Music/Radio › Beyonce And Our Weeping Compatriots by ayobase(op): 4:58pm On Mar 05, 2009
Have things really changed after
the lamentation of Marie Steve?
Wondering!!!

Beyonce and our weeping compatriots
By Marie Steve
THE Senate President, Mr. Ken Nnamani, promptly rose
and led his entourage to the Music Festival organised
by ThisDay to celebrate Nigeria's 46th Independence.
It was a call to duty and he had to be on hand to
welcome our brothers and sisters from America. That
was when Beyonce brought Nigerians and many of our
senators to tears when she sang the National Anthem in
her resonant voice. The two-day music extravaganza
featured African-American hip hop stars such as Jay Z,
Missy Elliot, Ciara, Snoop Dog. It was a truly
emotional 'home-coming' for many of them. Why, Beyonce
could pass for a Calabar princess, and Jay Z for an
Ijebu man!

Nigerian artistes were paraded beside their American
brothers, and for many of them it was an overwhelming
experience. They too did not disappoint the audience,
though it can be tough to prove yourself when you have
to compete with American artistes in a borrowed
American style. After all D'Banj cannot be more
American than Jay Z, nor Weird M.C than Missy Elliot.
I was born into the pop culture myself, and I grew up
enjoying pop music, still, it is not quite right that
it was this heavy American hip hop diet that Nigerians
were treated to at the Independence Musical Festival.
Yes, there was a sprinkling of King Sunny Ade, and a
simulation of Fela by his son Seun, but for a show
that was designed to celebrate Nigeria, could that not
have been a constipating overdose of American hip hop?

The Government officials ostentatiously flowing in and
out of the venue did not seem to think so. When have
our senators and government officials trouped out in
such great numbers to welcome a Nigerian who has done
the country proud? I wonder how many of them sent so
much as a greeting to Yerima who just won the NLNG
prize for Literature. Yet our owambe senators put on
their dancing shoes and poured out en masse to welcome
American hip hop in the guise of an Independence Day
celebration.

Perhaps the organisers of the event did not think that
Beyonce and her American brothers would have been
thrilled to see a Bata dance from Ibadan, or the
Swange from Benue? Might it have been a trifle
'local'? Nigeria's rich cultural dances were quietly
locked away in some dusty cupboard lest the visitors
found them. We sometimes cannot recognise
opportunities to contribute to globalisation. The
organisers missed a wonderful chance of bringing the
ancient and the new together in an amazing African
renaissance. But that is no surprise. The imported and
the foreign have always appealed to us more than what
is home-made and indigenous. Beyonce and her Missy
Elliots may be great performers, but how does that
celebrate Nigeria's Independence if Nigerians cannot
even show them the pride of the black heritage?

Our lawmakers have just endorsed these hip hop figures
as role models for Nigerians, especially the young. I
wonder how many of them ever saw Beyonce's semi-nude
picture on the cover page of Ebony? I doubt if any
official would dare to stand beside Anita Hogan for a
snapshot, yet one of our governors and his wife
proudly flanked Beyonce for a picture that made the
front page of a Nigerian daily. Pop stars have excited
millions of people, sometimes even to dangerously
hysterical levels but they lack the power to transform
minds in any constructive way. The real stars are
truly enduring people that can move civilisation in a
positive direction. Wild dancing, foul language,
flimsy dressing and the 'stars' that symbolise them
belong in the ephemeral world of frolic which fades
and is soon forgotten.

What do these hip hop artistes sing about? Lurid sex,
murder, empty boastful words, ghetto violence, drug
abuse, all conveyed in gestures which many of our own
artistes strenuously imitate. There is a distressing
trend of companies now making it their corporate
social responsibility to bring these characters into
the country as 'entertainment'. This ends up
projecting a borrowed hip hop culture while our own
indigenous cultures wither. There are too few
companies promoting local Nigerian dance, which is
just as in danger of extinction as much talked about
endangered animal species. Many Beyonces have come and
gone, but some of our young people will never enjoy an
Atilogwu or Nkpokiti dance because these have been
swept under the carpet.

Next time when we roll out the drums to celebrate
Nigeria, let us be sincere enough to proudly show her
glorious colours.

Christianity Etc › Re: A Question For Tithe Payers by ayobase(m): 3:48pm On Mar 05, 2009
the truth of the matter is this
You pay ur tithe or not,
the work of God will never suffer
any form of defficiency.

Paying of tithe as God commanded,
Gos is only giving you a chance to be
a beneficiary of somethings.

Some blessing has nothing to do with
whether one is born again or not.

Obeying ur parents,
there is a blessing attached to,
'Long Life and Prosperity."

When you dont obey your parents,
then we all know what the problem will be.

Some premature deaths could be
traced to diobeying of parents.

Another one is GIVING.
there is no way u will lack when
you are cheerful giver.
This also doesnt demand being
born again or not.

