On the current application form, you indicate that you were refused a visa to Canada. However, you do not declare that you have ever been refused a visa, admission, or been ordered to leave any other country. According to information in our records, you were refused a visa to the US in 2009, 2010, 2011.
i clearly stated that i was refused visa even with the reasons. i didn't not pay for my SEVIS fee. I was surprised that i got the mail yesterday. @Austineep, MichV, Osemigho, Cannynurse. You people should save a brother here.

Since you claim you stated your previous refusals from the US embassy, refer the canadian visa officer to your application form and state in your response that you didn't not conceal it but declared every refusal in your form since you claim you declared them.

I still think you should work on your SOP. Avoid generic reasons going for your intended program. Intent should be specific.

Eg, Having excelled so well in so so so and with the interest for modern methodologies to equip myself in so so so, the master degree offered in the univer of..... is reflective of my desired research Interest which will in the long run bring ease and also bring sustainable concept in actualizing solutions in so so so.

I have firm knowledge in so so... But have limitation in ........ Part of my master degree will enable me learn from professors, faculty and students with different grabs of this area. I choosed this program of all other program because it is...... different from similar programs both in Nigeria and other canadian schools and has so so so advantage.
Upon return, so so so is my planned application of my acquired skills. So so so is how I intend to implement it.

Once you give officers a logical and a good study plan, it becomes easier to see through your purpose of visit. Your profile is good already.

There is more to your application. Please order for your GCMS file. You have a good profile. Something probably didn't add up somewhere( in the VO's eyes).

Each application is treated as a fresh one(new and re application). However, a visa officer may want to review previous reasons for a refusal to ascertain if there is/are significant new information or change in condition. The key thing for every application is to OUTRIGHTLY meet the requirements of a study permit. A different visa officer may review a re-application and his/her judgement will be based on the provisions of the IRCC act and not SOLELY on previous refusal reasons. Once your application meets the requirements, it will be approved irrespective of the previous reasons and how you have addressed them.

So if a change of course would present your case as a genuine student while at the same time present your purpose of visit in reasonable light, it will be approved even if you mention this in a SOP or not. While I would encourage people to use a SOP in a re-application, it can help narrow a visa officer's mind to things that is/are unique about your application or elaborate on your overall Intent to complete your program. Your SOP mustn't be all about the changes in your re-application or pointing out the things you have done differently. This can form part of it but a good SOP should help present your case, explain your purpose, your overall goals and ultimately help convince an officer that your primary Intention is to study.

Mehn, IRCC today though! Make everybody calm down small. Nothing spoil. Things will always be surmontable.

To those that got delayed, i can understand the feel but you will need to cool off alittle. The outcome of the application is emotionally traumatising in itself already. While we re-strategize for a better re-application. I'll advice you stop further addressing of the refusal. Take a day or two to allow the process of going through the emotions (which is normal for any human faced with such issue), try to forget what went wrong or not. The next step should be the center point which i will suggest ordering of GCMS note ASAP. You will feel better after few days and especially when we don't dwell so much on what might have gone wrong.

We go still put one or two things that was missing together and everything will be fine soon. Certainly not the end of things. Just a little challenge that will be addressed soon. Nothing spoil.

Please, let's all just relax and leave further posts about what we all think till the GCMS file is out. This is my opinion though, anybody can suggest differently. I'm still una boy!

Not impossible. Just extremely competitive. Some schools would consider an applicant's academic strength(especially the last phase of undergrad) in relative areas of program before there is a likelyhood of being admitted with a degree lower than their minimum requirement.

It's well. It's quite unfortunate the visa officer didn't see it this way. I still think you should look out for schools that would consider the last two years of your undergraduate especially the not so competetive schools.

Your profile begs for a master degree. Both your undergrad and work experience have seen consistency. You have a good profile. The VO probably didnt see a need for a PGD since it is not a new area or field to you.

A master will in the eye of the VO make you more competitive owing to your profile. Like its known already, most PGD/PGC program in canada are work place tailored and would see people who want to lunch their entry into the market place or a new area go for these programs. You have shown progression in your field already so a PGD may not be advantageous to you(in the VO's eye)

Truly sorry about the delay. Just try to pull through, see if you can get a masters in this field(this is only what you need) and soon, you would have forgotten this moment.

Your first degree and work experience is related. So you need to go for a higher degree like a master's. If previous studies and work experience was not related, you can go for a pgd in your work experience field. This is what I gathered from this study permit research I have been doing.

Lol, I just concluded a project for my msc in the uk. I should know better than to plagarise someone else's work. The write up gave me a clearer view of the relationship between my previous degrees and the intended one. And by the way, I was talking about how to convince the VO with the relationship Thanks for the back up.

