Obiano said this when he received the students at EXCO Chambers, Government House, Awka. The students who were trained in Robotics and Coding technology in solving science technology, engineering and mathematics problems placed first in Nigeria for designing Fake Drug Fighting application. The competition, which was held in Abuja sometime in May, was organised by a United States -based Technovation, NGO. The six students, who are in Senior Secondary School 2 are Adaeze Onuigbo, Miracle Igboka, Nwabuaku Osai, Promise Nnalue, Jessica Osita and Vivian Okoye. The students, who were finalists in the 2018 Technovation, would travel to Silicon Valley, US, for the World Pitch Competition, including a week of networking, field trips and workshops. The competition will provide them opportunity to win between $5,000 and $15,000 in scholarships to pursue further studies in Science Technology, Engineering Education, STEM, field. “It will also sharpen their skills and improve their knowledge of applications.’’ Uchenna Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu, trainer and founder of Edufun Technik STEM Centre, said Robotic and Coding Technology simplifies the learning of sciences for secondary school children. Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu is the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellow and 2018 Barrack Obama African Leadership Fellow. She said that in January 2018, her agency in partnership with Technovation volunteered to teach some group of young girls the skills they needed to emerge as technology entrepreneurs and leaders. “We do this by inviting girls to identify a problem in their community, and then challenge them to solve it. “With our support and guidance, the girls worked in teams to build mobile app and business plan to lunch the app with the guide of Technovation curriculum. “We formed two teams of 10 girls who worked and worked toward building two mobile Apps.’’ She added: “the first team is known as Team Feed the Nation (Senior), and they produced iFOOD application, which helps the farmers to maximize their profit and ensure the safety consumption by consumers. “It also provides a platform for the farmers to deal directly with the consumers. This will help to curb the problem of hunger in our society as farmers will be able to make more profit through this application. “The second team, known as Team Save a Soul (Junior) produced FD-Detector (Fake Drug Detector), which helps to identify fake pharmaceutical drugs in Nigeria. “The Application leverages a drug’s barcode to verify its authenticity and expiration date. “After we submitted our Mobile Apps online to compete with the rest of the world, our two Mobile Apps were shortlisted for regional pitch in Abuja to compete with 36 other Teams/Mobile Apps,’’ she said. Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu, who noted that the girls were the only ones coming from the Eastern region, said that at the end of the regional competition in Abuja, the senior category took the 1st position while the junior category also placed 1st too. This qualified the Anambra Teams for semi-final, enabling them to compete with not less than 115 countries and about 1,500 mobile Apps. “The chances of emerging as finalist seems very odd because other countries seem to be more advanced in technology than these girls who for the first time are using the internet and opening an email account for the first time in their lives. “The determination in them and the passion to solve problems of fake drugs, kept their hopes alive; they knew it was a life time opportunity,’’ Onwuamaegbu-Ugwu said. For the girls, this is an opportunity to make Nigeria, their school and state proud as well as be opportune to visit the biggest technology industries in the world like Google, Facebook and IBM. They will also network with other students to learn more about what careers would be available in STEM for them. Two of the girls, Igboka Miracle and Promise Nnalue said the training exposed them to many opportunities to be connected to the world. They commended Obiano for embracing measures that would enhance proper learning and improving their productivity. Receiving them, Obiano who was elated at their performance announced a cash donation of N1 million to the teacher and N500, 000 each to the students. He also directed that robotics and coding teaching technology be replicated in other schools in the state. https://realnewsmagazine.net/education/world-pitch-competition-anambra-to-represent-nigeria-africa-in-us/ lalasticlala

NIWA concessions Onitsha River Port to 2 firms The Acting Managing Director, National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Danladi Ibrahim, on Monday disclosed that the Onitsha river port in Anambra State has been concessioned to two companies and that the port may commence operations before the end of 2018. Ibrahim said among the four existing river ports, two would be commissioned by the President before the end of the year. Though the MD declined to disclose the names of the concessionaire for the river port project because the award letters are yet to be issued to the operators of the facility, the NIWA boss noted that the concession agreement will last for a period of 25 years. According to him, “The concession has been completed, we open the financial bid on the 3rd of July and we have picked the most competitive concessionaires and any moment from now they will take over. The NIWA boss said that skeletal operations is ongoing at the facility hence the concessionaires will take over the facility to commence full blown operations soon Speaking on Baro port, Ibrahim assured that the road linking Abuja will be taken care of by relevant agencies, adding that the facility has been completed by 75% as the cargo handling equipment designated for the project are being installed by a German firm. Ibrahim explained further that the dredging and concession of the two ports were awarded at the same period noting that vessel cannot load consignment when dredging is ongoing. He added that “Government maximize the use of the resources of 12 major rivers in the country. The lower River Niger was not left out, as capital dredging from Warri to Baro, covering a distance of 572km, has been concluded. “It is apt to mention that NIWA ‘s achievement under Ameachi ‘s watch have become so enormous, mindful that it was within the present administration that the Baro river port reached 95% completion level, as government aims to provide cargo handling equipment and turn the basin into a river port. “Already, work is on going to enable barges discharge their goods effectively is going on at Baro port. Also the cargo handling equipment for the Baro River Port are on going. “It is our hope to see the full concession of the Onitsha River Port before the end of the year, completion of the Lokoja river port and supply of cargo handling equipment at Baro river port. “We believe this will complement activities at the Lokoja river port and create multiple benefits with attendant multiplier effects on the economy, particularly in promoting multi modal transport and cheaper coastal service across 28 states of the federation. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/07/niwa-concessions-onitsha-river-port-to-2-firms/amp/

Our correspondent on another mission at the tax office was there when Obi entered with his Media Adviser, Mr. Valentine Obienyem. Confirming the visit at the tax office amidst heavy down pour at 10 am, Obi said he was summoned to appear before the tax office at 10: 00 am hence he had to ran from Lagos to Onitsha to meet up the appointment. When probed on his feelings on the invitation, Obi said “Nothing to worry. As a citizen, I can visit any office in the country, including those in my state when I have issues to sort out." He even commended the conduct of the chief Tax officer who he said was polite and did her duties professionally. Further, Obi said he was asked to show his six years tax clearance which this newspaper sighted the receipts totaling N205 Million. ‘’I am happy the professional way Juliet conducted herself. It was a first class conduct and this is the kind of person that every International organization should hire. I am sure she was not anticipating that I will answer her summon. But as a good citizen who knows the importance of taxation for government to operate, I honoured her summon. ‘’I wish other people could be like her in attending to clients and tax payers the professional way she attended to me." On the issue of tax evasion, former Anambra Governor, Obi appealed to citizens to pay their taxes regularly, lamenting that those evading tax are shortchanging the people and government because government can only do great work for the masses when citizens pay taxes. He however appealed to government to ensure smaller businesses are not crippled by tax as over burdening of smaller busines
