The only thing you can really do is to be confident.  Stand tall, carry yourself with dignity, speak your mind, dress appropriately for your age.

sorry if you guys felt misunderstood.  Just that I joined nairaland a couple days ago to get some insight into Nigerian people, attitudes and life.  But it seems like nearly every thread on romance or families seems to invariably find its way to some kind of trash talk of Nigerian men, often accompanied by some sort of bashing of western ways or people.  It's getting old fast, no offense.  Maybe this just isn't the place for me.  undecided

It's so sad to see all these posts on here with these silly ideas of far away places.

Why can't we just agree that good, faithful men can come from any country? Why can't we agree that New Yorkers have just as much chance of being good people as Africans?

All these generalisation just distract you from seeing the truth about individuals.
HealthRe: Pain-free Menstruation: How Achievable? by amberella: 10:15pm On May 31, 2008
You can talk to your doctor about the birth control pill and even try some different kinds until you find one that makes the pain subside.

Another option is the Mirena IUD.  It's about $300 US but it lasts for 5 years and you don't get your period. It also doesn't have the other side effects of the pill (mood swings, weight gain, etc.)

LOL, can't blame the little girl. Maybe she saw white skinheads on television dealing mercilessly with black folks somewhere in the western hemisphere and from that day on thought white people are the buggy man cool

As far as I am concerned, I will never forget how I was treated when I used to live in Germany back in the day. One word comes to mind: Horrible!!! After my experience in Germany, I never saw caucasians the same way again. I don't live in Nigeria but if I did and were to see white people, I don't think I wil even pay them any mind undecided Living abroad has opend my eyes to alot of things and made me realize how some human beings can be.
Well, I have a bit of German in me, so on behalf of my fellow whities, I'd like to apologise to you.

Growing up, I thought that racism was a thing of the past. Here in Canada, it's not socially acceptable to make racist comments. We're taught that everyone is equal and that skin color is just that - pigment. However, once I started dating my African husband, it became apparent to me how stupid and ignorant some of my fellow countrymen and women still are. They won't come out and say it but it's totally still here. Very shameful and disappointing.

I remember the first white guy that visited our home, i was only 8yrs old then . . . my brothers and i used to go peep at him just to wonder at his skin color and nose. cheesy Imagine our amazement when we finally discovered he ate (we thot he was a god!) Oh for the days of ignorance.
No offense, but that would make me uncomfortable. I hope the children won't stare at me.

I'm curious to know what you think of white foreigners living in Nigeria? Honesty is allowed here. Do you make any assumptions when you see a young white woman? Some people tell me white foreigners are treated better than some locals. Others seem to have negative stereotypes (ie: white women or westerners don't have strong family values, do not respect their parents, sleep around, etc.) Or do you simply not care and treat them the same way you would treat anyone else. Are there many white people living in your area?

Thank you.

Please read this or do some of your own research on the internet or elsewhere:

http://www.coolnurse.com/hymen.htm

Many girls and teens tear or otherwise dilate their hymen while participating in sports like bicycling, horseback riding, gymnastics or inserting tampons, or while masturbating. A girl may not even know this has occurred, since there may be little or no blood or pain involved when this happens. The tissues of the vulva are generally very thin and delicate prior to puberty. The presence or absence of a hymen in no way indicates whether or not a female is a virgin. * You are a virgin until you have sexual intercourse.*

Some hymens are elastic enough to permit a penis to enter without tearing, or they tear only partially, and there is NO bleeding at all. When adequately lubricated the vagina is fairly 'flexible' and will stretch without discomfort for most women. Sometimes, a woman has sex for years with no real 'tearing' at all, only stretching of the hymen and then at another time the same woman might tear from 'rough sex' or sex with a different partner with a larger penis. Remnants of the hymen are usually still present until a woman delivers a baby vaginally.

Abeg!!! Spare me the tales by moonlight
How come once we start talking bout this, you guys quickly draw out the 'Motorcycle hymen rupture' card
This only happens in abonormal occassions, one in how many?

How come our mothers and grandmothers never used to have their hymen ruptured during farmwork?
How did our forefathers find them?
They did, my friend.  As time progresses, the medical community learns more and more.  In the time of our grandparents, people didn't know better.  They didn't know that women could be born without hymens, or that a pregnant woman can have her hymen in tact.  And no, it is not rare.  I did not bleed my first time and I know of several other women who also did not.

Excellent talk my brother.Our movement is growing stronger and our awareness campaign is in full swing. The idea that a man will exercise enormous self-discipline to remain a virgin and find a woman who he thinks is also a virgin,only to find that the woman is impostor. . . .its an outrage!

These women must be dealt with severely in order to serve as deterrent.
How do these men prove their virginity?

You can't punish a woman for not having a hymen when it is NOT a definitive indicator of virginity.

Do you people enjoy living in darkness?  Educate yourselves!

Horseback riding. . . we won't fall for such old tricks.Any woman without her hymen intact,in the absence of a genuine medical certificate to prove 'good cause',is not worth taking to the altar.Simple

Nigerian Men For Intact-Hymen is launching a sensitization campaign to create awareness of this very important issue.I think involving the Police is a good way to deter these women.
It is impossible for a doctor to tell if a woman is a virgin or not. Please educate yourself before you decide to ruin the lives of innocent women.

While an intact hymen that bleeds when broken on a bride's wedding night has traditionally been regarded as proof of her virginity, this is a myth which has been disproven many times over in the twentieth century as the medical establishment has made it clear that:

1. Some girls are born without a hymen;

2. The hymen may tear naturally when a girl plays sports or engages in any physical activity;

3. The hymen is not always smooth but tends to be perforated and that the perforations may get bigger and cause the hymen to break once a girl menstruates;

4. The hymen can be broken by the use of tampons;

5. The hymen may be very small or very elastic so that no breakage occurs at all (some women even become pregnant while their hymens are still intact);

6. A hymen may not bleed when broken.
RomanceRe: French Wedding Annuled Over Bogus Virginity: Nigeria Next! by amberella: 10:30pm On May 30, 2008
Ok, I'll say it again.

It is very common for a virgin not to have her hymen in tact.  A woman's hymen is often broken before she has sex by regular day-to-day activities such as (previously mentioned) horseback riding.

Really? Even if she is a virgin? Even if she's never even kissed a man, seen a man naked or engaged in any sexual act whatsoever?
