Yes I am sure. Onitsha's problem is mainly infrastructure management, eg electricity and transportation planning issues.
I am an Onitsha boy because I spent most of my young life in Onitsha. Even the four story buildings are not planned to accomodate more than 2 flats per floor. In normal circumstances, it should be at least 4 flats per floor. Fortunately, Onitsha has one of the best planned layout system in Eastern Nigeria. If you don't believe me, take a look with Google satellite view. So, even with current space (without spreading out), Onitsha can still accommodate double its current population if properly densified.

But my hope is really on the undeveloped Iyi Owa Odekpe side.
I didn't even know that Anambra state borders Rivers state directly till now and there is a forest reserve there too. Just take a look.  cool
i have seen that place but is that place not under ogbaru lga?

Of course it can! Have you taken a look at the map of Anambra state, specifically to the south bordering Rivers state? I didn't even know there is a forest reserve in Anambra state, toward "iyi owa Odekpe" and Osomari ? Also Onitsha is yet to be properly densified. Fegge is still mainly low density. Onitsha is still small.
as you sure of what you are writing here?

I believe that the dredging of the lower Niger has been completed already. I read somewhere that if this route is not put into use soon enough, the river will silt up again and need another dredging.
These cranes are part of that effort, I believe.
however on a more serious note do you think onitsha as it is can withstand the increased economic activities that will that will occur as a result of this?onitsha is already conjested.

I'm really imagining what would happen if this port becomes fully operational.
Envision Onitsha port, with an Asaba airport just across the river Niger! shocked

Imagine if goods can land almost directly to Anambra state! If that oil and gas industry takes off, and we get that independent power station, now throw in a governor like Soludo in 2014; Nna mehn Anambra would explode overnight with business.

When Peter Obi's term ends in 2014, we replace him with Soludo! cool

Okay. I see what you're getting at now. So do you think that that standard short term disadvantage would last "long term"?
that is my fear.if infrastructures(of course light important here) were good then it will certainly be short term as industriousness of the people will help them adapt quickly but knowing how abia is now(anybody that lives there or knows there well will tell you)with dearth of infrastructure and quite frankly no real hope that orji will do much the it tends towards longer term.benefits as you know from govt is out of the question.

ChinenyeN:
Oh okay. Well, I see how that's possible, especially if said dialect is spoken by a small group of people.
dissappearance of dialects would still have occured as increasing socialization of different clans or groups occured coupled with 'invasion of english'.

ChinenyeN:
These are all standard short-term disadvantages, that I fully expect.
in a normal society yes.nothing normal about nigeria.

ChinenyeN:
Wait, what do you mean by excuse? An excuse for what?
excuse='standardized igbo' led to demise of dialects.sounds hilarious to me.
Politics › Re: XXXXX by asha80(m): 11:39pm On Sep 15, 2011
ChinenyeN:
How is it not that simple? It need not get any more complicated than that.
let me tell you why it is not simple(not in execution but effects)

if every abian working in other states government institutions is evicted by their present states do you know large  the population coming back to seek job from the abia government would be like(ie for those that would want to come back)

remember there are those already living in abia that would be eager to fill the spaces left by the outgoing non indigines.so where would be the additional jobs to take care of the returning abians come from?from the the sky?those that would eventually not be absorbed( and this will having if the above scenario occurs)what would become of their fate?

you think they would be jolly at this scenario just because they are 'back in their state'?

source of income is crucial in life guy especially in nigeria.nigerian society and economy has no mercy.not to talk of addition of more crimes to the society.

ChinenyeN:
It's been documented. One group from Anambra, close to Onitsha is said to have nearly lost their dialect, or have already lost it. The people's name has an N and a J in it. . if I remember correctly. Let me go and search for the document.
i always find that excuse as trash.go to owerri where i lived for long an owerri guy always spoke the famous uratta dialect to another owerri person whenever they meet.hardy if ever you hear 'standardized igbo' by both people unless english now enters.this is despite the fact the large parts of owerri is cosmopolitan.even non owerri people speak uratta because they have stayed there.

if an oru man decides not to speak his dialect to his fellow oru man how is that the fault of 'standardized igbo'?is anyone putting a gun to his head not to do so?

