Henry120: My friend keep quite and stop running around nairaland peddling lies. Who told you the R-5 is better than the AK-47/74/AKM which the nigerian army use. The AK is still amongst the world best assult rifle, when an enemy gets hit by an AK round, he stays down unlike the M-4 round.

The R-5 is a hand me down, cheap copy of the Israeli galil. The Israeli galil rifle which is made based on the design of the ak-47. If nigeria wanted to we could have made another cheap copy, but unlike you south africans we choose to go the honourable part. We make the AK-47/74/AKM under licence right here in nigeria.

Tactical weapons, weapons for special forces are widely used in nigeria, the best modern rifles. The TAVOR-21(macro) is used by the navy, army and airforce special forces.
The SSS/DSS & NIA( secret service) use TAVOR-21, FN F200, FN P-90 and the new isreali UZI PR0(PDW)

The police anti-terror team and VIP protection team use a brand new AK rifle, all black( I can't remember the name)

Modern tactical rifles and snipers are widely used in nigeria, however the main infantry rifle is the ak-47/ 74 / AKM, the world's dependable rifle. There is no need for us to get sub standard south african R-5 rifle. So keep these your photos in your dustbin in durban.
You never held a Galil or R4. Yes they based on a finish rifel itch was a AK47 copy but it was not cheap far from it. The parts vare better made and tought out. The rear sites are set farth back increasing accurac. The cocking handle and select lever's are both left and right hand frendly. So it has the same AK ruggendness but better accuracy and will fail less due to better parts.

Our SF use what ever they want to use.

What was showen in those pics where the new versions of the R serries rifel. The a new beast all together. And a pic of the NTW 20.
I see some SA have just come in to confirm their lack of intelligence. Nigeria Army is fit for purpose. It is strong. It is capable and it cann only get better.
SA army is a dormant, gloated force. War is not won by your Arsenal. It is won by the gallant men and women who have self discipline. Who face battles to win it. That is what we have in Nigeria, and that is more than any of these over-sophisticated toys. Give a Nigerian soldier a kalashnikov and leave the rest. You guys seem to forget that no war is won from air. When it comes to ground troops, I doubt if your SA soldiers will not hide and cower on hearing the sounds of war. Wise up brothers.
Dormant. We got all most has many solders deployed now has what we had during the Border war. We have many war games all thrue the year. We deployed solders in CAR in days after the request came from there presdent. And please domt insult our bravery it shows your low level of integents.

And Air dose help in wining wars. It helps a lot.

Henry120: Why won't the last one be spot on for you south africans. Acknowledgement, however is not weakness. Nigeria has a very capable and strong military and we are a by far more than a match for any country on this continent. The troops are well trained and adequately kitted and equipped to do they job. It is true that both south africa and egypt have more modern equipments than nigeria, but it does not mean that we are in any way poorly equipped to carry out a mission.
It a few points in the first pargragh. I won't come out and say they wrong but they not the complet truth. Before indepence any Nigerian Army would be a britsh Army with Nigerian solders. Not saying they did not do a good job. But they where more a branch of the Brits so they get some of the credit.

And a lot of the enemys mentioned where not nearly has strong has the rebel in Malil so are a poor comparsion.
PoliticsRe: Nigerian Troops Ill-equipped For War In Mali! by andrewza: 8:55am On Jan 23, 2013
ocelot2006: Yet the very same Army has won virtually most (if not all) of its military engagements from WW1 to the present day. Doubt that? Ask the Germans about Eastern Africa, the Italians about Northern Africa, the Japanese about the Burma (the only regiment good enough to fight alongside the famous Chindits), the Biafrans in our sad civil war, the Camerounians in Bakassi, the NPLF in Liberia, the RUF in Sierre Leone, Egbesu boys/MEND/cultists/other militant groups in the Niger-delta, and yes Boko Haram in North-Eastern Nigeria.

Now I'm a realist, and I know the military is equally plagued with the same issues we face as a nation. And you won't see me say we can take on militaries like the Egyptians and the SADF as we're yet to catch up with them technology-wise. But love it or hate, the Nigerian Armed Forces is a pretty decent and squared off military that has proven itself in the past and present, and is a force to be reckoned with in Africa.
I don't agree with every point you make but that last one is spot on. Nigeria has a very caperbil milltary and they are more than a match for any other west african nation.

caesaraba: You should go through your posts and see who's been sentimental. All you've done is try to paint Nigerian military capabilities in bad light. Trying to use subtle words while being utterly antagonistic in your criticisms? Try harder. you've done quite a poor job at masking your loathing for the Nigerian military. (Some soldier you must be huh)

And please don't talk about illiteracy and education. Ah! You should try educating your largely illiterate black population in your country (and don't forget to teach them about the dangers of rape, HIV and violent crime too).

