I am surprised a lot of people here are surprised Zimbabwe has tracked APC and IFV. I mean they are listed to operate them.

All you guys saying why does south africa not step in to Zimbabwe forget one thing. Is it in South Africa's interest to do that.

The downside with this manoeuvre is that the Leo can't come up the hill (or go down) again until friendlies clear the whole valley because on its second appearance it will be smoked.

Noticed how soldiers were in open trenches, no artillery or mortar or snipers from the opponents?
Not really. It would not be the only tank, the next tank to pop up over would be a different tank.

There where no openet it just training. But Finland would not build massive forts I mean there entire army is built to fight Russia.

O here are some numbers.

Finland population is 5.5 million, they have 26000 in the defence force, 250 000 in the active reserve 750 000 in reserve and another 1 million trained. So in war 2/5 there population is ready to fight. Now that's a country that takes defence seriously.

Their protection level probably starts at IIIA and then IV. A level IV body armor will surely stop a III right? So I guess nothing much, not like the capability is being lacked.
IV can be rather big or one use in some case. III is a good middle ground

Why is there no lever IIIA?
auto correct was on my phone. Why No III, level IIIA is for high end pistols and IV is amor piercing rifel level. III is the most common for mill purpose since it is Assault rifle level.
Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by andrewza: 6:19pm On Nov 08, 2017
Why no level III armor. I mean IIIA. I mean that the level most countries operate at?

Because its in the dry bush-veldt - a flame thrower would set everything on fire and your entire battle-feild would turn into a raging inferno, which would end up being a major headache for BLUFOR as well as OPFOR.
That was the one issue, other issue is it would just burn a small patch killing g less than if a bomb was used and not stopping people going around it. It a great tool for jungle warfare not for Bush or desert warfare.

Flame throwers are illegal.

Russians get around it because TOS systems and Shmel RPG's are thermabolic, which is not expressly prohibited.

I question the effectiveness of TOS because after brief appearances on the field in Iraq and Syria (both of whom actually own them) they very quickly disappeared from the front - while the classic MRLS with HE warheads remain ubiquitous.

Shmel is obviously a nifty niche weapon - Engineers getting rid of pesky bunkers. But as a niche weapon, I dont see a place for it in Africa.

Here, the worlds most exhausted Russian demonstrates the Shmel for us

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nKIJChgFvs
Flame throwers are not illegal that myth stems from a poor under standing of the laws of armed conflict. In short you can't use them in populated civilian areas. Flame throws are bested suited in close combat and most close combat is in built up civilian areas. But they very much legal and in use with a few contries like China.

The TOS are in few numbers so they probably cost a lot to use. Combined with limited range and you see why they not used often. They mean to basically blast a area before it is attacked.

All so the SMAW system all so fires a thermobaric round, along with the RPG 7 and other launchers.

Exactly what was the problem, considering Frantam performed well?
Poorly suited to African warfare and other options like red phosphorus.

Napalm,anyone?

Idk why we don't use this primo area weapon? Not as a flame thrower-too heavy and unwieldy! We use cluster bombs and ordinary dumb bombs in Africa apart from the Rhodies who had their own version called Frantam, which was thickened petroleum jelly mixed with aluminum flakes. The latest version ,Napalm B,shown here in the treeline, burns hotter and longer.

https://www.thebalance.com/napalm-still-used-as-a-weapon-3345094

Haiyya! It seems Naij used it against the Ibos!

I hear Russia has a version that melts brick!?
SA tested in back in the border war and droped it, was not as effective in the African bush

What happened to the litte-guyes on the buffel chassis?
the LML is meant to be static or mounted to a vehicle. 1 day could have a feild work shop ,mount them on a toyata, casspir what ever.

the 20mm aa guns where phased out and replaced by the zsu23-2

Wait, you guys make the Tavor?
Nigeria uses a a lot of wepaons from AK, FN, Tavour, extra extra. Made in a lot of countries. The fire arms made in Nigeria are AK style, FAL copies, G3 copies, BM 59 copies, for rifels, the all so make a M12 SMG copy and a HI POWER for a pistol. they all so make FN mag and RPG,s. Though to be honest i wonder how much they make of each. I suspect they focus on the AK,s and the rest as needed. Either way Nigeria is finaly able to make domestic small arms.

They are two separate harbors

Yellow - civilian
Red- military

The only SANDF or SAN vessel normally moored outside the military zone is the SAS Protea, our hydro-graphic vessel
Some civlian ships use the naval dock yard. These include Fish trawlers, Tugs, cargo ships, supply ships, research ships, private boats, extra. Though the number is low and the ships are handled by the SAN. And there is a lot of paperwork that is needed.

all so to the right of the yellow zone there is a second smaller area where the NAVY keeps small craft.

There has to be some safe distance between civvies boats and your navy's prized possession.

As a safety measure.

Civil-Military relationships can easily deteriorate,
Why? I mean we oen the ships to guided tours when in civilian ports. If the port is not safe we dont use use it or we make it safe.

35mm Oelikon 102 GDF-002 + 48 modified GDF-005 units - being upgraded to Skysheild (project should be finished)
8 starstreak MANPADS + Thales Page continuous-wave (CW) low-observable battery air defence local warning radars
4 ESR220 Thutlwa radar
14 Thales Squire radar system (not sure if they are intergrated)

and... ~30 ZU-23-2 mounted on a SAMIL 100 truck (I think those may have been sold to Nigeria), some have armored cabins.

As you can see, strategic Air-Defence has never been a real imperative for the SANDF - even GBADS seems focused on building tactical capablities (defending a specific key position)
The * srarstreaks menstioned are not manpands but triple launcher LML systems. Actualy Manpad versions are not the same.

The ZSU-23-2 where not sold they still very much in use in SA though they where briifly removed, used by the Special forces and removed again they back with ADA to provide a mobile AA gun sytem. As far as i know all in serves have armored Mine proofed cabs

Not a good idea during conflict. Terrorists frogmen can attach a bomb at the hull at night.
SA not at conflict and we have different actions we do depending on threat level.

why do your MOD allow civvies to Moor their boats alongside your frigate. don't you guys have like a military section at the port?
We have 2 naval bases and a few stations but there is no miltray section at civilian harbor unless we clear the Area for a purpose.

The two actual members of the SANDF never insulted the nation. Simply pointed out they where not following good convoy practices.

Explain if you can
Going prone is laying flat down. All his gear is on his chest. So one he is higher than he should be and two while prone he can't access a lot of his gear.

Notice there how a lot of gear is pushed to the side, you can now get lower, leopard crawl better with less risk to equipment Andover all it just a better placed.

You obviously don't know better than the convoy commanders. Those are American convoys. Take your complain to them and not me.
So Americans are perfect, they don't Bleep up. I mean no American Patriot as shot down a British air craft, no American ship as run aground, no American forces have conducted bad practices and not convoyed properly.

it looks like this south africa army drivers were not very attentive during spacing class lesson, makende hizi
Notice how there was only one vic in each accident and not a pile up? Cars have accidents it a fact, your truck going down hill with a tank could have the brakes fail and you in your inexperience due to you being new you skip a gear. Now spacing is what let's you manouver.

O I can show plenty of pics of crashed and over turned tanks and trucks from a cross the world.

After reading the above, 1st question that came to me was "why is their convoy spacing so poor"?
Yeah 50m spacing for vics and on a flt open road like that 100m spacing would work