ChinenyeN:
I really don't get what the problem is here. If non-Abians get deported, then you in other states deport Abians. Simple. Na wahala? undecided
not as simple as that

and abagworo saying some igbo clans lost their dialect because of 'standardization of igbo' i cannot remember anything more laughable

Naturally. I agree. I remember when I was younger and I would be told stories of community development projects, when village-groups erected local schools, or when families provided communal plots to build this or that center. I don't hear those stories anymore. I barely even hear word of community development/benefit programs. Instead, it's all been replaced with pictures of the deplorable state of Aba, and that isn't right. Development is the most important thing.
the peak of those things were in 50s,60s,70, and 80s but from 90s it started deteriorating.

do not get me wrong i do not have any issue with discussions of history and culture of different villages and towns BUT to me upliftment or development(especially defined one) is what i see as priority for now.

it does not make sense to me that someone will be boasting about coming from a place and bragging about it but if you visit you begin to wonder if this is the place noise is being made of.

maybe i am too forward looking.

very funny topic.just reminds me what i witnessed at ABC transport haulage treminal in march where a bini guy was shouting to high heavens that he hates igbos.the guy was just pacing up and down the area where one pays fees for haulage.

shocked at the blatant outburst (as i just came in there when the guy was ranting)i asked a guy there why the bini guy was shouting only to find out that it was because ABC staff refused to give him discount on his goods moving from lagos to benin.he included the fact that ABC has a terminal at benin so he was expecting a discount.

i guess because of this i should hate every bini person?such shallow thinking.

Yes, its DPP, but ACN is extremely desperate to add an oil producing state as another cash cow in addition to Lagos.
It is their primitive ethnically bigoted style to attempt to lure the Itsekiri into their trap and reap the state to pieces ethnically, then stroll in to pick up whatever pieces they can gather.

Its better to convince people in a civilised way, than to cause strife in a state where the people have learnt to get along.

Gunmen kidnap FUTA lecturer
On September 11, 2011 · In News

BY DAYO JOHNSON

A lecturer in the Department of Meteorology of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, Dr Tunji Akinlabi, has been kidnapped by gunmen numbering about six.

Consequently, the abductors, youths between the ages of twenty and twenty five, have demanded for N15m ransom from the family of the lecturer.

Akinlabi was reportedly kidnapped late on Friday as he was about driving to his residence located at his Stateline-Aule Road.

The kidnappers had telephoned his wife 12 hours after he was abducted and warned against involving the police or any security agency.

His shout for help, according to sources, proved abortive as the gunmen shot sporadically to scare his neighbours as he was bundled into his Toyota Serena car and driven away to an unknown destination.

The vice-chancellor, Professor Adebisi Balogun, and other principal officers of the university have visited the residence of Akinlabi, expressing shock at the development.

Speaking on the development, FUTA, Deputy Registrar, Information and Protocol, Omololu Adegbenro, described the kidnap as worrisome and unfortunate.

The relations of Mr. Rodney Ogaba, a businessman who was abducted by armed men last Saturday in Lagos, will have to cough up the sum of N100m in exchange for his freedom.

The kidnappers had delayed till 1 am on Thursday before demanding the sum from members of his family and friends to secure his release.

Ogaba was kidnapped at about 4 am outside the entrance of upscale housing estate, MKO Abiola Gardens, while returning from a popular night club in Ikeja.

He was said to be in company with Yaya Omosun, his friend and business partner, and a lady known as Belinda.

A relative of Yaya, who identified himself as Musa Omosun, told SATURDAY PUNCH via a telephone interview that Yaya had been receiving treatment for shock at an undisclosed hospital in Ikeja.

He said, “Yaya was discharged on Thursday. He was treated for shock since the incident occurred. When Ogaba’s abductors made their demands early on Thursday morning, my mother and two other members of our family were present.

“It was Ogaba himself that made the call. Perhaps his abductors didn’t want to use their own phones. Throughout the brief conversation, it was clear that he was being held hostage. No mention was made of when and where the money is to be paid.”

Omosun narrated how four unmasked men, who were armed with sophisticated weapons, had tailed Ogaba to the MKO Abiola Gardens before they forced him and the lady out of his car at gun point.

He said, “Yaya told us that when they were returning from the club, no other vehicle followed them. But as they approached the MKO Abiola Gardens, they noticed a car tailing them and it seemed to have come from nowhere.

“He said the passengers in the car had shot sporadically into the air and ordered them to stop, saying they were policemen.

“Yaya said he had doubted their claim. He had reasoned that real policemen wouldn’t have shot in the air in order to stop them.

“Yaya, who was driving, had tried to get into the MKO Abiola estate, but, unfortunately, the gate was locked. By the time he tried to reverse the car, the kidnappers had caught up with them and blocked their way.”

The kidnappers, according to Yaya, had jumped out of their own vehicle, which was a Nissan car, and immediately shot the tyres of Ogaba’s vehicle, which was a Hummer jeep.

The gunmen had ordered Ogaba and his female companion to enter their car and they drove off. Also, they took away their victims’ cell phones, money, and other valuables.

The incident was initially reported at the Alausa Police Station before it was transferred to the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations officer, Deputy Superintendent Samuel Jinadu, could not confirm the incident when SATURDAY PUNCH contacted him for his reaction. He did not respond to the telephone calls and text messages from our correspondent at the time of going to the press.
