Hello great people.. I have a little problem and I know you guys will help me. I applied to George brown college and after sending them the scanned copy of transcript they said they need the official from my school but my school said if they want to send it themselves it's going to cost 26k which is on the high side for me. I have an option to pay 12k and collect it myself and send via EMS at Nipost because it is much more cheaper. I want to ask if I send myself through nipost will they school reject it? Im using this medium because it's against may2016. Pls urgent advice is needed. Thank you everyone and happy Sunday to you all.
School won't reject it so far the seal is not tampered with. So use NIPOST, but u should know NIPOST will take about 3 to 5 weeks. It is cheap anyway, less than 500 naira, but try and register it, so u can track it; that will cost a few hundred box but definitely the sum shouldn't be up to 1k.

I got your pm but unable to reply unless you drop your mail and I'll send you.
How I did it,?. I won't lie to you, I sent more than 50emails to profs in my field, I suddenly became an active reader bro. I have downloaded Different professors publications(both the interesting, insightful, boring,&understandable ones) from ResearchGate digital library through their web pages. What I did was(Thanks to thesoj that directed me to the post), I read the publications and I looked at where I can improve on their lab. 99% of replies I got was Dear Jkakeside, Your backgrounds on Xxxx sounds good but I'm not in the position to fund a new student for I have exceeded my fundings" or Dear Jlakeside, Thanks for showing interest in working in my lab but ......you know the rest... Until I got a slight positive response from 2-3 of them..

This is d kind of emails I sent

GoodMorning Prof XXXXXX

My name is Jlakeside from Nigeria. I studied BS Yoruba Education with CGPA of 9.99/10 from the University of Nairaland. I am presently preparing for graduate school education and I want to apply to the Igbo Dept at University of the Prof for an MSc Program. After going through your profile and publications, I find your work on "Bleep" interesting. I have vast knowledge & experience in Bleep during my undergrad years where I did X, Y, Z, blah blah blah.

I read one of your research works with Dr ganiyuadeoye et al,2012 on "Climate change and green house gases". I found it on the Research gate digital library (www.researchgate.net/climate_green_*****). I find this insightful and interesting. I was particularly fascinated by the effect of climatic conditions on dormancy and regeneration by xxxxxx(refer to what you read on his/her publication.).

Sir, I saw some interesting questions while reading it and I was much concerned about "What is the interaction between dormancy break and smoke-stimulated germination with fire intensification?". There are some gases such as Bleep in the family Bleep which practically require fire to crack its coat leaving the unharmed in dormancy breaking(you gast know what you really wanna ask since you have a diverse knowledge in that area). I understand that dormancy breaks and germinate under so many certain auspicious climatic condition and long monitoring of these favourable conditions should be part of ecophysiological studies in future BUT can it be done using FV8889 solution?(here, this is what you planning to bring to his/her lab, he/she hasn't done it or he/she had done it and you came up with another idea to move the research into another realm). Could this work be extended towards this regards? Do you think it will be a worthwhile to pursue this line of research?.

I'd like to know if you would be accepting new graduate students for Winter 2025. Thank you very much for your time. I hope we have the chance to speak about the research in future.

Hope to hear from you soon
Regards

Jlakeside Nairaland..

The thing is, you have to be sure of what you're asking and writing,. Orelse the prof will think otherwise, and if he/she has an ongoing research which he/she needs students, just go and read on related research that has been done..make Google your friend,. I'm sure you will come across one and ask him how you can improve on the project... Have it in mind that 90% will say NO, 5% will be like "OK, apply let's see how it goes from there, and the remaining 5% will give u a green light.. Never say never, keep mailing others if one rejects
impressive!!! I appreciate people who do their homework very well, and not lazy to do what it takes to achieve their goals. Unlike those that run to nairaland for ready made everything....Statement of Purpose, choice of program, letter of explanation. .....dem fit ask you for your Study Permit sef, to say e dey transferable. ....
well done and congratulations

