Crime / Corps Member, Others Arrested For Kidnapping by aloyemeka1: 1:48am On Dec 16, 2011

Corps member, others arrested for kidnapping
Written by James Azania, Benin

A National Youth Service Corps member in Osun State, Kenneth Arabame, has been arrested for the alleged kidnap of a 67-year-old woman at Ubiaja in Edo State.

Arabame, a graduate of Economics of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, was among five suspected kidnappers paraded by the State Security Service on Thursday in Benin.

Others paraded were Oboh Ikhuoria, a Banking and Finance graduate of AAU, Jimoh Edobor, Isioma Jato and Amos Peters.

According to the Edo State Director of the SSS, Bello Bakori, two other members of Arabame’s gang are serving different jail terms.

The suspects, however, denied involvement in the crime, saying they were only invited to assist in collecting ransoms or rescuing kidnapped victims.

Arabame claimed a friend invited him to Ubiaja to help in pushing the vehicle that was used in transporting a victim.

The SSS director also said the command recovered N680,000 from some militants in two camps in Ovia South-West Local Council Area of the state.

Bakori however said the suspects could not be paraded “because of security reasons.”

Politics / Lagosians Plan A 10,000 Man March Against Fashola's Toll Plan by aloyemeka1: 1:42am On Dec 16, 2011
Tension as Lagos govt insists on toll collection
on DECEMBER 16, 2011 · in SPECIAL REPORT

BY INNOCENT ANABA, DAPO AKINREFON & GBENGA OKE

With just two days to the planned commencement of tolls collection at Admiralty Circle plaza on the ever-busy Lekki –Eti-Osa Expressway, palpable anxiety is already being generated in the area as residents of Eti-Osa, Epe and Ibeju-Lekki have vowed to resist the move.

Messrs Lekki Concession Company Limited LCC, the concessionaire handling the expansion of the 49 kilometre road, had early this month, announced December 18, as the new date for the commencement of tolls collection on the road. The company hinged its decision to begin tolls collection on the first toll plaza on its provision of alternative routes to motorists who may not be favourably disposed to the payment of toll.
Residents kick, plan 10,000 man march

The Lekki-Epe Toll gate
Already, community leaders from Lekki are threatening to mobilise over 10,000 aggrieved protesters in 73 estates in Lekki, Etiosa and Ibeju lekki to block the road should the LCC go ahead with the plan.

At a press briefing at the Ikota Shopping Complex, representatives of the Residents’ Association called on the LCC and the Lagos State Governor not to create what they called “uncontrollable chaos” in Lagos with the planned tolling against the wishes of the people.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Chairman of the Lekki-Eti-osa-Epe Residents Association, Mr. Abioye Akerele, said: “We are peace loving people and the government should not take our posture for granted. This road that they want to toll, has been existing for over twenty years and if LCC came to add an additional lane, they cannot insist on tolling the already existing lanes.

It is unacceptable that those of us who are from here will have to pay money to enter our ancestral homes. It is totally unacceptable. There are over 73 villages along this axis made up of peasant people; how does government expect them to cope with the attendant rise in cost of living that will arise from the tolling?”

Health / Fake Cigarettes Hit Nigeria by aloyemeka1: 1:32am On Dec 15, 2011
CPC Cautions Firm Over Sub-Standard Cigarette

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has drawn the attention of Leaf Tobacco & Commodities (Nig.) Limited to the circulation of a sub-standard cigarette, Peterfield Special Menthol Cigarette, believed to be its product circulating in Nigerian markets, a statement signed by the Deputy Director (Public Relations), CPC, Abiodun Obimuyiwa, has said.
CPC, in a letter to the managing director of the company, alleged that the cigarette currently circulating in the country has failed labelling requirements, making it to be suspect for consumption by consumers.

