Kobojunkie:

I know what you are trying to argue but it is pointless attempting that. Again, has Lagos ever had high speed rail service before now that charging Naira 500 a ride should be considered a  premium? When Jakande proposed Lagos Rail project back in the 80's, do you think it was to start at $1 a ride?? Ofcourse not. Even the old LSTC rides were not cheap when they first came out. Because these things where new at the time but as time went by, the costs went down as more and more people used them.

If Lagos believes it is too challenged to go for up-dated rail, that is fine. But attacking people for mentioning the obvious, which is that we are building old and not for the new, when, again, cities across the globe are getting rid of their old so they can update to more efficient technologies, makes no sense.

I will remind you again that we have invested about $2 Billion dollars(not naira) at the federal level into obtaining 1970's technology in the year 2011. I am not sure about you but I don't have much confidence in that kind of spending. And I don't have the same confidence in states investing new money into old technology either.

An individual choosing to invest his own money in CAST OFF OYIBO CARS is one thing. But a State investing money that we expect to yield significant returns now and in the far future, in OLD TECHNOLOGY is another thing entirely.

Why not answer his question?. Where do you want Fashola to raise $$billions for purchasing world class trains?. Will you not be the 1st to come here and criticize him if he charges premium for those trains?.

The Charleston County Coroner confirms that a female body discovered Wednesday afternoon on Sullivan's Island is that of missing MUSC resident Olutosin Oyelowo.
Police had reported that Oyelowo, 25, was seen jumping from the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge on Dec. 9. Her wallet and identification were found along the bridge and her car was parked within walking distance.
The coroner was able to positively identify the remains Friday with the help of dental records, said Deputy Coroner Kimberly Rhoton. She died as a result of the fall from the bridge, she said.
Oyelowo's family was informed of the identification, Rhoton said.

Though Charleston police said onlookers identified Oyelowo as the jumper, police could not confirm her identity until a body was recovered.

Users identifying themselves as the young pharmacist's family, asked for prayers on Patch as police, the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies searched the Cooper River for her remains over the last two weeks.

"We continue to covet your prayers and support for the family at this time," the post read on Patch.
The body was found Wednesday afternoon on a Sullivan's island sand bar, roughly six miles by water from the Ravenel Bridge, Rhoton said.

Most of these African countries are better than Nigeria especially their infrastructure so It's very funny when some Nigerians ask arrogantly what their compatriots are doing in smaller african countries.

About  retaliation, the first question is how do you identify a Nigerian in Nigeria?

The Zambian president is just being silly and he should be called out.
Nigerians should play local politics smartly to avoid possible backlash next time.

Better how? Show me any of those countries that has cities like Lagos, abuja or PH?

I don't know about forgiving him but all I'm sure of is that I'll leave him cos any man who does that is definitely a wicked man,btw the lady in the story knew he was a womanizer but still went ahead to marry him, she's partially to be blamed too. There's no excuse for what that man did, even if it wasn't with my besty, why would he want to take another wife without telling me about it? He obviously has no respect for me or the marriage.

Jobs/Vacancies / Expatriates, Some Semi-skilled, Take Over Even Menial Jobs From Nigerians by aloyemeka1: 12:40am On Dec 24, 2011
Expatriates, some semi-skilled, take over even menial jobs from Nigerians

By David Ogah, Dele Fanimo, Wole Shadare, Yetunde Ebosele, Roseline Okere, Adeyemi Adepetun (Lagos) and Florence Lawarence (Abuja)

THEY are ubiquitous. It is hard to miss them. At construction sites, factories, auto sales outlets, oil and gas installations, the aviation sector, telecommunications among others, there are foreigners in the garb of expatriates performing tasks average, semi-skilled Nigerians can handle.

expartriate-pix-1

The unchecked influx of foreigners into the country under the guise of expatriate with skills lacking in Nigeria, has degenerated to the level of abuse, to the extent of aggravating unemployment with its attendant social crisis.

In the midst of staggering statistics from Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which puts unemployment rate at 23.9 per cent, foreign nationals, especially from Asia have continued to invade the country under the guise of being expatriates.

Today, you find clocking clerks, sales executives, site supervisors, foremen, fitters, tillers, welders, cooks, in businesses parading themselves as expatriates.

