Sincere9gerian: Did you check the date of your link? Why are you posting links of reports written during the last ASUU strike? My guy, things have moved far beyond your silly link. In case you dont know, the ASUU strike was later called off and govt released the first disbursement of N200 billion, which is already being accessed by the various schools.Oga the point is simple we have issues with the current universities and instead of the government addressing it, its adding to the problem. Quality triumphs quantity every time. Building more universities doesn't solve the half-baked graduate issues in Nigeria does it? For the last time, the people who go to Ghana don't do so because they can't get admission in Nigeria. It is easier and cheaper to get admission to a private university in Nigeria than in Ghana. |
F117A: Okay maybe that is the wrong word but it doesn't change my point. No poor primary and secondary schools created that. I repeat, universities are not for everybody. Jaguar, Airbus and Rolls Royce have apprentice programs where they employ people straight out of high school and train them. Now imagine a country where graduates are unemployable what then is the faith of secondary school graduates. Polytechnics and Technical school also have a role to play but because Nigerians are so focused on paper certificates, we think being educated means being a graduate. |
Sincere9gerian: If you continue fuming all over the place you'll only die of hate.http://www.channelstv.com/2013/12/03/ASUU-strike-fresh-demands-do-not-make-sense-okupe/ Which facts are you talking about? N200 billion that's about 10% of what ASUU asked for during their last strike? By the way, can you tell the whole Nairaland how much ASUU asked for during the last strike? Please show me the facts that show Nigerians go to Ghana because of lack of space. PS: i know lots of people that left Nigerian universities to Ghana during the 2003 strike..... Waiting for your facts |
F117A: That is being simplistic.Universities have nothing to do with illiteracy/literacy. Universities are not meant for everyone. All the people need is quality primary and secondary education. |
F117A: And how many unis are in those countries?Thats the point some of us are making. Its better to have 4 standard universities than have 100 mediocre universities. We haven't solved the problems of the old ones and we are building more. |
Sincere9gerian: Bad belle no go kill you. Over 70,000 Nigerians are currently in higher institutions in Ghana because of inadequate access to higher education in Nigeria.Big lie, they are in Ghana because Ghanaian universities are better and there are no strikes Sincere9gerian: Besides, Kogi state had no federal university before now. That is not too good for a whole state. Now they have one, which provides job opportunities and access to higher education for qualified undergraduates.First its not compulsory to have a federal university in every state. Second quality trumps quantity any day. Third quality universities will produce quality graduates who would go on to produce more jobs.. a multiplier effect while poor universities has led to the unemployment situation we have today Sincere9gerian: As for the existing schools, the FG recently gave them N200 billion intervention fund. Part or a major problem in some of the schools is mis-management or mis-allocation of available resources. Besides, these universities should not perpetually depend on govt for funds. The management should creatively look for other sources of fundsASUU asked for N3 billion and the government couldn't give them and you are here talking about N200 billion? As for the 2nd part, when Fashola increased school fees, you called his government an elitist government, when he reduced it, you celebrated so how are the universities supposed to raise money? |
Only in Nigeria do people celebrate the building of Universities by a government that can't fund existing ones. Someone please explain the logic behind this to me. |
waecnigeria: NOTICE!NOTICE!!NOTICE!!!Why have the mods not banned this account and reported the owner of this phone number to any of the security agencies? |
UrbanMystique: www.nanobiosilver.com/howpeopleuse.htmlThe headline of that page says nano silver technology, which is exactly what i said. |
UrbanMystique: lol at Not a drug but a technology.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Nano |
UrbanMystique: I said if"Do you nano silver has been used in ac's, vacuum cleaners, washing machines and the likes since 2003? By the way, nano silver is not a drug its a technology and it wasn't developed by a Nigerian. |
Its funny how people here think a country that has put a man on the moon, has nuclear technologies is jealous of a country that doesn't even have portable water. Ebola just like sickle cell anemia is a disease that affects Africans majorly and Africans should be at the fore front of the research and not the whites. |
