What Texas can learn from Nigeria when it comes to containing Ebola - Washington Post
Published on Saturday, 04 October 2014 14:18
By Washington Post

Washington - While devastating reports continue to stream out of West Africa, where the deadly virus has overwhelmed already weak public health systems and left thousands of people dead, and anxiety grips the United States over the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the country, one nation serves as an example of hope: Nigeria, which appears to have successfully contained Ebola.
As concerns spread over U.S. hospital readiness, there are some lessons to be learned from Nigeria, where officials managed to get ahead of the fast-moving virus after it was brought into Africa's most populous country by an Ebola-infected man who'd flown into Lagos. This week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the outbreak could be coming to an end in Nigeria, with no new Ebola cases since Aug. 31.
As in the U.S. case, Ebola arrived in Nigeria by passenger plane. But unlike Thomas Eric Duncan — who arrived in Dallas before he became symptomatic and was therefore not contagious during his flights from Liberia to Texas through Brussels and Dulles International Airport — Patrick Sawyer was already symptomatic when he landed in Lagos on July 20. At that point, Sawyer, Nigeria's Patient Zero, was contagious and dying.
It was a nightmare scenario with the potential to spiral out of control, given the bustling city of Lagos, Africa's largest, is a major transportation hub. As Sawyer was placed in isolation, public health officials had to track down every single person who'd come into contact with him, from the flights he'd boarded to the Lagos airport and the private hospital where he went after landing. And they had to do so quickly, making the process known as contract tracing a priority.
"In the whole system approach in beating the war on Ebola, contact tracing is the key public health activity that needs to be done," said Gavin MacGregor-Skinner, who helped with the Ebola response in Nigeria with the Elizabeth R. Griffin Research Foundation. "The key is to find all the people that patient had direct close contact with."
From that single patient came a list of 281 people, MacGregor-Skinner said. Every one of those individuals had to provide health authorities twice-a-day updates about their well-being, often through methods like text-messaging. Anyone who didn't feel well or failed to respond was checked on, either through a neighborhood network or health workers.

stan241: As hard as you tried to hide both your hatred for him and your deep seething hatred for the good people of Imo state u just cldnt help urself....that he is an APC supporter doesnt make him that less of an Igbo man different folks my man instead you should be cautioning the both of them squarely for embarrassing ndigbo in general on this site throughout today with their disgusting posts and not taking sides...and people wonder why an Igbo man cant rule Nigeria
for the record,i do not hide my disapproval for Abagworo and Rochas kind of politics,i know Rochas personally, more than you will ever believe, during his campaign i was so happy and participated, with anticipation that he will go into govt house as a radical and revolutionary APGA igboist governor. He got into govt house and all that changed,he brought down his deputy, changed his party and joined the igbo haters party, with self interest of being the vice president in a Yoruba party, which is impossible,he quickly forgot history. He started his Mosque building appeasement program, which is anti Igbo,he gave money to Igbos in Abuja who were converted from christianity to muslim, that hurts me so much, when works on the second Niger bridge was being commissioned and all Eastern state governors includind Delta state governor came,as a mark of respect for an Eastern interest project, only Rochas choose to stay back,so as to please his APC friends. Then compare this to what Northern governors often do regardless of party, whenever anything concerning Northern interest comes up etc.
As for your accusation of me hating Imo state,it is unfounded, only an Igbo afulefu will hate a sister Igbo state, when some of us had worked so hard to unite and be stronger as Igbos.Am a core igboist and will shed the last drop of my blood for any Igbo or Igbo state and you can check my past posts in this forum to convince you....meanwhile,when i was in university of Jos,i belong to an Isreali-Igbo awareness movement,in which Rochas was also a strong senior visiting member and we shared common Igbo greatness ideals and now he has let us down.

There was a time i tried very hard to caution both Chino and Abagworo but it all fell on deaf ears.Chino is passionate about Obi and defends all his actions with great zeal even when right or wrong, but that doesnt give him the right or impetus to insult another great Igbo state(that i detest) and am angered by his action.
As for Abagworo,he is an embarrassment to igbos and has taken up the kind of Rochas-APC-Yoruba sabotaging and igbo betrayal kind of politics and i have long lost any respect i have for him.Like his mentor Rochas, they can sell igbo land for all they care,as long as their political interest is guided.Abagworo is a national disgrace to Igbos, though i doubt if truly an adult igbo man can behave in such an irresponsible manner as he does.

