barcanista: let me start by saying that you are a shamless f0ol! Yes....when you spew nonsense online just to impress a few,it doesnt make you intelligent,it rather exposes your ignorance, you made a lot of noise about 'treasonable felony',am sure you are nt a legal practitioner,Nyako's letter was a clear case of treason,he was calling for genocide against the Igbos,he told the whole world that the president was sponsoring the Boko haram activities in the North-East so as to render the zone useless,he was virtually calling for a violent revolution and indirectly calling for a coup against the president.....incase you dont know,'treasonable felony',is charge against a person that has by his action directly or indirectly committed a crime that undermine's the government and equally as a government official an utmost disloyalty by virtue of subversive behaviour,so i think its better you allow the lawyers to do their Job and stop playing the victim.Let the defense counsel meet with 'all the presidents men'in court and lets see who's fingers is burnt. |
Yorubas and there many gods!I ve said times-without-number that Yorubas must institute a cultural re-orientation and desuade there youths from this believe in moribund traditions and rituals,For God sake this is 21st century and some people still believe that consulting Ogun,Oshogbo,Orisha,Sango and a host of ineffectual dieties can give them success in daily human endeavour,it is absurd and denigrates humanity, whatever culture practised in the south-west that does not uphold the sanctity of human life must immediately be jettisoned...God bless Nigeria. Btw why are some yoruba states bearing the name of dieties e.g Ogun and capital of Osun, known as Oshogbo etc!Religion as the constitution stated shld be seperated from 'state'!am proposing a change of name for these states and some one shld please notify south-west delegates at the on-going conference to do something about this. |
There are certainly topics that sounds funny, most informed Nigerians knows that Igbos are by far the largest ethnic group outside politics,Festus Odumegwu was relieved of his appointment as Census Board Chair, when he started making noise about adding ethnicity and religion to our census data. The old order felt threatened and asked for his head, that is a story for another day. Then bringing it home to even our own Nairaland,a state by state census was conducted on this forum and lo and behold,Anambra was the state with the highest population on Nairaland, followed strongly by Imo state and other Igbo igbo state didnt do badly!except someone will also have to postulate a theory that the reason the Igbo states topped the E-census was because we are more educated, adventurous, prosperous and more likely to have access to online forum. But less wait for the great day when ethnicity will appear in our census and only then,we will realise that truth is constant. God bless Nigeria.....Hausa-Fulani's wld ve been the largest ethnic group but for the fact that both do not belong to thesame ethnic group and when seperated, they are in-comparable to the Igbo ethnic group. |
I wonder what the fuss is all about!my state is better than yours,abi...Enugu was the capital of Anambra state and most development there were put in place by both Anambrarians and Enugu people,Anambra is relatively a new state however, I for once respects Chime for his Urban renewal program and achievement and wld ve done better if he had extended more to the rural Areas!just may be the next governor will take over from there but Anambra state is in a class of its own, when you talk about rural development,Anambra is not a one town or one city state,i guess is one part of Nigeria where some unknown towns can even contest for aesthetics, structures and serene organization with some capital cities in Nigeria!one can at the tip of his fingers mention about fifteen towns in Anambra that many Nigerians may find it had to believe that these areas where meant to be rural areas and yes Ngige and Obi contributed in these developments by way of accessable roads, but though developments in Anambra are also private driven. Obi also made it possible in Agriculture,Education,Health,Commerce and Investment etc....but am also very proud of great strides in other Eastern states,it makes me more proud and complete! God bless ndigbo! |
Yoritshekiri: Descendant of Awolowolike serious,is it true that Awolowo took suicide?i need an honest answer. |
Who will speak for the Northern minority christians? Why are other Nigerians turning a blind eye to the plight of these minority christians? When will the genocide against this group of people stop? Why do the Northern Muslim elites only care about this people only during election, when there votes are needed to make-up one 'monolithic north'? ...a novelist once said 'do not allow them take your brothers or neighbours in the daytime because at night they will come for you. The human right community and all good and patriotic Nigerians must speak out now or remain silent forever! |
