PoliticsBreaking News: President Buhari Asked APC To Avoid Consensus, Jonathan Got Waive by ArewaNorth(op): 5:22am On May 27, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari from reliable sources has asked all APC Presidential Aspirants to go through the presidential primary process and will support whoever emerges as the winner of the party's primary election.
On the other hand, Former President Goodluck Jonathan is seriously interested in contesting for the Presidency after several times debunking the rumours of his contest and he got waiver from the ruling party to contest but there is no any sign that he will be adopted as the party's consensus candidate.

PoliticsHow Politicians Pushed Me To Contest, Collected All My Savings – Ex-ig by ArewaNorth(op): 8:27pm On May 26, 2022
A former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mike Okiro, has revealed how some unnamed politicians allegedly “swindled” him out of all his savings when he contested Senate seat after retirement.

Okiro, who spoke in Abuja at a programme tagged: “Presidential aspirants’ media interactive platform” organised by New Nigeria Dream Initiative (NNDI), explained that some group of persons tricked him to join the political race after he left office and gradually collected all his money till he was left with nothing.

The septuagenarian lambasted Nigerians for always collecting money from politicians when seeking elective positions, saying they are the problems of the government and “we have more faults than the politicians”.

The former police boss and 13th indigenous Inspector-General of Police, who served between 2007 and 2009, cautioned Nigerians to say “enough is enough” in 2023 by rejecting politicians’ money during the voting process.

He said, “Nigerians will talk about the leadership deficiency, but I say no, that is not enough! It takes two angles! If leaders have deficiency, we have followers’ complacency! Because if leaders are behaving, we just laugh, wave at them, and say walk and go! And they will do the same thing again.

“But if we say no! Enough is enough, they change! You go, they give you money for votes so that you can vote for somebody whether the person can perform or not! They give you N5, 000 and you look for four years. That means the N5, 000 is your due for four years.

“I am talking about this thing because once in a time, the politicians have faults but we have more faults than the politicians. I have an experience, let me share the experience, I corrected myself and I said bye bye to that thing.

“I contested election in Abuja here, Senate. I was on my own when they called me to come and contest. I said I have just retired, they said no, come and contest! I said Okay, I will discuss with my wife. I told my wife and she said I am afraid.

“So, they would come to me and say we want to go here, bring money; we want to do this, bring money; we want to do that, bring money; I gave all my savings, nothing again to give. They came one day, I said I was not going to give more money because I have nothing to give you.

“They told me the former man was not doing very well but I should come and try. You want me to give more but where do I get money from? I said okay, let’s do it this way, assuming I now go to borrow money or sell property to give to you, and I am elected, of course, the first thing I will do is to pay back that debt and all the property I sold, I buy them back.

“I know that after four years, there will be another election, I will reserve money for that election so that I will not borrow again. You people are the fault of this government. We should say no to election vote sellers.”

He added that Nigerians should jettison voting of political parties and ensure they bring in someone with good track records who can deliver dividends of democracy to them.

He added, “We’re not going to follow bad wagons, we are going to vote for people irrespective of their political parties. It can be A B C D or UAW or whatever party. We will look at individuals. Is he good?

“Look at his track records! Look at people who are qualified, not where they come from, irrespective of the party they belong to, to make sure that if they rule us, the dividend of democracy will reach everyone.”

Politics2023: Ongoing Primary Election, Complete Mess, Failed Process – Goodluck Jonatha by ArewaNorth(op): 6:55pm On May 26, 2022
2023: Ongoing primary election, complete mess, failed process – Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described the ongoing primary elections across the country as a mess.

DAILY POST reports that aspirants and delegates in some parts of the country have monetized the process.

Some aspirants who lost the election had demanded a refund from delegates who were given millions of Naira in a bid to secure a ticket for the 2023 elections.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja during a book launch titled “Political Party Governance” as authored by Dr. Mohammed Wakil, a former Minister of State, Jonathan said the process has failed.

According to the former president, it would not be good to elect a president and governors using the same process.

Jonathan said: “These whole primaries going on across the country is a mess. This is not a standard practice. The process has failed.

“We cannot use the process to elect president, governors, senators and House of Representatives members and others.

“The process has already failed, which is not good for the country. But we will manage and move on.

