Racoon:How CAN Introduced Religious Variable into Nigeria's Political Equation How did we get here? By Simeon Kolawole_ Before the late 1980s, religion was not a defining factor in national politics. Alhaji Shehu Shagari, elected president in 1979, was a Fulani Muslim surrounded by Christians. His No 2, Dr Alex Ekwueme, was an Igbo Christian. The No 3 was Dr Joseph Wayas, a Christian from today’s Cross River state who was senate president. The No 4 was Chief Edwin Ume Ezeoke, a Christian from today’s Anambra state who was Speaker. All the service chiefs were Christians: Lt Gen Alani Akinrinade (army chief, later defence chief); Lt Gen Sanda Jallo (Army Chief); Vice Admiral Akin Aduwo (Naval Chief); and AVM John Yisa-Doko (Air Chief). The Inspector General of Police was Mr Sunday Adewusi. In fact, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the presidential candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in 1979, fielded a Christian-Christian, Southerner-Southerner ticket: Chief Philip Umeadi, from today’s Anambra state, was his running mate. Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, candidate of the Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP), also did a Christian-Christian ticket, pairing with Dr Ishaya Audu from Kaduna state. Although Shagari’s Muslim-Christian pairing won the election with 5.6 million votes, the Christian-Christian tickets of Awolowo and Azikiwe did not do badly, netting 4.9 million and 2.8 million respectively. Awo and Zik got a total of 7.7 million votes. That was the Nigeria I grew up in as a primary school kid. Military governments were not sold to the religious thing either. When Gen Yakubu Gowon, a Northern Christian, was Head of State, Vice Admiral Joseph Edet Akinwale Wey, the Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, was his second-in-comman. The Vice-Chairman of the Federal Executive Council was Awolowo, the Minister of Finance. Effectively, Gowon’s military and civilian deputies were both Christians. Religion was of no consequence. Maj-Gen Muhammadu Buhari and Brigadier (later Maj-Gen) Babatunde Idiagbon — both Fulanis, both Muslims, both Northerners — were No 1 and No 2 in 1983-85 and I can’t remember any objections. That was what Nigeria used to be. Something definitely went wrong thereafter as religious crises erupted under Gen Ibrahim Babangida. When Bashorun MKO Abiola, a Yoruba Muslim, wanted to pick his deputy for the June 12, 1993 presidential election, we had lost our innocence. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) warned him not to nominate a Muslim, otherwise Christians would not vote for him. They gave him a list of Northern Christians to pick from: Dr Chris Abashiya, Dr Ishaya Audu, Mr Bala Takaya and Mr Paschal Bafyau. These were no political heavy hitters. Abiola achieved the North-South balance by picking Amb Babagana Kingibe, albeit a Northern Muslim. They won nine of the 16 northern states. The cold calculations in Tinubu’s camp, I should guess, were in favour of a Muslim running mate. And I suppose that these might be their essential assumptions. One, a Muslim-Muslim ticket should not be a problem for the Muslim North where the bulk of the votes are. It should be a major counter-offer to an Atiku presidency since the president and vice-president would be Muslims. Two, it should also not be a problem for the South-West, apart from the cosmopolitan Lagos. Tinubu is the homeboy and religion is not yet a major political factor, although CAN and Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) are working overtime, along with fifth columnists, to poison Yorubaland with bitter bigotry. Three, their calculation may be that those most likely to be vocally opposed to a Muslim-Muslim ticket are voters and commentators from the South-South, South-Eest and Christian North who do not vote for APC on a normal day. Even if Tinubu were a pastor, APC would still be a no-no for many voters in these constituencies. by Simon Kolawole |

Throwback:Just like the iconic 1979 to 1983 UPN Lagos State Muslim-Muslim Guber victory of Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Chief Rafiu Jafojo. The UPN went on to become a phenomenal success story under the government of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the Governor of Lagos State. Nigeria was very tolerant back in the day. Not today that some ethnic and religious bigots exist but they will all fail. Tolerance, competence and results are key points to focus on! |