Indeed, to show that the issue of expatriate quota abuse is of great concern, Labour and Productivity Minister, Chief Emeka Wogu, last year, said that part of the condition for the award of contracts should be the employment of local human resources.

The minister had said: "The era when contractors got their labour force outside of the country is over as government will now ensure that Nigerians are employed in strategic places in companies that are executing contracts worth billions of naira in the country."

Unknown to the minister then, his pronouncement came at an appropriate time to stave off an impending protest by a non-governmental organisation - Shelter Watch Initiative, against some multinational firms known to be violating the expatriate quota law.

But this did not stop the organisation from petitioning President Goodluck Jonathan, urging him to halt the unrestricted influx of foreigners under the guise of being expatriates with its concomitant security implication.

For the avoidance of doubts, the country is not bereft of laws to regulate the activities of these foreigners and ensure that only qualified foreigners are allowed into the country, but like all the other existing laws, implementation has remained the sore point.

The Immigration Act clearly states that expatriate quota can only be granted to a firm for the recruitment of foreigners if the skill required is not available in the country.

It further states that where such approval is granted, subject to the above stated condition, among others, a Nigerian is expected to under-study the expatriate for a specified period, for eventual take over of the expatriate¢s position.

In the guideline posted on Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) website, it is stated that ²the citizenship and business department of the Nigerian Immigration Service has responsibility for administering and enforcing the provisions of the Immigration Act, 1963 as it relates to the establishment of business in Nigeria and the employment of expatriates." In other words, the department is entrusted principally with the following responsibilities:

Nigerians in Zambia are being subjected to unpleasant treatment allegedly on the direct orders of the newly-inaugurated President Michael Sata.

http://www.punchng.com/index.php/news/item/8734-zambia-targets-nigerians-for-indiscriminate-deportationincredulous.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Martin Uhuomoibhi, on Thursday said the Federal Government was aware of the situation and was using diplomatic channels to address the issue.

He said, "Nations respond in their own way to situations that confront them.

"We have very good bilateral relations with that country and we will do everything to keep it so.

"It is like business, there is always a risk in it. So, you take risks. We will normally not do anything that would hurt our diplomatic relations."

The situation came to light after a Zambian national daily, The Nation in its December 15 issue, exposed the systematic assault on Nigerians in that country.

A front page article with the caption, Sata Deports Nigerians, quoted government sources – including immigration officials – as saying they were acting on orders from above.

According to the newspaper, the president started deporting Nigerians, some simply for failing to support the Patriotic Front (Sata’s political party) in the run-up to the September 20, 2011 presidential and general elections.

The newspaper said, "Among the first to be deported is the Winners Chapel Pastor, Victor Adenedi (Adeniyi), who has received a letter directly from immigration authorities to that effect.

"Others include the manager of a bank that advanced for President Rupiah Banda (sic) $1m he used to construct the Mpundu Trust Fund, which police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela, claimed to be under investigation.

"Apparently working on instructions from the president, the immigration department has asked the duo to leave the country with immediate effect without giving proper reasons.

"According to information obtained by Daily Nation, government has asked Pastor Adenedi to leave the country with immediate effect for unexplained reasons or risk the closure of his church in spite of the fact that the clergyman has all appropriate documents to support his stay in the country.

Lagos Shuts 250 Unregistered Auto Spare Parts Shops

The Lagos State Government has shut down 250 unregistered auto and spare parts dealers’ shops in some parts of the metropolis for non compliance with the provisions of the law.
Officials of the Motor Vehicle and Administration Agency, MVAA stormed Egbega, Alimosho, Alagbado, Agege, Apapa, Ojo, Ijora areas of Lagos, southwest Nigeria and shut down the unregistered shops.
An auto dealer needs to pay N100,000 to register while a spare parts dealer needs to pay N50,000 for registration.
The enforcement is a joint one carried out by the MVAA with the Association of Auto and Spare Parts Dealers to rid the state of unregistered auto and spare parts dealers in the nooks and crannies of the state.
The state government vowed that the enforcement would be continuous until operators of auto and spare part dealers comply with the provisions of the law.
A statement from the MVAA said the government had declared zero tolerance on the dealers who operate illegally in the state.
The exercise is also to rid the state of unregistered auto and spare parts dealers selling vehicles with questionable sources and fake spare parts to unsuspecting members of the public.
Those whose shops had been shut will have to pay the stipulated amount of money as registration fees before they can be reopened, P.M.NEWS gathered.
The state enjoined auto and spare parts dealers to obtain their dealers permit as defaulters would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

It is terrible what some men can do because of the inability to control themselves. Maybe, it shouldn’t be called a lack of control, but an intentional act done to spite their wives or the women in their lives.