How 258 Northern Christians Were Massacred In 7 Days Category: SPECIAL REPORTS Published on Monday, 30 June 2014 12:19 By Emeka Umeagbalasi (Onitsha Nigeria)*Christians at Risk in Northern Nigeria -The leadership of International Society for Civil Liberties & theRule of Law-Intersociety wishes to raise local and international alarm over coordinated efforts by Islamic jihadists operating under the platforms of “Boko Haram” and “Fulani Jihadists/herdsmen” to eliminate all Christian communities in northern Nigeria with a view at imposing the so called “Islamic Republic of Nigeria” or “Arewa Islamic Republic”. The ethno-religious cleansing campaigns launched in July 2009 are also targeted at forcing the federal governing authorities in the country to return the presidency to core northern Muslims. The likes of Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwamkwaso, Governor of Kano State, recently told the AFP that “the injustices meted out to northern Muslims by a Christian President fueled Boko Haram insurgency”. Other leading northern Muslim politicians have also not hidden their support and sponsorship of “Christian blood-for-northern presidency” campaigns. It is still a part of recorded history that the “Hausa Land” and a number of other neighboring principalities were conquered in early 19th century by a Fulani jihadist named “Shaihu Usman dan Fodio” (Usuman bii Foduye 1754-1817). As the leader of “Maliki School of Islam”, he later led a jihad that conquered strategic Hausa States starting from 1804 and became the Sultan of Sokoto from 1803 to 1815. The conquest led to forceful conversion of strategic Hausa areas to Islam and imposition of “Fulani Emirate Council” in all the Hausa States and their environs including Bornu, Ilorin and Adamawa. Till date, all heirs apparent to northern Muslim Emirates are drawn from the Fulani or Fulfulde populations. With the mixture of politics and Islam, the minority Fulani populations have ruled and continued to rule over the majority Hausa populations in the form of “politico-religious slave-masters and slaves”. On the other hand, a good number of minority tribes sharing boundaries with their Hausa neighbours were converted to Christianity particularly those that were not conquered and converted to Islam during the “Fulani Islamic Jihad”. These minority populations are today called “northern Christians”. Sadly, these same innocent populations are in a verge of being wiped out per ethno-religious cleansing. Mortuary overflows On 29th and 31st May as well as 6th and 7th of June, 2014, we wrote graphically grounded and expository four-part letter to President Goodluck Jonathan on Boko Haram terror and internal and external solution mechanisms available at his disposal. Part of the letter indicated that in 66 days (April to first week of June), Nigeria lost 1,296 innocent citizens to Boko Haram terror campaigns. Most of the causalities are northern Christians, followed by Igbo-Christians. Our recent checks have clearly indicated that between June 23 and June 29, 2014, a period of seven days, at least 258 citizens, mostly northern Christians, have been murdered by the Boko Haram and the Islamic Fulani terror sects. The number of Muslim victims in the attacks is too insignificant and accidental. The causality records showed that on June 23, at least eight citizens were killed in bomb explosion at the Kano State School of Health Technology. On June 19th and 20th June, 91 people including 60 married women and other young girls and children were reportedly abducted in Kumanza, Yaga and Dagu villages in Borno State. Though the Federal Government has denied the abduction saga but independent sources have stuck to their guns over the issue. refugee camp overflows with displaced persons On June 23, 40 rural Christians in Kabamu and Ankpong villages in Sanga LGA of Southern Kaduna State were massacred by the Islamic Fulani jihadists popularly called “Fulani Herdsmen”. On 24th June, over 123 innocent minority Christians of Kobrin, Dogon-Daji, Naidu, Kabamu, Hayin Kwanta, Kabani and Gani villages in the same Sanga LGA of Kaduna State, were butchered by the invading Islamic Fulani jihadists or “Fulani Herdsmen”. According to a local vigilante group leader quoted by various media, 38 were killed in Kobrin, 21 in Dogon-Daji, 30 in Kabamu, 16 in Naidu, 9 in Gani, 5 in Hayin Kwanta and 4 in Kabani. The Chairman of the Sanga LGA, Mr. Emmanuel Adamu also confirmed the causality figures on June 26, 2014 during the mass burial of 100 out of the over 163 deaths in an area between Gwantu Kumi and Kobin communities in the State. He added that others killed in the butchery have been retrieved by their loved ones for the purpose of giving them befitting burials and that those who were mass-buried were in a state of decomposition. On June 25th June, bomb exploded in the Kasuwan Kuturu Market in Mubi area of Adamawa State. The causality figures were not ascertained. www.elombah.com |
I dont know what to say,but the rate at which our south-west brothers are taking suicide these days is becoming alarming!May God have mercy on his soul,Amen. |