SamOchuko:@SamOchuko, thanks for your objective feedback here. Did you know there was a Muslim-Muslim UPN Guber electoral win in Lagos State in 1979 to 1983 under Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Chief Rafiu Jafojo? One of the NL Mods posted on NL in 2016 that he is related to the late iconic Lagos State Deputy Governor and Lagos indigene Rafiu Jafojo. Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, endorsed both men by raising their hands in 1979. What some of the very ignorant and emotionally weak Ibo online posters such as the OP who insult and call Yorubas b*stards (yaribanza is the asinine term only Ibos use on their various sick propaganda websites) and insult Yorubas Muslims who have the SECOND largest Muslim population after the Hausas and ahead of the Kanuris of the North-East of Nigeria do not realise is that Islam has existed in Yorubaland for over 500 years in the Oyo Empire and it came from Mali into Yorubaland via international trade not through any jihad! This is the reason why Yorubas used to call Islam "esin imale" meaning in Yoruba language, "the religion of Mali." In fact there were many Muslim Yoruba military commanders and generals (such as Balogun Oderinlo) in the Ibadan army in the 1800s who defeated the invading jihadists on several battle fronts thereby defending the whole of Yorubaland up to Eko from conquest, just like the Kanuris who have had Islam for 1000 years did by losing and winning battles to ward off the Fulah jihadists. Majority of the Yoruba indigenes of Lagos State, i.e., the Aworis (in 17 LGAs) and the Ijebus (in Ibeju-Lekki, Ikorodu, and Epe LGAs) are mainly Muslims [right up to Aworilands and Ijebulands stretching across the Lagos State border into Ogun State] with some having close relatives of other religious faiths living peacefully. I'm not a Muslim, but these facts are true and I must commend you Niger Delta folks and other ethnicities on NL for not stiring up hate speech and ethnic hatred here on NL like the bitter Ibo male elements do here who always act like victims but infact are the first to incite hate speech. I've been on NL for 17 years now since 2005 and I can say the only major time that ND folks such as the Ijaws were upset was during the 2014 to 2015 election cycle when GEJ lost, but after that they let things slide. There is a popular 1960s video were Ahmadu Bello bluntly accused the Ibos (a white man interviewed him) of wanting to dominate his Northern people. Chief Harold Dappa-Biriye was an indigene of Bonny Island (who rejected Ojukwu's illegal biafra in favour of the newly created Old Rivers State) and regarded as the father of Ijaw nation also in a candid 1998 Guardian interview done in PH also accused the 1960s Ibo political and military wing of wanting to dominate Nigerians, while trying to rival the Yorubas who were far ahead of them in every position. I still have the scanned 1998 article in my Google Drive! The young Ibos of today mostly haven't learned lessons from the mistake of their older 1960s folks based on the hate speeches and inciting fake article posts like the one on this insidious thread. All the best. Cc:Helinues, seunmsg, dsalvo, omenka, LegendHero

