What MAXSIOLLUN actually stated was that Largema was killed when he arrived in Lagos to prevent him passing on the message. The facts are that he wasn't killed when he arrived in Lagos. Fact - He attended a party with the recipient of his message as well as his killers. Those are the facts.

It is possible that he did not pass on the message but why kill only the messenger and the sender; why not kill the recipient as well?
what PROOF do you have that ironsi actually got the message?is their a need to kill the supposed recipient if the recipent did not get the message/

since you are now dealing with scenario what if ifeajuna was aware that the message has NOT YET being deliverd to ironsi?

why add the extra burden of killing ironsi for something he is NOT yet aware about?

Perhaps but how can anyone be certain the he did not pass the message on at the party? The point I am making is that if Largema was killed to prevent him passing a message to Largema why was Ironsi not killed if Ifeajuna (and some other plotters), Ironsi, and Largema were all at the same party? That way, you are sure to neutralise the objective of the message instead of assuming that Largema was waiting for a better time to pass the message.
why would they kill ironsi if ironsi is NOT aware of the message that is being sent to him?or are you trying to say that ironsi already knows that a message was to be delivered to him?what logic is that?

Asha 80

Try to be objective

Ifeajuna who killed Largema was at the same party. Surely, why would anyone think that Largema did not give the message to Ironsi at the party? Largema was not killed when he arrived in Lagos; Largema attended a party before he was killed. Or was the party not in Lagos?

Why are some of you so selective with facts before you? I am out for now.
what you said above is not a fact but a scenario you have painted that is likely but not an outright fact.

the fact is that it written there that largema was killed before he could give the message to ironsi.unless you can bring out another fact or a written account that he actually gave the message to ironsi before he was killed then i am not inclined to believe whatever scenario you try to paint.after all you are the one that is always saying anything relating to this coup that anyone wants to prove as fact MUST be backed by evidence and not scenario painting.

no need leaving.bring out a fact or written evidence that he actually gave the message to ironsi.

Katsumoto:
You have to put the blame on the individual who actually set the precedence. I agree that other leaders adopted unitary governments but that objective was made possible by Ironsi's move. Soldiers have no business determining the type and systems of governments. That is beyond their training.

How is it possible that the plotters stopped Largema from passing the sardauna's message to Ironsi when Ironsi and Largema were both at Maimalari's party on January 14 before the coup took place. What stopped Largema from passing the message at the party. This is very evident from your book, 'oil, politics, and violence: Nigeria ,  - Chapter 4.

Secondly, why is it that the plotters killed the sender (Sardauna) and the messenger (Largema) but not the recipient of the message (Ironsi)? Afterall, it is the recipient who will carry out the instructions detailed in the message. I think the answer to that is very obvious.
maxsiollun:
To answer some of the questions:

1) Let's not pretend that Ironsi's "unification decree" is any different from what other govts did. Every head of state from Murtala onwards operated govt in a fashion FAR more unitary than anything Ironsi did.

2) Ironsi was clearly (a) afraid for his life (b) not up to the job of running the country. The deliberate and circumspect manner in which he answered questions at that press conference should tell you that this was a man outside his comfort zone.

3) The Sardauna and PM were definitely planning something major to deal with the "Wild West".

4) Lt-Col Largema was actually despatched by the Sardauna to pass a message to Ironsi (about the Wild West). Ifeajuna and co prevented him from delivering the message when they shot him in his hotel when he arrived in Lagos.

I am thinking one of the biggest mistake Ironsi made was to murder Tafawaand Ahmadu Bello Balewa - he could simply have detained them under house arrest or similar , watching the video one can clearly conclude that Ironsi knew his days were numbered.

It is also sad that the NIgerian journalist interviewed was complained about issues in 1966 that are still ongoing today as write in Nigeria. They say one can deduce the future from past.

At this moment in time we have another Tafawa Balewa in GEJ weak, corrupt and inept , unable swim against tide to steer Nigeria from dangerous waters.

well they're all related. my grandfather as a part of 'eastern region'
im not.

i was born in america and grew up in nigeria, sure, but most of my little cousins were born and raised in Lagos Onitsha, Port, and over seas, so it's not really their 'state of origin' anymore, they don't originate from there.

That's why I point back to the seperation issue. there are igbos that are more at home in Ibadan then Yorubas that were born and raised in Abuja, so where do you get off calling on a westerner and the other an easterner.

I think asking state of origin is counter productive.
That's how we ferment this idea that a nigerian 'from' one region is less of a nigerian in another region. As if Kaduna and Sokoto aren't a part of my country as well.
tell that to the locals and to the nigerian constitution.nigeria is not US.

at least there is no seperation issue now.the poster has his own immediate issue that has nothing to do with seperation

Ikengawo:

This is a perfect example of why the whole 'seperation' postulate for nigerian's problems is outdated and not-so-smart.

