In Igbo traditional rituals and ceremonies, the gworo is not a valid matter. Only the Igbo kola nut is acceptable.

Gworo Oji awusa like you call it is frowned upon in my dad's village and surrounding villages/communities.
Not sure of the reason though.

I also understand that if you fail to offer kolanut to your visitor he is well within his rights to complain that you failed to welcome him to your home.

The christian girl should have gone to the U.I zoo for that crusade. May be she could have evangelised the lions in the U.I zoo as one so called 'Daniel' failed in his efforts to do so in the early 1900's.

This great nut is fairly grown in Igboland but, abundantly in Yorubaland. Extract from the kola nut can also be used for dying clothes and production of alcohol. In Nigeria however, the Igboman's creator showed him that without this nut, all their ceremonial activities would be fake. For this reason, the Hausas chew the kola nut ordinarily, grown by the Yorubas, while Ndigbo celebrates with the nut.

Igbo kola nut (oji Igbo) and gworo (oji awusa) are both used in Igboland. Oji awusa is always two pieces in one. In this case, it is usually cut vertically. After being vertically cut, you can also cut edge way to reach other members. Oji Igbo is always naturally vertical itself. It can be cut edge way also in other to reach many people.
If you are not offered kola nut in Okigwe south areas and in Igboland, you are not welcomed. Greatest ceremonies performed by Igbo man any where in the world must first begin with kola nut breaking.

Kola nut tree is singularly a wonderful made tree by God. Subsequently, the ancient men in Igboland discovered the God's symbol in this nut, which brought about ritual activities. These primeval men searched and saw that there was no other tree or nut in comparism to kola nut and its tree.
Kola nut rituals varies from one town to another in Igboland, so let's share your knowledge of kola nut in your community or in Igboland at large.

Zoning: Igbo group disowns leaders on pact with North
From CHIDI NNADI, Enugu
Saturday, August 14, 2010

An Igbo group, Nd’Igbo Lagos, has said that the Igbo have not entered into any agreement with the North on the vexed issue of zoning of the presidency. The group was reacting to media reports on Wednesday which claimed that South East leaders and the North had met to endorse zoning, saying that it was a misplaced statement.

“The so-called South East leaders are by no means speaking for Ndigbo or any section of the South East. We view the report with skepticism and distance ourselves from any such agreement. At no time and at no place has Nd’Igbo or the South East people gathered to agree on selves and their various political ambitions, but not for or on behalf of Nd’Igbo and the South East.

“We are not ignorant of the various political plots and sub-plots going on now on the eve of the upcoming elections. Nd’Igbo are very much aware of what our interests are and what manner of approach to take towards its realization. But to initiate, engage and enter into any agreement with the North or any other section of the country without due consultation across board is unacceptable.

“We also for the avoidance of any doubt and for the records state that, Ohanaeze Nd’Igbo, is the mouthpiece of Nd’Igbo and at no time have they mandated any group, groups or persons to enter into any political negotiations on our behalf. Immediate political gains and expediency have long ceased to be the motivating and driving force behind Igbo political thinking and we do not intend to go back on that,” the group said.
They noted that mutual political survival, infrastructural development, a federal Nigeria devoid of the various trappings of mismanagement, corruption, tribalism and ethnicity, is the fulcrum of the Igbo socio-political thinking and cannot be served any better by such corner-cutting politicking as exhibited by the so-called “South East” political leaders.
“We call on Nd’Igbo and other Nigerians to ignore these so-called alliances, which are nothing but distractions and which serve no interest both for our Igbo corporate interest and the general well-being of the nation. Our fate and future lie in our hands and not with the North as many self-serving politicians are making us to believe.”

It is an outright stupidity to include Obigbo (Oyigbo) in the proposed state that will never be. Obigbo will rather remain in Rivers State with her Igbo kins such as Ikwerre's Ndonis, Ekpeyes etc.
Alternatively, Obigbo can be carved into Abia state where it once belonged to. Ndigbo will never support any attempt to make Obigbo people minorities in a non Igbo state.

