Please advice on how to go about my UK application, i was in the us for two years but due to recession my Sevis go terminated, but i didn't leave the US on time to regularize my papers so i was denied reentry when i came home. it was brought to my attention that my refuser from my US embassy would affect my UK Application.
The uk tries to ascertain a few things, amongst which include:

1) they want to know that you will not resort to public funds. How can you make them believe that you won’t recourse to public funds when recession affected your education in the US. How do you convince them that that same recession won’t affect you again?

2) they want to know that you will leave when you’re meant to leave the UK. How can you make them believe that you will leave when you refused to leave the US by the specified time? Why should they believe that you will obey their laws when you couldn’t obey that of the US?

3) they want to ensure that you aren’t an economic migrant. How can you convince them that you truly want to study and not just make money? After all, you couldn't have overstayed in the US doing nothing, you most likely overstayed cos you were working somehow.

These visa officers are humans, so try to put yourself in their shoes. If you can address these issues, maybe you will have a successful application.

Oh. I didn’t know tier 4 dependent was a different ball game. I just assumed that anything that has to do with joining a spouse is affiliated with the spouse visa.

According to the guidance, it will not be accepted. It's better you get it stamped on each page at the bank and post it if you are not using the Ad hoc bank statements printed on the bank’s letterhead.
Hi.

I’m not sure UK banks stamp on every page. They are credible enough. So all he has to do is print the statement and send it off to Sheffield alongside the other docs. My bank is Barclays and they even had a self service till for statements, when I asked them to stamp on it in time, they politely declined.

But the other requirements I can scan them to her right?

@Aphrodite007
Pls I asked a question earlier but got no response
Please I want to know if I can scan my UK bank statement /sponsorship letter to my wife or I should send them by post to her in nigeria
I had scanned and sent all the documents needed from my side before but I jst want to double check if it's ok or does the embassy need the original bank statement?

Pls based on your experience or other ppl experiences can u advise me pls
Thank you
Oh hi, deep apologies, I might have missed the question.

if this is for a visit visa Sending it via post to her would make it more authentic. (This is me assuming that you’re in the UK and she is in Nigeria. If you are in Nigeria, you don’t need to send that to her for a visit visa, it will be scanned at the Visa Office).

If, however, this is for a spouse visa, no dear. Please keep your statement and all other documents that are from you. She is the one that’s meant to send everything she has to you (by post), then you will attach the remaining documents to hers and send all to Sheffield, ok?

This is the thread for spouse visa, I advise you to start reading from page 320 or 330 so that you are well informed before you start asking questions.

Ok so this. Look for schools that offer the course you intend to do. Pick 5 schools that have 60% acceptance rate and above. Mail these schools’ administrators to ask if you can apply with a HND.

kindly put your response here to help people that may have a similar problem. Oh and I hope your GP is strong o, Cos I’m very aware that some unis tell HND students to start from third year in BSc before master’s.

Ok now I understand the logic. I forgot to switch the steering to the right when I put the passenger close to the curb in my head. It makes sense now.

Thanks for the information, actually I have done some researches about the whole process but as a first timer, you wouldn't be sure because the thought of, am I doing the right thing will surely continue to pop in the mind, and that was why I asked that. my mum is working which I can easily tell the ECO that she is the one sponsoring me, just asked that to know if I need some documents like employment letter and payslip to back it because its better to submit many documents than missing some out of ignorance or lack of knowledge, and justwise acted harsh with his reply. I have helped some people by giving answers based on their questions because I have actually passed those stages. So I think asking questions based on what you don't know shouldn't be categorise as lack of research or laziness. justwise has helped me a lot with some answers he gave people in the past on this forum, my questions can also help other prospective applicants in the future.
You’re welcome. Don’t feel bad about his response, tbh, I don’t know how he does it Cos I see some questions and I flip but he calmly answers those people. He had prolly had enough when he replied you, ok, just let it slide.

Yes I understand what you mean by carrying everything. Nothing is stopping you from doing that, you can if the payslips are readily available and if you aren’t invadinf the persons privacy to get them. But provided it’s for a tier 4 visa, they wouldn’t care about payslips as this could be some sort of savings.

In my application, I put self-sponsored all through and then showed them my account statement, nobody asked me how the money got there or why an unemployed person had so much money.

So just relax ok.

The tip to always remind yourself is regardless of left or right drive.... the front passenger side is always by the curb (for quick escape grin)

So as u drive just remember the passenger is by the curb / kerb / sidewalk. The rest will come to you with practise and some driving lessons... also automatic all d way, who has power to change gear... that one na too much work cheesy. Although uk has more manual cars than auto and manual are slightly cheaper
I think you made a mistake. UK driving sits the Driver by the curb, not the front passenger. It’s naija/US (normal) driving that sits the passenger by the curb.

I would be careful. Not all STEM Phds are paid for. The vast majority of paid STEM phds are in the biological sciences through NIEHS grants. I'm not sure the same is applicable to engineering phds. Also for international students, only your first year is paid. All other years are paid by your phd mentor so you should carefully choose only mentors who have adequate funding to pay for you.