funny you, why will complain about long stories, am happy you gave me your time to explain in detail.thanks so much.
about the medicals, I did it at the CONSULTANTS PRACTICE so like you said, I might be charged have the price but will I wait till after the embassy requests for a medical or I can ask for my previous medical results now and use it as upfront medical (because of the new IME number).
secondly, is letter of introduction and letter of explanation the same? cos I only submitted letter of introduction.
thanks expecting your response soon
U're welcome. No, wait until you get called for medicals. You can also include the receipt from ur first medical assessment (the one u got from consultant practice) and the medical form (the one you got from cic the last time) in your new application, perhaps it may fly, but I doubt it anyway.
Letter of introduction is of two types.
1. Letter of introduction from your employer to the embassy
2. Letter of introduction from embassy to Port of Entry

While letter of explanation is the one you write in support of your application to explain confusing or controversial issues in your application to the visa officer.
My opinion

I actually chose M.Eng to save myself the stress of looking for a supervisor who will hardly respond to your email. For the first application(UofM) I did, perhaps I was naive not to value the importance of a good SOP. But for the second(UofR), I'm sure it was excellent at least from the views of my former colleagues now in top US schools. The only aspect I may not be too sure of is the academic references. Of my two referees, one is a Dr. while the other is doing his PhD. Could that be an issue as opposed to using Profs? I no get Professor friends oh.
Mba o, I used a Dr too and the second was my Chaplain in school.

It seems getting MSc admission into Canadian Universities is a 'big deal'. I've applied to two schools now but wasn't admitted; UofManitoba(Mech Eng.) & UofRegina(Pet. Eng). I wouldn't know what they really want but I know those are at least not the top five ranked schools in Canada for which makes me wonder why they reject like that. After coming up with a good SOP, academic references, CGPA of 4.2/5.0 (Mech Eng), meticulously filling their application forms; One wonders what they really from me again! Them jus dey wack my $100 sha..
Sorry to disappoint you sir, but getting admission is not entirely a function of ur cgpa. And to shock you more, what u consider high cgpa, may actually not be high when you have more than 50 applicants having higher grades and the dept can only take 30 or 40. You can't get into some programs directly, except you go through PGD, because they are too competitive. For some programs, you need to get a supervisor before you can be accepted, if you don't have a supervisor, u won't be accepted. And for some other programs, you just need to put in more effort in your SOP and make sure your referees write something good about you. So try and contact the school/dept before wasting another 100 dollars, ask questions and be sure what they really want.
Don't be discouraged, getting admission is not as difficult as you think......some of us got it at our first attempt.....and come to think of it, my CGPA is lower than yours....lol
Lastly, if you say getting admission is difficult, what will you say about getting visa? So it is too early to be discouraged sir!

goodday Nlanders please I really need your advice and quick response on this
I was denied last week due to personal asset and financial status. am reapplying next month so I want to ask
1: if I can use my last medical as an upfront medical for my new application? if YES how can my medical result get to the embassy cus it will be a paper application.
2: like I said earlier I was denied because of my personal asset and financial status. my uncle is my sponsor and a SOA of #9.2m. so I will submit the documents of a building I inherited as my personal asset so how much can I have in my personal account for my own SOA?
No u can't use ur former medical result, except if it was an upfront medicals u did the last time and it was not attached to any ime. But if u had your medicals after medical mail, I'm afraid u may have to do another medical exam, because your old IME to which your result was linked will definitely be different from the new IME u'll be given in ur next app. However if you did your assessment at Consultant practice, they may charge u half of the medical exam fee (14k), and then transfer your old result on the former IME to the new IME, with that you won't do any test again, but just e-medicals.

About ur 2nd question, you need to know that "personal asset and financial status" is totally different from "insufficient funds". People don't understand that fact and hence miss them for each other, thereby tackling the wrong thing. "Insufficient funds" is given when the VO is not satisfied an applicant has enough funds (that is when the closing balance in the SOA submitted is low, or an applicant did not establish relationship with sponsor, or the sponsorship letter/claims is not convincing). In short, it deals with sponsor's finance.

