CSTR2:Kikikikikiki. ![]() You expect our politicians under an evil spell to have such sense? ![]() |
On German roads in 2018, there were 3,265 road fatalities. There are about 46 million cars registered in Germany compared to under 12 million cars in Nigeria. With 38.7 million cars on British roads, there were 1,770 deaths. Perhaps if we had better medical care, fatalities would be less. |
healthserve:Nor be small thing o. Till now Buhari & EFCC have not traced $50 billion Sanusi alleged GEJ stole. Instead they are using monies individual officials stole (like officials have been doing since 1960) to detract Jonathan. Soon zombies will blame the millions in Gandollar's babariga on Jonathan. ![]() May God take care of our enemies like he does to GEJ's enemies. Amen! |
CalabarHookUp:They go into new pockets. In Ibadan accent " shebi gofment money na turn by turn. Na nassonal cake o". ![]() |
adedayourt:Just wait. I am sending some macho men to come panel beat you. ![]() |
oduastates:To me decongesting Lagos is critical now. Not just decongesting 3rd Mainland Bridge. Would we need 5th Mainland bridge in 20 years? We need a lasting solution. Create new towns in Ogun corridor. Complete with amenities, job opportunities, decent metro rail and affordable housing. Mainland is the most congested. Too many people need to go from mainland to island to work. This should be reduced. You are talking of environmental concerns, our people care about big structures. Not the impact on environment and health or that it may become irrelevant in 30 years time. They will not understand. If you do not sing songs of praise about anything Lagos you are considered a hater. Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait, Qatar are there for us to learn from. Places that developed in the last 30 years. |
useurkidney3121:They said he will not last up to a year. That had he be patient he could have become president one day. I argued that his deft move has let him achieve the highest post a Northern Yoruba can achieve. Because neither core North nor SW will give Northern Yoruba VP or presidency. I said even 6 months as senate president was good enough. I was right. |
They want only criminals and touts to come in instead. 9ja just doesn't work. |
adedayourt:With 6 A1s in the relevant subjects? Did you read the OP? |
remi1444:It should have been 5 billion Naira even. So that military hierarchy will start training their soldiers properly about human rights. |
So server allegation of manipulation by Atiku is being confirmed by APC members themselves. They want to do what they did at INEC at APC. They said INEC server did not exist. APC has a server but INEC has none zombies claimed. |
naijaguy123456:Same goes for hundreds of millions of women. The average girl living in your street wants to marry a successful pastor, politician, doctor, banker, a guy based abroad and doing well, etc. Even a jobless girl that bleaches anyhow. Nothing unusual. Davido wanted and approached her, so what's the complain? All those young yellow ladies that married Alafin of Oyo, would they marry him if he was an elderly onikeke around the corner? |
The guy knew too much. He had to go. The problem of dining with the devil. |
Las las everything is audio in 9ja. Na wa o. |
Ize-Iyamu seems like a reckless gambler. He wants to be used by Oshiomhole to settle scores with Obaseki. You cannot be moving from party to party desperate to be governor. While Oshio can try using Federal might and his billions of Edo money stashed away to buy delegates and rig the vote, Northern people know his game. He's increasingly too controversial. And he's not popular with many sitting governors. They can even unseat him as national chairman before September/Edo election next year. |
cbrass:Actually Owo was conquered by Benin Empire. But history agrees that Owo was left with "much autonomy". It never seemed like a proper colony but even the attire of Olowo very much mirrors Oba royal regalia. And many other similarities. My own family history is very much attached to this conquest. But the sacking of Akure in the 1820s by Benin Empire is pretty clearly documented. It was not an amicable treaty thing. By the way Otun in Northern Ekiti was the boundary of sphere of influence between Oyo Empire & Benin Empire. Aare Ona Kakanfo and Iyase Ekpenede of Benin made the demarcation. Kankanko facing Oyo and planted Rafia palm (a plant common in Northern Oyo when Illorin was still part of it) & Iyase facing Benin and planted Ikhimwin tree traditional to Benin. This was the Benin-Oyo Treaty at Otun. Essentially all of Ekiti & Ondo (Estern Yorubaland in the Savannah) was/were accepted as being under Benin. A guy from Otun came here to rant and deny it here on NL years back but he ended up asking me to tell him more about the history of Otun. ![]() You know Benin people have to very much attached to Benin and surrounding areas. Benin never wanted a "Lebensraum" so didn't move many natives to conquered lands. Core Benin didn't have large population so relied on ingenuity, military efficiency, mercenaries and some soldiers from colonies to fight wars of expansion and quell rebellion. Benin only moved a few members of the aristocracy & royalty to oversee new lands. Mostly not disrupting the social order of a new territory but mostly introducing Benin royal