20,000 applicants defy downpour to write army recruitment exam in Calabaron July 06, 2014 at 12:56 am in News By Emma Una OVER20,000 applicants, yesterday, defied a downpour and sat quietly at the 13 Amphibious Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Calabar to write the examination to be recruited into the army. Comprised of young men and women, the teeming crowd sat quietly as rain drops pelted their bodies and soaked them right down to their under garments while horse whip bearing soldiers stood guard. The youth underwent rigorous screening exercise before being allowed entry into the field at the Brigade headquarters at Akim where they wrote the examination as no hall was big enough to accommodate them. They first stood in a long queue which stretched two kilometres beginning from the gate of the Brigade through Mary Slessor Avenue to Calabar Road . Captain Ibrahim Yussuf, the Army Brigade Public Relations Officer, was not present at the examination venue and several calls to his mobile phone were not answered. A source at the venue of the exercise said this year’s rigorous screening exercise of the applicants was to safeguard against any breach in security during the exercise. www.vanguardngr.com |
ojimbo: senseless point. He made a point but you replied out of pointof course my post wld be senseless to you because am not a devils advocate, stick to your clandestine association and allow those who savour in the glory of true LIGHT to be.If you are Ogboni or whatever, come out fully and represent it,dont use christianity to shield your self(just like what Olori Olowo Oladimeji did!),nobody is against your freedom of association but as for me and my household,we are proudly for Jesus christ. |
harev16: I hope Africa can free herself soon from the slavery of foreign religions, especially the two major ones in Nigeriahypocrisy in display, you only care about liberating yourself from foriegn religion,i guess you wld also liberate yourself from western education;science and technology, liberate yourselves from always having to run to Britain,USA etc for medical tourism and of course liberate yourself from always using your lap-top to spew trash...why is it that all you who are seeking for liberation from the west are only kin on religion, but loves going to the west to copy everything and proudly set the west as example whenever you want to critcise government! You cant force African religion on people, those who have seen the LIGHT,will most likely stick with the LIGHT...if African religion offers you succour, good for you! |
I dont ve problem with the so-called prophet Oladimeji being a member of Ogboni.Ogboni is part of the yoruba traditional settings,so if he wants to stick to his ogboni good for him but calling himself a prophet and relating his association with christianity is totally unacceptable and amounts to defamation.Since the Holy bible made it clear that our God is a jealous God and he cannot share his glory with other gods,Oladimeji should proudly stick to his Ogboni and build his temple or shrine where he offers solution to his victims sorry,i mean his clients rather than using christianity as a cover. In the interview he granted sunnewspaper,he said he usually calls on Ogun and other yoruba numerous gods during healing and of course Olodumare which is the christian God.He must endeavour to stand firm with whatever he believes and not entangling christendom with his deeds,he even said he prepares charms known as Awoye(nt so sure of the spelling)for pastors who wants their churches to be filled to capacity! He mentioned of formerly being a member of Isala Ogboni fraternity and later decamped to (AOFN)aborigine Ogboni fraternity of Nigeria!Let him stick to his African tradition and let christians be. |
The Islamic terrorist group known as ISIS,is one hell of blood sucking vampires! This group has succeeded in taking over large part of Iraq and they are very close to the capital, thesame group are trying to over-run syria and have boasted of their ability to launch an Islamic uprising in Nigeria, which is also mentioned as part of their Islamic Magreb empire! So the earlier Nigeria accepts the fact that we are in a real mess and a state of war,the better! Our leaders must shun politics and face the reality before us or we may wake up one morning to discover that indeed 'there was a country'called Nigeria. |
..though i believe this is boko haram seeking cheap publicity, however government of Nassarawa must use all the security apparatus available to him to protect these school girls,if need be they schools may temporarily be closed down,in other to avoid any further national embarrassment! But i just hope APC governors are nt into their usual dirty political games,a case of 'the witch that cried at night,in the morning the child died'! |
