[quote author=groovychik post=74762035]I told them upfront and was seriously drilled. I was asked 13 questions and as God would have it, I did not stutter at all, which is incredulous. I would post an advice I got on Nairaland from a wise man below, which really helped my confidence level. all the best...

First of all, accept the fact that the friend in question is you! I'll give you my experience so that you don't feel that you are alone. Others with a similar issue can also read this and note the tips.

I'm emotionally touched to respond to this question because I also have a similar issue and have somehow managed it.

You won't go wrong telling the VO about your speech issues before you start the interview. In fact, this step is recommended by one of the VO's here on nairaland. The benefit of this step is that it reduces your stress level and allows the VO to be patient with you. If you don't trust your fluency or you feel you may have moments of stuttering during your interview, I advise you follow this strategy.

The other strategy, which I used, is to rehearse very very well and know your words for every likely question. This strategy is different from cramming. Know your school, your program, everything about your application and rehearse them very very well. I rehearsed every day for one month before my interview. I drafted likely questions and gave to my nice friend who called me every day at a particular time for 3 rounds of interviews. It took less than 40 minutes each day for the interviews and the feedback. The friend knew my condition and suggested ways I could avoid some words or use synonyms where necessary. Another friend, who also knew about my condition, assisted with several rounds of physical mocks a few days to my interview. To practice my fluency, I volunteered to help other visa applicants with their mocks on the condition that they also give me mock interviews. So, I would do 3 rounds with them and they will do 3 rounds with me. These applicants did not know about my condition and even when I stuttered sometimes, it wasn't pronounced and they didn't notice. I used their interviews to get a feel of how the atmosphere will be when I'm interviewing with a total stranger like a VO. I think I had ~ 12 mocks with those visa applicants.

My strategy may be very hectic, but I did it because I hate being seen as an object of pity. So, if method 2 seems hectic for you, method 1 is totally fine. Just rehearse, relax and tell the VO about your issue. Then, speak without fear because 90% of stuttering is caused by the fear of stuttering, not even the stuttering itself.

Overall, being a stutterer is a very hard thing in our society. Just imagine the shame you'll feel when you have your moments while giving a speech in a packed gathering. Just be strong and keep pushing.

About my interview, I had two stuttering moments but I think the VO didn't notice because I paused, took a deep breath and continued. She may probably be thinking that "E be like say this boy don forget him script grin grin grin".

We still await your Transcript pls

[quote author=Tiwasmum post=74651701]Hi All,

I’m an Oldie, but Just came across this recently after reading thread 6 extensively and thought to share my own experience... Long Post though!!!!

Applied for Birth Visa with my hubby and son May 2014. Used Elpaso letter of recommendation for Visa interview(Original plan). Was scrutinized with severally questions by the VO who refused all that had gone before us that day.(transcript was sent 2014, under a different username)

We were granted the Visa(All glory to God!!!).. Travelled alone in August 2014 (@35 wks) with Emirates (I was upgraded to business class without any extra payments- Gods Grace!!) through Dallas as POE.

My POE was a breeze (To the Glory of God!!!) was only asked 1)- why I was here? I said to birth my 2nd child. 2)- How much I had? I answered 7k dollars (cash) 3)- my final destination? I answered Phoenix Arizona(I was scared at this point) ...I was let through. No secondary inspection( I was running off to get get my bags and get out of the airport cos I felt I might be called back. But luckily.. I wasn’t!! (All glory to God)

Registered at MIHS early..Had a wonderful experience with them.. applied for al necessary documents and left the in exactly 4 weeks after birth. I don’t take al this for granted cos I was fully aware it was Gods grace.

