I believe it has ben dredged to the extent that big barges can sail in. FKO8 just informed us that JB's equipment and other hardwares have been all along ferried into Anambra from Warri via barges. This couldn't have happened without dredging. However, the Warri Onitsha channel still remains a shallow draught for ocean-going vessels. They'll still need to dredge more and equally embark on maintenance dredging for these sea farers to come in.
Now, for big barges, yes.
well if jb has taken the initiative to buy barges so be it..

This is a business opportunity indigenous Nigerian business men failed to take. GEJ administration begged them to invest in barges to ferry cargos to Onitsha but they kind of chickened out. Now, Julius Berger, not only is floating a maritime fleet to sail around the world and berth at Warri. I'm sure they will equally float barges to discharge at Onitsha, Lokoja and Baro. What a boom for them.
I think the issues is if that lower niger river has been actually dredged? And of the of course the maintenance issue...and this warri port functional thing is more of a recent phenomenon

That notwithstanding, a functioning Warri port is strategic to the North's long desire to have a thriving Riverport at Baro near Abuja. This is to complete Abuja's status as a maritime corridor. Don't forget that was one of Yar'adua's cardinal objectives. This can't happen without Warri or even Onitsha ports. It is a win win situation.
not only baro but lokoja

Nigeria lacks maintenance culture. Like the Tin Can island that constantly goes under maintenance dredging, that of Warri and all other channels that were dredged along the Niger should continue to be maintained as initially said.

Though I won't rule Ifeanyi out, but i doubt if this JB deal was cut within this short period of Buhari.

Onitsha to Warri is a motorable short distance of 170 km of which an importer at Onitsha or Nnewi could do a round trip in realtime.

The Warri-Onitsha bifurcation has been already dredged for big barges. I'm sure it's also on Julius Berger's strategic plan to ply that maritime corridor.

Their construction of the second Niger bridge has drawn the company's attention to the huge business potentials in the region. She dosen't want this one to escape her.
I don't understand jb role in all these though

@ChristeJames, I visited that Nsukka Building Material Market last year while in search of a truck to help convey some goods down to my hometown -- Enugwu Ezike. To my surprise I discovered a market that is larger, far more commodious, and of better design than the International Building Material Market in DeiDei Abuja which my kins have been part of from inception, and which I and the promoters have -- out of our ignorance, advertised as the country's largest. The people responsible deserve my pat on their backs but owing to the restrictions of the internet I can only pen them a bold dark-inked DAARU.
Also, you lads down there should initiate a campaign against the brazen assault on the natural 'selling points' of Nsukka. Folks should be made to understand that Nsukka is cool because it's green and so Nsukka must remain green if it's to remain cool. Those newly-erected blocks of flats and posh hotels may provide a 'moment of wow' before a discerning visitor, but such can't endure like the marvel that flows from the green rolling hills which they barefacedly trample upon.
Thanks, but more thanks to Spyder, Passion007, BuddahMonk, Unemadu, Basilio and others whom I have silently crushed on their contributions to this thread all these years.

"When a people unite in a single purpose, there is absolutely nothing they cannot achieve" - Gen 11:6

It pains me that even after 45 years, my people cannot still see the big picture and have not still realised this simple fact. True federalism is absolutely possible in Nigeria but there is only one way to it; the entire SE, SS and SW must unite in this single purpose and speak with one voice and you would watch in awe as the northern hegemony will be dismantled instantly.

A case study is the 2011 and 2015 election; the entire norhtern establishment was against GEJ in 2011 but even with their population and dominance, their candidat Buhari failed woefully with a 10million votes gap. But in 2015, the north had to align with the SW and we all know the result today.

The SW, SS and SE wants true federalism but we've never thought it wise to unite in this purpose. Instead everyday you see Igbos and Yorubas fighting senselessly while our real adversaries who have actually kept the nation backward smile away at our collective foolishness. I can assure you that even the north central minorities would be very happy to align with the south if the south puts up a good united fight for federalism. But after many years of praying and wishing for this unity in purpose, the recent development we have is the SE trying to hoodwink the SS to breakaway from Nigeria even whilst we strangely accuse and insult the SW of being the problem. undecided

Bro, please don't ever tell me the north is the reason why true federalism cannot be achieved, rather it is the foolishness of the south to unite in one goal that has kept us in this mess.
actually the north central voted more for gej than buhari in 2011 so the northern establishment wasn't all united then

It's baffling you forget that it was Aguiyi Ironsi that replaced federalism with a Unitary government, just the way it was an Igbo that orchestrated the first coup in Nigeria. You all need to take a moment and understand why you keep shouting blue murder after setting the tone to what in the long run would be injurious to your soul. The blame of this precarious system in Nigeria is the undoing of an Igbo and only the Igbo and not the Hausa should be solely held responsible for that.
and why hasn't that system being restored ever since igbos were not in central govt?

why?
fg is solely responsible for that...that is building a bridge that connects two states.
I think those of us from the se should stop seeing that 2nd niger bridge as something that benefits us alone..even if all the se states put there money together to build it what about delta state that a substantial amt of construction would be done? Have you heard about a state govt embarking on a project on another state before?akwa ibom did the akwa ibom axis of aba ikot ekpene expressway and told ochendo iberibe to do the abia part and he refused..so why didn't akwa ibom bulldoze their way and do the abia part since that road is a critical entry to akwa ibom state?what is delta State govt is not interested in commuting to the building of the bridge what then happens? why didn't Lagos build the fourth mainland bridge?why didn't Lagos build the whole of Lagos Ibadan expressway when we all know it is important to Lagos?

OP the only thing that will happen is what happened when Abuja was declared the federal capital territory. Who God as bless he as blessed. The Europe came in tru the south of Warri Calabar n Lagos, yet it stood out when no single Igbo lived there. When you do leave which is what I desire strongly for you Lagos will still stand. You can simply understand this by comparing Lagos port with every other ports along the West African coast. Lagos still stand out considering the unfriendly nature to business, traffic, terrible road network.

All you need to do is put your brain to work and understand that Lagos port will be servicing the entire South Western region, it would also be serving the entire Northern region while PH Warri Akwa Ibom and the rest port you listed will be serving the SE and SS. Work out the population and the business and do not forget if no drop of crude oil is produced in the Nigeria without Biafra the country was feeding on something for several years before the discovery of crude oil. You can keep arguing what is not but that nothing you do can or will disrupt biz activities in Lagos.
actually the north eastern and parts of the north central states are nearer ph and any incoming akwa ibom port than lagos
