some time i asked myself , though i lived abroad sharing another country with Nigeria nationality, I am always proud to be called a Nigerian but the same problem our forefathers has it still repeating itself at this new age. if you condemn abalaka for standing out as a fellow Nigerian to prove he has a cure to HIV and did not believed him.
Can i put it to you , have you got the virus and been to him for cure ? i am sure you will tell me,you know only your, friends whom has been their. OK the question is where is Dr Abalaka, some said in prison ,now silent, well at Sept 22nd 2009 , was in Ontario in Canada for one of the conferences, organised by Dr Alger Regan on prevention of the virus , But to my surprise was announced the name Dr Abalaka From west Africa (Nigeria), I was shocked and i do not know when i screamed. and here they presented him as one of the men who has closely discovered the ''HIV VACCINE'' , well try at once to be proud of your fellow country men and i am telling you the man lives now in Canada in all attempt to get close to him on that day after the conference proved avail, the body guards will not allow despite i told them i am half Nigerian. Well its up to u guys cos in some years from now , they might announce him as a Nigerian-Canadian citizen discover the cure to AIDS.
After all he not eating out of our national cake (oil)
We do it a lot in my village too. But as you say, the penalties in the north and SE for doing this are higher. Maybe it doesn't hurt us in the SW due to lower pop density? I'm not sure.
it has nothing to do with population density in the east.the soil there is quite porous or should i say poor in some cases (especially anambra and imo axis)

in the east it is either a land should used for farming, built(planned properly for drainage) or allow trees.no land should be left fallow without some ort of vegetation otherwise erosion will surface.

you need to see the soil texture there to know what it is like.

If electricity were 24/7, wouldn't less trees being chopped down and thus the desert be less able to encroach? I dunno, just a thought.

Long story short though, northerners need to stop chopping down trees.
it is a nationwide thing.it is just that the effect on the north(desert encroachment) is higher.the east also suffers from an effect(erosion)

Anyway, the way Nigeria was set up with the 3 individual regions, it sort of makes sense that you'd conspire to weaken your neighbor. It wasn't like Nigeria was founded with the leadership of each respective region as best friends undecided

Contrast this with the founding of the US, where the 13 colonies fought a war to gain independence and to a large extent the leadership was on the same page.
one of the reasons why colonial founded african subsaharan countries will always struggle.fighting itself.

I think you are really getting things mixed up here. Ofcourse if you do not love your place, it's in a way not loving yourself. You stand to lose a lot-your culture, language, values and all that.

Igbos love themselves, but an Igbo man does not love himself. Which is exactly the cause of his problems.
that is why i initially said the bolded

they did not have a empire like kingdoms that sort of engineerd 'cooperation'.what they had was simply clan or small village settings.even in this settings people competed with each other.nobody liked to be seen as a 'lazy person' or 'no achievement' oriented person.that was how it was in the olden days setting.everyone like to be associated with being succesful with one thing or the other.
check other ethnic groups that had the same precolonial style with the igbos and tell me you do not see the same thing.

let me also make this point because it seems lots of igbo guys are ignorant of these.

igbo people are not 'designed' to cooperate or 'love each other'.igbos have always being individualistic from time immemorial.they did not have a empire like kingdoms that sort of engineerd 'cooperation'.what they had was simply clan or small village settings.even in this settings people competed with each other.nobody liked to be seen as a 'lazy person' or 'no achievement' oriented person.that was how it was in the olden days setting.everyone like to be associated with being succesful with one thing or the other.

for guys that say 'igbos do not love one another' please if your relation says he wants to be shoe shiner or simply come to you everytime so that you will give him money pls when you decide to encourage him to do that let me know.

has anyone wondered why there were no igbo cities before the colonialists?

Exactly my point. An Igbo man means of livelihood puts him in the way of harm as far Nigeria is concerned. It purely a gamble, which could pay off tremendously or backfire horribly.
If Igbos can look the way of agriculture, or other means of income that could keep most at home, with just a little elsewhere, that will be clever.

Igbos have a comparative advantage in oil palm. A lot of industries are looking for this commodity, even spending a lot to import it from island nations. I wonder why Igbos are not looking into things like that.
same reason other cash crops in the country like cocoa, cotton.groundnuts cultivation and all worth are at low or negligible level.

excanny:
Basically, that's the truth.

In reality, such spreading of tentacles had always come with a difficult prize to pay- danger, envy, etc. They could change their means of livelihood gradually to that which could result in fewer Igbos venturing out.

Others aren't nations of 'shop keepers', and they haven't died off.

Underscoring his unpopularity, Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State was yesterday at the Enyimba Stadium, booed by the large crowd that thronged the sports complex for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential rally.

This was the second time the governor would be suffering such embarrassment in less than a year in the hands of Aba residents who were not happy that the city had suffered much deprivation under his administration.

The first of such humiliation was at the famous Christ the King Catholic Church (CKC), Aba, where Orji went sometime last year to address Catholic faithful who gathered to seek God’s intervention for the kidnap menace which ravaged the city until recently.

Orji was not only booed at the CKC premises, but was also pelted with sachet water. The Catholic Bishop of Aba Diocese saved the situation.
Perhaps buoyed by what he saw two weeks ago when some of his supporters organized a reception for him in Aba, the governor was made to carry a false sense of acceptability in the Enyimba city, but he was wrong.

Orji’s trouble started when the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan was addressing the crowd and mentioned the governor’s name, the crowd responded in disapproval. Subsequently, as his name was mentioned, there were repeated thunderous shouts of “No! No! We don’t want him, we don’t want him.”

