A man from New York is going viral online after his estranged son wrote a scathing obituary.

Lawrence H. Pfaff Sr., who born in Belmont, N.Y., on April 16, 1941, died on June 27, 2022, according to an obituary published in the Florida Times over the holiday weekend.

He was 81, but lived “much longer than he deserved,” son, Lawrence H. Pfaff Jr. wrote.

“He is survived by his three children, no four. Oops, five children. Well as of 2022 we believe there is one more that we know about, but there could be more. His love was abundant when it came to himself, but for his children it was limited,” the obituary said.

“From a young age, he was a ladies’ man and an abusive alcoholic, solidifying his commitment to both with the path of destruction he left behind, damaging his adult children, and leaving them broken.”

Pfaff Jr., who said he hadn’t talked to his father in 30 years, wrote that Pfaff Sr. abused his first wife and children.

His father also had his gun and badge taken away by the New York Police Department after 20 years in the NYPD due to alcohol addiction and “negligent at best” service.

“He possesses no redeeming qualities for his children, including the ones he knew, and the ‘ones he knew about,’” the obituary said.
“Lawrence, Sr.’s passing proves that evil does eventually die, and it marks a time of healing, which will allow his children to get the closure they deserve. Lawrence, Sr. can be remembered for being a father to many, and a dad to none.”

Pfaff Jr. said that he started writing the obituary before his father’s death as a form of liberation to help with his own healing process.
“Writing his obituary was a way for me to really cleanse myself and let that part of my life go. And so a year ago, I sat down and began to write it, not knowing I would have an opportunity in the near future to use it,” he said.

The obituary has been widely shared on social media, getting both praise and criticism. The Gannett Company, which owns the Jacksonville-based newspaper that published it, apologized and said the piece should have been flagged as inappropriate prior to publication.

“We regrettably published an obituary that did not adhere to our guidelines and we are looking into the matter further. We regret any distress this may have caused,” Gannett said in a statement.

The Canadian government is yet again aggressively trying to limit the number of asylum seekers from Nigeria who are flooding into Canada via the United States, officials said on Monday.

A recent investigation has revealed that over 9,000 Nigerian nationals have trekked through the notorious Roxham Road border into Canada illegally till date. They crossed on foot along a forest trail from New York state to Quebec.

The Canadian government had previously requested that the US authorities tighten their visa rules for Nigerians to try to prevent tourists from flying to the US and then hopping across the border to file Canadian refugee claims. Yet, the number of asylum-seekers entering Canada outside formal land border crossings has now reached its highest point since August 2017.

The increase follows the lifting of a pandemic-era order last December. Recall that since March 2020, border police had refused entry to all asylum-seekers in order to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Between January and February 2022 alone, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police intercepted over 2,500 asylum-seekers crossing the border outside formal land ports of entry, the vast majority crossing into Quebec.

These asylum-seekers often enter Canada because they do not enter at formal border crossings. Under the Safe Third Country Agreement, set to be contested at Canada's Supreme Court, Canada and the United States can turn back asylum-seekers in either direction at formal land border crossings.

'NIGERIANS ARE GETTING MORE DESPERATE'

Nigeria is set to end 2022 with the highest number of asylum seekers to Canada for the sixth year in a row. Nigeria overtook China as the country with the highest claims back in 2016. The country’s hold on the top spot is despite a major slowdown in asylum claim rates given global travel restrictions in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A survey conducted by the Africa Polling Institute (API), found the key “push factors” for the exodus of Nigerian immigrants to Canada to be due to Nigeria’s poor economy, heightened insecurity, perceived poor governance and Political persecution.

Volunteers who come to the border with water bottles or blankets and who try to ensure border-crossers' rights are respected have resumed their weekly trips to Roxham Road after suspending them during the pandemic, said Frances Ravensbergen, a coordinator for migrant advocacy group Bridges Not Borders.

Some would-be refugees are awaiting on standby in the United States, others are still in Nigeria until they feel they could make the trip to Canada via the United States, Bouchard said.

Many keep abreast of Canada's shifting regulations, "sometimes with some confusion," Bouchard said. But Bouchard thinks there is more than just Canada's lifted border closure at play. "People are desperate," he said.

He said the increase was also an indication that "under (President) Joe Biden the (U.S.) immigration policies have not really, really changed," especially regarding homosexuality refugee claims, which are seen as less likely to succeed in the United States.

U.S. apprehensions of migrants crossing from reached a 20-year high in 2020, and the Biden administration has been reluctant to roll back all the measures imposed by his predecessor Donald Trump.

The U.S. government did not immediately respond to a request by Afrotimes Newspaper for comment.

CANADA’S “OPEN DOORS”

While Canada’s skill-based immigration program offers immediate residency permits and a long-term pathway to citizenship, the country’s perceived openness to immigrants, particularly relative to the US in recent years, means it has also become subject to rising asylum claims as well.