Nigerians in 2011 are no longer village people but are expected to identify themselves as an immobile peg of their grandfathers hut.

Most nigerians i met outside of my own village are born in places like Lagos. I know a guy thats half igbo half hausa and part fulani born and raise in Warri.

All he knows is Warri. So how can you call him a northerner or igbo? dude is just nigerian.

I met an Eshan girl that's half igbo but grew up in Ibadan and speaks Yoruba.

even P-square, igbo boys from Jos, Dbanj, Yoruba boy from Kaduna
this is more of a problem of state of origin,indigene/settler issue than outright seperation.

I don't think anyone can tell us how long it will take to provide ALL THE AMENITIES. Anyone who does that is only BLOWING HOT AIR UP YOUR ARSE.

Two things I don't care about. I don't give a darn if he is from a minority group or not, and I really don't care if he will run in 2015 or not. So, all that does not help convince me or many out there.

Jonathan DID NOT make the promise to provide stable electricity in his first term. Don't now lie to us on his behalf . .  lol. He hasn't actually created the atmosphere YET. As I recall, that is to happen, sometime in June of this year, so let's not get ahead of ourselves please.

How did you come to the claim that our image has improved worldwide? You mean securitywise? Investment? How exactly?

What minority? Jonathan is from the Majority Party that has ruled for the past 12 years. Sure, we want personality and so far, this personality has, show he is not really up to the task considering in over a year( starting as AP, and then moving on to Presidency), his term is likely not going to be much different from what he gave us when he served as Governor.

I disagree with your assertion that it will take Buhari more than one term to have excellent reforms. That is a false claim since it is not based on anything but mainly your bias here. Reform shouldn't take a more than a whole term for anyone who seriously wants to turn things around in Nigeria. If anything, his past example shows it probably will not take him that long since, within six months of the Buhari-Idiaghon regime taking office, average Nigerians were affected by change made by the regime in one way or the other.
you are comparing a military regime where everything is done by fiat to what we have now?

UK have oil and gas reserves, and have been in production for a long time

The UK have strong companies like BAE, the defence & industrial company that supplies one of the most sophisticated engineering components of many modern military aircraft with parts, from US to China, Rolls Royce, with more than 50% of aircrafts flying using their engines, EPL (generating £12billion pounds of revenue curtesy of suckers all over the world), the shipyard in Glasgow- home to many ships and submarines in the international waters, Cholchester Machines, the manufacturers of machines tools (lathe machines, milling machines, drilling machines etc) and owners of the patent. So any machine part produced everywhere in the world, from US to China, pays some licencess fees to the company.

The UK sell mostly advance technologies to industrial power houses, not to individual, that is why we don't see their products in the market.

How teenagers with $9.7m were arrested at MMA’ Suspects moved to Abuja
News Feb 5, 2011

By Jimoh Babatunde and Daniel Eteghe
Following the arrest of two teenagers at the old domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, on Thursday night , shortly after arriving with $9.7m, 664,100 euro aboard an Arik Air flight from Kano, a senior police officer has called for community policing.

Narrating how the teenagers, identified as Abdul Bashir and Rabiu Bashir, were arrested, the officer, who pleaded for anonymity said, “I believe if the people, in the spirit of community policing, give information to the police, crime will be reduced to its barest minimum.”

The officer at the Murtala Muhammed domestic airport police station disclosed that the suspects were arrested at the MMA2. “Men of the Nigerian Air Force got to the scene of arrest first. The boys were found out when one of them cried out that his money had been tampered with.

He said $50, 000 had been removed from his money. That drew the attention of people, the security and they were arrested and detained at the police station.”

He said since they were northerners and claimed to be bureau de change operators, the police invited some bureau de change people who witnessed the counting of the money. “ The bureau de change people came here. They helped in the counting of the money because it was so huge and we couldn’t do it alone. They were in four big bags.”

Explaining how the case was transferred to Abuja on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, the officer said,

“When they were brought in, the DPO got an IPO to take their statements. I didn’t go through the statements; so I cannot comment on that.”

The source added, “We didn’t sleep that day. Upon their arrest, the DPO contacted the commissioner in charge of the Airport Command who in turn informed the Inspector General of Police. The IG then ordered that the case be transferred to the antifraud unit of the Force CID in Abuja.

“The police commissioner, anti fraud unit came in from Abuja following the Inspector General’s order to take over the case. They were taken to Abuja yesterday (Friday).”

