers his own opinion on how much a corper is worth in his own mind ( please note the part where he says that those not willing to serve in the military should not be paid) https://www.nyscbroadcast.com/2021/10/recruit-youth-corpers-into-millitary-to.html?m=1 |

Trojan8: My only annoyance is that, it's only those that are done with service that keeps crying for it to be scrapped.
You went for service, allow others. It's not like they are complaining to you or There's a saying.; " Learn from the older peer group in order not to repeat their mistakes" I served in 2005. In hindsight, my humble opinion is that the program had very little benefits back then and even less so today. The reality is that Corp members provide cheap labour that is readily available and the program itself does little to enhance corp members' career prospects. If you add the current insecurity issues nationwide it makes it even less desirable to subject a young graduate - who should be more concerned with thoughts of how to establish a foothold in an ever dwindling labour market - through the whole ordeal. |

The Nigerian Army is not part of the charade and fake news, they ordinarily don't feature in missions like this but for the way you guys have been killing uniformed personnel, especially personnel of Igbo extraction you terrorists call saboteurs.
I am sure the army can't wait to finish their operations and get back to their barracks. How soon that will be, depends on the IPOB terrorists, not the innocent patriotic Nigerians of Igbo extraction.

We have a problem with interpreting the law in this country... I guess that is why we are a lawless country. I am aware of the court verdict in Kemi Adeosun's case. Trojan8: You can't for others though. They are actually people that see it as an achievement because you don't does not make you any better. I never said I was better. But if the majority can call a spade a spade then Nigeria would be a better place. I did my youth service over 15 years ago. In hindsight it offered little to me... just a waste of my time. Now, even going for youth service is even DANGEROUS! Yet people don't see anything wrong in it. Some pertinent facts to note; 1. It adds little - if anything at all - to your work experience (you will be working in whatever shit hole you find yourself in for barely a year). A prospective applicant who worked in an establishment for a year shouldn't be fronting that fact at the top of his resume. 2. Although it is mandatory the one year does not invalidate your degree3. The corper is usually cheated in terms of wages and other entitlements (*** read that as "the corper is usually used like a rag with little reward) 4. Of what use are the physical drills that corpers are subjected to (while in camp) beneficial to them in the labour market?? Remember the female corper who was bathed in muddy water by a female military personnel? 5. Most times after the service year, most corpers are left unemployed. This is not 1973. Times have changed, but people have refused to change with the times. How many of our leaders went for service?? . Yet they subject you through the ordeal. Our youths are not soldiers or paramilitary personnel that you will be maltreating and issuing blanket orders to. MAKE NYSC OPTIONAL AND SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL WILLINGLY GO AND WASTE ONE YEAR OF THEIR LIFE FOR SUCH RUBBISH. I weep when I see graduates being humiliated by people with only first school leaving certificate (highest ordinary WAEC) all in the name of NYSC. Nigeria will never get better. That is how we lose great minds because of retrogressive policies from 40 years ago.

akanke79: My story goes thus.My relative with a history of multiple preterm births employed the service of a gynaecologist (Lecturer) to perform a preventative cerclage at 14 weeks of pregnancy.
The lady lost her mucus plug three weeks after the procedure and the Doctor gave her the all clear only to loose her water a week later. The doctor discharged her while having contractions and precribed antibiotics for her.
She sought a second option from another doctor who tried to salvage the situtation by doing another emergency cerclage only to find out the previous cerclage was badly done.( loose to one knot and lost its elasticity). This means the previous doctor used an inferior material for the procedure.
After the second doctor’s emergency cerclage ,he conducted some Blood tests and found out there is an infection in the body. The only option was to terminate the pregnancy. She had no option but to terminate the pregnancy but to her horror the doctor delivered the baby at 19 weeks with a severed head.
The lady is in trauma whenever she remembers the horror she and her baby had to go through. Share your bad experiences and how did you remedy the situation? A tragic story indeed. I am really sorry for her loss. Why the Nigerian healthcare system is like this is because rarely do you have cases of litigation when these type of things come up. A multi-million naira law suit that will drain that doctor's bank account, give him countless sleepless nights as well as result in the loss of his practicing license would make our dear consultant obs/gyn sit up next time - if there is going to be a next time - and do a better patient follow up on subsequent occasions... as well as prevent it from happening to someone else. But for some strange reason, most Nigerians will just accept their loss in good faith. |

Its waste of time and money. People should just raise there kids better and travel and experience Nigeria on your own dime. Thank you o jare. That excuse of NYSC being a means of integrating Nigerians is bollocks! I wonder if Nigerians are naturally daft. If anyone wants to discover Nigeria, let it be on his/her own terms ( travel and experience Nigeria on your own dime) Gowon introduced the NYSC scheme in the 70s - after the Civil war- as a means of fostering unity. The threats to Nigeria's unity in 1973 are not the same threats to our unity in 2021. So after 40 years the govt still believes that the challenges to Nigeria's unity are still the same as they were in the 70s ***smh*** Forcing young men/women to travel and live in places they may not like, paying them a PITTANCE as a wage, exposing them to security threats as well as using them as ad hoc staff is something I just can't comprehend. It is so retrogressive to me. The choice to go for NYSC should be optional. Making it mandatory is unconstitutional (because it negates your rights to freedom of movement/association . You are forcing people to do what they would not have done if given a choice.) Gone are the military days when you could " force/coerce" people. And with the current security challenges, the need for the scheme is called into question. Whatever thread that exists and still unites us is not the result of the benefits of NYSC.Nonsense govt that is just interested in subjecting youths to danger and hardship ***spits***