“We pray that good people should come. I hope that what happened this year, 2022 will not happen again in this country.”

olawalepopoola:
Please enlighten us the more
Then Ironsi imposed a unitary system of government on Nigeria so that everything can belong to a region who snatch it!
We must know our history so that when we want to make corrections, we will not end up concealing the truth. This has nothing to do with tribalism but everything to do with the truth.....at times when lies litter the streets. There is a tendency to think those are truths and facts.

Prof. Ben Nwabueze was the man who drafted the constitution that took away powers from regions and handed it to the central government because his brother Aguiyi Ironsi was the head of state then but some ignorant or selfish people limit their accusations to only Abdussalam Abubakar constitution that gave birth to current democratic govt. Today, they're shouting restructuring that they helped destroy. We won’t forget.”*.

The some people known to enjoy blaming other tribes and Lord Luggard/Britain for their seeming claim of being in third class citizen status in Nigeria or refuse to let them go. In their perpetual attempts to play the victim card, they recount the political events of Nigeria from 1914 to the present in a half-baked and highly selective manner which cleverly avoids the mention of the roles played by their elites who by all natural laws of judgement were actually responsible for the woes that befell not only them but the entire country
However, the national archives have the complete and unedited history of Nigeria regarding the political events beginning way back from even before 1914.
Shortly after the 1914 Amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates, it started getting clear that the country was bound to fail as the amalgamation in question was done with colonial fiat without the consent and consensus of the different tribes which were over 300. This prompted the political leaders to start asking for de-amalgamation so as to forestall the future danger which the forced amalgamation portended.

To that end, Ahmadu Bello, speaking on behalf of the Northern protectorate in 1944 described the amalgamation as "The mistake of 1914 which if allowed to remain will ultimately lead to unstoppable bloodshed and a failed country".

Awolowo, speaking on behalf of the Yorubas and Western minorities, described Nigeria as a mere geographical expression not qualified to be called a country let alone a nation. Awolowo added that if the amalgamation could not be reversed, then Nigeria should be structured as a strictly federal state so as to enable each tribe enjoy autonomy this freedom from being dominated by any one single tribe.

But Nnamdi Azikiwe, speaking for the Igbos, denounced Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello, terming them ethnic champions. He accused them of nursing a sectional agenda against the unity of Nigeria, and he declared further that the Unity of Nigeria was non-negotiable.

After moving the motion for independece in 1953, Anthony Enahoro proposed that a secession clause should be incorporated into the future constitution of Nigeria so as to give legal backing for any tribe to peacefully exit the forced union if it feels marginalized in future. According to Enahoro, such provision in our constitution would instill in all Nigeria's future leaders the fear of the consequences of misgovernance.

However, Azikiwe, speaking on behalf of Igbos, rose against him in the parliament and labelled him an agent of disunity, and enemy of Nigeria. At a later date, Awolowo too made a case for secession clause, but Azikiwe again resisted him and instigated the colonial authorities to threaten him and Enahoro with charges of treasonable felony if they didn't stop proposing secession clause for the future constitution.

While Azikiwe did all these, Igbos cheered and urged him on because they felt the future Nigeria was theirs to dominate and lord it over every other tribe.

Before independece, Tafawa Balewa too had in a public speech described Nigeria as a British experiment and Nigeria's unity as a British intention which Nigerians themselves don't believe in. But Azikiwe kicked and demonized him too. Had Azikiwe co-operated with Enahoro, Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Balewa about the secession clause, Nigeria perhaps would not have been this misgoverned.

It should be noted that there were many Igbo members of the parliament in which Azikiwe fought against Awolowo's secession clause proposal in the link above, but not a single one of them rose against Azikiwe or condemned him.
Igbos initially never wanted to hear anything like secession in Nigeria because they so much believed, though falsely, that they were the most educated tribe.
As an evidence of Igbo domination agenda hence their initial resistance to the idea of secession; here is a quote:
"From all indications, the god of us Igbos have destined us to rule the whole of Africa"

North and Yorubas never wanted amalgamation of Nigeria and Unitary system, they opposed it to the core but some people pushed for it.
Ahmadu Bello and Awolowo spoke strongly against it and predicted the dangers but they overlooked it and pushed for the amalgamation and Unitary system and here we are today.

PoliticsI’m Now Left With Nobody – Husband Of Woman Killed With 4 Kids By IPOB by ArewaNorth(op): 11:00am On May 25, 2022
The husband of the pregnant woman killed along with her four children by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Jubril Ahmed, said he is still in trauma.

Jubril who works as a security guard in Anambra State told Daily Trust that his wife was nine months pregnant and the family was expecting a new baby within the week when they were killed.