I just found a beautiful preface from a thesis submitted for Msc in Disability Studies by a pharmacist. Her topic was "Perspectives on the Use of Medications in Aging Population". It was submitted at the University of Manitoba where I'm awaiting an admission. I can use that as a template.

For my nephew, can I just apply and say he's my nephew and I'm responsible for him, or adopt him first?

I can't say if you can use it or not. The issue of plagiarism is a serious offence dealing with canadians. So if you decided to use it, ensure you make appropraite reference to the original owner of the work.

Will adopting him make you feel more responsible for him and feel better? If so, fine. It's totally up to you. The visa officers will be more interested in the welfare and responsibility for the individual you include as a dependant. So which ever works for you, ensure you back up all claims with documentary evidence.

I recently got study permit for a two years master's program (Control Systems) at University of Alberta in Canada to commence 5th of September 2017.

I am currently working in a multinational manufacturing company here in Nigeria and recently got an outstanding appraisal report that sees my pay upto NGN 550K monthly.

I have four years experience in the field of Control Systems (Automation Engineer and Instrumentation Engineer in two household name multinational firms).

If I go for the masters I would sponsor myself, and the cost is quite high. But with a PR the cost would drastically reduce.

Now the questions:

Is it possible to start the application for EE entry while I am already in Canada? (As I plan to get my transcript sent to WES before leaving for the masters program)

would you advise based on the experience of those already in Canada, I quit my job for the masters with the hope of securing a PR and good job over there?........CC @Mazuide,Austinpee4,Osemigho, Just wise and the full house. Yes, it is possible to apply for PR through the various ways as a student in canada.
The applicant MUST meet the requirements of the EE application which is usually non-dependent on the temporary resident status. IRCC have clarified this and provided useful guidiance for people seeking such intent.

I did not overstay in the UK, left before my student visa expired and spent one month when I went for my graduation this year with my baby.
I don't want to leave my 14months old so I was thinking I should apply with him and my nephew. My husband can apply separately at least. I'm on the adoption process. It's quite expensive and stressful but I think that's the only way out.
As for the schools, I have sent to lecturers from many universities, I have gone as far as calling them after the emails.
MSc in Disability Studies is an interdisciplinary course, students from the sciences go for it. I don't want to stay out of education so my decision. This year is the only one I haven't been involved in academics since I was born.
My husband will declare that he overstayed with the following reasons:
he just got married and his wife was pregnant and would not have anyone to help during pregnancy, labour and after. He left two weeks after I put to bed. Just asking if that won't be a problem for him.

For your question no.5

Your husband appears to have good hometies and travel history which is an advantage for him. Going for a vacation would require him applying for a visiting visa and meeting all the requirements for it. This will include but not limited to a letter explaining his purpose of visit, invitation letter(if he is being hosted by somebody in canada) sufficient funds for stay, flights and hotel reservation(most times, flight and hotel reservation are visiting visa application requirement). His chances will be like everybody that have his kind of profile. The main thing will be to convince officers that he indeed will stay temporary and return after the stay. To your response post,
Your study permit application form will have questions for you directly and not for your husband. So if you did not overstay a previous visa, was refused a visa or permit, answer appropriately. Also advice your husband that should he eventually apply for a visa to canada, he SHOULD NOT conceal any prior immigration history/case. If he explains what happened convincingly, i don't think it will be a problem. They will still find out what happened, so it will be better he disclose everything to give credibility to his personality. This is really important especially with canada.

If you have sufficient funds, can convince officers that your 14 months old baby and nephew going to canada with you would not affect your primary purpose which is to study, then you can apply alongside them. Kindly note that convincing a VO would involve you showing additional funds and explaning pre-arrangement to have both minors looked after why you indulge in your study. However you decide to do this, it must be extremely convincing.


The elephant in this whole plan is how you will prove to the visa officer that your program in disability studies is actually what you need and what would advance you in your career/profession. The onus and burden will really be on you to convincingly put this before them in a cogent way. If you do not and with all the formation regarding travelling with your kid and nephew, things may work against you. You may be seen as a migrant rather than a bonafide student who intend to complete study and depart at end of stay.

So while you wait for the offer of admission, i'll suggest you begin to work around startegies that will sell your case very well to the officer. It is not IMPOSSIBLE, but the ball will be in your court to do a very good job.

Depending on what you are going for in canada. If it's a graduate program, you don't have to worry so much about the waec certificate for visa application as your offer letter and degree certificate/ transcript are the important documents you will need. If it's an undergraduate program, then you will have to rectify the error or use a court affidavit to clearify the error made as you will need it for your visa application.

In all though, ensure you rectify discrepancies in your certificates and like the other moniker mentioned, it may come back to hunt you later on if you don't.

This will be largely dependent on the explanation of the gap from 2010 till time of application. If what applicant was engaged in is tangible enough and explain the situation, i don't think there will be a problem.

