Politics › Fashola Switches On The Lagos Festival Of Lights. PICS. Eko O Ni Baje O.... by babapupa(op): 12:50am On Dec 23, 2012 |
In an impressive blaze of colours, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday evening "switched on " the Lagos Festival of Lights to officially herald the holiday season with thousands of decorative lights from the entire stretch of the Marina through Ahmadu Bello Way to Bar Beach.Riding in the Open roofed Eko Tourist Bus from Marina through the stretch to Ahmadu Bello Way to the cheers and colourful displays of several groups who dotted the road, the Festival of Lights train arrived at the Akin Adesola junction of the Bar Beach which had been a centre point of a carnival like celebration to usher in the holiday season programme.
In his remark in a brief reception at the Bar Beach, the Governor said for the first time, Lagos State would be among the many global cities and states that would be under world focus and attention from 31st December to the New Year with the waterfront being the centre of activities.
According to the Governor, it would be a new year unlike any before now as people would be celebrating the New Year in Lagos with the whole world participating.
In his words: "It means much more tourism exposure, We are taking control of the beach and giving it a new meaning, You will see all of the vendor stands, so there would be a lot of business that would be going on there, there would also be a lot of party going on there".
The Governor added that: "For me it is investment, opportunities and possibilities coming together using one of our biggest resources and waterfront assets".
He also informed that there would also be a sea food festival where fresh fish, shrimps and all related sea food would be available at a good deal , stressing that there would be a lot of shopping that would be going on at the waterfront in the next few days.
Governor Fashola said on the 31st from around 6pm from the junction of Adeola Odeku to the Waterfront area only pedestrians would be allowed as there would be no vehicular activity there.
Assuring however that the countdown to the New Year has been designed to ensure wide participation, Governor Fashola said people would be able to get there by invitation only, that could be secured through radio talk shows and quiz programmes.
"So, it is going to be few days of pleasure on behalf of the government and people of Lagos to flag off the event that starts from tonight the 20th taking up to 31st December and into the New Year 1st of January 2013 and would be a year that would be more prosperous than all of the years that we have spent together", he said.
The Governor noted that progress is being made on the journey of the State as so many myths have been exploded about Lagos making it clear that the Bright and Rewarding Future that everyone sees is coming closer and within touching distance.
Also speaking, the representative of the Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Yussuf Ageni thanked the Lagos State Government for giving the organization the opportunity to have the platform which he described as a special privilege.
He noted that given the fact that the Nigerian Breweries has been around for so long and started in Lagos with its first brewery located in Lagos, anytime anyone talks about the success story of the Nigerian Breweries it is synonymous with the success story of Lagos.
He said when the team from the Lagos State Signage and Advertising Agency(LASAA) came up with the initiative, the question from the Nigerian Breweries was that where has the concept been all along as it fits into one of the core values of the Nigerian Breweries which is "enjoyment," with others being "respect" and "passion for quality."
He added that one of the things every nation, every individual celebrates is the end of the year because of the appreciation of the divine privilege of being alive, adding that the entire concept of the cross- over fits perfectly into one of the core objectives of the Nigerian Breweries.
He explained that the NB Plc deliberately refused to sign a five year deal because it believes the deal will be for eternity as Nigerian Breweries once it starts any project can only make it better, but will never start and stop.
Speaking earlier, the Managing Director of LASAA, Mr George Noah welcomed guests to the programme which is the flag off of the Festival of Lights for the Lagos Countdown event which comes up on the 31st of December 2012.
He said LASAA has worked with the Lagos State Electricity Board and with various agencies towards the success of the small reception and procession from Marina to Bar Beach where the event will take place.
Prominent among those who attended the flag off were the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu I, members of the State Executive Council including the Commissioners for Environment, Mr Tunji Bello, Tourism, Mr Disun Holloway, Agriculture and Co-operatives, Prince Gbolahan Lawal among others http://lagosindicatoronline.com/Fashola_Switches_On.htmlhttps://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/417997_527190413967415_954862920_n.jpghttps://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/417997_527190420634081_1772265396_n.jpghttps://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/383643_527191700633953_130209944_n.jpghttps://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/383643_527191703967286_856629508_n.jpghttps://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/417997_527190410634082_1339565244_n.jpghttps://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/417997_527190417300748_2095034766_n.jpg |