My ex- husband is a good example of the epitome of lack of control in men. Each time I think of his last escapades, l still wonder if it is possible for Femi not to have known that Amanda, the lady he met abroad is still the same childhood best friend whose photographs he had seen severally in my collections.

Amanda and I did everything together while we were growing up. We went to the same primary school and the same University. We were even posted to the same state during youth service. We had everything in common except for the men in our lives. In fact, we nearly liked the same men and it showed each time one of us brings home a guy.

Amanda got a visa to Britain, but it didn’t stop our friendship. We couldn’t always talk much because of the expensiveness of international calls, we couldn’t even do mails because Cyber café was just a new development and computers was just finding their way into the country to the very rich.

So as I was getting married, Amanda couldn’t make it to the wedding because she didn’t have a stay at that time and we decided that she shouldn’t come because she might not be able to go back if she dares it. The marriage formality was done and life went to normal with the twins coming and the girl following two years after.

It was exactly five years into my marriage when this seemingly impossible episode took place. My husband had being a playboy, but for some time, he had being acting like a changed man. So l thought all was well with my family. I thought he had finally settled down to enjoy being a dad to our children and a husband and friend to me.

His company sent him abroad for a six months course and we practically spoke every other day while he was there. He returned back and I got a call from my best friend, she said she was coming to Nigeria for her marriage and l was happy for her, she also said that she was already pregnant for the man in question.

Amanda came to town and rented a place, so most of the times l visit her because Femi returns from the office late and the children stay back at school for their lessons. I found out her husband to be’s name is also Femi with my Femi’s surname. I was surprised, but saw it as a coincidence; it was on one of my visits to her place that l met her fiancé who happens to be my own …

It has been one bad news after one uncomfortable news since Fashola started his second term. I was considerably saddened by the fact that he came to Toronto to buy used trains for his rail project in Lagos. Activist Canadians even spoke of the immorality of dumping wagons that are being phased out by the Toronto Transit Commission on a third world city. I am not sure that there ever was a clear mechanism for reaching out to Lagosians and letting them know that their governor was coming to Canada to buy second-hand wagons that even the sellers feared may be unsafe (http://www.nowtoronto.com/daily/news/story.cfm?content=182186). I was disappointed that Fashola’s cerebral mind did not grasp the ideological implications of our people always being considered only good enough for oyinbo used products. In buying those used trains, Fashola placed economics over human pride and dignity. Then came the LASU school fees fiasco and the bizarre rationalizations offered by the governor. I have been in the University system my entire adult life. Fashola’s rationalizations of the fee hike were pathetic. His handlers should have told him to keep quiet. I was still digesting the school fees fiasco when Fashola added to my list of worries by egregiously mishandling the Lekki Toll peaceful protest march. I never knew that I would see the day when a legitimate peaceful protest would be violently dispersed by Fashola – a lawyer! What went wrong? What happened? Before night falls on what had the potential to be a brilliant political legacy, can anything be done? Can he be rescued from his debilitating financial peonage to his political Godfather, the underground source of his problems? What is left of the cerebral Fashola that I described so enthusiastically in this 2008 essay? Enjoy:

Babatunde Fashola: The Loner of Sodom
(first published October 27, 2008)

One of the earliest instances of the ubiquitous act of haggling in West African markets is recorded in Christian mythology. The iniquities of the city of Sodom having reached the ears of the Christian God, he decided to terminate the bacchanals by destroying the city. Fortunately, he had the good mind to seek the counsel of Abraham, his faithful servant. Abraham reminded God of the unfairness of destroying fifty righteous people along with the iniquitous majority. God answered: “if I find fifty righteous people, I will not destroy the city”. Sensing opportunity, Abraham began haggling. What about forty-five? Forty nko? E no gree thirty? Baba God, how about twenty now? By now a Nigerian trader would have lost patience and exclaimed: “you dey craze? You wan spoil my market dis early morning? Go price your mama market like dat! Oloshi!” Not God. He was in the mood to indulge Abraham. Ten? Five? We know the rest of the story. Apart from Lot who was already on his way to safety, God found none. No not one. This story comes to mind as I try to account, tentatively and extremely cautiously, for the mind of Babatunde Fashola, the current Governor of Lagos state, against the backdrop of the kalahari of the mind we call leadership and public service in Nigeria.