Letter threatens abduction of schoolgirls in Nasarawa Category: NewsPublished on Wednesday, 02 July 2014 05:00Written by Hir Joseph, The Nasarawa State government yesterday confirmed reports of a letter purportedly written by Boko Haram insurgents threatening to abduct girls from a school in the state. The Commissioner for Education, Barrister Yakubu Na’Hauwa, confirmed that there was a letter from Boko Haram to the principal of GSSS, Lafia, threatening to abduct his female students. He said the letter sought the principal’s cooperation with the insurgents to avoid bloodshed during the operation. He could not confirm receipt of such letters by the other schools which were also said to have been written. “I was not in the state, but I returned to receive a complaint from the principal of GSSS Lafia about the purported threat letter Boko Haram to abduct female students from the school,” he said, adding that he had to urgently instruct the ministry’s permanent secretary to do a formal complaint to the state government, drawing attention to the letter on the need to quickly act on it. The letters were said to have been received yesterday from dispatch riders who stopped at the gates of three schools in the state. State police spokesman ASP Ismaila Umaru said his office had no information on the incident and did not confirm the threat letters. www.elombah.com |

I started this thread and i thought after the Nigeria Match,i could come back and appraise the situation of things, but as it is now,am totally bruised, battered and my morale is very low...why do super Eagles hurt Nigerians so much?i cant even take a bottle of Heineken,it now taste so bitter in my mouth! How i wish i can smoke weeds,i wld ve done that and high my spirit with some cheap drugs.I cant believe its all over for us and just may be in the next four yrs we may play under a different nation(say Biafra rep,Niger delta rep,Odua Rep,middlebelt rep or Arewa rep)God forbid!!! |

Obiano Commissions Nigeria’s First Building Materials Testing Laboratory Category: REPORTS Published on Sunday, 29 June 2014 21:44 By James Eze Worried by the spate of building collapses in the state, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has opened what is widely believed to be the first Building and Construction Materials Quality Control Laboratory in Nigeria. In a brief ceremony at the weekend to mark the commissioning of the ultra-modern facility sited in the premises of the Ministry of Works, Awka, the governor expressed hope that with this interventionist effort, the saga of building collapses in the state would soon be consigned to the past. According to him, the facility, has over 120 equipment for testing various materials to ensure a comprehensive compliance to standards. Chief Obiano observed that with the facility, the incidence of structural failures which lead to the collapse of buildings, road and other infrastructures would come to an end in Anambra State. The governor however warned that any builder or construction engineer who fails to submit his materials for testing in the laboratory runs the risk of having his building or any project under construction pulled down by the relevant authorities as his administration would no longer fold its hands and watch citizens die on account of someone’s carelessness. The governor also ordered the immediate removal of all structures leaning on approved original building plans and made it clear that very soon, when the relevant authorities embark on the dismantling of such structures, it would be accompanied by severe penalties ranging from outright prosecution to the payment of heavy fines including the eventual cost of dismantling them by the authorities. He also enjoined builders to maintain the specified set-back from road as government would not hesitate to demolish any structure sited on a set-back. Earlier in his opening remarks, the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Callistus Ilozumba said the laboratory would be managed through a public-private partnership arrangement between the State government and a private firm. Hon. Ilozumba further explained that in accordance with specification, construction materials would be pre-tested before they get to the project sites and quality control test conducted while the projects are in progress. He called on all the stakeholders to continue to give support towards the realization of the goal of the project. In his own remarks on behalf of public-private partners, Mr. Ebosie Ezeoke disclosed that the laboratory would provide service for testing sub-soil, soil, concrete, steel, chemical, asphalt and non-destructive test for existing structures. Also speaking, the Secretary to the Investigation Panel on Collapsed Building, Mr. Emeka Okpala said the Panel was already using the facility to carry out their work on collapsed building. I just pray this job get done in one year,as promised by the governor...but i have my own reservations in regards to awarding such magnificient contracts to local contractors, past experience tells us a lot. And for Obiano,we are solidly behind you! |