He said, “They were coming back home after she visited her sister who was living in the nearby town. She and the four children were all wearing hijabs; that was why the gunmen targeted them.

“As I’m talking to you, I’m in the process of recovering their corpses. The police have given me some documents which I will use to collect the corpses. I’m in the mortuary now, they are demanding N30, 000 from me before they will release the corpses of my family.

“My hope is to take the corpses to Ganye Local Government Area in Adamawa State and bury them because the cemetery the Arewa community is using here is already filled.

Jibril gave the name of his late wife as Harira Jibril, 32, and those of the four children as Fatima, 9; Khadijah, 7; Hadiza, 5; and Zaituna, 2.

“I’m now left with nobody; they have wiped out my entire family. I am so worried and in trauma, there is a need for the government to do something,” Jibril said.

The leader of the Hausa Community in Orunba South, Sarki Kabiru Bakari, told Daily Trust that they later recovered the corpses of the victims Tuesday evening.

He, however, said the plans to take them to their hometown in Adamawa for burial had been cancelled because the corpses were not taken care of in the mortuary, and could not withstand the travel to the North.

“We have now decided to bury them in Awka Wednesday (today). The mortuary attendant did not treat the corpses, no preservation measure was done; hence we cannot travel with the corpses as they have already started decomposing. We have no other option than to take them to Awka and bury them there,” he said.

Bakari added that the security personnel had been deployed in the area and that the Anambra State police commissioner has visited them and assured them of swinging into action.

“But after we bury the victims, we will all relocate to our hometown in the North; we are no longer safe here. The husband of the woman will also relocate back to Adamawa as soon as he buried his family; he is working here as a security guard,” he said.

ACF, NEF condemns killings

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) have condemned the killing of northerners in the South East by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

While the NEF urged the government to take decisive actions to end the killings, the ACF called on the government to pay attention to security.

The NEF Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said northerners and even easterners must be protected from the activities of IPOB.

He called on the government to take decisive steps to end the killings and the targeting of northerners.

“The events in the south East particularly the events in recent days are tragic and very dangerous. There is a lot of anger in the land as there appears to be an attempt to provoke some local communities as well as some parts of Nigeria. Our position is that those with the responsibility to stop this must stop it now.

“We are appealing to everybody to remain calm and not to take the laws into their hands but we are demanding that northerners must be protected same way that we are demanding that easterners must be protected from the activities of these people who are killing.

“There is no excuse for failure to stop what IPOB is doing and we hope that in the next day or two, we will see decisive action on the part of governments, on the part of governors, and on the part of northern leaders and the elite to speak up and stop what is going on there, the targeting of northerners in the southeast must stop. The killings of even south easterners by IPOB must stop; we cannot have a country like this.”

The Secretary-General of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Murtala Aliyu, said it was important for the government to bring issues of insecurity to the forefront, secure the country, secure the south East from IPOB and secure the North from bandits and all other threats.

He said, “It is important that government pay attention to security more than any other thing today. ACF is worried like every Nigerian over the killings in Anambra State. Our main worry is the general situation in the south East. Our people, the northerners are also victims, but even the other Nigerians that are living there are not safe, especially even the Igbo themselves.

“The important thing is to look at the whole issue holistically beyond regional or sectarian issues but look at the security of the country. It is quite unfortunate that today, in Nigeria, Nigerians are not safe wherever they are.

“Our own take is that government must take this seriously, a lot of energy is spent on the electioneering, yes, the election is necessary, bringing a new government is necessary but we think that before this government leaves, they must do something about the insecurity otherwise, even election will be impossible in some locations.”

CAN condemns killing

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna State chapter, has condemned the murder of the pregnant woman and her children.

Describing it as barbaric, the association said it was unfortunate that people no longer value life in the country.

The CAN chairman in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph John Hayap, in a statement titled, ‘The expansion of evil versus the silence of godly people in Nigeria,’ lamented how evil had taken over Nigeria on the ground of religion, region, ethnicity and other differences.

The association urged the federal government to go after the murderers and all others who have killed any Nigeria from any region or of any identity.

“Until our government and law enforcement agencies go after all criminals and murderers and justice is seen to have been done on all murderers, this evil will not stop and the murderers will not see their crime as evil but instead, they will smartly make us fight amongst ourselves and pay less attention to their crime.”

Arewa youths challenge Soludo to act

Also speaking on the issue, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) in a statement by its National President, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, yesterday said the killings of northerners in the South East presupposed an ethnic cleansing agenda.