acorntree: The problem with our educational system is that we lay too much emphasis on theories rather than practicals. Most of the curriculum being taught still covers outdated topics which are no longer relevant to modern day . Garbage in garbage out.Can you back up the assertion you made with proofs? What has changed so much in engineering in the last 10/20/30/40/50 years that makes our curriculum outdated? What has changed so much in the sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) in the last 10/20/30/40/50 years that makes our curriculum outdated. If you say mode of instruction, i'll agree with you. PS: I'm talking university education here. |
2gbasky22: can a graduate of electrical engineering from any of Nigeria university design an electronic system?? Lets say maybe a pocket radioYes. Plenty. |
"bro, u Claim that in ur post that roofing is based on pythagoras theorem do these men know what dat theorem is? Did theu went through the kind of boring process u went through in learning pythagoras theorem? You or any other person who has gone through series of pythagoras theory classes, can u roof a house? U see what i mean when i say what we learn cannot be used in our everyday life " Its true that the carpenters did not study Pythagoras theorem but the Architects did and that's why the architects get paid more. "you also said electrical engineer are not supposed to fix lamp holders please tell me whose job it is??" People who go to technical school. |
Lol at mobilization fees |
"take mathematics for example, how is calculus or almighty formulae suppose to affect our day to day life? not to talk of X+X(Y-Z)1 find X bla bla bla...........for God sake how is that supposed to affect the way am to relate with the guy next door? (please save me the sermon of it making you think fast" This excerpt from your post shows that its not the educational system that's the problem but the student. If you are asking how mathematics is supposed to affect the way you relate with the guy next door, then you don't know what maths is all about and that is your problem not that of the educational system. "Our university system which is supposed to be the height of education is not even helping matter with the way they chunk theories that where propounded in the 15th and 16th century that are never put to practice through the throat of our undergraduates year in year out................little wonder a graduate of electrical engineering do know how to connect a lamp holder from a junction box" The so called theories that where propounded in the 15th and 16th century are still valid today and if you plan to make any meaningful impact in the world today especially in science and engineering, you need to know and understand those theories. PS: Electrical engineers are not supposed to connect lamp holders, they are supposed to design electrical systems. "My idea of what the curriculum should be is that we should be thought what we need for our everyday life. THINGS LIKE: how to create and manage wealth, nation building, peaceful coexistence, etc. And not some archaic history and laws that was propounded some 14th century ago " You don't go to school to learn how to create wealth, you go to school to gain knowledge which in turn might get you wealth. This is your problem and not that of the educational system. "The important of medicine and science cannot be over emphasized, then it should be thought with adequate practicals and exposure and not this copy and paste method that is holding sway in our fatherland " This is the only part that makes sense and the major problem is not from the curriculum but from the method and mode of instruction. Application of Mathematics for those who do not know Pythagoras Theorem: Roofing.. If you go to any building site during the roofing stage, you'd see the wood are arranged in the form of a triangle, most people including the carpenters don't know that its based on Pythagoras theorem. Sets and Graph: This topics are very important in the field of computer science. The Facebook feature 'people you might know' is based on graphs. Calculus:This is the foundation of engineering need i say more? |
atlwireles: To be fair to the DSS , political consideration and maintaining a low temperature election climate was more important, than arresting this person. You are correct, this person should have been arrested regardless. On a good day, i'd have asked why someone in the DSS was not sanctioned for this error but i'd let that pass and ask what did the DSS aim to achieve by announcing this to the press? Don't you think they've emboldened other politicians to try this 'stunt' since there's no punishment for trying to bribe the DSS? |
atlwireles: You don't care?? Then you are not been realistic. The lies of APC and their headlines will burn like wide fires, before DSS has an opportunity to say their side of the story. We don't live in a vacuum.I don't care what anybody would have said, the fact that the DSS didn't arrest the person means someone else will try next year and who knows what will happen then. You don't broadcast your incompetence to the world. Simple question If the allegation by the DSS is true, did the DSS do their job or not? Yes or No answer needed. |
atlwireles: Arrest a politician in Osun for bribery??. Describe what that headline will read in APC's news medias across the worldWho cares what the headline will read? Are you saying the DSS should not do its job because of some headline? |
Erm why is the CBN to offset the gas debt owned by the defunct PHCN? I thought the 'private' investors bought both the assets and liabilities ? |