Which one is Ogbo-Igbo? And yes, Igbo women are the most educated in Nigeria.
I think Ogbo people are Abiriba, Abam and Ohafia people. Ogbo or Ogbonna is a common name found in every family out there, hence the name Ndi Ogbo. Am I right Abagworo?.

Development of P.H started in 1913 and by 1915 the railway line from Port Harcourt had reached the Enugu coalfields. With this, Port Harcourt started on its career of rapid growth-thanks to the railway line and the harbour. Enugu, on its side, started as a mining camp and owed its growth to this fact.
CultureRe: The Whiteman And Emergence Of New Societies In Igboland. by AndreUweh(op): 8:51pm On Aug 12, 2010
Port Harcourt and Enugu did not start as administrative centres. About 1908, coal was discovered at Enugu thus raising the question of how mined coal could be evacuated by sea. Attention turned first to Calabar, but this view was suppressed in view of the obvious difficulties of linking Calabar with Enugu by rail. The search for an alternative led to the founding of Port Harcourt.

We're saying the same thing then, although there are other towns on the Niger like Aboh and some other small villages. I think apart from it's location, the city also grew because of the immigrants that came from different parts of the larger region, like the Igala, who made the place a major intersection, which the river makes even more perfect. I think I believe the story of Igbo migrants being expelled from Benin city and I believe many of these people were highly skilled, a Benin man cannot be called Eze Chime, I don't buy it. . . . . .

To go back to the issue of Igbo cities, I think with the way Igbo villages are laid out, with many paths filled with what seems like a never ending chain of houses, there really wasn't any need for cities, or maybe this is an excuse for not developing one, I don't know, but the Igbo villages were more like sections of a larger, maybe what you could even call a 'county', a good example is all the villages that make up Orlu, not all these communities were made up of (closely) related families, so they cannot be called a 'clan'.
@Ezeagu, great post from you Sir.

Those market towns weren't on major trading routes like that of Aba that leads to Ubani, there's a reason the British focused on towns like these when they built the railway. Onicha was created by migrants who settled in one place and many of these people were skilled traders and so on, or at least that's what some are saying.
It is a truism that as a result of Benin expansion under Ewuare, Igbo communities were affect ted and this led to movements that resulted in establishment of some towns. Onitsha was not only affected but Igbo communities west of the Niger were equally affected, yet can not be compared to Onitsha today.
Similarly, The Aro settled in so many parts of Eastern Nigeria yet , they did create large urban centres.
My point is, immigration is not necessarily responsible for the growth of Onitsha but because of strategic location on the Niger River.

Iwa ji has become celebration and equally a yearly event that has come to stay. Culture is dynamic and not like political gimmick. New yam festival is a big cultural event in Igboland and time to thank God for bumper harvest in yam and other farm varieties. In Igboland, men plant yam while women plant cassava and cocoa-yam etc. Man is the head of the family and also, yam is the head of everything in the farm in Igboland.

I think I meant more of Awka than Nnewi, Awka seems to have been a busy place in the past, maybe it was more of villages that were very interconnected than actual town or city, the same can be said for a lot of communities of old and even now. As for Onicha I think the British industrialized it more than urbanised it, Onicha doesn't seem to be place that was created out of villages like many of the current Igbo cities are, rather it grew as a town, probably as an affiliate of Idu (Benin Empire).

Other cities like Aba and Owerre were actually large markets before the British took over and the markets were major points in the trading routes of the region. The only two cities created out of almost nothing through British administration is Enugu and Port Harcourt.
The urbanisation of Onicha can be attributed to its location on the Niger River. The expansion of Bini empire affected other Igbo communities such as Ogwashi Ukwu, Onicha Olona etc, yet they did not develop to great urban centres.
Also, there were so many market centres all over Igboland such as Nkwo Ntiha, Afor-Ogbe, Eke Elelenwa, Orie-agu, Ekeikpa, Eke Umulogho, Orie-Umuihi, Nkwo-Ihitte, Eke Umuawuchi etc. Yet they did not develop like Aba, Owerri, Umuahia etc.