It urged governors of the region to take urgent steps to “end the killing of innocent northerners or face the legal consequences of their inaction.”

Rising from its emergency meeting in Kaduna, the AYCF said the murder of northerners working or trading in the South East at the slightest opportunity was an unacceptable act of undue provocation.

The group said it had expected Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra to use his exposure in governance and management to tackle the killings, but seemed to have been a ‘disappointment’.

The statement said, “The fact that the governors of the South East are the chief security officers of their states but do nothing to stop the unprovoked killing of northerners presupposes an ethnic cleansing agenda and we condemn it, in whatever guise – IPOB attack or ESN.

“The killing of a mother and the baby she cuddled as well as the Christian Aircraft Engineer of northern extraction means the lives of our own people are no longer valued in the South East, where IPOB, ESN, and so-called unknown gunmen are doing as they please as non-state actors, unhindered.

“Silence of these governors, despite the brutal attacks on our sons and daughters in the South East must be stopped now and we want to sound our note of warning, that no Nigerian has the monopoly of violence and that northerners’ respect for the rule of law should never be taken as a weakness.”

Northerners not targeted for killings in Anambra, says Soludo

But reacting, Governor Soludo denied that the coordinated killings were targeted at northerners in the state, saying it is a general case of insecurity affecting everybody.

He said that the Anambra people had suffered more casualties in the ongoing killings in the state than any other.

The governor, in a statement released by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, said the story that northerners were the target was capable of inciting violence in the country.

Soludo said, “While it is true that there is general insecurity across the country, there is no targeted religious or ethnic killing in Anambra State. As a matter of fact, the Anambra indigenes have suffered more casualties as a result of the unfortunate killings.

He added, “The report, therefore, is totally unacceptable and inimical to the unity and progress of the nation. The government of Anambra State hereby states that the report is not only sensational but misleading and should be immediately retracted to reflect the real situation on the ground.”

The governor stressed that Anambra indigenes, the northerners and other people from other parts of the country had lived and done business together peacefully because of shared common values.

He assured of continuous efforts to work for the good and progress of all and sundry in the state.

Police reassure Hausa community of protection

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Echeng E. Echeng, yesterday visited the Hausa community in the state and reassured them of their safety.

The CP in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the investigation had begun, adding that policemen had been deployed in strategic places in the state.

BusinessIs Dangote Truly Broke? by ArewaNorth(op): 12:37pm On May 24, 2022
The Nigeria media space has been abashed with the story of the richest man in Africa, Mr Aliko Dangote being broke and needing a bailout to complete his refinery project.

The story reverberated in Nigeria because the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is relying on the yet-to-be-completed refinery to turn the country’s fortune around.

Last April, Information minister, Lai Mohammed described the project as a game-changer to conserve foreign exchange by ending the importation of petroleum products, creating employment and generating foreign exchange through the export of finished products.

The American credit rating agency noted that Aliko Dangote needs about $1.1 billion (N900 billion) to complete his refinery in Lagos.

It further detailed that the refinery’s existing creditors will not be able to give the organisation the amount needed for the completion of the project “If the transaction is not successful or should completion cost overrun or market conditions in the cement or urea deteriorate materially.”

However, Daily Trust’s analysis of the current and future cash flows from all of the Dangote Industries’ Limited productive assets (sugar, cement, refining, salt, agriculture, fertilizer, etc) does not lay credence to the story that he is broke.

Speaking with our reporter, a financial expert and publisher of Money Central, Patrick Atunya said the talk about Dangote being broke smacks of financial illiteracy.

Dangote Cement shares are as good as currency

The expert argued that Dangote Cement Plc (DCP), the flagship company of DIL, is a significant contributor to DIL’s consolidated profile.

The company is supported by large-scale operations in Nigeria and Pan-Africa. In 2021, DCP’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation or EBITDA contribution to DIL stood above 90%.

In 2021, revenues from cement sales in all its operations (Nigeria and the rest of Africa) rose by 34% and amounted to N1.383 trillion. After paying taxes and making other expenses Dangote Cement reported a profit of N346.4 billion.

Fitch Ratings forecasts that Dangote’s cement business will average $1.1 billion per annum in EBITDA between 2022 and 2025, making it one of the most profitable cement firms in the world.

DIL owns 85.8% of Dangote Cement.

