SportsThe First Set Of Golden Eaglets To Be Rewarded After 25 Years. by AndreUweh(op): 8:21pm On Aug 24, 2010
Nigeria's Golden Eaglets set for just reward
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/8919388.stm
By Oluwashina Okeleji
BBC Sport, Lagos

Ugbade was the captain of Nigeria's under-16 World Cup-winning team
Nigeria's Golden Eaglets will get their reward for winning the maiden under-16 World Cup, after a 25-year wait.
Each player was promised a house, stock in the central bank and a scholarship among other incentives for bringing glory to the continent in 1985.
However, the Nigerian government never fulfilled their pledges.
After waiting in vain, the team captain Nduka Ugbade took their plight to a public hearing at the Nigerian parliament.
Ugbade was in tears as he openly questioned the expectations of the government from athletes when efforts of past heroes are never appreciated or rewarded.
The Director General of the Nigeria Sports Commission, Patrick Ekeji, apologised to the players and promised to pursue their reward.
"I don't have enough details of China 1985 and I want you to supply every detail of promises made to you, we will begin the process of helping you get your benefits," Ekeji said.
"The government appreciates its past heroes [so] I will do all I can to ensure all the players get what they were promised by the government.
"It is really sad because this should have been done a long time ago but hopefully we can right the wrongs by finally fixing it now."
The school boys from Nigeria conquered the world in China in 1985 by beating then West Germany 2-0 in an epic final in Beijing.
The players received a rousing welcome on their return home.
The military leader at the time, Mohammed Buhari promised them national honours, houses, streets named after each member, stock at the central bank, educational scholarships, visits to all the states of the federation and the Mexico 1986 World Cup.
"We did not even get our bonuses from the World Cup while the scholarship was stopped when the government did not pay," Ugbade told BBC Sport.
"Only a company [Thomas Cook] fulfilled the Mexico 1986 trip pledge while one of the players Kingsley Aikhionbore waited in vain until he died.
"Luckily, the honourable members of the house committee on sports heard me out.
"Hopefully, we can finally get it because the man Patrick Ekeji is sincere in his quest to sort it out for us."
Even though Nigeria has since achieved further success at the Fifa under-17 World Cup in 1993 and 2007, the success of the 1985 Golden Eaglets remains a major milestone in the country.

I will never partcipate in the childish Igbo v Yoruba insults being thrown around on this forum but i will say a word or two on the Aba i had the opportunity to visit for the first time two weeks ago for four days to conduct a trainning course. I reside during the week in Ikeja Lagos and the weekends in my place at Ibadan, i have always believed that Ibadan is dirty and believe me it is dirty but the bleaching governor seems to be waking up finally (maybe because of the coming elections) and he his taking the sanitation of the city seriously now, albeit slowly. However, my visit to Aba changed my opinion about Ibadan if you thought Ibadan was dirty, Aba takes the biscuit!!! how people can reside in that place beggars belief, the stench that permanently hangs in the air, the reprehensible refuse dumps all over the town, people defeacating in open refuse dumps in broad daylight and i am talking of adults male and female, the extremely horrible state of the roads in the commercial city, gosh!!! i had to curse the governor of that state and his predecessors for ignoring what should be the industrial nerve centre of Nigeria and possibly West-Africa. I pray the indigenes of Aba will take their town back and turn it around, Aba deserves a lot better than what is currently on offer if anything at all is on offer from what i saw; the criminal neglect of Aba is a crying shame on the entire eastern region and with the industriousness of the Aba people, it should not be too difficult to turn it into the Bangalore of Nigeria. Gosh!!! Aba is dirty, very dirty but it has no reason to remain so.
And yes i am not Ibo but the truth still has to be told without the fear of being labeled a tribalist.
What a load of rubbish. I think you are a potential tribalist. Nonsense.

The authentic boundary between Ndigbo and non Igbo people in Rivers state is:Ahoada-Port Harcourt-Omuma lines. Any group south of this line is non Igbo. I have read some articles where some Ijaws have been claiming Igbo groups of Ikwerre, Egbema and Ndoki as their group. This sort of idiotic aggression must stop.

The problem with Nigerians is that any criticism no matter how valid will be immediately cast aside as bad belle.

Personally I see Pete Edochie's point. Nigerians are not the only consumers of Nollywood productions, its important to accurately represent cultures on film. I do not think this means that Olu Jacobs stop being considered for these roles, but rather that he as an actor spend the time to learn about the character he's about to play. Which also include properly pronouncing Igbo words (Van Vicker please take note) and learning the nuances of non-Yoruba culture.
well said.

What I think the Ndigbo should do is vote for the right, most credible person on the ballot! I think Ndigbo (like the tribalists we encounter on here everyday) should do away with sentiments. Why would you say "Oh, man, we voting for IBB just to piss the Ijaws off cause of Adaki Boro"? Or, ". . . the Yorubas are traitors, and even though we know this Yoruba Presidential aspirant is more credible we wont vote for him just to spite the whole Yorubas"?. With such statements and outlook in life its no surprise that the rest of Nigeria views Ndigbo with, not just suspicion, but also as a group intent on impeding the progress of the country.