Then the governor was further embarrassed when he stepped forward to address the people. Hardly had he opened his mouth to say Aba Kwenu than, the crowd booed him relentlessly. Shouts of “we don’t need you! We don’t need you!! Come and build our roads, use Abia money to build our roads, most of the roads in Aba are bad,” rent the air.

Addressing the rally, President Goodluck Jonathan expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to the industrialization of Aba, adding that the first made in Nigeria aircraft would come from the city.
“The military of Nigeria and that of Brazil started about the same time, but Brazil started to manufacture aircraft about 10 years ago. I hope and pray to God that I will be alive to see the first aircraft manufactured in Nigeria and it should come from Aba. ”

He said with the Alaoji power plant in Aba, one of the biggest in the country billed to be completed before the middle of the year, the city which was captured in the vision 20 20-20 initiative of the Federal Government, would be one of the industrialized cities in the country. He promised to tackle the erosion menace, which had ravaged the South-east zone.

A revolution is in the offing in the auto industry. A 40 years old cane craft artist in Ibadan, Oyo State, has just made a delivery of car, whose accessories were made of canes. Obaniyi Ojo, who said he has been in the business of cane craft for 20 years, told Daily Sun, that his motive was to prove two points about the ingenuity of the Black Race. Code-named Basket Car, Ojo said:

“I want to prove a point that it is not only the educated elite that can make positive change in the society. We, the artisans also have talents to effect a change and make positive impact in the society. “That is why I decided that I too must do something that will make people to recognize me and know me across the whole world and by extension prove to the world that African and indeed the entire Black Race have very talented people.”

A secondary school certificate holder from Oke-Bola Comprehensive High School, Ibadan, Ojo gave a background of how he came about his project and the commitment he injected into it.
“I have been having the vision for a very long time. It is my own contribution to the development of Nigeria and Africa in general. I built the car from the beginning. I first bought the chassis I approached an engineer and invited a panel beater; I told them of my plan and later showed them my diagram. I had already done the sketches and I tasked them to contribute their own ideas.

“The first set we built was not that strong and solid, which made us to condemn it. We decided to use iron materials in-between the canes as protector so as to avoid any injury in case of any unexpected happenings. “The roof was made of canes but with iron protector within to prevent the occupants from being soaked during rainy season. It took me a long time to construct the car. I spent about seven years on the car. As I was building it, I was also condemning it till I got it right.”

Speaking about the open back of the car, Ojo stated that he decided to leave it open as a statement of fashion and to suit the purpose he was targeted. He planned to donate the car for the electioneering of the former governor of Oyo State, Senator Rasidi Ladoja. “I just hope to present the car as a gift to Senator Ladoja as my own mark of appreciation of his astute leadership and prudent management of public money while in office and as a contribution to his anticipated second coming.

“I am still working on another one, which I want him to use for his campaign tours. I have been in the business of cane craft since the last 20 years and I assure you the second will be better than this.”
He called on the Federal Government to tap the job opportunities in the cane craft business to address unemployment in the country, saying it requires only six month for any intelligent person to grasp the art:
“My vision is to engage the jobless youths in the society. I wish the federal Government can establish a job centre about one or two plots where jobless youths, who always surface at political rallies, can be trained and empowered.

“After campaigns, these youths have nothing else to do but I can train them and within six months, they will be on their own. They will be able to use canes to make all kinds of chairs, table and other household.” Ojo, however lamented that the vehicle licensing office has refused to recognize his ingenuity by declining him a vehicle license for his cane car and failed to issue him the necessary particulars as required of a vehicle owner:

“I have gone to the licensing office for the necessary papers and documents for the car but they told me they have no provision for ‘Cane Vehicle’ in the law that set them up. So, anytime I am stopped by the police, I would tell them to approach the licensing office and prove my claim.”

Ask him to give the name and model of his car, he smiled: “It is Obaniyi Cane Car (OCC)’. cheesy
Ojo gave assurance of the strength of his car, saying that apart from the fact that it could conveniently convey eight passengers, he had traveled with it to and from Lagos once without any hitch.

I thank God we still have a country call Nigeria, says Obasanjo

Sokoto – Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stressed the need for Nigerians to be united in spite of their cultural , religious and ethnic differences.

Obasanjo at the flag off of the second term re-election bid of the Sokoto Governor Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, said the nation must manage its diversity well.

The former president urged Nigerians to elect a leader who would be able to provide stability and visionary leadership.

`We should not vote on the basis of religion or sectionalism but on the basis of the present need of the country,’’ he said.

Obasanjo expressed delight that the country had continued to remain united , adding: “I thank God that we still have a country we can call Nigeria undiminished .’’

He stressed the need to improve security while tackling unemployment , poverty and poor infrastructure.

The former president also commended Wamakko for transforming the state in the last four years.

“ I have never seen a crowd like this in my life. Sokoto is a historic city in Nigeria with a special place among all the cities in Nigeria, ” he said.

He called on the people of the state to give their mandate to Wamakko again in the forthcoming polls, assuring them that he would not fail.

Also speaking at the rally, Transport Minister Yusuf Suleiman urged the people to vote for Wamakko to ensure continuity.

`PDP has come to stay in Sokoto and we will continue to do all that we can to promote the growth of our state,’’ he said.

He also called on party supporters to guard their votes and shun all forms of violence.

Suleiman said the state government had taken steps to provide a level-playing field for candidates.

He called for political tolerance and understanding to sustain the peace in the state. (NAN)