Let me enter some notes before I proceed. I am one of those intellectuals who harbor total contempt for the quality of the minds in power – and in government – in Nigeria. Lest I be accused of trying to carve an Archimedean space of non-implication in the morass I critique, I am the first to admit that my constituency, broadly defined as the knowledge industry, bears enormous responsibility for either vacating the space of governance and leadership for minds only slightly equal to orangutans – the orangutans I encounter in my subscription to National Geographic are better organizers and envisioners of orangutan society than Nigerian leadership is of Nigerian society - or participating in governance in a much more disastrous fashion than the obtuse rulers who invited them to “come and eat” in the first place.

Politics / Shell Oil Spill Off Nigeria Likely Worst In Decade by aloyemeka1: 2:46am On Dec 23, 2011
Shell oil spill off Nigeria likely worst in decade
By JON GAMBRELL | AP – 1 hr 59 mins ago

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — An oil spill near the coast of Nigeria is likely the worst to hit those waters in a decade, a government official said Thursday, as slicks from the Royal Dutch Shell PLC spill approached the country's southern shoreline.
The slick from Shell's Bonga field has affected 115 miles (185 kilometers) of ocean near Nigeria's coast, Peter Idabor, who leads the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, told The Associated Press. Idabor said the slick continued to move toward the shore Thursday night, putting at risk birds, fish and other wildlife in the area.
Shell, the major oil producer in Nigeria, said late Thursday the spill came from a "flexible export line" connecting the offshore field to a waiting tanker. The company published photographs of the spill, showing a telltale rainbow sheen in the ocean, but said it believes that about 50 percent of the leaked oil has already evaporated.
The source of the leak has been plugged and experts from Britain were coming to help with the cleanup, Idabor said. Nigerian Navy ships also had been sent into the area to help control the spill, he said.
Shell estimates the Bonga spill likely was less than 40,000 barrels, or 1.68 million gallons. That's about the same amount of oil spilled offshore in 1998 at a Mobil field. The 1998 spill saw oil slicks extended for more than 100 miles (some 160 kilometers) to Lagos, the country's commercial capital.
"Since the Mobil spill, this is just about the most major one," Idabor said.
Nigerian authorities hope to use oil booms and chemicals to disperse or collect the spilled oil, Idabor said. In a statement, Shell said its Nigerian subsidiary already had sent ships out to the slick to use dispersant on the oil sheen. The company also said it would use infrared equipment to trace places where the sheen is the thickest.
However, the size of the spill may be even larger. SkyTruth, a nonprofit group based in West Virginia that uses satellite imagery to detect environmental problems, estimated the oil spill might stretch across roughly 350 square miles (920 square kilometers) of ocean — three times what Nigerian authorities believe.

Nigerian Police Arrests Year-Old Baby In Benue State
Posted: December 22, 2011 - 20:09

The Police in Benue State have taken hostage an entire family, including a one-year old baby, in an effort to compel the baby’s journalist-father to turn himself over to them for a story published by his newspaper.

The baby is Wuese-ter Ibya, who was seized along with its mother, Faith Ibya, as well as Grace Ibya.

Mrs. Faith Ibya is the wife of Henry Ibya, the Benue State Correspondent of Premier Newspaper, and Grace is his sister.

In a statement, the management of Roobbs Communications Network Limited, which publishes The Premier Newspaper, said that the family was forcibly taken as hostages in order to force Mr. Ibya to report himself to the police.
“We are reliably informed that the police authorities in Benue State are acting under the instruction of the governor who was visibly angered by the uncomplimentary story about his wife which bordered on extortion of money from Benue women,” the statement said, “under the guise of improving the lot of Benue women in the celebration of the fifth edition of Benue Women, where the women were coerced to pay unwholesome amounts of money, despite the state government having released the sum of N100 million for the said function.”