Mstravelindiva:Great @Mstravelindiva, I love your awesome feedback on those Vietnamese cuisine locations in Colorado and more. Do let us have some snipets of your visits to Singapore and Malaysia in the NL travel section. I'm certain the thread on Singapore would make front page because of the mystique that Singapore exhudes as a developed city-state from a former fishing settlement in the 1800s. Back in the early 2000s, I grabbed a copy of the book, "From Third World To First" by Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore, and the book gave me massive insights about the cultures, ethnic traditions, and the developmental failures and successes of a modern state. Enjoy your day in AZ. ![]() Stay safe. |
DesChyko:Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu travels multiple times every year to the United States of America and yet these simpletons keep recycling these false allegations that he is a drug baron. If he ever was, the U.S. would have gotten him arrested long ago and thrown into jail. He regularly interacts with members of the U.S. Government. It is time to stop this repeated defamation of Tinubu's image near every election cycle by a section of Nigeria who are ethnic bigots! There is a digital trail or records of the fake news they and their paid trolls have been posting online despite being corrected time and time again! It is NOW time to launch a MAJOR sting operation to arrest all the idiots posting all these fake NEWS wherever they are in the world. They should NOT be forgiving until they get to jail. It is Tinubu's and his grown up children's inability to get these people arrested that has led to people thinking that they can defame this man with IMPUNITY and it has had a DEVASTATING EFFECT on his image but it is NOT too late to correct it. This is the Social Media age and bad news travels fast. Silence is no MORE the best answer for a fool! Tinubu and his Tinubu's Media Team need to know that. IP addresses and other advanced methods will be used to fish these kids and simpletons out for punishment in the courts of law. I hate it when people lie and criminally mislead the public online and offline! Below is Asiwaju Tinubu's private plane that he got over 16 years that he uses to regularly fly to the United States. Even the Japanese Parliament has passed into law major punishments for those who engage in online insults and harrassment which have led to the death of a prominent Japanese TV star in 2020. It is time for Nigeria to do the same thing like Japan, this time, with a little more harsher punishment. There is a precedent in Japan for Nigeria to copy because Nigerian cyberspace has become so toxic for many folks with fake news flying around. No country should EVER allow this kind of thing which can lead to a major Civil War. The BBC even did a report in the online and offline "fake news industry" in Nigeria and the need to ALWAYS FACT-CHECK. Mynd44:Mynd44, I'm just reading this thread for the first time. So Alhaji Rafiu Jafojo was your step Grandpa? That's good to know. He was a great man. It's a very small world indeed. The "6-Degrees of Separation" is indeed real... Although the latest is that it's now known as "4-Degrees of SEPARATION." Alhaji Lateef Jakande and my father related on the professional and business levels too [Jakande's biological father and mother are originally from Omu Aran in Kwara State but migrated to live in Lagos Island, where Lateef Jakande was born and the folks loved him even though his parents weren't originally from Lagos, but a Yoruba town in Kwara]. I was responding to a post by someone on NL who said why didn't Asiwaju Tinubu use a so-called Muslim-Muslim ticket in Lagos and I pointed him to the fact that Alhaji Lateef Jakande and Alhaji Rafiu Jafojo were both Muslims and they won the Lagos State Guber elections in 1979 and were in office till 1983. I'm NOT a Muslim but even that 1979 Lagos Guber Jakande and Jafojo joint ticket, and the M.K.O Abiola and Kingibe 1993 joint tickets were NOT problematic issues to me and many folks back then. I remember the legendary Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, the leader of the UPN raising their hands to endorse both of them back in 1979 and 1983. All the best. |

Lanrelagboi:It is time to ACTIVATE a MAJOR STING OPERATION to arrest that dweeb called David Hundeyin for persistently writing trash and blatantly defaming innocent people. He should be extradicted immediately by INTERPOL to answer to charges of spreading FAKE NEWS and defamation of character. I however blame Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, his grown up children, and his Media Team for NOT being pro-active to get those liars arrested: such as Olabode George, that wannabe investigative journalist called David Hundeyin, 'Femi Aribisala, and the groups of Ibo trolls online [on NL, FB, Twitter, WhatsApp] who have been spoiling and defaming Asiwaju Tinubu since as far back as 2014 that I can remember. It is NOT too late to get them to answer charges in the court of law for defamation of character just like Tinubu did in 2015 by suing AIT and DAAR for billions of Naira. We are in the age of Social Media and bad news spreads fast. Silence is NOT the best answer for a fool in theses times. Certain Websites and news publications have been identified, and the people and ethnicities who are behind these fake stories are well-known. Tinubu MUST NOT forgive them LIKE HE FORGAVE Raymond Dokpesi and AIT due to the out-of-court-settlement AIT and DAAR reached with Tinubu because they had realised that they were guilty of spreading fake information on live TV. I'm REALLY pissed off with the slow response of Tinubu. It is time to make landfall like a vicious HURRICANE and get these people punished for seriously damaging the Tinubu family name. If Tinubu is really a drug baron like these idiots have been posting all over the Internet, Festus Keyamo would have long called out Tinubu and Tinubu would NOT have been able to visit the U.S. every year in his PRIVATE JET because the U.S. law enforcement agents would have arrested him! Period. I remember that even this year - 2022, Asiwaju Tinubu was made one of the special guests of honour at Dokpesi's birthday. So you can see that these folks are all friends.