You should stick to soldiering rather than engaging in petty bashing across vast borders. Surely, you can do better than that.
^^^ You, sir, are not very analytical in your assessment. Maybe because your country SA has not really been involved in ground operations. Intelligent military analysts will tell you that no battle is won from air. In fact, air attacks are mainly to distabilise and demoralise the opposition. Nigeria has one of the best ground troops in the world, even with us still using the kalashnikov as our flagship rifle.
You have very little knowledge of Nigerian military, you only gloat on what you see on google. You came here to market your country's silly tanks, which cannot withstand most terrain. You also agreed that your country military has been relatively quiet. Nigerian army has been very active, collecting plenty front line experience for the past 3 decades. Experience you cannot buy in the market.
On this note, I urge you to stop bashing Nigeria.
'I do not know you. I do not know who you are or what you want. If it is money you want, I do not have. What I have is a set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a period of time. Skills that make me a nightmare to people like you. If you stop bashing Nigeria, I will not bother you. If you do not stop, I will hunt you, I will find you and I will give you a bear hug'
You have zero knowleg on SA miltary past or present. We fought the largest battel in african history since WW2 against a enemy who out numberd us in both the air and ground. And where able to bring them to a hault with only minor losses. We have around 3000 solders deployed right now. We where able to deply with out any out side help 400 solders from SA to CAR at a drop of a hat.

Control of the Air let you strike at enemy comand and control sytems. It gives a edge in intelgebs and recon let's you destro infustructer at any time. You correct Air dose not win wars. But it sure makes it easy.

Silly tank. The G6 is a SPG the best SPG in the world.

No SADC is peac fully. SANDF is very active with border patrols Peace keeping missions and Anti Piracy ops. We have all so had a few emergancy call ups through the years.

If you want to go back 30 years we where fight a major war against a enemy that out numberd us and a lot of times out gunned us yet we where wining every battel. Look up the South African Border war.

Please don't threaten us. We find it makes you look like a fool and ruines any thing you say.

snydergp: SA only started to take part in AU and UN peace missions in the later parts of the 1990's due to the its intergration of all its former armed groups and "homeland" defence units into the new SANDF from its apartheid regimes SADF.

SADC is relatively peacefull and don't face the same crisis like West and Central african nations has in the past 20 years of civil wars and military coups.

Zimbabwe with all its problems had no rebbellion or civil war issues. I don't know why SA should intervene in political crisis of a sovereign states unless there's geniocide or Zim threatens SA's stability.

Angola and SA shares a not so good history due to SA's previous military incursions into Angola since 1970-1989 including SA's former colony Namibia. It would have been politically unwise for SA to have sent its troops to Angola including suicidel for such a move because the memories of Apartheid regimes brutality is still in Angolan peoples minds, so that's a non-starter.

SA has over 1200 soldiers in DRC, 800 in Sudan, 700-800 still in Burundi and over 400 in CAR.

There are to many threads on this war. Why have your mods not tried to merg them togerther in to one thread.

Any case the report is high on crak or somthing. The NA is the best milltary in the region. There is no deyning that. And there is no way it will end up being a second line force.

HNosegbe: @Blyss, apparently we have different definitions of what amounts to a victory. A victory, in my book, is a succession of decisive military victories which involve routing an enemy and taking casualties.

Military objectives don't stay static in the course of a war, they change as determined by circumstances.

With the way you described both wars, I would call the War of 1812 the military equivalent of a 1-1 draw, while the Korean War could be seen as a goalless one. My view though.
Your may have your view but it is wrong.

Blyss: Revolutionary War
War of 1812
Mexican-American war
Civil War
Spanish-American war
WW1
WW2
Korean War
Gulf War 1
Gulf war 2
Afghanistan war

These were all conventional wars in which the US took engaged in victoriously. Vietnam is often titled as Tie, but I say it was a lose. Panama wasn't really a conventional fight, it was more on par with what the Nigerian forces did in Liberia and Sierra Leon.
I did not count any thing pre 1970s. The advance in warfare was to great.

And the war of 1812. Was that not when Canada (well it was britsh canda) invaded you. Just saying according to history Canada is one of the only 3 countreis to invade home land amrica(mexio on brits being the second.

vislabraye: Its true. The US can't try Nigeria in conventional war. Firstly, they don't understand our terrain. Our climate won't favour them.
The strenght of the military depends a lot on eqipments.
Iraq thoght the same thing and they where a lot stronger than Nigeria. If you said in a un covetnionl war you would be able to talk with truth.

vislabraye: Has there ever been war in the US soil? But can you try their soldiers?
The USA has fought a number of high inteserty wars before. The last one was the invasion of Iraq that then becam a coin opertion. During the first gulf war where the wiped out the Miltary of Iraq. Then there was vietnam. A war that was both coin and a high intesty war against the NVA (the Amrican never lost a major battel against the communasts there) so they have experiance in it.

They ranked countries based on their known military strenght, personal and equipment.

But lo and behold, numbers do not mean anything in war.
Global secuirty ranking is even worse than you say. It mentuons equiment numbers but not what equment. 100 let's say modified T72s is far better than 200 old T55s. It mentions number of solders but not there level of training what equment. I would rather have 10 good solders with good equment(not even the best just good) than 50 or even a 100 untraind AK weilding kids.