Continuation
On the other hand, the children of thetalakawa– the poor and downtrodden – were rendered into fly-infestedal majiri; street urchins who live with exploitative koranic mallams. They frequently deploy them to kill non-Muslims and non-indigenes in the North. The youth have now channelled their anger into Boko Haram insurgency to overthrow the ruling class of the North for which Ango Abdullahi is a noisy spokesman.
These system wreckers want to gate-crash back into power by all means. These were the people who threatened that if Jonathan was allowed to enjoy his inalienable constitutional rights to vie for presidency of the country, they would make Nigeria ungovernable for him.
Their argument is that after the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua, his Deputy, Dr Goodluck Jonathan should have forfeited his constitutional rights to succeed his boss. He should have given up his inalienable rights to vie for the presidency because of the rotational principle of the PDP.
They call it a fight for justice. Where was equity when Ango Abdullahi and other Arewa freeloaders exclusively called the shots for 39 years, reducing the South to mere spectators? Is it now that a president from the South-South in the former Eastern Region is presiding over Nigeria and gradually restoring the broken institutions of state that Abdullahi attaches a sanctimonious meaning to “equity”?
The truth of the matter is that Ango Abdullahi and the NEF are in no position to carry out the threat they have issued. They cannot stop Nigerians from voting for Jonathan or the PDP if that is what Nigerians want. Also, they have no power to facilitate the victory of the All Progressives Congress, APC. APC victory will happen in spite of the NEF if that is the wish of the Nigerian electorate.
The Northern Region that the British colonial master created and made a monster to rule Nigeria either through ballot or bullet is no more. The three old regions are dead.
The old Northern region was the last to die. It was the inheritors of Ahmadu Bello’s largesse like Ango Abdullahi who killed the North through religious extremism and oppression of Minorities and non-Muslims who helped them and the Yorubas in the war against Igbos during 1966 to 1970. At the just-concluded National Conference, the Middle Belt separated themselves cleanly from Arewa Muslim North and sided with the combined South to create a new political possibility which potentially renders Arewa to an underdog.
Even at that, Arewa North does not dance to the political tune dictated by the faction that Ango speaks for. Ango Abdullahi, Lawal Kaita and Alhaji Ibrahim Coomassie, who boasted that the North would release “Plan B”, are agents of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s faction of the APC. They used their Northern posturing to vie against Jonathan in 2011.
Northern presidential aspirants closed ranks against Jonathan and Atiku emerged as consensus candidate. Jonathan still thrashed Atiku at the PDP primaries by scoring 2,736 against Atiku’s 805. Jonathan went ahead to beat Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential election of 2011, scoring 59% to Buhari’s 32%. Using the ogre of North to frighten political opponents no longer works.
Nigerians still vote along ethnic and religious lines to some extent, but that is not the deciding factor. The deciding factor is where the various political leaders belong. The North is a major stakeholder in both APC and PDP.
The North (both Arewa and Middle Belt) is a major stakeholder in the Jonathan presidency. The choice before these leaders in 2015 is whether their interests are better served with theincumbent, President Jonathan, or whoever emerges as the APC flag bearer. They will direct their loyalists at the localities to vote accordingly. Ango Abdullahi is just letting off empty, hot air.
As for Coomassie’s Plan B, it no longer exists. North used to bring in the army whenever their civilian wing in power was no longer sure-footed. They used to change even military regimes whenever the one on ground was no longer acceptable to them. Those days are over. If Boko Haram was Plan B, it is failing. It will not affect the eventual outcome of the 2015 elections.

What is “North’s” Plan B?on October 02, 2014 at 3:30 am
By Ochereome Nnanna
A national newspaper over the past weekend carried a bold headline: “North Vows To Stop Jonathan”, with riders: “We will ensure PDP loses” – Ango Abdullahi; Arewa Chair Commassie: “We are keeping Plan B to our chest”.
Professor Ango Abdullahi is the spokesman of the reactionary Northern Elders Forum, NEF, which is overpopulated with former holders of prominent offices at the federal level. They were the people that the late leader of Northern Nigeria, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, slaved throughout his life to educate and pump into prominent positions during the years that the region exclusively dominated the Nigerian political sphere.
Gowon, Sultan of Sokoto, Yakowa and Sambo
Ango Abdullahi and his cohorts were given free education and pampered like princes while at school because they were just a handful when compared with their teeming colleagues from the former Eastern and Western Regions.
When they graduated, their classmates at Barewa and other colleges in the North who were sent to the military had occupied prominent positions in the Federal Military Government. They enjoyed all the plum postings between 1966 and 1999. At a point they believed that Nigeria was a colony of Arewa because apart from Olusegun Obasanjo, their surrogate who succeeded Gen Murtala Mohammed when he was killed in a power struggle between Northern factions in 1976 to 1979, the North reigned for 39 years.
It was this class of Northern elite that wrecked the country, its economy and institutions set up by the colonial masters and post-independence leaders. Like parasitic cankerworms, they ate down federal parastatals such as the Railways, Shipping Line, Nigeria Airways, Ajaokuta Steel, Alscon, NITEL, NIPOST, among others, until they were either scrapped or sold off for pennies under questionable privatisation programmes.
Back home in the North, they appropriated all the money and power they derived from their dominance of the Federal Government to themselves, friends and family members and produced a tiny core of super-billionaires, with their children attending the best schools in the world.