I think this issue is prevalent only around Onitsha axis.Nkpor,Obosi,Oba and Nkwellezunka don't really have land dispute with Onitsha but issue of recognition. You cannot build a house in Nkpor and write your address as Onitsha. They prefer being recognised as separate towns even though they form one urban area.

The case in Aba is very different because all the towns around are Ngwa and accepted the name.Ehere,Ariaria,Umuola,Osisioma,Uratta,Alaoji,Ovom and Ekeakpara are all different towns in different LGAs that got assimilated but accepted Aba.

A very good question!

Shango, I have observed your responses to serious issues like this one and I admit I like your well thought out responses to them.  Keep it up!

In my own response I will piggyback on Shango's response and add that the end of colonialism did not end our exploitation by Europeans.  When they were in control of Africa they sealed treaties that bind ownership of our resources to their sovereign lands - England, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy and so on. . .

When we gained independence, our government could have ended and nulled these treaties but did not do so.  Regime after regime, military and civilians, we continue to honor and uphold those bad treaties that siphon the royalties and gains of our natural resources away from our control and ownership to the pockets of foreigners in England.

it is really painful, that is why if u go to east u will find large expanse of undeveloped lands because the owners can't develope it but will not sale it to those that will develop them,

every community in igbo land wants to exercise its autonomy which is a barrier to development and urbanization/industrialization.

in Geography, there is what is called conurbation which means-- a large urban area created when neighboring towns spread into and merge with each other.

so it will be a crime if nkwelle becomes a surpub of onitsha?
so many popular cities in the world were created by merging smaller towns, that's how lagos and ebute-emeta were merged and lagos is now a big city and ebute-emeta still maintain its name and autonomy

i always wish that one day in future, the type of development that will happen in igbo land will be like such, drive from umuahia to aba to owerre without seeing undeveloped lands, drive from orlu to okigwe to oguta to oowerrre without seeing undeveloped lands the same thing with ornisha to awka to nnewi, nsukka to enugu to nkanu to agbani and abakaliki to afikpo to asaba and agbor without seeing undeveloped land rather what u will see is bautiful and well planed big magnificent edifice,

The member representing Anambra West in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mike Ofor has warned that anybody caught harassing contractors in the local government will be dealt with. Mr Offor said this yesterday at Aguleri, a community in Anambra West local council while meeting with traditional rulers from the area. He said he will support the killing of any member of his constituency who hinders the work of contractors handling road construction in the area.

Mr Offor was unhappy with some people in the area who he claimed engaged in sending threatening text messages to contractors and making monetary demands rather than commending the governor for bringing development to their domain.

“I’m ashamed and all sons of the local government should be ashamed that after Governor Peter Obi has awarded the Umuezeanam-Nmiata road and persuaded the federal government through countless letters and visits to Abuja that resulted in the award of the Umuezeanam-Kogi road, what some senseless miscreants only did was to disturb the contractors,” Mr Offor said.

“The governor behaves towards our local government as if he was previously from our place before he reincarnated as an Agulu man, by doing for us what nobody has done before. In spite of the heavy development of the area in the form of roads, hospitals, rehabilitation and building of schools, among others, he remains the only governor since Anambra State was created to have visited the area not once, by countless times. Is disturbing contractors the way to repay him for his goodness to us,” he asked.

The Anglican Bishop of Mbamili, Henry Okeke, Sylvester Nonso, Igwe of Ifite-Anam and others present at the meeting agreed with Mr Offor and apologised to the governor while promising that the problem will be addressed henceforth. They appealed to parents in the area to caution their children

The governor is not Hausa or is he? how then is he watching Hausas kill his people if truly his people are innocent of shedding innocent blood?

Both parties are guilty, we should stop taking sides here, both of them have bad blood inside of them and are looking for opportunity to strike.

Don't be surprise if you end up finding out that the attack that was carried out at the village where the Soldiers were stationed must have been done by an insider just to indict the soldiers, and with that "blackmail", they can be made to leave so that those with bad blood can have access to hunt down their victims.

Let's be reasonable, both the Hausa and the beroms are guilty of murder, just that one's more deadly than the other.
i am not responding to who is clean or not on both sides.i am replying to your post on why their was protest against the soldiers.there has been suspicions about the soldiers actions for sometime until an incident inwhich the natives felt they saw an army inscrption os a scene on the attack on a village by the fulanis.

as for the bolded if your conjecture is true then it has be because the soldiers set themselves up for it.it is not as if the soldiers actions there have not been questionable in the minds of the natives.

also are the hausa/fulanis there daft enough to burn down a marcopolo bus carrying mainly igbo traders going to bauchi for whatever reason.can't they differenciate people?in the process making more enemies than necessary.

on another note if the country is not ready to jettison this indigene/settler issue in the country then forget about solving jos issues.