Canada recently announced plans to welcome an additional 1.2 million immigrants over the next three years.

I certainly would recommend eating only at a reputable restaurant to ensure the food is handled and cooked properly. Some seafood can be eaten raw (I.e. sushi, oysters, etc.), however, it definitely needs to be prepared properly.

Thai food is different than Chinese, I’m not a Chinese food fan but love Thai and Vietnamese, their food is very tasty and I love how it’s prepared.

Indigenous construction firms were never trusted with the construction of a massive superhighway with 12 lanes, such as the Third Ring Road in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

Never in the history of the state did anything close to that happen because such jobs were reserved for construction giants like Julius Berger, RCC, MCC, etc.

Many indigenous construction firms that bid for such projects did so solely to raise their profiles.
Without a doubt, Governor Udom Emmanuel is a leader who believes in cultivating and developing the Akwa Ibom brand as part of his Dakkada Philosophy.

Besides, the Dakkada Philosophy invites all Akwa Ibom people to conquer their fears, break down the barriers to their success and rise to the faith of their greatness.

That is why the governor’s decision to allow an indigenous firm, Henzek Engineering, to compete with multinational construction companies should be commended.

While the company has shown itself as a rising star, it has also demonstrated its ability to compete on an equal footing with multinational construction corporations.

The high-quality delivery of the Third Ring Road, which is nearing completion, is a strong statement that if given the opportunity, an Akwa Ibom person can excel in any profession.

The quality of the work is evident to all, but more importantly, the meticulous finishing of the road has dissuaded critics who had argued that awarding such a large contract to an indigenous company would be a waste of public funds and result in subpar service.

One of the problems of road construction in Nigeria over the years has been durability rather than inflated costs, and Engr Uwem Okoko, Managing Director of Henzek Engineering, deserves all praise for meeting the contract's obligations.

The Third Ring Road was built in accordance with the required engineering methods, according to those who are familiar with the project.

Every step of construction was handled with strict engineering precision - the demolition and removal of unsuitable soil, grading and sloping, preparation of the subbase, installation of the binder and surface course, asphalt surfacing as well as installation of butt joints and transitions.

A thorough final roll will complete the project and deliver a five-star superhighway to the state.

But let’s get back to the basics. Earthwork is one of the major phases in road construction and involves the removal of topsoil, along with any vegetation before scraping and grading the road area into a finished “formation level.”

This is usually done using a tractor shovel, grader, or bulldozer. Below the formation level, it is important that the strength of the soil, also known as the “subgrade,” is tested prior to the beginning of earthwork.

That was what informed the decision of Henzek Engineering to remove over six feet of unsuitable soil, refilled the road with pure red earth and compact it in three stages during the earthworks.

A high-quality precast drainage system was developed before the earth was refilled, just like other multinational construction companies do.

Where necessary, underground drains were constructed to adequately evacuate and discharge flood water to their terminal points.

Following the completion of the earthwork, the company built three levels of subgrades, each of which was around 50 meters in thickness .

Before the binder course was rolled, the stone-base concrete was laid out to the desired subgrade thickness, which was about 100mm.

The company's approach to asphalting has also left many pondering why such a large quantity of bitumen was poured on a single road.

This is because after the binder course was completed, three levels of asphalt were laid with the stage measuring 50 meters of rough surface bitumen, second stage also measured 50 meters (and contained small stones mixture) and while the finishing was done with pure nylon asphalt which gave the road its smooth and glassy spectacle.

Idongesit Nkanga Avenue is 9.5 kilometers long and has 12 lanes; two middle-road drains, two side drains, six concrete road dividers, and three roundabouts with water fountains at the Oron, Nwaniba, and Aka Road connections.
The last two lanes of the lovely road are illuminated by solar-powered floor lights and double middle floor lights.
Another appurtenance of the road is the provision of a concrete floor on the median with a narrow earth path for planting trees and flowers.

As part of safety measures, the company has not only installed iron barricades along the entire length of the road to prevent users from indiscriminate crossing but has also created crossing points at every 100 or 200 meters.

The two last lanes of the superhighway are provided with concrete-top walk paths and holes for planting of trees to beautify the road.

The high quality, the sheer magnificence, and the sense of durability of the Third Ring Road have made many wonder whether it was constructed by a local company. And the answer is a resounding “YES.”

When it comes to the construction industry, Henzek Engineering has proven the pundits wrong by making a bold statement with Idongesit Nkanga Avenue finishing .

The company today employs more than 5,000 workers, including both skilled and unskilled labour, and has more than 300 pieces of machinery in its yard.

That is why we can confidently assert that Henzek Engineering has what it takes to carry out any type of construction job on any given day, at any given time.