All that to say - do your due diligence to check if funding is available to you or not.
Alright, thanks a lot. I’m not so accustomed to funding checks/searches in the US, but I feel it should be similar to the UK where you have the information you need on the website of the school or can just check at jobs.ac.uk (this website isn’t effective for funding in the US).

Basically, what I’m asking is if searching for what I want on the Uni’s website will be effective? (US Uni websites always suffer from information overload grin, most times I resort to finding what I need about a US Uni on google! grin).

Again, thanks for your response!

Doctorate degree is like an employment. So they have to see that you have what it takes to be invested on before they admit you. Combine with all what Time2Smile says, you would be interviewed by the adcom. Again, this is like an employment so you would automatically be working for your department. Lastly, it's called funding/fellowship/grant not scholarship.
Haha! Funding/Fellowship/Grant it is- can’t be getting our vocab wrong, can we?! Thanks for your response.

Funding for STEM PhD in the US works mostly this way: You will be given a tuition waiver and also a stipend that covers your living expenses in exchange for pursuing a PhD and working as a Teaching or Research Assistant. Heck, some schools even throw in health insurance and conference travelling allowance in too.
I don't know much about your sub-field of computing but your MSc, especially from a foreign university, should help mitigate any drawback of your BSc. GPA. Graduate admission is holistic and other parts of the application such as GRE, letters of recommendation, research experience are also considered.

In no particular order, these are the things you will need to give yourself a good chance:
1. Write GRE; A score above 320 is preferable, with at least 160 in Quant.
2. TOEFL. : Might not need this because your MSc if from the UK, but I will still advise you to write it and a score of at least 100 and 26 in the speaking section is desirable.
3. Get glowing Letters of recommendations from your former research supervisor and Professors.
4. Write a statement of purpose (SOP) addressing why you want to obtain a PhD and tailored to each school you are applying to.
5. Search for schools offering your course and that fit your profile. You don't want to be too ambitious, at the same time you shouldn't settle for mediocre schools.
6. Contact Professors in your area of research and mail them about your interest in joining their lab.
7. When all is said and done, you want to apply to at least 4 schools to spread your risk and improve your chances.

An exposition can be made about each of the different points above. This is just an overview. There is a need for you to research and learn how to accomplish each of these tasks. Therefore, make "Google" your friend. The resources are out there but you need to put the work in, find them and utilize them.
Oh thank you so much- this is so detailed! I have and can gain access to most of your stated requirements. And yes, google is a very good friend of mine, we go way bck! Thank you so much again! I have hopes on 2020, so I have time to gather.

Hi,

@Ezeigbo1ofImo @time2smile and anyone that can help.

Wow I had no idea that STEM students could get a PhD Scholarship in America, I’m utterly impressed by that! I can so relate to the pain of paying for studies while everyone is on a scholarship- We were 6 in class and I was the only one that paid a tuition, it was so painful!

I have been silently considering a PhD in the US mostly Cos my field of computing (cultural computing/user studies) is more acknowledged in the US than the UK.

So do you guys think someone with a 2.2 and merit (BSc & MSc respectively) would be considered for a scholarship. That BSc result makes me not even bother with scholarships at all, and I was honestly preparing to pay the PhD tuition until I saw your comments. God bless you guys plenty.

Still surprises me that anybody would want to come to the UK to study without doing some basic research before investing thousands of £s in a year.
Im telling you! I have realised that people going to study, most times do so Cos they just want to leave Nigeria and see studying as a pathway (to be honest, I don’t blame them, Nigeria is just hard!)

Before my application, The excitement alone made me learn almost everything I needed to know about my school, the county, bus routes, trekking time to school from my accommodation, big cities around my county, the weather/temperature, the airport and transportation arrangements from the airport! Funny enough, I was asked all these during my interview.

This is why it annoys me when people don’t do their own research but are going for a master’s/PhD, you will now wonder how will intend to cope with assignments (that rely on research). The US thread is the most annoying as some students even ask for courses they can apply for/study as a master’s! grin

Don’t get me wrong, I love nairaland and I love that people are patient and ready to answer questions, I myself am very happy to help with my limited knowledge but it kind of helps to know that the person you’re helping is also helping themselves too.

wow this is good news ohh. Like this is the best piece of news I have heard since the denial. Every agent I ask keeps telling me that once am denied on credibility I can never school in the Uk. Please could you be kind enough to share your agents contact with me? Thanks
The UK is simple. Pay the full tuition and you won’t have credibility problems. You guys are lucky that you even have nairaland (God bless the founder and the mods), I didn’t have anyone to help with mine so I did everything myself but paid the full tuition and accommodation for a year (dumb move yeah but I had no one to advise me otherwise). My interview was like me gisting with a friend and in 8 working days I got my passport back (didn’t do priority, didn’t even know what it meant) then left 2 days after.

I read the advise and suggestions on this thread and I cringe knowing fully well that I didn’t do half of them. Which made me come to the conclusion that UK visa is the easiest visa to get.

Just relax and sound confident. Speak like you love your course (which you should) and keep telling them how your knowledge of the course can help Nigeria (I think this can help).