Roobbs Communications described placing Mr. Ibya's wife, year-old baby and sister under arrest as “barbaric” and out of tune with the laws of the Federal Government of Nigeria, particularly in view of the new the Freedom of Information law.

“It is sad that the Nigerian police, despite spirited efforts by the government to redeem its battered image and position it on proper pedestal to discharge its duties in accordance with the law, has continued to shoot itself in the foot with its recklessness and abusive tendencies,” the newspaper management said, calling for the hostages to be released with immediate effect and the law allowed to prevail.

Igwe Nwabufo Ezeude and two of his house maids were injured in the midnight explosion.
Though no one could ascertain the cause of the explosion, residents suspected a bomb blast.
Others also claimed that it might be a cooking gas cylinder.
Police spokesman Emeka Chukwuemeka confirmed the incident.
The palace has since been cordoned off. Adjoining streets and family compounds were littered with debris and shattered glasses, windows and door frames.
A worker at the office of the Palace Secretary said the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer as well as the bomb disposal squad had visited the place.
The officers, he said, have taken samples of some of the debris and shrapnel.
An eye witness, who gave his name as Ikenna, said the explosion occurred at about 12.30am.
He, however, doubted whether it was a gas cylinder because no one was cooking in the kitchen at the time.
Ikenna said rescuers rushed into the palace when they heard the monarch and his maids shouting.
According to him, they rushed them to a private hospital at Nkpor. He refused to give the name of the hospital.

Crime / 2 Men Arrested For Rapeing A Man by aloyemeka1: 2:16am On Dec 23, 2011
Two Men Docked For Raping Man
Two men, Chinenye Peter, 30 and Elijah Michael, 23 have been arraigned before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, southwest Nigeria for sleeping with a man they met on Facebook.
The men, who are friends, were accused of raping their Facebook friend, Bosun Fayankinnu, after stripping him naked.
The police alleged that the accused stripped him naked and fondled his penis before inserting their manhood in his anus. After the act, they demanded money from him in return for his nude photographs taken during the indecent act.
The incident happened at 11, Appollo Street, Makoko, Yaba Lagos, residence of the accused.
P.M.NEWS gathered that Chinenye and Michael met Fayankinnu on the Facebook. They started chatting before Fayankinnu decided to pay them a visit in their house at Yaba.
It was during the visit that the duo allegedly assaulted the victim by raping him.
The men, however, denied that they forcefully stripped him naked. They claimed that he stripped himself naked.
The victim, it was learnt, parted with his handsets and ATM card as a condition for his release and promised to bring the money requested by the accused.
On the arranged day, the complainant lodged a report at the Adekunle Station and policemen followed him to the house where they arrested the accused.
They were arraigned on a 12-count charge of criminal conspiracy, assault and unnatural offence under sections 352, 516 and 353 of the Criminal Code, Cap.17, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.
One of the charges read: “That you, the defendants on the same date, time and place, did strip the victim naked and handle his penis and other parts of his body.”
Another count reads: “That you, the defendants at the same time, place and date did attempt to penetrate the victim’s anus with your penis.”
They pleaded not guilt to the charges and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. S. K. Matepo, granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was later struck out because the complainant refused to show up in court.

Religion / Re: What If That Girl Sue Oyedepo? by aloyemeka1: 1:48am On Dec 22, 2011
desthan:

Lets looks at this un-emotionally

First of all, there is no way Oyedepo will see that girl outside the walls of his church and slap her nor will that girl see Oyedepo in the open and kneel before him.

She went to that church on her freewill. Even went as far as coming out and kneeling before Oyedepo for deliverance. This simply means she has accepted Oyedepo's authority, and has also consented to any method Oyedepo chooses to use to cure her of her predicament. whether it be by flogging, hanging her upside down or whatever.

So sueing Oyedepo is out of the question because she was not coerced or forced, she came out voluntarily.

I really did not see any moral in what the bishop did, but what can i say. . . . you go to people to dig up dirt in you, then you expect them to use a spoon. . . . c'mon y'all.

So if you come to my house, I am free to rap.e, abuse, assault or even cut off your head because you were not coerced into coming to my house?. Did she sign any disclaimer that waives her rights to protection in case of any form of abuse from the bishop?