culture among the ruling classes of new lands. With time Benin elite were absorbed into the land and even Benin culture once introduced came to be seen as indigenous. Take for example Lagos. Admitting that Oba of Lagos & several aristocratic families of Lagos like Obanikoro are of Benin origin caused Late Oba Oyekan & current Oba Akiolu much flack from Yoruba people. The norm in SW is to invent a link to Oduduwa somehow. Actually my family background makes me a far more neutral person than most people. I began arguing assertions here on NL like 8 years ago as a bridge-builder. But our SW people made it clear that unless you toe SW version of things without question, then you are a sell-out. I once volunteered to fund DNA tests for at least a dozen or more people from Benin & Ife royal lineage to see if there's any ancestral link. You can trace which came from which with it these days. As an objective & scientific way to see things. Nobody took the offer. I doubt if people really want the truth. Because it might hurt. But there's nothing to gain by claiming this or that. A dispassionate, objective and scientific approach is needed. As for Oba, it's been in use in Benin since Ogiso times. We had Obagodo way before Oranmiyan. Oba means it's shining. Today Oba is still praised as shining like the sun and the moon. There is |
Some SW leaders want to walk through blood and dead bodies of their people into Aso Rock and get hands on oil money. That must be a sign of utmost sophistication. We can see why they were hot on hate speech bill but not on fighting insecurity. |
gloriaunobi:You be very wucked sombarry. ![]() |
cbrass:Well, I have disputed Oduduwa falling from the story here on Nairaland over the years and often led to intertribal spat so that's another story. When you hear something often enough, you begin to believe it. Be it true or not. Fact is your grand dad and grandma would never have called themselves "ovbiubini". But ovbiedo. Someone going from Ovia or Orionmwon to Benin would not have said "I am going to Ubini or Bini" but to Edo. I grew up to meet people born in 1870s. People who were around 16 or 17 years old in 1897 as Oba Ovonramwen went to Calabar. That some people still used various versions of Bini does not remove the fact that Ewuare the first (1440 to 1473) abolished Ubini by 1440 already. Some people still call Benin Republic Dahomey and Ghana Gold Coast. Whether some citizens there prefer the old name or not reality is they now have new names. Oba Ewuare the first had nothing to hide. He just wanted to finally remove the disparaging name given by Oronmiyan. Though his father Imadoduwa/Oduduwa was an exiled Benin prince, previously known as Ekaladerhan. Oronmiyan was essentially a foreigner brought up within Yoruba culture. The story is pretty well established and well known. Ewuare the first was an astute politician, warrior and reformer. No other Oba has left so much impact on Edo culture than Ewuare. A new name was just another of his political, social, religious, military and wide ranging reforms. Edo by the way was a loyal servant who saved his life during struggle for the throne. He thought that such bravery, loyalty and dedication epitomise Igodomigodo spirit and honoured him with renaming the empire Edo. The servant Edo lost his life in that struggle. |
Na wa o |
Ok, hmmm |
cbrass:Nothing like Bini. It's Benin. In fact by 15th century it was already known as Edo. As renamed from Igodomigodo by Ewuare I. It's creation of Edo state recently that now makes it more necessary to use Benin for sake of Esan, Owan, Igbanke and others who are also Edo State people. Till now, you are "Ovbiedo" as a Benin person Not "Ovbiebini". ![]() Beny was Portuguese from Ile Ubini writing it in 1478. The British wrote it in 1553 as Benin when they came later. It was Itsekhiri who told them at the coast upon landing that the power king inland ruling over the whole area is Oba of Ile Ubini, Beny, Bini or Benin never was our cup of tea really. Ile Ubini was never popular among Edo people. By 1440 Oba Ewuare I had abolished Ile Ubini totally as another name. But just like Nigeria as name of our country, we didn't chose Benin. Either way we just took the British version as Benin. But Ovbiedo (Ivbiedo as plural) is what we are first and foremost. People feel the need to make it look or sound more of vernacular by writing Bini. Even many Benin people are guilty of this. Despite correction from the palace over many years. Benin/Edo people called Lagos Eko as a military camp. Portuguese later called it Lagos because of the lagoon. The British records even show Eleko Dosunmu as DOCEMO. So most parts of 9ja have had names tampered with. But enduring inherent culture is not at all about an additional name given by invaders. |
midnighter:Well, I don't know. I only hear of how Nigerians complain about medical/healthcare people. Even hear on NL. I was not educated in 9ja and I do not work in 9ja. In a place like UK, any little thing can earn you a disciplinary hearing by GMC or NMC for nurse or HPC for other allied. You know many things we do are just to fulfil all righteousness. Not taken to heart. Just like the rigged elections since 1999 that ewe call democracy. Back to the beginning of our chat. Parents want their kids to have a bright career and economic future. So they see gainful employment as the most likely way to do so. I cannot blame them. But modern parents should be more flexible. Of course many people do jobs they didn't want to and end up being very good and pleasant to colleagues and customers. Like the many engineers, doctors, architects, biologists, surveyors, historians, geographers and others working in banks. |