A lot has been written about the $9.3 million contained in a private aircraft from Nigeria to South Africa seized recently, but no one mentioned any thing about the role of our National Security Adviser. Nor has anyone revealed the identity of the two Nigerians arrested with the smuggled dollars.
Moreover, the allegation 'that along with the pastor, President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, coordinated the movement of the cash, and that its original destination was Cyprus, not South Africa', has neither been confirmed nor denied.
Egheomhanre Eyieyien wrote:

Col. Sabo Dasuki, the National Security Adviser, is a SABOteur. He is working against President Goodluck Jonathan. He is the Number One Fifth Columnist in the Presidency. His disloyalty is evident.
There are questions which Col. Sabo Dasuki must answer:
1. Why did Col. Sabo Dasuki engage arms dealers and pay them $9.3million in cash to purchase arms?
2. Did Col. Sabo Dasuki keep the President in the know regarding the transaction?
3. What did Gen. Aliyu Gusau, the Minister of Defence and a brother-in-law to Col. Sabo Dasuki, know about the transaction?
4. There are over 300 private jets in Nigeria and several airplanes in the Presidential Fleet, why did Col. Sabo Dasuki choose to hire the private jet owned by Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which was being operated for charter services by a leasing company, to transport the arms dealers and the $9.3million cash to South Africa for the botched transaction?
5. Why did Col. Sabo Dasuki leak the transaction to the Nigerian press?
6. Why did Col. Sabo Dasuki not inform the South African authorities that he was sending people to purchase weapons for the Nigerian Government?
7. Who is Col. Sabo Dasuki REALLY working for?
Nigeria is bigger than Col. Sabo Dasuki and his treachery. He has proven his gross incompetence and ineptitude.
President Goodluck Jonathan should sack Col. Sabo Dasuki NOW!

$9.3m arms deal: Catholic Bishops exonerate Oritsejaforon September 27, 2014 at 6:48 am in News

By CALEB AYANSINA
ABUJA – CATHOLIC Church, weekend, described as malicious and misleading, a media report that the Church chided the President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor over the 9.3million arms deal in South Africa.
Some Nigerian Newspapers had on Thursday 25th September 2014, and suggesting that Most Rev. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) accused Pastor Ayo Ortistejafor of denting the image of the Christian Association of Nigeria over the case of the jet that was found with $9.3milion allegedly owned by the CAN President.
Oritsejafor and wife
Reacting to this in a statement in Abuja, the Director (Social Communications Directorate), Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria Rev. Fr. Chris Anyanwu said “the report is not only false and malicious but a calculated attempt to further sow the seed of disharmony between Catholics and the leadership of CAN.
“While we disassociate ourselves from the newspaper reports, it is important to put the records in the right perspective.
The statement explained that Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama granted an interview with the Hausa BBC Service in Kaduna in which he condemned money laundering.
It added that Kaigama never, in the said interview, cast any aspersion on the person of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), but called for dispassionate investigation into the matter.
According to Anyanwu, “Reporters who monitored the said interview in Hausa BBC Service totally misrepresented the Archbishop by misquoting him.
” Knowing the person of Archbishop Kaigama as a man who is committed to ecumenism and inter-religious dialogue, there is no way he can make such an inflammatory statement against the leadership of CAN which is capable of causing dissections among the CAN family.
“It was amazing to read such sensational headlines as ‘Ayo Oritsejafor is disgracing CAN’ – Catholic Bishops of Nigeria’, ‘Oritsejafor has dragged Christianity to the mud – Bishop Kaigama’, ‘Bishop blasts Oritsejafor for playing politics with CAN’.
The statement explained that “This is unfortunate, inciteful, unpatriotic and uncharitable. It looks like some people have problems with the person of Pastor Oritsejafor and wanted as the saying goes ‘to borrow the mouth of Archbishop Kaigama to chop their onions’.
“It appears that some people are hell-bent on setting the Catholic Church against the rest of CAN. Some want to use unfortunate situations to promote their fortunes.
“Yes the Catholic Bishops did in the past make their observations about how CAN could be run better not with the intention to discredit the body but so that things could be corrected fraternally, but there were screaming headlines which tended to put the Catholic Church in negative light. This is happening again.
“We are indeed embarrassed at the monumental scale of misrepresentations in the said newspaper reports. What we expect from Journalists is genuine reports based on truth and facts, which ought to promote public trust and confidence.
“A hall mark of responsible journalism is that reporters ought to cross-check their facts before publishing them whereas reports based on falsehood, rumours and preconceived ideas such as this, are not only malicious but a calculated attempt to strain the good relationship between the Catholic Church and the leadership of CAN.
“There is a poison of deliberate misinformation in the air, more deadly than the Ebola virus disease. This may be a symptom of how forthcoming political events may be handled in the media. Some persons want to at all cost see the North and the South, Christians and Muslims fight.
“In God’s name it shall not come to be. Our prayer is that our nation shall remain one and indivisible. No matter how hard our detractors may try, they will not succeed.
“As leaders of the Catholic Church we shall continue to be objective in our assessment of the situation in the country and endeavour to edify by our comments and actions and not to destroy. This is because we believe that we are one people and one nation. God bless our beloved country Nigeria.”