But "personal asset and financial status" mostly does not come alone, comes with purpose of visit and some other nasty/upsetting/annoying reasons. It does not mean an applicant does not have enough finance for his/her study in Canada; that is why u see someone with 20m closing balance still getting refused on "personal asset and financial status" grounds......biko, na one billion VO wan see for hin acct?
So in short, "personal asset and financial status" simply means an applicant's financial standing. Most people that get this kind of reason are those that either claimed they have been working for some time in their application, or have an academic gap in their academic history, without showing proofs (in terms of good personal SOA, personal assets or anything that can show how and what they've been using their salaries for) that they have indeed been working and the job pays well. Or cannot explain what he/she has been actually doing (through a comprehensive Letter of Explanation), even if not in a regular employment, so as not to be perceived as an idle lazy man or woman who just wanna go to Canada in search of a greener pasture.

Please dont mind my long sermon, just sharing my opinion, and I hope it helps.

Good morning all, I am writing on behalf of a friend. This is the issue:

please I need suggestions and advice regarding this, submitted application, paper route some 5 weeks ago. Tracked the application after the 3rd week and the information was that the "application is being processed in Ghana". Tried to check the status of the application a week later by tracking and the response is "No record found" and it's been like this till this morning. I initially thought it's was because I am using phone, l was at the cafe yesterday, and it was the same. I even had someone to assist that perhaps I am not picking the correct reference number, but the result is the same. Please what do l do. I have received no communication nor information since I submitted.

I look forward to your suggestions and advice. Many thanks
Well I dont wanna say it's impossible, but u might actually be clicking on the wrong processing center. For instance, if your app is being processed in Ghana and u selecting Abuja or Lagos, u might av issh. If however u're sure you didn't make that mistake, I'll advise you wait until it's past 8 weeks, then open a case enquiry.

Travelling Tip #2: PORT OF ENTRY(POE) ISSUES, DEPORTATION AND THE PROMISE LAND

Receiving your study permit approval from the CIC and finally preparing to arrive in Canada ought to be the most memorable experience in the life of a student. Often at times, the experiences are unforgettably disastrous for some people. I will share some experience gathered from friends on this topic and give a layman's advice on the best way to deal with it. If anyone ever saw Tom Hank's 2004 movie ' The Terminal" you may have an idea of how immigration checks at the port of arrival into a developed country. How will you feel if after a 20hrs long flight, you see your PROMISE land (Canada) but fail to enter ? How does deportation scare anyone? The answers are not far-fetched. A Port Of Entry( POE) is the legal entry point into a country (in this context your arriving airport where the immigration officers interrogate your documents before issuing you your study permit/work permit. Often, at times, students for some reasons best know to them choose the wrong flight routes or arrival destination airports. Lets look at this scenario, A student who is due to school in a university in Abuja books a flight with MM1 as his final destination. Any immigration officer will be suspicious. Why not arrival in Abuja but Lagos? why dont you have any connecting flight? An even better example is this. A student heading to a school in Halifax, Novas Scotia in the far Northern parts of Canada made Pearson Intl Airport In Ontario (way South) his final destination..Such a student has left himself opened to be devoured. Why not a connecting flight to Halifax, but Pearson in Toronto? What are your reasons? The stammering begins and the emotional and psychological demeanor is obviously exposing at this point. At this point, your fate is in the hands of the officer and your God. If your answers are unconvincing as was in the case of a lady yesterday in Toronto, then deportation is the result. You are at the border of Canaan, but cannot enter. Oya back to Lagos.