I used my visa twice after that.. applied for Visit Visa(drop box) with my family in 2016. My DH & Son(1st child) were given as I was invited for a follow up interview. I appeared and was only asked one question. Where will you be traveling to? I answered New York on a family holiday. I was told to collect my visa in 3 days which I did. Travelled with visa severally. Visa expired July 2018.. Applied again for a Visit Visa (drop box) with my Family, but we were given the 221G interview letter. we didn’t get an available interview date till October 2018. We appeared were asked for our itemized bills. I gave the VO my MIHS contract where it states if I pay the specified now I would pay $2,888 with refund afterwards for vaginal delivery. Also took

Ahaa, this is encouraging. Congratulations I tap into this ur Testimony. Was ur Interview @Lagos or Abuja?

Visa approved today. I have been a silent follower and this forum actually helped put me through all the steps needed.

Appointment was for 6.30am I was 8 in line but second to be interviewed by the white guy in window 3. The lady before me who was a Medical Doctor going for MPH also got her student visa approved. Every other window I observed were busy dishing out blue papers mostly to students.

I noticed the VO that interviewed me took his time interviewing the lady with student visa before approving her unlike others.

My transcript

VO: Why are you going to the US
Me: I am going for the initial convening of the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity program.

VO: Tell me about this fellowship
Me: It's a non residential fellowship for a year with 3 physical convenings in Us and Rwanda. It trains global leaders and professionals working in diverse areas to foster health equity.

VO: How would this benefit you?
Me: I work for an organization that provides free oral healthcare to the less privileged. This will enable me learn from leaders in health equity how to build a more sustainable health organization, the mentoring and online courses is also an added advantage since it will put me through organizing different community projects.

VO: This organization you work for provides only free dental care. (He didn't ask for the name)
Me: Yes, I am a Dentist

VO: And you founded this organization
Me: Yes I did

VO: Kept typing for a long time, I guess he was searching for my organization. He apologized for taking too long that the system was loading.
Me: No problem

VO: Have you been outside Nigeria before?
Me: Yes, I had my degree in Ukraine, went to Slovakia in 2009, Uk 2012, Ghana 2016

VO: What were you doing in Slovakia?
Me: Clinical elective/rotation

VO: Uk?
Me: Visiting family

VO: Ok, your visa has been approved.....
Me: Thanks

He didn't ask if I was married or had children, also didn't ask how much I earned and all. No documents were requested.

Thanks everyone.

Congratulations atleast this is encouraging.

My wife is in the same 221g ish, but we planned her travel for March, 2019 but the earliest follow up interview date was 28th May 2019.
To the house, what can we do in this case?

I am yet to pick up a date for my follow up Interview, though on my Profile, I can see Dec/Jan available interview dates.

I completed that of my daughter earlier but didn't submit, hoping to submit the three together when completed. But NOW I can't access my daughters page any more seems I must have left it unattended to for 30days which am not even sure. The page keeps bringing Error Not found upon inputting her ID No. And

Thanks to everyone who has made valuable contributions here. I had my interview today and visa was approved. Interview was short but the VO took his time to go through my documents. I have never travelled before. Applied earlier with my family but was refused on the grounds of no strong ties to return back. I applied again but alone and visa was approved. God was truly involved cos it could only have been possible with him.

Congratulations.

Some VOs might request but insist on your receipt and zero balance. Most VOs are not well informed and start asking unnecessary deep questions that may land you into hot Yoruba pepper soup!
The aproko details on that long thing might put you on a long thing as it did me. My visa application was put on hold for some verification. During this time I had some family stuffs and couldn't get back in time with the info. When I did, a few months had passed and I sent by email (meanwhile the US embassy doesn't open anything that contains an attachment).

Hello house, pls I need some clarification.
For the notarized form, does DH need to go to U.S embassy in Naija even after meeting a lawyer to sign and stamp the form? Someone asked him to go 2 d embassy with an electronic copy of d baby's BC (saying that was hw he did his own last yr). Some others are saying he shld just get a lawyer to sign and stamp and post it 2 me.
Pls which is correct?

P.S, i'm in Virginia so it will take @ least 2wks to get BC. So we can't wait dat long jst to start d notarization process plus d time it will take to mail it

Not any Lawyer, it must be a Notary Public.