According to the letter, “Samples of the said cigarette, which supposedly belongs to your company, show among others, that the pack has no best before dates, there is no number on the NIS logo, which indicates non- certification of the product and the address on the pack is not the same as the factory address.”
The CPC letter stated: “The fact is that the absence of these features constitutes gross violation of the labelling requirements for cigarette products in Nigeria”, adding that “we are by this letter requesting you to explain to the Council within seven (7) days of the date of this letter” why necessary sanctions should not be applied.
The agency directed the company to make its position known within the stipulated period, threatening that a failure would not only lead to immediate nation-wide mopping up of the cigarette, but would also attract some sanctions in line with its enabling law.
The letter stated: “Please note that failure to give satisfactory explanation will attract the removal of the said Perterfield Special Menthol cigarette from the market in line with the Council’s enabling law, without further recourse to you, and may result in sanctions against your company”.
The Council has during its recent surveillance of the Nigerian markets discovered the existence of the cigarette, which it found to have fallen short of the labelling requirements expected of all cigarettes meant for consumption in Nigeria.

44 per cent Nigerians have decayed teeth -Minister

Written by Muda Oyeniran, Lagos
Thursday, 15 December 2011

The Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, has described the oral health situation in Nigeria as unimaginable, disclosing that 44 per cent of Nigerians have decayed teeth.

He disclosed this in Lagos, on Tuesday, at the launch of the second phase of “Live, Learn and Laugh,” an initiative of Unilever Plc designed to raise awareness on the oral health problem in the country.

Towards this end, the minister disclosed that arrangements had been concluded to launch a national oral health policy, which would help to create awareness on the importance of oral health to the overall health of the citizens of the country.

“Very soon, the national oral health policy will be launched. It’s just a matter of days. In fact, we are trying to fix a date that would be convenient for the Federal Ministry of Health, key stakeholders and our international partners. It has got the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and it is based on integrating oral health programme into the national health programme,” he explained

Chukwu, who was represented by Dr Bimpe Adebiyi, Chief Dental Surgeon of the the ministry, decried the low level of awareness of oral health in Nigeria.

According to her, the objective of the oral health policy was to raise oral health awareness among 70 per cent of the population, adding that it would also help medical professionals to know their boundaries as far as treatment of patients were concerned.

While emphasising the importance of oral health to individuals, he listed diseases associated with the teeth to include hypertension, diabetes and stroke.

lastpage:

@Commissioner Kuye
So, the reason for the "gift" has been explained, along wit the gift itself!
Does anyone remember when Late MKO Abiola was detained in Prison and the Ooni of Ife (who was supposed to be the Paramount Yoruba Oba and a defender of Yoruba interest) was invited to Aso Rock? Only for him to come out and to everyone's consternation, the Ooni said: "The Man (Abacha) was making Sense"! grin grin
A few people said the Ooni got a lot of Ghana-must-go "gifts", to sound like that! shocked

Again, when our late President was in the throes of death (Or probably dead a long time before then; RIP), some "traditional rulers and religious leaders" where invited to "see him in action", they came out and said "The president was actually very well and was just doing basic exercise like push-ups, somersaults grin , running 100M-dash, e.t.c, just to get his muscles back in shape, to run Nigeria better! But "The Man Died"! lipsrsealed

Thus, we can sum-up that these traditional rulers have not only lost respect, they have become clowns, tools in the hands of "every" government in power and a disgrace to the traditional stools they sit on!
Most of them have become "beggers-to-government" instead of fulfilling their traditional role of custodians of our traditions! How can such an Oba fulfil his traditional role of "correcting or speaking truth to power"?

No wonder a Governor can just remove an Oba, anytime he likes! Where is the "traditional, spiritual selection process" that our forefathers use in selecting who occupies the esteemed traditional stool, in those days? What we have now are "cash-and-carry" Obas thus, their words holds nothing to the average Nigerian.

It might interest you that the govt has also copped-up to the strategy and uses money/gifts as inducement to these "men-of-the-belly", to make them "parrot" any unpopular policy they want to implement, hence the "instruction" of "a Commissioner" to "an Oba"! (Lord have mercy!)

Whether the people (subjects) still listen to these Obas or see them as a "modern-day joke  and "Area-Boyz", is out there for everyone to discern! grin grin

Lastpage

BTW: Whenever you introduce "ethnicity" into a serious issue like this, you make it sound trivial and it deflects away from the real bone of contention. What is wrong, is wrong; irrespective of who the perpetrator is, Period.

500% Gbam except the part that says "our late president". Abacha was our late dictator and not president.

OPC joins calls for Sovereign National Conference
Written by  James Azania, Benin

The Oodua People’s Congress has called for the convening of a Sovereign National Conference to address the problems facing the country.