Continuation.... THE EKITI ELECTION LESSON I feel heart-broken that some online celebrities have been insulting the good people of Ekiti for voting Fayose over the educated Fayemi. They have being using words like hungry, stomach infrastructure to describe those very educated and sophisticated people. I think it is selfish of these bloggers to begrudge the Ekiti people for receiving rice from Fayose when they had themselves gotten N50,000 from the governor during a so-called tour. Come to think of it, winning in 16 local governments out of 16 is no fluke. Fine, if they insist Fayose won because he enticed people with rice, that means he must have shared rice to over 203,000 people which is a near impossibility Have these people forgotten that winning elections is about acceptability and doing your homework well? This is something Fayose did. For one, I have always known Fayose to be immensely popular in Ekiti State. His people love him to bits. A man who identifies with the people will be looked up to as a hero by the people. It is simple. Describing Ekiti people as hungry because they refused to vote for Fayemi is fundamentally wrong and rude. You cannot stay in Katsina, Kano, or Crimea and decide for the people of Ekiti. Amadioha cannot leave Enugu and assume jurisdiction in Igbo-Ora in Oyo State. Check the case of Madukola V. Ndkedilim. ISSUE OF GIFT SHARING You see, a lot of APC Twitter Overlords only see that which they want to see. It is common knowledge that almost every politician in Nigeria indulges in sharing of gifts before elections so as to induce voters. It happened in 1993 (Abiola Rice), Obasanjo did it in 1999, Fashola did it in 2011, Akeredolu did it in 2012, Fayemi did it in 2014, Fayose did it in 2014, Aregbesola is doing it now. Tainting Fayose’s victory because of that is demonic and uncharitable. With the little experience I have had with the electoral process in Nigeria, people will take your gifts and vote for or against you irrespective of your attempt at inducing them. As student at the University of Ibadan, I saw people take former governor Alao-Akala’s wads of cash and yet voted for the now defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Alao-Akala even got a brand new Plasma television for my Hall (The Great Independence Hall, UI). We appreciated the gift but yet, he lost in the hall of residence when elections were conducted. In 2003 when it was glaring that Gbenga Daniel would oust Aremo Olusegun Osoba from office as Ogun State Governor, Osoba shared lots of money to artisans and market women. He shared bread sandwiched with money to kids. Yet, that did not stop him from suffering defeat in the hands of Gbenga Daniel. I can go on and on. The message here is simple; Fayose won not because he shared rice. He won because he is the choice of the Ekiti people. That must be respected. PARTING SHOT TO APC The Anambra, Ondo and Ekiti elections should act as learning curves for the APC toy soldiers; that is if they are ready to learn and are ready to come down from their high plastic horses. Winning elections go beyond ranting on Twitter, spreading propaganda, talking down on other people or hyping people. Serious people who want to win elections go to the grassroots and identify with the voters; people who have no smartphones and do not know neither do they care of the existence of Twitter. Elections are won by meeting real people and not artificial and fake people. The APC people can keep up with their Twitter Act. I, however, hope they know they should forget any fantasies of winning the Presidential elections next year and should instead focus on not allowing their party crumble after the selection of a presidential candidate. They have failed litmus tests in Anambra, Ekiti and Ondo so far. The APC is not a serious political party, they’re in the political business to party.--------------------Ayokunle Odekunle |
A Teachable Moment for Tinubu, El Rufai and the APC Vanguard Published on Thursday, 26 June 2014 13:20 By Ogbuefi Blogs In my widely celebrated article, ' Fayemi Lost Ekiti State to Tinubu' ofSunday, 22 June 2014, I stated that now that Ekiti is out of the stranglehold of the political fiefdom of Bola Ahmed Tinubu - the self-proclaimed and stupendously rich Awoist who dines with the devil and manipulates his people in order to gain a foothold on Aso Rock - My crystal ball now sees Osun and Lagos falling out of the hands of the opposition if theywill never learn vital lessons from the Ekiti election. Alas, it appears that "with acute ignorance mixed with some baseless arrogance, they are afflicted with some of the most hazardous self-inflicted" inability to imbibe that teachable moment. Now that Osun election is around the corner, APC seems to have started their baseless propaganda that leads to nowhere. I read below this afternoon from one of their facebook pundits showing their completely failed to grasp the Ekiti lessons. Soni Akoji propaganda ran thus: "Buruji Kashamu the co-ordinator of the South - West PDP mobilization committee speaks:Hear him:"They accused me of drug money; I shall use the money to feed the poor Nigerians and kick APC out of Nigeria."