Main thing is that intent is necessary for advancement rather than situational or circumstantial.

I do not think "calculated risk" is anything to go with for canadian visa officers. An applicant MUST show and prove that he/she is a genuine student and that the primary intention is to study. The purpose of visit must reflect this singular intent. There is no two ways about it. The visa application stage is the 'nose-gate'

Hey guys, let me quickly mention this. I seem to be getting lots of questions regarding career change and time frames.

It is not a bad thing to seek a career change. However, it must be logical and from reasonable situation. Before you apply for a program that reflect a diferent path from your undergraduate study(in a case of graduate study), you should have spent atleast 12 MONTHS of activity(work,research, etc) in the area you intend to switch to. DO NOT make the mistake of thinking you can wake up one day and change career or field and then apply for a study permit with that.

You will be giving officers an express ground to refuse your application for purpose of visit if you do not show significant time spent in the area you are now pursuing further study.

Not even a well detailed, structured, 'queens english' proved SOP will salvage that intention. Like i keep indicating here, each applicant will most likely be treated like a potential migrant whether you show all the ties in nigeria, your state, clan or kindred. It is just the provisions of the IRCC act that compel a visa officer to ensure you have a tie back home and a good reason to return back home. This is standard for everybody applying under the temporary visa category. The first review will always be why you are going to canada to study, is it in reasonable light from what you studied or currently engaging in.

Visa officers don't use their mind to approve or refuse applications. They are guided by an ACT.( you see this mentioned in most correspondence from them) which also guide their discretion. They can be dragged to a law court if their judgement is out of these provisions. While we trust God and pray for a positive outcome, we should endeavour to CHOOSE RIGHTLY to avoid giving them any reason to test the microphone with our application. They are humans too and also trained to scrutinize applications especially coming from nigeria where majority have intention to migrate under the guise of study.

So please, ensure you choose programs that you have an extensive work or study( if you just graduated) in. By so doing, it will be an easy sail for you when your case is being reviewed and you meet other requirements for a study permit.

What you keep seeing is exactly what it is. You do not have a new message or an update of your application. Once there is one, it will definitely show on your account dashboard. The VFS tracking only shows you where your application is at a particular time.

Your 'MyCiC account update is where you should focus more on. That is where you will see real time update and messages about your application directly from IRCC.

from what i understand about medicals, there are two ways you can get it done - upfront or medical call
Upfron[/b]t is the one you do before the submission of your application, on completion of the medicals, a document will be given to you to attach to the application you will submit, this document is what i think will inform the VO assessing your application that you've done medical and the result will be called for from the hospital where you did it.

[b]Medical call is the one you will be asked to go and do when the VO has assessed your application to the level of medical and find out there is no medical result available. a document will be sent to you from CIC which you will take to any recognized hospital of your choice.

so if your medical test does not fall in between these two categories, i think it is not valid... the more knowledgeable people here will throw more light... ire oo...

There is no need for further knowledge here, you've said everything concerning both medical type of examination.

@ebby29, you'll have to wait and be instructed by CIC before you proceed for a medical examination since you applied before the test. This doesn't mean the medical examination you did is invalid.

I'm assuming you applied online for you to even have your passport to go for the medical examination. All the same, once you are instructed to proceed for the exams, reach out to the hospital you did the test and they will use the IME code generated by CIC to forward your result to them. You won't have to do the actual test again.

pls bros, i have some questions. a) what does cic mean by review of background checks (b) and eligibility check? what exactly are they checking for?

a) Review of background check means they are matching the information you provided with their records, if you previously commited a crime, refused a visa, ordered to leave a country, checking for any misrepresentation and if you are a threat to their security or on a wanted watchlist.

b) Review of eligibility means that they are checking if you ACTUALLY qualify for a study permit and if your application meet the requirements of the IRCC act.


The check for security, misrepresentation, health and everything that will ensure that you will not be of danger to canadians should your study permit be approved.

Most times, it is eligibility that some students fail to meet because their applications and condition does not meet the requirements of the IRCC act( sufficient funds, right courses, insufficient hometies, failure to convince an officer that primary intention is to study and that he/she will return after study) na here wey wahala dey most times! Other checks are just standard procedure for CIC.

If the Canadian customs and border protection rule is done at the first point of entry(like it's done in US) you are REQUIRED to pick your bags and do a drop off your selve. No bags would be transfered unless you get to your final destination and request for it (na my profession be this oh)So @austinepee if you are sure, then feel free to go ahead @Canadiannirse. But I remember vividly that my bags were tagged to Edmonton from 9ja but still picked up my bags in Toronto and did a baggage drop off at westjet but would check timatics and get back to u

You have a point @bold. Procedures have been changing over time.
Most recently though, air canada reached alot of agreement especially with the 5 star alliance members regarding international passengers and point of entry ease.