The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation said  during its National Coordination Council meeting in Benin, Edo State on Tuesday SNC remained the only option to tackle the  challenges facing the country.

President of the organisation, Chief Gani Adams, who addressed members, denied that OPC  was solely founded to fight past oppressive military regimes, declaring that the “Oodua fights against any manner of injustice.”

He said, “There is no doubt that Nigeria is being confronted by many challenges that  confound its leadership.  It is our belief that nobody knows it all; you can only know what you harbour in your own mind;  but not what others think is the right thing to do.

Chief Gani Adams

“It is because of  this reason that we must look into the issue of convening a Sovereign National Conference. The SNC will enable us to explore better ways through which we  desire to live together as citizens of this  country.

“It is not just right to continue the way we are going when all can see the damage we are doing to ourselves and the country. We have so many problems, including  corruption, insecurity, epileptic power supply and investors apathy and  yet we are reluctant to do what is proper.

“Any government that does not have organisations that serve as a watchdog could be bereft of ideas.”

He said the Benin  meeting was to create awareness about the organisation and “reawaken its culture of identity.”

Kaduna Bomb Blast : Igbo Traders Count Losses-PM News, Lagos

After yesterday’s bomb blast that killed 14 persons and injured several others at Ogbomoso, by Katsina Road, Kaduna, Kaduna State, Northwest Nigeria, the survivors have started counting their losses.

The bomb blast, according to witnesses was carried out by two suspected bombers alleged to be members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

Scene of the blast in Kaduna.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the suspected bombers were on a motorcycle when they threw a bag containing devices suspected to be bomb into a shop.

Immediately, a heavy explosion rocked the area, pulling down the targetted shop.

All the four apprentice spare parts traders inside the shop were killed instantly.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ballah Narasawa, however, disagreed with this account of the incident. He told newsmen at the scene of the blast that it was caused by a gas explosion.

When P.M.NEWS visited the scene this morning, the survivors and witnesses insisted that it was a bomb blast. They stated that the traders in the area do not sell gas but deal in motor spare parts.

One of the survivors, Fabian Ugochukwu lost three colleagues to the explosion, his boss and two apprentices.

He expressed displeasure over the police report that the blast was caused by gas explosion.

Ugochukwu said: “How can it be gas explosion when the entire Ori Apata area vibrated and over 14 people were killed over 100 metres away from the scene.”

Another survivor who is the Chairman of Ogbomoso Road Traders Association, Sunday Mba, told P.M.NEWS that not less than N200 million worth of property was destroyed and cash worth N20 million burnt. These records, Mba said, were gathered from survivors yesterday and this morning.

Mba also confirmed that 12 spare parts traders and two other tenants residing in houses behind the affected shops were killed in the blast.
A shop apprentice, Abdul Malik Ayodele wept as he narrated how his boss was killed in the fire that erupted following the blast.

Ayodele said: “I have no other means of survival. My boss is dead. I lost four other friends who died in the explosion. It is only God that will punish the bombers.”

One of the traders who lost about N10 million in spare parts to the explosion, Sunday Azubuogwu, a dealer in Mercedes Benz spare parts said he was lucky to escape the blast.

“Though I lost more than N10 million in goods which I received on credit from a spare parts distributor two days before the incident, I have reasons to thank God for my life,” Azubuogwu said.

He lamented what he described as unnecessary attack on Igbo traders in Kaduna, adding, “even when the state government decides to compensate all those who lost their goods and friends in the bomb blast, the traders within Ori Apata can never be psychologically stable because we saw our brothers burnt to death and there was nothing we could do.”

Though Kamarudeen Ibrahim and his younger brother, Suleiman Ibrahim, reside behind the Igbo traders shop along Ogbomoso Road, about 20 metres away from the scene of the blast,  they expressed shock at the attack on the traders.

They lamented that they lost a brother and a sister who were trapped inside the fire at their residence close to the traders’ shops.

Another victim who simply identified himself as Ifeanyi, younger brother of Onyebuchi, whose shop was directly attacked, said he was sent on an errand by his late brother when he heard the slam.

Ifeanyi narrated: “My brother had spare parts worth nothing less than N15 million because he was dealing in Mercedes Benz spare parts. All the goods and the shop were completely destroyed.”

Ifeanyi, a trader who hails from Anambra State in southeast Nigeria said he was left with no option but to return to his state.