- Buruji Kashamu "It will be recalled that the PDP Chieftain who is at dagger drawn with Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, promised to spend N1 billion during the electioneering campaign in Ekiti state to kick out APC and get Fayose of the PDP elected. He was the financier of the Fayose branded rice that was distributed to the electorate. "He has promised to do it again in a grand style by spending N2 billion of his personal fund in the forth coming gubernatorial election in Osun state in a bid to kick Ogbeni Rauf out and get Iyiola Omisore of the PDP elected as the next governor in the August 9th election. Can he repeat the same in Osun? All these osusu he is sharing, what is his pay-off? I hope we won't witness another Ngige and Chris Uba brouhaha when the governors whose election he financed can no longer keep faith with their agreed sharing formula of the state's monthly allocation from Abuja? "We are indeed sitting on a keg of gunpowder if we see nothing wrong with an individual spending money as if it is going into extinction, just to get his candidate elected into public office." - END To Tinubu, Elrufai and these APC Vanguards, I recommend Ayokunle Odekunle's 'Dear APC Twitterati, Elections Are Not Won On Twitter'. EXCERPTS: "Whenever any election approaches, they are almost always cocksure their candidate will emerge victorious; even when such candidate has little or no political pedigree. This is borne out of arrogance. They presume that they are the best human beings ever to exist and so their candidates just have to emerge as winner in any election as they are a rare breed of progressives- specially ordained by God. They do three things pursuant to the elections to wit: 2. Malign the candidate of the other parties After successfully hyping their own candidate, they then set about maligning and damaging the character of the other candidates; especially the strongest challenger of the candidates. In the case of Ekiti, they called Ayo Fayose a thug, a wizard, a murderer and a thief. You call him a thief, which court has convicted him of corruption? You call him a murderer, mention one person you have seen him kill and the name of the competent Court that convicted him of either murder or manslaughter? These people won’t be deterred. Few days to the election, they began tweeting aggressively, admonishing and cursing people who would dare vote for that thug known as Ayo Fayose. Then I wondered aloud: What is your own business? Why are people hiding under the anonymity that Twitter provides to malign the image of other people? The APC Twitter activists were not done. They posted pictures of Ayo Fayose sharing bags of rice to Ekiti people, ostensibly to canvass for votes. Trust their PDP counterparts; they dug up pictures of Fayemi sharing jollof rice to aged people. Beaten to their game, the APC people then kept quiet because as it seemed, both parties had both risen to the occasion by sharing rice. |

Five Years After; Where Is Lagos N8bn Sunburn Yacht? Five years ago, the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Lagos State told the public that it had taken a giant leap in tourism promotion in the State by acquiring a yacht, valued at about N8bn. The now controversial yacht is an inshore boat hotel. The Sunborn Yacht Hotel before it berthed in Nigeria, was operated and managed by the ISS Group, UK, with an undisputable signature for service excellence. The Sunborn Yacht Hotel was Custom built in 1999 and refitted in the year 2002; it combines contemporary class and comfort being 18.4m wide, 106.5m in length and 17.6m in height from the sea level. The edifice with a total of six decks and an interior space of approximately 5000 sq.m will provide a breathtaking ambience for corporate guests, conference delegates, wedding parties and leisure guests to hold their exclusive events when operational. However, as at today, no one can say precisely what has happened to the yacht and the N8 billion Lagos tax payers money that went into it. The state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had recently accused the state government of corruption. It challenged the state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to speak out on the whereabouts of the yacht and the two helicopters bought by his administration for security surveillance of the state. The state Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Tunji Shelle, while addressing party faithful during the General Assembly of the chapter, had said, “After floating miserably on the Marina water for so long, the controversial Sunburn Yacht, which cost the Lagos State Government, under (former Governor) Bola Tinubu, a whooping N8 billion suddenly disappeared, only to be sighted at Thames in England. Yesterday, the APC Lagos State Chapter, said the Lagos State Government had quit the Sunborn Yacht Hotel. The party said it was a bad business and the government had abandoned the deal. The state Interim Publicity Secretary, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, said the state government took a bad business decision on the yacht and had done away with it. He said, “Every successful investor or businessman will tell you that business is not a bed of roses. He knows business is not all about gains all the time; you gain in some and lose in some. It is the same with governments all over the world. No government anywhere in the world will tell you that it has achieved100 per cent success in every decision it has taken. “The world will forgive you for taking decisions and making all the mistakes but the world will