segzy14: Yes, it is an acceptable way when ever you do concrete work and it is called concrete cover and concrete covers vary in size for slabs, columns e.t.c

Greetings to all in da house, Yea concrete cover is very important to all reinforced concrete members. for instance in slab the acceptable cover is btw 25 mm- 30 mm. if the cover is too much there will be a challenge when the building is put into use. cos by so doing you have reduced the effective depth of the slab for instance if the adequate depth of your slab is 15 0mm then less the cover the effective depth is 125 mm so if your cover is 50-mm then you have effective depth of 100 mm which MAY not be sufficient for the anticipated load. Also if your slab is not having cover then the plaster under it will keep falling and exposing the reinforcement to moist that will lead to rusting.
It is also worth noting hat you concrete biscuits is of the same strength with your slab produced in ratio 1:4 well in advanced before slab preparation in other to allow for curing.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: THE BUILDING IS SEMI DETACHED BUNGALOW ON A FULL PLOT OF LAND, THE BUILDING CONSIST OF EXECUTIVE 3-BEDROOM FLAT ALL ENSUITE, WITH ENTRY PORCH, ANTE ROOM, STUDY,DINNING, VISITOR'S TOILET, LARGE SITTING ROOM (6m X 6m) ALSO ALL THE ROOMS ARE PRETTY OK. THE OTHER FLAT IS 2-BEDROOM ALL ENSUITE WITH VISITOR TOILET, DINNING, AND STANDARD ROOMS.
tHE BUILDING DIMENSION IS 25.4m X 12.825m. THIS BUILDING IS DESIGN IN SUCH THAT IF THE CLIENT WISHES THE 2-BEDROOM FLAT CAN BE CARVED OUT WITHOUT HAVING INTERFERENCE WITH 3-BEDROOM FLAT.

PROJECT BUDGET : PAY AS YOU GO i:e THE ESTIMATE IS BASED ON PHASE. THE PHASE WE ARE WORKING ON NOW IS THE FOUNDATION THE COST BREAK DOWN WILL BE RELEASED AT THE END OF THE PHASE.

DURATION: FOUNDATION-2 WEEKS.

@kopell i agree wt you, i did something of such i recently. I placed my local mason over them and i secretely told him as his carrying out d supervisory role he shld learn their technique. Now the guy can do the plasterinf better than this imported masns. The problem is hw many f our local masns are ready to learn? O wish i can get many local artisans to train on finishing wrks

kopell: @Brabus can you give us the detail of rectification procedure you used to rectified the problem, before you arrived at the picture shown. I comment your talent if it true as being said above that you're a computer science graduate practicing civil construction engineering. It great to have people like you in our society, that proved yourself in economic situation like ours in Nigeria will not pull you down in doing some thing els if the system fail to provide opportunity in line of your profession. A little advice for you in this line of field you choses to practice, take some advice management courses in quoting and negotiation of contracts without compromising quality. As professional you alway stick to your gun when it's come to quality, your client may being looking at cost, you should be able to convince him of the conscious of cutting corners. One mistake is to much of the same.

I have just found out that we have just wasted our time and megabytes on this tread as i am sure that the client has accepted whatever comes his way. We do not see the progress of correction work done,only for us to see the Oversite concrete. It was evident that all our advises and recommendation were thrown to the trash as i can still see that the columns still remain 6" x 6" (150mm x 150mm). Of course they will now increase the columns to 230 x 230 after the German floor. I don not want to waste my megabytes any more i sign out of this tread right away.

Brabus is a contractor and not a builder, not an engineer nor an Architect, His real field is computer science, i have read this in one of his post. Now being a computer scientist is not a problem as any one can be a contractor as long as you have the flair, time and capacity (financial and personnel)unfortunately this guy did not engage any professional in his contracting firm who can provide him some engineering backings and he would not have this kind of problems.For this kind of contractor client pays more as the contractor would like to make up to 25% profit in other to pay all the personnel in their team.

@spyder880 i have suggested this same idea you just brought up earlier on in this tread, i called it hunch base: where you create another bese and stater columns on existing base, i see no flaws in what you just said. Brabus should pick constructive criticism and go ahead with the correction of this foundation, I wonder why people are calling for pulling down the foundation because of 6 inches block. professionals in da house i am sure you will agree with me when 6 inches block filled solid has a stronger strength than the hollow 9 inches block. All brabus need do is to correct the columns and filled solid. Best of Luck.