It is a well known fact that bribery is illegal in Nigeria so if the DSS was offered a bribe and the person that offered the bribe was not arrested, then there is something wrong with the DSS The spokesperson of the DSS should be ashamed of herself. |
ZKOSOSO: You just spoke my mind. You can never see a typical hausafulani pushing hard for a christian northerners even from states where xtians are dominant for the position of a democratically electable president of nigeria. It will stop when people like you see religion as a private affair and should not be talked about in the politics section. |
solomakindees: When Jakande started LASU, it was absolutely free. When Fashola paid 16 Naira, what was the cost of fuel, housing, a bag of cement e.t.c |
naijababe: What business do universities have with halls of residence? It's no wonder they don't have any money and I suppose that's expected to subsidized too?I'm pretty sure they are subsidized(i'm not 100% sure). Nigeria is a capitalist country full of socialist citizens. |
naijababe: It is not so much of ignoring dignity of labour as much as many of us not wanting to pay fair wages. The average plumber or mechanic in the UK or US has his own business good employment laws ensure they are paid fair wages. I don't even it's occurred to any of our legislooters, never mind doing anything about it.Plumbers and mechanics in Nigeria can also be said to be self employed. The difference between the UK and Nigeria is the minimum wage in the UK applies to all and sundry, in Nigeria, it applies to only government workers. |
naijababe: This is one of the big underlying problems, there's no reason why manufacturing companies/banks, small retail firms, telcos cannot absorb many of students who end up with redundant degrees. Having said that, we have to stop treating our skilled labour workers so badlyThe bold would be very hard to do. Nigerians worship money while ignoring the dignity of labour so everybody wants to be rich irrespective of how the riches are gotten. This mentality is part of the reasons why artisans would not be respected afterall in the Nigerian society, who are they? |
mbulela: technical graduates have a lot of potential in our economy,if you believe NOI and her band of talkatives. In my first post, i mentioned that the LASU problem was a chicken-egg problem and that there are underlying issues that must first be dealt with. One of those underlying issues is the fact that artisans are looked down today in the country. Until they get the respect they truly deserve, the only people that would go through that route are those that have absolutely no choice. Can you imagine a the child of a middle class Nigerian telling his parents he doesn't want to go to the uni but to a technical college in the Nigeria of today? |
naijababe: Technical colleges and vocational institutes, apprenticeship schemes, perhaps?Who is going to employ the graduates of technical colleges when university graduates can't even get a job? One of the underlying problems i talked about is that Nigeria is a 'certificate based country'. People would rather just get a degree(any degree) than not go to school. |
The LASU situation is a 'chicken/egg' problem. Its true that university education should not be free but in Nigeria today, there are no jobs for graduates what would then be the faith of people who can't go to the university. Like with most things in Nigeria, there is a underlying problem that must first be fixed be real progress can be made. |
anonimi: The factory is located at Ojo on the Badagry expressway. It is the old Volkswagen of Nigeria (VON) plant. The factory like you said is the old VON plant and Stallion has been using that plant for ages. The actual price of the vehicles is what we should be concerned with along with the specifications. Nothing is on the stallion group website. I Just sent a mail to stallion group for more info. I'd update my post if i get a reply. |
ovadoze: Yeah let's continue to blame GEJ, yeah he should have been at the airport to turn back Mr. Sawyer, he should have developed cure for Ebola virus by now, infact GEJ was supposed to carry gun and enter Sambisa forest to kill members of the BH, he shouldn't have killed Yusuf the founder of the islamic sect(Yaradua did), he shouldn't have allowed Buhari to overthrow the civilian govt of Shehu Shagari, he shouldn't have allowed the military to rule us for that long, he enthroned corruption in Nigeria, yes he did, he liquidated most Nigerian owned companies (NITEL and Nigerian airways comes to mind), blame him when u have dysmenorrhea, blame him when ur lecturer takes bribe, he's supposed to tell Islamic radicals that they shouldn't kill their fellow human being in the name of religion, blame him for the death of morals in the country, blame him for causing the civil war, blame him for the laziness and ineptitude of Nigerians, blame him when u fail exams, blame him for nailing Christ to the cross, blame him for all the things that happened in Nigeria before he was born, blame him for the amalgamation of northern and southern Nigeria. Keep blaming him.GEJ is the president of Nigeria, he volunteered for the job and he should take responsibilities for his action and inactions. |