not forgive you if you do not take decisions at all for fear of failure. LASG has done away with the bad business called the Sunborn Yacht project. Case rested.” In November 2008, the Lagos State government through the then commissioner of tourism and Inter-governmental Relations, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, took delivery of the worth over 5 Billion Naira Sunborn Yacht, amidst pomp and pageantry. Senator Afikuyomi while conducting Governor Babatunde Fashola round the Yacht when it arrived Nigeria in November 2008, said the floating hotel was the first of its kind in Africa, which would put the State and Nigeria in the league of the first five major cities of the world with similar hospitable facilities and tourism earnings capabilities, adding that the yacht came to Lagos to turn around the state’s fortune in tourism and hospitality services. Five years after the state took delivery of the revered Yacht, the much anticipated gains and projections that would put the State and Nigeria in the league of the first five major cities of the world with similar hospitable facilities and tourism earnings capabilities is yet to be seen. Now, the question is: who orchestrated this 419 and who were the beneficiaries of this waste of public fund. This is certainly a fraud and Governor Babatunde Fashola must say something he knows about this fraud, failure which he remains an accessory after the fact in the fraud. At a point, the Lagos State Government, in trying to cover up its culpability in the N8 billion yatch fraud denied any involvement in the purchase of the vessel brought from England and moored on Marina Beach Front since 2008. At a press conference in Lagos, the commissioner for Tourism and Inter- Governmental Relations, Mr. Disun Holloway, said the state government had never been involved in the purchase of the N8 billion Sunburn Yacht Hotel. He said, “As you are also wondering about the disappearance of the Sunburn Yacht so is the Lagos State government. We have said repeatedly that the yacht does not belong to the Lagos State government and never invested in it. “We heard that the Lagos State government had earlier asked the owners to move the yatch away from the shoreline for security reasons.” However, the Lagos State government appeared to have forgotten what it told the public in 2008 when it announced its intention to bring the yatch to Lagos. Then, it was widely reported that the State goverment, in collaboration with Diamond Captial Limited, the investment arm of Diamond Bank Plc was committing about 25 million euros to the floating hotel facility, due for delivery in the third quarter of 2008. The deal was said to have been initiated by the Babatunde Fashola administration through its Ministry of Tourism and Inter-governmental Relations and bank rolled by Diamond Capital Ltd, the investment banking arm of Diamond Bank Plc and facilitated by MIDC Ltd and Westcom Ltd, two Nigerian venture capital advisory firms. Speaking at the brief occasion of the Final Sales Contract Signing ceremony for the acquisition which has a Lagos based firm, Planet Project Ltd as Project managers and Consultants at the Board Room of Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, the then Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism and Inter-governmental Relations, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi who represented Governor Babatunde Fashola at the event described the dream of the Fashola administration to acquire a heritage hotel such as the Sunborn Yacht Hotel as indicative of the administration’s desire to transform the tourism landscape in Nigeria and assume sector leadership in Africa and beyond saying, “the Hotel we have just acquired for Lagos with the support of Diamond Capital Ltd will be the first of its kind in Africa and indeed the Middle East and put us in the league of the first five major cities of the world with similar hospitality facilities and tourism earnings capabilities. This hospitality facility is the first that was custom built. “So it is a piece of heritage that we are buying into.” Afikuyomi, who further ascribed the success of the acquisition bid which saw Lagos beating the cities of Doha and Dubai respectively, two renown tourism destinations in the world, to the inspiring leadership of Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN), his colleagues at the Water Front, Physical Planning, Justice, Environment, Works and Infrastructure Ministries respectively as well as the encouraging efforts of the Special Adviser on Taxation and indeed the entire members of the Lagos State Cabinet who bought into the bold vision said, “but for their support, Lagos would not have been able to make this history as the quest by Dubai to acquire a QE2 Boat Hotel would have meant that the first Boat Hotel in the African Continent and the Middle East would have gone first to Dubai . But today, we have positioned Lagos on the world tourism map and the results would be self-evident for all to see”. As at today, the question is still; where is the yatch and where is the N8 billion Lagosians’ fund? Gov Babatunde Fashola |
