aestake: It's valid for 12 months according to IRCC regardless of what police put on it. Again you misunderstood me. The police certificate for the purpose of using it to apply to IRCC is 3 months, you have to use it within this time period. It literally says "Valid for three months from the date of issuance on the report". Again this is for the purpose of residency for Canada. I don't know about other nations. Upon receiving AOR, just like your language results are, the dates are "locked in". |

aestake: It's not true. What's written on it,is for the police. I think you're misunderstanding me. She asked for the validity, I said three months and it's locked at AOR. Even if her application is with IRCC for longer than three months, it's valid. |

aestake: 3months for IRCC or Nigerian police? For IRCC, I've only done for Canada so I can't say for other countries. It's written on the report. |

79733139: I think it is the demand-supply issue. Express Entry has started favouring French speakers and now, the demand for TEF/TCF has gone up. But, rather than buy more computer systems and employ more exam supervisors so that they can offer the exams to more people at the same price, it is easier for them to just hike the price and take advantage of Nigerians.
And also the whole japa thing has become a lot more popular, so organising TEF/TCF has become easy money for Alliance Française. You're right also! On the day I wrote, there were only 5 of us, for an exam that's written on average 5 times a month. I really wish we didn't take advantage of people this way. But c'est la vie. |

thelma76: It’s really bad. I googled the cost for this exam in CAD and it’s less than 380. Even at black market rates, that exam should never be that high (NGN700k) ! It’s pure extortion. I can’t stand Alliance Française That's not up to #500k! This is terrible. |

I have to move as quick as possible to get everything ready. Hahaha I understand. It was the same with me. No expectations whatsoever since I was preparing to take CELPIP and only had my french. Take it easy and make sure everything is aligned. It's better to submit late than early with mistakes. |

NuCypher: Nice one! Congrats! Well deserved. I'm always very happy seeing someone getting ITA with French. Never stop learning the language. It opens you to hundreds of job opportunities in Canada. In fact, for the simple job of tech support, for example, you get paid more if you speak French than if you speak only English.
Felicitations, ca vaut toujours la peine de savoir parler la langue en tant qu'immigrant au Canada. Ca donne beaucoup d'access aux opportunites, soit dans le travail, soit dans les amities. (Not added any accents to prevent spambot banning me, abeg) Ehn, na so una dey do? ... No accents abi... From today... |

thelma76: Jesus is lord! This is horrible! The exam is hard enough, imagine the anxiety that comes with knowing the price changes every market day. Something just pushed me to pay for mine on Monday and it was the fact that the dates were disappearing fast! The 456k was even super upsetting but I just had to close eye
This is really crazy. AF is just extorting people, because the percentage change in the exchange rates since Jan does not fully justify the change from 189k to 700k I saw it and didn't even know what to say. It's highly disappointing. Furthermore they believe Nigerians will say nothing, take it in stride and still struggle to raise the money. It's plain extortion. We need these bodies to charge naira rates for these exams, we don't earn in Euros. I saw a change.org petition for it today, dunno how much good it'll do but I did sign up. |

GraciousWords: 100%
I would also recommend www.linguee.com/english-french.
It doesn't only translate words but whole expressions and gives different alternatives from a variety of sources. Useful for EE and EO....fantastic stuff.
Using froid as an example:
adjective, masculine - cool adj, chilly adj, unemotional adj, clinical adj adjective, masculine [fig.] - distant adj [fig.] noun, masculine - coldness n
Used in context:
Le monde est devenu un endroit bien froid pour les dictateurs - The world has become a harsher place for dictators.
Il y faisait trop chaud l'été et trop froid l'hiver - It was too hot in summer and too cold in winter.
Je ne me suis jamais réveillée parce que j'avais froid. - I never woke up being cold at night. Both great advice. Definitely to learn vocabulary in context. In addition, repetition of those words/phrases is key. You may use traditional notebooks or an app like Deepl that allows you save searches(in French-English and vice versa) and play them back, and the AI sound player isn't too bad. Hearing those words out loud at different occasions allows the brain create neural pathways thereby engraving them. I believe this is called Spaced Repetition. |

79733139: If you are learning French without a tutor, I would advise that you study the book "French Grammar for Dummies by Véronique Mazet". It explains grammar in a way that a primary school pupil would understand, so by the time you move onto more comprehensive grammar books such as "Schaum's Outline for French Grammar by Mary E. Coffman Crocker" and "Ultimate French by Annie Heminway", you would be less confused and be able to understand grammar concepts easily.
I studied the book twice before moving onto "Schaum's Outline for French Grammar"
You can get the book by just doing a simple search on Google with keywords "french grammar for dummies free pdf download" Never used this but I enjoyed Easy French Step-by-step by Myrna Bell Rochester... We're incredibly lucky to have so many learning resources for French in this day and age... Imagine if Canada's second language was Tagalog or something... Ha! |

TimIron: For people who have passed TEF/TCF while maintaining a full-time job, what is a realistic time frame for someone like me who just started learning French around 3 months ago on Duolingo app?
@aurorae1 @79733139 @Popoola1527 Omo, this is hard to gauge as everyone and their circumstances are different. Personally, I don't rate Duolingo as an overly effective learning method on this TCF journey, especially for someone on a time crunch as most people learning are. To determined your level, you'd need to do a test of some sorts for the 4 competences and know where to go from there. I know you want a number, although that's not easy to give, as even full-time jobs demand time and energy differently. That said, have had some workers do it in 6, 7 and 8 months. It's all about the time and effort you can put in. I'd say aim for 6-8 months of intensive learning but do give yourself grace, it's not the easiest feat. |

I also have French grammar for dummies book. Good job TimIron. I know it's a challenge but I will forever advice a beginner to have a tutor, simply for the structure and added advantage of corrections. If you already do, that's great. Bonne continuation... |

BEYEIs: Ok, if it is higher, then I will just go for IELTS because they will just be about the same price.
And I will prefer IELTS because I am familiar with it, but I heard CELPIP is easier though. Yes it's higher. On the basis of familiarity, IELTS sounds more plausible. The price of IELTS increases from February though. |