midnighter:Most likely, But most schools do not offer it anyway. |
midnighter:Well we are all pragmatic to an extent, but in healthcare it shouldn't be the over-riding factor. Because by the time you find out that you're not fulfilled in it, you might have put in 10 years of training and education already. Too late to leave it. So you soldier on doing the bare mininum, while enjoying the prestige and rewards. People are different sha. So why do you there's this impression in 9ja that healthcare staff are mostly wicked and heartless? Can poor working conditions and our culture of rudeness when in a prestigious position alone explain it? |
deuzgreat:He meant the guy still searching for WAEC result na. ![]() See where he wrote zoologist or..... |
midnighter:Nope! Maybe the obsolete machines still in use in some parts of 9ja. You screen yourself properly from radiation. Radioactivity is measured in the areas around work to check for risk. Depends on what you do, you might be mostly using ultra-sound machines even. Virtually no harm. |
Dude congrats! But a bit of caution. Think of life after marriage. Are you going to be having kids right away? Will you have to train some of her siblings? What kind of quality of life can you offer your wife and young family? Can she manage with you if things are tight? Too many marriages crashing over money my guy. After marriage plan your life well. If after one year of marriage no kids people will say the lady is infertile or your friend had 3 kids after 5 years of marriage so you must do same. People fall into these traps. Be your own man. Good luck to you. |
9PBLIVE:6 years single term. No re-election. Best for Nigeria. Jonathan stayed just under 6 years. The president can be himself right away and focus on leaving a legacy than being cagey to secure a second term. Rotation can also be better achieved. After 30 years, each geopolitical zone will have produced a president, the last one just taking office by then. As things stand now, after 30 years, SE or NE might not have produced a president. That cannot be good for national unity. The law could have been passed to commence in 2023 since Bubu is already in his second term. |
Macauley07:This is a typical African parents' way of seeing things. I had a prof who when she was a student took a break from medical school to do what is called an intercalated BSc degree year in Anatomy. She enjoyed Anatomy so much that she never returned to complete her MBBChir. She went on to do PhD in Anatomy and became a foremost anatomist in a major European country respected internationally. She edited the world's most famous anatomy textbook. The first and only woman to do so till now. She was head of anatomy in my university and a delight to med students. In the name of pragmatism we often stifle the talents and dreams of our children. Fela Kuti, Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Adichie were asked by their families to study medicine. Achebe & Adichie actually started medical school. Would they have achieved as much as doctors? Probably not. If you do Psychology, you can become a clinical psychologist after clinical training and passing the accreditation exam. Psychiatry is increasingly called Psychological Medicine to reduce the stigma. So there are opportunities in the right countries abroad. If you are on the intellectual side than practical side, nursing may not be fun. You have to be dedicated, compassionate and caring. Not all nice people have these qualities to a high level. Remember how we all complain about wicked nurses and heartless doctors in 9ja. Many have no business in such caring professions BUT went in for better prospects or family pressure. Healthcare is a calling. Something one should choose after looking at oneself in the mirror thoroughly. Not something to do out of pragmatism or under pressure. As a nurse in the West, will you feel fulfilled dealing with a drunk guy in A&E at 3 am on Christmas morning? Finally getting him to sleep off his drunken state with saliva and other bodily fluids soiling his clothes? Or a homeless person brought in to A&E one cold winter night with a festering sore in his leg, and even with a face mask over your nose you still cannot breathe? I for one liked those challenges and more. the opportunities to do much good are immense. But not everyone does. Some just couldn't wait to get out of the hospital to take even lesser paid jobs. After long years of education and training. Have you considered radiography? It's less stress and if you pursue higher studies you might enjoy lecturing with it. Reason with your parents. Las las if you must do nursing, do higher degrees too. But usually you will still have clinical commitments an honorary lecturer just like docs. |
MhizJoyce:Those who do not value their culture enough might lose them but not in Benin. Those items that were hidden during the war and those in locations the British didn't know are still available today. I know that firsthand. |