They said my responses were vague and generic. I wasn't even given a chance for a 2nd interview to address the concerns, but its all good. now i just want to know what to do next. can in still apply to another school with the same course and re apply again? i am willing to pay for super priority.
Once you’ve been denied a visa, even if the super is raised to the power of 10, They will treat the application as regular because they have to investigate your refusal.

a lot of people seem to have problems with their oral interview, I don’t know how it’s done now but mine was via skype, she asked me why I wanted my course, why my school and where I was going to live. At some point in the convo she was really laughing at my responses, Cos they were funny to her.

So first tip is to relax, this is a school you wanted, this is a course you wanted (not your mum or dads choice) and I’m sure you have investigated where you will live and the distance to school, so answer calmly, speak slowly but fluently and smile (don’t show teeth).

Second tip is to investigate as much as you can,l about the course, the school and the environment, it makes them see your passion and genuineness.

I hope this helps you.

London: The UK has launched a pilot visa scheme for international students, including from India, applying for a Masters degree course in select high-profile universities, that would allow them to stay in the country for six months more after completing their course.

The Tier 4 Visa Pilot Scheme, launched by the UK Home Office this week, is open to students from around the world who win a place at one-year Masters courses at Imperial College London, Oxford, Cambridge or Bath universities.
grin grin grin when countries like Ireland, France and Canada give you one to two years post study, UK added two months to the 4 month initial limit (for selected schools o) and are proud of themselves grin- it’s not their fault!

Ok, as they have increased the stay, will they reduce the restriction on employing international students? So the two extra months is for the student to continue their retail or care job for longer? Silly country!

Don’t know why students still bother schooling in the uk. If I had known better, I would have waited patiently for Canada.

Can he claim his family/son/old friend was formed/reunited after he left Nigeria? Will this claim warrant his deport? It's actually 20years after the release now.
Thanks again
There’s no need for that because the man that disowned his family just to be able to stay in the uk cannot help your friend unless your friend is UNDER 18.

If the son changes his age just so his “dad” can help him out, or the “Dad” suddenly gets reunited with his family, the UKBA most likely will not believe the story and could deny the visas.

But he can try and come back and tell us what happened.

Hello.
I just started programming using Python, JavaScript.
How lucrative are these languages in the UK.

And also I want to get started in Cloud computing using AWS, Azure. How do I go about it?

You're an IT guy in UK which means you're exposed to lots of modern technologies. I'll be happy if you can be a mentor to me.

PS: I'm a student of Unilag living in Lagos, Nigeria.
Like you said, he is an IT guy in the UK, I’m sure he will answer better, but this is my own answer:

1) python and JavaScript are great languages, I have a personal preference for python (I am allergic to gibberish). But the most jobs I see are more incline to C and java.

2) yeah I have heard of azure and I think cloud computing is quite good. It’s not specially tied to a job title, as this is a skill (probably just a cloud computing expert). Some jobs do request for knowledge of azure.

I’ll advise you like someone did, the best thing to do is to look for IT jobs in the uk that you would love to do and then try to match your skills to their requirements. If you want to become a developer/programmer, search for the job title and look through the requirements of the ones that come up. Jot down the skills you lack and work towards acquiring them.

I hope this helps

P.S: how to go about it is to search for free online IT schools that can teach you the skill you need. I think there are some free ones such as Udemy, even YouTube. You can learn whatever you want online, all you have to do is search for it.

Between these two courses, which is more lucrative (i.e. pays higher and has a higher job security in a developed country) ;
1.MSC Finance and information management..
2.MSC Information System.
A job in IT that pays higher will solely depend on your desire to constantly develop yourself. It’s IT- it’s everchanging; there’s absolutely no safe net.

I studied MSc IS, and till date, it’s one of the best things that has happened to me. It’s a mixture of business knowledge, HR knowledge and IT knowledge. My job is to make, manage and upgrade systems and processes so as to solve problems in an organisation. My background is in Computing so I wouldn’t have picked finance and IM as that would need an accounting/audit/finance background.

In summary, it’s your choice what you want to study; If finance is your strength, F&IM will be perfect, if Computing and analysis is your strength, IS will be perfect.

Hi. Been reading this thread and I really like your input. Concerning your interest in IT, I will advise you to enrol for an ECDL class (European Computer(/ing) Drivers License, or so). It covers the basics of MS Office and would test you on what you’ve learned. This way you have your basics in check. Whether or not you want a career in Computing, this will give you an advantage at work. The Comptia trinity is meant for people that want to go in-depth into IT, it helps to have a passion for IT first.

A+ is for Computing architecture and covers knowledge of how to fix hardware problems (opening of your laptop/desktop and software/hardware diagnostics).

N+ is for basic networking. (It’s not as lucrative as it once was but the knowledge would still be good).

S+ Is for security (which is currently one of the most lucrative parts of Computing).

You must not learn a language, however having basic knowledge of one is good (it’s like a doctor having knowledge of first-aid application/procedure).

I hope this helps. Apologies for derailing the thread.