Atunya said: “Because of the expected free cash flows from the cement operations, Dangote Cement stock, listed on the Nigeria Exchange Limited, are valued at 14 times earnings, for a market capitalisation of N5.11 trillion.

“This means that from just one of his firms, Dangote Cement alone, Aliko Dangote is liquid to the tune of N4.38 trillion (representing DIL’s 85.8% ownership).”

A liquid asset is an asset that can easily be converted into cash in a short amount of time. Stocks, money market instruments and marketable securities are generally considered liquid assets.

“This alone debunks the notion of Dangote being broke as he can sell down his stake in the cement firm or borrow against its assets if he chooses, as a way to raise money,” he added.

In 2021, the directors recommended a dividend of N20 per share for shareholders. Daily Trust analysis indicates that DIL received N292 billion as dividends last year from Dangote Cement.

Equity sale in refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in 2021 took a 20% stake worth $2.76 billion in the Dangote Refinery Project valuing the refinery at $13.8 billion then.

Analysts believe that the valuation is much higher today with the refinery nearing completion and the current geopolitical landscape with the Russia – Ukraine war, which has sent commodities soaring.

Funding for the completion of the refinery project could then be gotten through further asset sales in the project.

DIL could today probably raise $2 billion with a 10% – 15% sale of stakes in the refinery, more than is needed to complete the project.

Fitch expects the project to contribute around $1 billion to EBITDA annually when ramped up from 2024.

Assets for Loan

One way through which companies finance expansions or acquisitions is through loans backed by their existing assets.

Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) is planning to establish a local bond programme amounting to $750 million to partially finance the completion of its refinery and petrochemical plant.

Dangote Oil Refining Company Limited (DORC) and Dangote Fertiliser Limited (DFL), DIL’s subsidiaries, will be co-obligors under the proposed programme.

The bond programme, together with DILs retained earnings from its other operations should be enough cash to complete the refinery in Atunya’s opinion.

Dangote Fertiliser

Dangote’s Fertiliser plant was commissioned last year and there were 2 lines operational as of April 2022.

The fertiliser plant line 1 is expected to gradually ramp up to an average of 60% capacity utilisation in 2022-2023 and to around 80% by 2025, from 25% in 2021. Line 2 will ramp to around 80% capacity rate by 2025 from 50% in 2022, according to Fitch.

The fertiliser plant is expected to be highly profitable also with a 66% EBITDA margin in 2022-2025.

The urea prices have soared as the Russia – Ukraine war affected commodity prices, currently traded at USD630/ton as of May 17.

Dangote Fertiliser plant has also begun exports of its products, meaning it is earning foreign exchange for DIL, which can be channelled into the completion of the refinery project.

Fitch estimates DIL to have an adequate liquidity score at 1.5x for 2021 with estimated total external group debt of $3.8 billion.

It has no significant maturities until 2023 when Fitch expects the refinery to start generating cash flow.

“We expect positive free cash flow FCF from 2023 when both projects (refinery and fertiliser plants) are ramped up and Capex is moderate,” Fitch said.

Atunya said: “In essence, Aliko Dangote is far from broke and will continue to smile all the way to the bank as all his major projects; cement, refinery and fertiliser generate mountains of cash annually into the foreseeable future.”

PoliticsIPOB Kills Woman, 4 Kids, 6 Other Northerners In Anambra by ArewaNorth(op): 10:19am On May 24, 2022
Militants of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Sunday killed a woman, her four children and six others, all of them of northern extraction in Anambra State, Daily Trust reports.

The pregnant woman and her children were killed at Isulo, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.

The killings marked a new low in the heightened attacks on non-indigenes by IPOB terrorists who are also attacking the symbol of authority including the police and the military.

Natives of Anambra State and the South East, in general, have not also been spared by the IPOB terrorists who have been wreaking havoc for a long time amid agitation for secession.

However, 48 hours after the Sunday’s killing of the northerners without any provocation, the story has not been told by any of the national print and broadcast media despite wide coverage by the social media with graphic photos of the mayhem and condemnation by security operatives, groups and individuals over what they called “conspiracy of silence.”

The killing of the northerners was perpetrated by the outlawed group a few days after the discovery of the head of an Anambra State lawmaker who was abducted by the terrorists.

Sunday’s carnage

The Sarkin Hausawa of Orunba North LGA, Alhaji Sa’id Muhammad, yesterday decried that northerners in Anambra State have made up their minds to leave the state because of the constant killing of their relatives by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed wing of the outlawed IPOB.