Caseless:@Caseless, you're right. His calmness has a commanding presence. I wish Shinzo and Akie Abe had at least two kids to keep his legacy alive since he comes from a political family. Just like Shinzo Abe, many Japanese have moved on from the horrendous events of the December 7, 1941 U.S. Pearl Habor bombings in Hawaii by Japan, including Hiroshima and Nagasaki where those U.S. nukes exploded in 1945. Lack of forgiveness leads to negative energy on a long-term basis and the Japanese clearly realise this. In a documentary I watched over 20 years ago (in the 1990s), one of the U.S. pilots (crew member) who flew one of the planes that carried a nuke on board went back to Japan to pay his respects. Your absolutely right about Japan and China! For instance, the Nanking Province in China invasion by Japan forces was very brutal with mass rapes, just like the Russian (Soviet Union) Red Army engaged in brutal mass rapes on entering Berlin, Germany. Sincere apologies on all sides would heal all wounds. War has negative effects, but then countries have to be on guard to defend themselves after negotiations may have failed. All the best. ![]() |
peacefull:Thank you too @peacefull for stopping by on my thread. I wish you and all Japanese citizens the best and hope we all learn insightful lessons from former PM Shinzo Abe's life. Ciao. |
etokhana:Let me school you here and now. Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, the 2nd Republic Governor of Lagos State and his Deputy Governor Chief Rafiu Bakare Jafojo [Chief Rafiu Jofojo was the first Deputy Governor of Lagos State in the administration of Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande between October 1, 1979 and December 31, 1983], were both Muslims and they won the Lagos State Governorship election and they performed very well. ==> https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2016/04/24/ex-lagos-deputy-governor-jafojo-dies-at-80/ ==> http://thenationonlineng.net/jafojo-former-lagos-deputy-governor-dies-80-2/ ==> https://www.nairaland.com/3066230/rafiu-jafojo-dies-80-ex-lagos I remember that the legendary Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, of the UPN raised their hands to endorse both of them. Ambrose Ali was then the UPN Governor of Bendel State (now Edo and Delta States). The ACN also fielded Nuhu Ribadu and 'Fola Adeola (the ex-boss of GTB), in the Presidential race in 2011, and there was no uproar. Both men are Muslims. No where in the Nigerian laws and constitution states that the President must be a Muslim and the Vice President an Xtian and vice-versa. That would be illegal in a country like Nigeria where citizens practice well over 10 religions by my calculation with other citizens being Agnostics and more. It is the military boys in government from the Ibrahim Babangida era that started emotionally manipulating and patronising Nigerians by sponsoring pilgrimages while trying to promote only 2 religions and all that trash because they were getting out of ideas. This was to divert the attention of Nigerians from their cluelessness. Hope this helps. Cc: Mynd44, LegendHero, Seunmsg, Lanreagboi

LegendHero:Deep insights from you @LegendHero. |
Yorubalandlord:You are not a Yoruba! This is a mark of stupidity and desperation on your part you liar. No Yoruba would post trash or talk glibly like you have just done because many non-Muslim Yorubas have Muslim family members. Muslims are even in the majority among Yorubas based on the census figure projections from the 1950s. Let us know your real SE ethnicity. You created your new moniker today and you're falsely claiming to be a Yoruba while making inciting religious comments and even got odd likes for your unwise post. |

LegendHero:Deep insights. I would have prefered the titles: President of the Yoruba, Hausa, Ibo in the various states instead of using honoric titles such as Oba, Sarki, and Eze. |
Kobojunkie:Just to be clear... What I wrote is absolutely correct. Single mothers are usually adviced to get father-figures for their kids who can always advice and mentor the kids in the absence of their real fathers. These are global standard! Second, I haven't encouraged anyone to get married without getting the different aspects of their lives together. There have been many cases worldwide were men and women had their finances right, with some bank savings, but then things go south and divorce sets in after a man loses his job and becomes unable to care for his children's needs. |
Ttalk:Well said! The OP is being dishonest here... You and @helinues sussed him out. I just saw his insidious post today on a FP thread where he was campaigning for Atiku of PDP, his ethnic Fula kinsman to take over from the current Nigerian President who is also a Fula! Self-interest. |
TrueNigerian300:Well said... You used insults such as "fools" to describe specific people in your post, but you made valid points. Tinubu is from the South while Shettima is from the North and this is satisfactory enough for political balancing. It is mentally poor people who have been posting and talking B.S about the so-called M-M ticket. Article Score: 9/10 |