On Monday I gave my wife Christmas shopping money to get foodstuffs, hers and children clothing including our house help.
Yesterday my wife went shopping, she bought clothes for herself, our children and nothing for the house help. She claimed that the girl doesn’t need any clothes for Christmas as long we feed and send her to school, the rest is her parents' duties. The girl in question is my wife's relative from the same village. This girl is so nice to our children, she is like a second mother to them despite her being just 15, I have never had any problem with her.
I was mad at her that I told her, if she cannot treat another woman's child well then she doesn’t deserve to be a mother, yes I did said some harsh words to her because of anger. She accused me of sleeping with the little girl which I told her she is mad and she couldn’t stop crying the whole night. This morning she didn’t make my breakfast and refused greeting me back.
Please house let me know if I overreacted Send her (your wife and not the house help) packing. |

wisemum: I am bringing this topic here to see if I can get any good advise from youths of the same generation.
My son returned from schooling abroad two years ago and after completing his NYSC, has been trying to get a job. None has been forthcoming but he tries to keep occupied, trying his hands on different projects. He still lives at home but says that once he is financially stable, he will get his own apartment and move out.
He is generally a calm, law abiding , likeable gentleman until when he recently started bringing home this girl who dresses like a prostitute and who I discovered stays overnight in his room with him. His dad and I have fought him over this subject to no avail. I confronted the girl to tell her I do not feel comfortable with her sleeping overnight in my house especially since I do not know her family and will be held responsible if anything happens to her. She apologized to me and promised not to come to sleep over again. However, I noticed that after that, he started sneaking her in at late hours of the night when he thinks we have gone to bed, sometimes when it is past midnight. He hasn't introduced the girl to us as anything to him even though I have asked him several times what his intentions with this girl is but he will just say she is a friend that makes him happy- that's all.
He told his uncle that he likes the girl. I don't even know what else to do. I have tried talking to him, reasoning with him, but it all falls on his deaf ears. I do not like this girl at all. She comes across to me as a street girl- even though she is generally polite when she meets me at home anytime she comes during the day. I investigated and found out her work place is not far from our house. What I do not like about her is that she dresses, exposing delicate parts of her body and is a chain smoker.
Furthermore, to me, a girl who sleeps out in a mans' parent house, continually disregarding how his parents feel about it, cannot be good news. Once, I caught her almost naked in the night walking along the corridor leading to my sons room. She ran inside his room when she saw me. I was so embarrassed and wondered what if my husband had been the one who ran into her? What kind of thing is this? Only her pant on, breasts bare. It was the following day I traced her to her work place and gently but sharply and firmly told her I do not permit her to sleep over in my house again. His dad also spoke with him. I also spoke to him. Everything has been to no avail.
He still sneaks her in. Or did she jazz him?, Please advise me. Thanks. Hahahaha ... No be jazz matter, Madam. If your son is a graduate and is old enough to work yet he still brings a woman into his parents' house to spend the night then I believe it is not the woman that you should be talking to. In fact, that "boy" that you call your son has been fed with a silver spoon for too long. That's why he has the guts to be sleeping with a woman under his parents' roof. Leave the poor lady alone. No be she cause am. Na opportunity wey she see. In fact, if there is anyone that should be reprimanded then it should be you and your husband because your son lacks respect and discipline. He still wants to eat his cake and have it. Even after his parents have expressed their displeasure with his sh!t, the " boy" has still chosen to stay and continue F!CKING the girl under his parents' roof. No right thinking man will do that. If he is old enough to f!ck anyone he likes then he should be old enough to rent his own place (no matter how small) in order to do as he likes...... but what am I saying sef. Why should he even THINK ABOUT renting his own place when he knows " Mummy and Daddy" can always do that for him. But they wouldn't, would they? They "enjoy" his company. You and your hubby still want A FULL GROWN MAN around the house... a full grown man that you will dictate your rules and regulations to.
Face the disrespect that your son is giving you and your husband quietly and don't bring your matter here. That "boy" seems to be a spoilt "child". Even before I got married, DEM NO BORN ME WELL TO CARRY WOMAN INTO MY PAPA HOUSE TO SLEEP WITH AM. Sorry if my tone sounds a bit harsh. I have a relative who complained the same thing about her "son" ... (as if the MEN in question are teenagers). Stuff like that just pisses me off.

Unruly7: How you portray the girl evil without saying anything bad about your son lol
If the girl is a chain smoker it means your son is a chronic smoker
If the girl is a prostitute it means your son is one
If the girl is not responsible for sleeping in a man house, your son is irresponsible for sneaking in a girl in his father's house VERY DISRESPECTFUL
Atleast the girl is working your son isn't working
The problem here is your son maybe you help him get a job and his own apartment
Since he has decided to be useless let him continue
Before you quote me remember The girl won't come to the house if the boy didn't invite her Well said. In every mother's eyes it is the "other person" that is spoiling her child and not vice-versa. Come and collect your award o jare...