In an interview with Daily Trust, Muhammad said the killing of the pregnant woman together with her four children by gunmen was not new to them as many of his people were killed in such a callous manner.

“The woman was from Adamawa State. Before her death, she lived in Orumba South, and on Sunday, she visited her friends with her four children.

“It was on her way back home in Orumba South that she was killed. She was being conveyed by a commercial motorcyclist when they were ambushed by the gunmen. They murdered her and her four children but the motorcyclist escaped,” he said.

In a gory video trending on Twitter and seen by Daily Trust, the victims were seen lying in the pool of their blood with bullets spread around and a narrator speaking in Igbo saying, “Everybody should look at this video that they have shot a woman and her four children. They are from the North. And they are shooting everybody they see on the street; so people should be careful.”

Our correspondents report that on that very Sunday, five commercial motorcycle riders were also killed and their bikes burnt at Onocha LGA. The bodies of four of the deceased were deposited in the morgue while the fifth one was burnt to ashes.

Mohammed said another man, Abdullahi, who was selling roasted meat by the roadside at Nnanka, was also killed at his suya spot.

“His body was by the roadside since Sunday evening until in the afternoon on Monday when I called the police DPO and informed him about it and requested him to help us recover the remains.

“He told me that he cannot send his men there because of the sit-at-home order. We are now planning to leave for North as we can no longer stay here…They are killing us on daily basis,” he said.

He said his younger brother, Aliyu, was also killed two months ago in a similar manner.

Daily Trust reports that some trucks conveying goods to the South were also set ablaze in Anambra at the weekend and the drivers and other occupants were killed, injured or disappeared without a trace. Some truck drivers of northern extraction said that they are now operating with fear in the South East region.

Adamu Shu’aibu, who works with a private company in the region said that the rate at which the militants were attacking and killing drivers was alarming.

“I lost many of my colleagues to the nefarious activities of the terrorists and the killings are not being reported. Many of our colleagues have abandoned the driving job. The gunmen mostly attack drivers on some routes that have few or no security personnel.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ikenga Tochukwu, could not confirm the incidents, saying the details were sketchy.

He said the command would talk about the incidents when they receive a clear picture of what transpired.

However, a senior police officer who did not want to be named confirmed the Isulo attack.

Communities shielding criminals’

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Echeng E. Echeng, Monday, accused communities in the state of shielding criminals in their midst. He stated this while briefing journalists on the murder of the Anambra State lawmaker, Okechukwu Okoye, and his aide, Cyril Chiegboka.

Daily Trust reports that the IPOB militants have vowed to kill more lawmakers in Anambra State.

The group issued the threat in a note allegedly found where the head of the lawmaker was dumped.

The commissioner said, “Some of us have come out to tag these people ‘unknown gunmen’ while in actual sense they are known. We are trying to mystify something that is not just there.

“It is high time we went into demystifying the tag ‘unknown gunmen’. They are not spirits; they are our brothers and they live with us in our communities. That is the obvious truth. We know who these people are.

“The problem the state security has is a total conspiracy of silence when nobody sees something, nobody says something and nobody hears something.

“Security is collective; everybody has a battle. The crimes are committed in our communities and we should be able to say this is what is happening in our communities.

“We are glorifying people that we know and tag them as unknown gunmen,” he said.

The police commissioner also debunked insinuations that Fulani were behind the attacks and killings in the state.

He said available information and records of arrests made in the state showed otherwise, accusing the communities of shielding the criminals in their midst.

Meanwhile, tension has heightened in Anambra State following the incessant killings of people by IPOB militants.

Hate campaign

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) said yesterday that it had taken stock of events unfolding in Nigeria, noting especially, the unrelenting disturbances created by certain interest groups in the South East, in the form of violent attacks on people of other sections, particularly the North.

Spokesman of the group, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, said in a statement that unprovoked evictions, attacks, killings, destructions of properties and other forms of violations against northerners in various parts of the South East had resulted from the hate campaigns and propaganda being conducted by regional and ethnic agitators.

“We are particularly disturbed by the reports of the brutal murder of a mother and her four children for the only sin of being northerners.

“These killings followed other coordinated attacks on northern traders and haulage trucks, killing some people and destroying millions worth of properties including the truck.

“We have watched and studied these events carefully and with considerable restraint and maturity, to the point of condoning and accommodating several unreasonable and unacceptable actions that have been perpetrated against Nigerians collectively, and northerners in particular.