So many and many "Do this and
I will do this"

The tithe issue is not an exception
it is not a must to pay your tithe,
but want you to remember that not
paying of one's tithe means one
has stolen what belong to god

we should then remember that no thief
I mean no thief shall inherit the kingdom
of God.

Those that pay tithe will surely have somethings to say
about how they are being favoured in one way
or the other,

How much does it cost one's tithe.
just 10%, if not for greed.

remember what happen to an animal
when that Insulin/Pancreas bursts?
The animal will never be delicious.

Tithe is also like that, when u eat what belongs
to God, then u wouldnt enjoy the spending,

Sometimes, one would just wonder how
he spent 100K.
To give account will be as difficult as
forcing a river up the hill.

Just give what belongs to God and
stay with urs.

He never demanded for 20%, but 10%.

How do u even apprecite your God,
the giver of your life who keeps u up till date?

Do us say its just Fate or mere Coincidence.
We shall See.

U better start giving ur tithe so as to be blessed!!!

@ Poster:

I should think traffic signals (stop lights) have the same meaning worldwide.
Red=Stop (time for Peds to walk)
Green=Go
Yellow = Prepare to stop

However, I think it’s ok to go through the yellow flashing light but with caution. Just make sure the road is clear and pedestrians are not crossing the road. However, I always find myself “mashing” gas when I see that yellow light flashing just to get through before it turns red or green.

I usually stop at the Red light but once in a blue moon I am a red light jumper (once there is no traffic signal camera around and the road is clear) Last year I went through a red light not realizing the car behind me was a Po-Po car. They pulled me over and warned me.

If you ask me, I think they should have lessons for pedestrians, seriously. Coz, there are some careless and aggressive pedestrians who cross against the traffic lights. Some even take the risk while pushing a baby in a stroller. Then they (pedestrians) have the audacity to “roll-eyes” at you while taking their precious time walking across the street. Sometimes, I am like “HELLO!!! (foot on the gas), grin

First and foremost and brief self introduction,I am Miss Jenifer Agurma ,22years old and the only daughter of my late parents Mr.and Mrs. Mark G Agurm My father was a highly reputable business magnate-(a cocoa merchant)who operated in the capital of LIBERIA during his days be he was poisoned to by his business associates in one of their outings on a business trip. Our mother died when we were babies and since then was linked or rather suspected to have been masterminded by his relatives who was so jealous of his wealth and progress. But God knows the truth!
Before the death of my father in August 2005 he called the secretary who accompanied him to the hospital and told her that he had a sum of $3.5 million US DOLLARS (Three million five hundred thousand USD) Bank He said he used my name to Deposit the money with the bank as his only daughter, as well as the next of kin to the money.
He also explained that it was because of this wealth that he was poisoned by his relatives, that I should seek for a foreign partner in a country of my choice where I will transfer this money to and use it for investment purposes.
I want you to assist me transfer the money to your account as i explain to you that this money was deposited in the bank and make me the next of kin to the money .I am just 22 years old and a high school leaving certificate holder and really don't know what to do.Now I want a guardian outside Senegal where I can transfer this fund and equally come over to further my education because it is one of the instructions that my father left for me. This is because I have suffered a lot in my life after the death of my father actually brought sorrow to my life. My dear,I am in a sincere desire of your humble assistance in this regards.Your suggestions and ideas will be highly regarded.
Now permit me to ask these few questions:-
1. Can you honestly help me as your daughter or friend?
2. Can I completely trust you?
3. What percentage of the total amount will be good for you after the money is in your position?
Please,Consider this and get back to me as soon as possible, as well I will like you to forward your private telephone so that i will give you the contact of the bank where this money was deposited.I am looking forward to hear from you, please do not turn me down because you are the Gods sent that can help me out.
Thank you so much.

Home Sweet home, Naija.
We are always reversing the
isssue of Rules,Regulations,Commandments,
Orders,Laws,Presciptions,and Judgements here.

Well to answer ur question,

Green light depicts GO
Red light depicts STOP
Yellow light depicts GET READY TO GO/STOP

When it goes from Green to Yellow,
it simply means get ready to Stop

When it goes from Red to Yellow,
it simpy means get ready to Go.

But here in Naija, everyone disobeys the rules
well, it might no be everyone,
but 99% of Abuja inhabitants disobeys.
that I can say!!!!

When it is "Ready to Stop"
that is when u will see SOME drivers
gearing to 5 from 1.

And When it is "Ready to Go"
that is when U will see SOME drivers
already gone 500 meters.

Naija, no wonder police sits there only
to legally extort drivers due to diobedience.

There was one that was embarrassing,
a man in suit matched with tie in his "End Of Discussion"
had to be apprehended by the police due to
diobeying the traffic rules.

Naija,
hey which one of u does that also?