What you must know is the following:

1.Your letter approving your study permit you received in Nigeria from the CIC is not an authorization of AUTOMATIC entry into Canada
2. You have not gotten your study permit until it is issued to you by the immigration officer at the airport in Canada. What you carried all this while was a mere introductory letter and a visa to allow you to be processed for entry into Canada
3. If your final arriving destination is unreasonably far from your school or province you are likely to be interrogated, and worse case scenario deported.
4. Thousands of people arrival in Canada by the minute. Staying in an immigration queue at the airport awaiting your immigration process can be the most nerving moment in your travel tale. You are in a queue with arabs, aisans and other races. While some of these students enjoy the comapanionship of their parents or friends, you are rather alone by yourself in the queue intimidated by the mere look at how the officers attend and scrutinize those students before them. Your emotional, psychological and articulation balance will all be shaped by this bizarre atmosphere. Remember that the immigration officers have been psychologically trained to detect misinformation, lies..etc in your communication and documentation. Be well composed when in the queue and before the officer..Be consistent and straight forward in your answering.

Even though some students from Nigeria may have intentions of not really attendning the school upon arrival or have other agendas, You must not not choose the wrong destination points for final arrival. If your School is in Newfoundland, I beg pls use a connecting flight to get there...But wait? what if i have not much funds and I decided to stop over in say Toronto Or Montreal in Quebec and pick a bus to my school which is few hours drive? well, you must be ready to answer this concisely to the officer when he pokes such questions at you. If possible show him/her proof that you already booked a bus or car for that transit.. I know two guys of friends of mine who were painfully deported upon arriving in Pearson, Toronto (instead of Edmonton, Alberta) and Montreal, Quebec (instead of St. Johns, Newfoundland). Na your groundnut u dey go harvest for Montreal or Toronto? Maybe u dey go spend time with your long time borobor abi?

I HOPE THIS HELPS. HAVE FUN
Really make sense. Thanks

You don't need to book a return ticket for Canada, except if it's a visitor's visa you have, but for study permit, u should be fine. it's US that is strict and require a return ticket. But booking a return ticket on some airlines may be cheaper than one way....so just search for both and go for the cheapest

Purpose of visit and length of stay In most cases do not mean the actual number of days or months in Canada. The VO was probably not satisfied about your purpose of visit or intentions for traveling to Canada. Most time it happens if there's an academic gap before going to study in Canada, or if the course u going for in Canada is diff from ur undergrad, or your work experience is diff from either ur undergrad or the course u going for or both.......

How do you intend to get the money you'll pay when u get to Canada? Because I think the easiest way is to change to usd in Naija and then change to cad in Canada, and I think that's even more expensive. If we say naira will appreciate, but falls the more nko? And unfortunately banks have stopped or suspended BTA and PTA because of the fluctuations in Naira, so the surest bet is buying from black market, which is not friendly at all. So I think it's best u pay with ur card, at least it's more friendly than black market rates.

Hello kriss, I understand the zeal to help others as this thread was very helpful to me as well...kudos to you
The last part about food ...please dont take that hook line and sinker because if you're caught with the any edibles and didn't declare you will be in much more trouble
I am not big on travelling with foods cos I feel no matter how much it will still finish
But if you're someone that will stock enough pls its better to declare ...I know friends that declare whenever they come in and they were not delayed or scrutinized
At most they will be confiscated but not declaring is more risky especially if you have in large amounts
I was about saying that. It is risky to lie about what you're carrying. It is not wrong to travel with food items, of course u r a student and u need food. Please it is okay to declare, worse case scenario is to confiscate anything they consider as threat (buh no carry hard drug o, na jail be dat o lol). You may have issues with drugs (as in medicine) too, as some may ask you for doctor's prescription, but what me did the last time I traveled with antimalaria and antibiotics, I hid the small bag carrying the drugs inside my suit....lol. And as regards money, it's not wrong to declare too, but try not to have up to 10k dollars in cash (not sure u need to declare any cash less than 10k). And if you do, it is still not a crime, u are a student and u have bills to pay, so please don't panic. I heard of a guy that was sent back from POE to naija because of false declaration. And lastly, I love the part that u should make important docs handy, it is really important and try to be as organized and composed as possible.

But my candid advice, if you dont have access to scanner or cant scan or merge documents properly, pls do paper, else do online.
All the best