“Everyone can see that the diabolical scheme planned and exhibited in the actions and clamours of IPOB/ESN terror groups are supported morally and politically by the vast majority of the pliant Igbo elites, politicians, traditional rulers, business persons, and the larger population of this ethnic group.

“It is also a situation that feeds on the docility of the affrighted section of those who pose as northern leaders today.

“The recent attacks have pushed matters to a point whereby silence has become complicit and inaction is no longer an option, making it impossible for us to remain indifferent or silent in the face of such extreme provocations.

“As the representatives of various interest groups from northern Nigeria, the CNG today declares enough is enough. The North will no longer remain passive under such deliberate and sustained attacks on its people and interests and will henceforth be forced to react to every provocation and unwarranted violation,” he said.

The group also cautioned media operators to be more restrained and balanced in their reporting of all situations in the country particularly when matters coming from or affecting northerners were reported or commented on.

“We caution them to desist from and to eschew the slanted reporting of events with greater bias against a particular religious and ethnic group as is witnessed in the reporting of security situations recently.

“We warn that editorial policies and restraints imposed by ordinary decency and sanity must not be abandoned by the media establishment for sensational and often biased reporting that only inflame tensions in the country,” the northern group said.

Meanwhile, many social media influencers in the North took to Twitter condemning the killings of the northerners by IPOB in the South East.

Senator Shehu Sani twitted: “You condemn ‘the murder’ in Sokoto but you don’t have the courage and the conscience to condemn the murderous activities of gunmen and unknown gunmen in your area (shokoto), including the slaughter of a legislator; that is hypocrisy and cowardice.”

Gimba Kakanda also tweeted: “Last week, you were in support of mob justice because it is perpetrated by your kinsmen. Today, you are hurt and against it because your kinsmen are the victims. And you are calling out Arewa to seek justice for Deborah, your silence on IPOB’s killings of “Hausa Muslims” is telling.

“Ahmed Musa Husaini speaks for me here in calling out the double standards of both sides of the Niger. The killings in Anambra, including the targeting of “Hausa Muslims,” are a tragedy that must be condemned by all. It also comes with a lesson to those who justify jungle justice.”

Jaybee @KhaleelJibreel said, “We should create our own media houses to publicise any atrocity meted to us. Stop crying foul, you are not expecting your staunch enemy to battle your insult or killing. If we don’t do the needful, this is how we will keep on staying on the defensive. North is not ready.”

Enforce anti-terrorism law in S/East – Expert

A security expert, Kabiru Adamu said to end the excesses in the South East, the legal status of IPOB and its armed wing, the ESN, is that of a terrorist group and therefore the people killing in that part of the country should be treated as such.

“I am therefore of the view that the government should apply the provisions of the National Counter-Terrorism Strategy (NACTEST) and the Terrorism Prevention Act 2022 fully on it.

“This should include using all the elements of Nigeria’s national powers to identify its membership, sponsorship, funding, and weapons supply channels and blocking them as well as arresting and prosecuting them. Only this full application of the law can contain the atrocities of the IPOB.

“To do this effectively, the government needs to enhance its intelligence gathering capabilities both human and technological to allow it to understand who are involved, what their interests are and why the involvement.

“Intelligence gathering will help clarify whether there are truly other gunmen groups behind the atrocities in South East or it is IPOB operating under the anonymity of “unknown gunmen”.

“Additionally, intelligence will allow government open back door channels of addressing the challenge but from a position of strength,” he said.

It is obvious that u are either a kid or does not know anything abt his administration. I don't blame u because those years access to information for people like u may be very low.

His administration was responsible for the set record of mess we are seeing today from various political assassinations that even military Govts couldn't record to stealing, fraud, grand corruption, Ghana must go sharing of money to abuse of constitutional laws. Obasanjo had less than N500k in his account and barren It's farm after coming out of prison but now he is worth about $4billion, among 7 richest Nigerians.

Imagine someone who singlehandedly stole power project worth $16billion those years (this is presidential project not under ministry of power) and asked us to check his book for the project that left us in darkness. He destroyed the relatively stable power that we used to have under military administration.

Where did he take the money of the privatised hundreds National assets?
He sold NITEL and left Buhari govt to initiate and start payment of their sacked staffs' pension and benefits after more than a decade of suffering.

There were more ethno-religious clashes under his administration than any other since our return to democracy. Jos, Onitsha, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, and OPC were the centre of clashes and killings throughout his administration. His govt supervised extra judicial killing of civilians in Zaki biam and Odi that we have never witnessed.