Instead of thinking what will "help" the Ibos, why cant you think of what will help your whole country? Thats what honestly confuses me about not just the Ndigbo, but also, the whole of Nigeria!
Nigerians do not vote for credible candidates. check out between Obasanjo and Ekwueme and later Obasanjo vs Olu Falae. Shagari vs Zik and Awo. Shagari was not more credible than the other two, yet he won. And so on.
Voting for a credible candidate is a MIRAGE.

In last 72 hours, I did a research on all the posts on this politics section. We all know how useful a research can be, and based on my research and team, here are my results on IBB and the IGBOs.

54% of all the post made in nairaland in last 24 hours were about the Igbo( 6 out of every 10 posts)
37% of all posts in the last 24 hours were in reply to IBB's related threads (4 out of every 10 posts)
88% of all Igbo related posts are against the Igbo(presidency, tribe and people), therefore 9 out of every 10 posts.
43% of all IBB's related posts supports IBB 2011

Jonathan's research results and analysis will be updated later.

I hope this helps.
Prof White or whatever silly name you call your self. Why must Ndigbo be the casestudy of your useless research?. It seems every slowpoke that joins Nairaland will come up with one Igbo this or that. What sort of medications do you take?.

On a very serious note, Okrika people are not Igbo, but KALABARI. There might have been Igbo blood in them but they are not Igbo neither is their first language and names Igbo.
@Ibime, do not be offended with some posts here. Some people feel there is the need for Igbo and Okrika to see each other as one irrespective of ethnic nationalities.

You cant just group every body east of the river's language as Igbo and your own ukwuani. It makes no sense and it is idiotic. Saying that ukwuani is similar to Igbo suggest that all the "Igbo"language, tones, and words are the same and not one word is spoken by one group of "Igbo" that the other group cant understand, that is a laughable lie. And since that is the case if you group all the people east of the river as Igbo than you might as well include yourself because with what i just explained it makes you no different from the rest of the "Igbo" groups. So with that said, with your bias comment, you've just proved that you are Igbo.
Well said.

Andre, I'm not sure that the Yoruba comparison makes much of a difference, in this case, and besides, the "similar and not the same" argument is rather legitimate. So I don't understand how you can really honestly say that their exhibiting stupidity, by stating such.
Nenye, I lived in Ibadan and do understand Yoruba to some extent, but not Owoh. While at Ibadan, one of my closest friends, from Owoh will require an interpreter to communicate with his grandma from Owoh.
Would I at this time insanely claim that Owoh is not Yoruba but similar. Have you ever seen any one making such claims. But once it is Igbo, ignorants will quickly jump to a conclusion that one dialect of Igbo or the other is not Igbo but similar.
You have been on nairaland for ages, and if I may ask, how many times do you see anyone claiming: Ekiti is not Yoruba, Ijebu is not Yoruba, Owoh is not Yoruba but similar. For how long must you continue to support literate illiterates who enjoys claiming that one Igbo dialect or the other is not Igbo.

The above post is rubbish. Why not say Owoh and Yoruba are similar and not the same. Also, why not say Offa and Yoruba are not the same but similar. You hardly see iidiots making this type of argument. When it comes to the Igbo, people tend to display their stupidy by claiming; Ukwuani is not Igbo but similar, Okigwe is not Igbo but similar etc. Why can't drop-outs in Nairaland know that in Igboland just like in Yorubaland, there are so many dialectical variations.

Let me thank all the Igbo chaps and Igbo/Ijo for their wide and intelligent contribution to the extent of Alaigbo. Igbo land stretches from Abeomega to Igwe Ocha (Port Harcourt) and Igwe Nga (Opobo). Also, from Igbineke and Agbor to Gakem and Ikom

@Onlytruth

Nnewi can not be compared to Aba Urban talk less Ngwa land. Even baring Ukwa, Ngwa land is comparable to anything from Onitsha to Ihiala.

@Abagworo

Ariaria Market is seated in the former Obioma Ngwa LGA and never bordered by Eberi. Eberi Omuma is bordered by Ogwe, Owaza, Ihie and Obegu.

I also do not totally agree with you about people who deny their ancestry. Nigeria is teetering toward the area of greater disorder and it is proper that folks identify themselves properly to avoid unnecessary waste of lives and energy. I remembered when people of Akiriaka, near Ohanku in Ndoki, wanted to join their kinsmen in the then Imo State, now Abia State which led to community riot between Akrirka and Annang. I know what led the people of Annang to sue for peace; it was not the strength of small Akirika people but the mobilaztion of youths from all Igbo land especially form Ukwa, Ngwa and others.

@Ibime

You must understand that word, Bonny, is neither Igbo nor Ijo but a bastardized English word for Ubani. Ubani was outpost for Ngwa people before arrival of Europeans with the “Boat People”.

The history of Opobo is a mixed basket. Opobo was found by Jaja of Opobo on a piece of land believed to have belonged to Igwe Nga and Ikot Abak (Abasi). However, I must say Ichie Obomanu has reiterated his being Igbo on several occasions and he is also a member of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo. Chief Emma Aguma is Igbo of Ikwerre and one of the founding fathers of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo. There are also Okirika people who claim Igbo and few claims Igbo/Ijo yet some claim Ijo.

@Andre Uweh

You are always on the spot with correct facts and there is no form of wavering from you.
MAY YOUR DAYS BE LONG.