As much as i do not subscribe to Wole Soyinka's idea of labelling some Nigerians sponsors of boko haram, simply because a political mercenary from Austrialia said so,i also find it detestablel how supposedly educated people still can not diffrentiate between fraternities and cults and also ascribing it to occultism.Though i understand that politicians play on the masses ignorance inother to put across a point,i have waited with bated breath for people to prove that 'Pyrate' which Wole Soyinka and six other notable Nigerians such as Ralph Opara,Ige Imoukhede,Sylvanus Ogbeche etc brought to the then university college Ibadan, has a history of violence but that they cant prove rather they keep refering to the pseudo-fraternities in Nigerian universities, whom some of their founders may have their inspiration from the tyranical military government of that time.
i checked the pyratical creed online or motto and it reads 1.against convention,2.against ethnicity,3.for humanistic ideals 4.for comradeship and chivarly.
And i concluded that these are truly the challenges Nigeria is faced with and if Nigeria can work with this creed, then our society will be better for it.

New Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) bride has thrown stones on his former leader, Ahmed Bola Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) by calling him a demented brain fellow.
Ikimi who was replying Tinubu over his recent aspersion on him noted that excessive consumption of things may have affected Tinubu. “But I want to clarify that I read the kind of response the leader from Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, tried to make and I think he has lost it all. For once, I think he has a memory problem and I think the memory problem derives from his excessive consumption of various things”, he stated
Responding to Tinubu’s claim that he was in the party to sell it, he noted that he was not just a leader of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) but a founding member. Taking Tinubu down memory lane, he refuted claims that he betrayed Moshood Abiola. “Did I need to spend twelve years to create a party in order to sell it? I created the party; I did not join the party. First of all, if he has a good memory, Abiola was in SDP not in NRC. I in NRC cannot betray someone who is in SDP.
Secondly I stopped being chairman of NRC in 1992. Abiola’s election was in 1993. The National Chairman was Dr Hamed Kusamatu who was his own kinsman.
“How can I become the chairman to betray Abiola when I was not Kusamatu? Even if it was NRC, between Kusamatu and me was Mrs Okolu. So there were two other chairmen before me. “Now SDP went to election, the first foreign minister was Baba Gana Kingible who was his running mate. How could I have been the one who betrayed him? I did not join Abacha’s government until 1994. So, tell Bola Tinubu to get his historical facts correct”
“I have heard people talked about Abacha. Who did not work for Abacha? Who was that woman who was carrying market women to demonstrate on behalf of Abacha? So, let be very careful when pointing accusing fingers at others. “I created the PTF. I was adviser, somebody ran the PTF. When the time comes, find out where he is now. Today they are building a lot of projects in Lagos and who is the contractor who is doing it, he is a contractor who used to work with Abacha.”
The former foreign affairs minister stated that he was full of surprises to see the PDP come en masse to welcome him and gave him a grand reception when he stepped down at the Benin Airport.