Judiciary was rendered useless with him having the audacity to sack Governors without following due process, he supervised impeachment of abt 10 Senate Presidents and Speakers in less than 8yrs.

He tried to impose third term on Nigerians to perpetuate life Presidency which failed after persistent effort.
He used EFCC as his political dog to threat, intimidat e and harrass his political opponents....

Politics2023 Presidency: Uncertainty Over South-East Quest, VP Slot by ArewaNorth(op): 8:12am On May 23, 2022
As the 2023 general elections gather momentum, the South-East appears not close to realizing its ambition of producing President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor or a Vice President.

It could be recalled that the National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the highest decision-making body of the party, had thrown the presidential ticket of the party open, despite the agitation by the South-East.

The region had hoped that the PDP would consider its loyalty to the party since 1999. The South-East has always voted for the PDP in all presidential elections. But the NEC’s decision may have foreclosed South-East presidential ambition.

In terms of political strength, the South-East aspirants are not as formidable as the other aspirants from other regions. Hence, there is the possibility that the region may have to settle for the VP slot.

There is one candidate who has moved across the country, Peter Obi. The former Governor of Anambra State has visited 35 States across the country and the FCT, excluding Adamawa, the home State of Atiku Abubakar.

On social media, Mr. Obi has been extremely popular, winning several polls conducted by different platforms. Over the weekend, some youths organized a million march for him across the country, with a simple message to the delegates in the PDP: “Give us Peter Obi.”

It is unclear how the march for Peter Obi will translate into delegate support, as some of the other candidates have gotten pledges from governors in some of the States.

Former Vice President Atiku appears to be the favourite; however, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has been pulling weight also. Wike continues to get support from the southwest, notably, Governor Seyi Makinde and Ayodele Fayose.

The inability of Obi and other South-East candidates to be the face of the “power must return to the south” campaign, has allowed Mr Wike to more or less plough his way through.

The decision of Obi not to visit delegates in Adamawa State, due to respect to Atiku, has once again raised the possibility of Obi settling for the VP slot, an easier route to presidency for both Obi and the South-East.

However, there are several challenges facing the possibility of a South-East VP ticket.

Ohanaeze’s threat of boycott…

One of such is the stance of Ohanaeze Ndigbo that anything short of a southern candidate will lead to the boycott of the 2023 general elections.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary-General of the apex Igbo group, in a statement published by DAILY POST, said “we will encourage the southern governors and social cultural groups to mobilize our people and boycott the 2023 general election in the south, especially in the South-East if northern candidates should emerge in APC and PDP.”

Unless the region should relax its stance after the party primary, this may foreclose the possibility of Vice President, considering that there is great uncertainty on election in the region due to the activities of IPOB/ESN in the region.

IPOB and insecurity…

Fear of killings by unknown gunmen or ESN could discourage people. Last month, gunmen attacked INEC ad hoc staff in Nkwo Ihitte Market, Imo State.

The insecurity with the resultant impact on voting capacity, may discourage the party from picking a running mate from the South-East. The region has the least voting strength in 2019 despite Peter Obi being on the ticket.

The PDP got 1.6 million votes in 2019 against about 403 thousand the ruling party got in that election. Hence, the number may not support the argument of picking a running mate from the South-East.

Control of PDP structure…

More so, Peter Obi is struggling to get control of the PDP in Anambra State. Doyin Okupe, an ally of the former Anambra State Governor accused the national leaders of manipulating the party.

“It is a matter of regret that despite Peter Obi’s gentlemanly civil disposition and unwavering commitment to the PDP as a party, some officials in the National Secretariat of the party don’t accord him the respect due to him as the leader of the party in Anambra,” he tweeted.

There is another factor highlighted by Okupe, which is money. According to Okupe, it will cost $10,000 per delegate at the convention. In the last PDP convention in Port Harcourt in 2019, most delegates went home with between $8000 & $10,000.

“This year, the figures are bound to be higher. The big spenders are prepared to go as far as $10,000 per delegate,” he tweeted.

Possible allegiance by candidates from South-south

In 2018, Governor Wike supported Aminu Tambuwal, but both of them are in the race for the PDP ticket. In the event of an alliance between those two, it could be a game changer. Also, an alliance between Emmanuel Udom and any candidate from the North is also a possibility. There is also rumour that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa may be interested in the VP slot.