Frank-C: Please, don't refer me to NL as a credible news source. Kindly list the roads that have been completed that meet the conditions listed. List of new hospitals, pipe borne water, water ways, etc that were not existing and Fashola brought to life will do. Calling people clowns and ignorant for demanding accountability from government is just childish and petty.
Please, don't tell me about Lekki - Epe express way or Badagry road or even Eko Hotel round about xmass decorations by some banks. List roads, bridges and capital projects finished by Fashola's administration. Lets keep it civil, please. All the stuff you listed is in that link. Are you handicapped and unable to click on that link to get yourself educated? |
Politics › Re: The Truth About Fashola's Success by babapupa: 5:41pm On Dec 22, 2012 |
Frank-C: You are not really addressing the points raised. Fashola's record is being x-rayed here, not that of another leader. Since you appointed yourself his spokesman, do well to defend his record without sounding petty.
List the roads being constructed by Fashola administration, not some PPP project or those being executed by world bank or ECOWAS or such other bodies. Many people here know how much is being deducted from their monthly income in the name of tax and they deserve to know what exactly it is being used for.
Is the allegation that no new hospitals or new roads or pipe borne water extension has been executed by Lagos State government over the last 5 years true? Is it true that most projects being executed in lagos state are by private investors and multi-lateral partnerships? Lagos earns about N30b monthly in combined IGR and Federal allocation. Lagos also ranks highest in the list of state debtors in the country. What exactly are these monies being used for? In fact, Lagos is a microcosm of Nigeria and i want to know how much Fashola spend daily on food and what his monthly security vote is? Yes, i deserve to know because this is democracy and this information should be freely accessible to all that want it but it is not to me.
Any attempt to call me and others names instead of being a democrat that most of you Fashola propaganda machine have always preached will go further to expose the hollowness of your criticism. Answer the questions and leave GEJ out of it, after all you have 'convinced' us all that he is bad, so there is not need comparing the 'excellent, smart, articulate and clue-ful' fashola and the man most of you have summarized his profile as a 'retardeen' This is not an allegation, this is your own stupidity and ignorance. https://www.nairaland.com/695873/fashola-eko-o-ni-baje/1Go through that thread and cure your ignorance. You people are clowns and this is why we don't take you seriously... |

Yes but not by accepting that Oduduwa is a Bini prince and that all Yoruba descended from bini.
As for the Alaafin, that issue had been flogged several times on here. He should continue his fight of superiority with the Olubadan and Soun in Oyo state... and not try to distort historical facts. Dudu_Negro: nobody betrayed Abiola. Abiola took things too far out. the same people we accuse of betraying Abiola eere the ones that cautioned and pleaded with him about his alliances with sokoto. Abiola pressed on and believed he was untouchable. it was too late for any of them to save him, he had become too big and envied in the north. even koffi annan intervened and could not save.him. What Abiola did or didn't do is not the issue here, it's about standing up for Yoruba people, it's about unifying our voices for our collective interests and this is something this useless man wont do on behalf of his own people. Building a church on the palace grounds is just another one of his many anti Yoruba antics. He's simply not a worthy custodian of Yoruba culture and values. |

However, you must still respect the crown and the throne. I advise and plead with you to stop. I totally respect your concerns. I respect the crown, but not the clown the crown is sitting on. The useless man is anti Yoruba, he goes out of his way to sell us out and set us back. He has no respect and following in Yoruba land outside of his corrupt cronies.. 9jacrip: Please relax, his personality might come off as repulsive to you but the fact remains that his office is (at) the peak of Yoruba race which Alaafin of Oyo must get off his high horse to deal with. Of what use is Ooni to Yoruba people when at the end of the day, his office and activities serves only the enemies of Yoruba people? Erecting a church within or anywhere around his palace is an abomination, it's an insult to Yoruba culture and denigration of our rich historical heritage. This man is not a good custodial of Yoruba history and culture. Alaafin of Oyo is on the right side of our history and culture while the useless ooni is on the wrong and corrupt side of history. |
Politics › First Nigerian Newspaper, Iwe Irohin, Resuscitated 140 Years After It Died by babapupa(op): 3:36am On Dec 22, 2012 |
Iwe-Irohin Newspaper on the standhttps://premiumtimesng.com/dev/wp-content/files/2012/12/Iwe-Irohin-Newspaper-on-the-stand.jpgIwe Irohin, Nigeria’s first newspaper, was established by a missionary, Henry Townsend in 1859. The first Nigerian Newspaper, known as Iwe Irohin, was on Friday resuscitated after 140 years of its demise in Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital.
The re-launch took place at the Press Centre, with dignitaries in attendance expressing their joy over the resuscitation.
The 32-page tabloid, which is an initiative of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ogun State Council, was reviewed by Adegoke Raufu, the Head of the Department of Mass Communication at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta. The newspaper is printed on pure white bond of 60 gram thickness. Eight pages of the paper are presented in full-processed colours, while the remaining 24 pages are in black and white. The news pages run in six columns, while interviews and features pages are run in four columns.
The reviewer noted that Iwe Irohin is a good attempt and a commendable effort at re-living the past, adding that it shows the dedication of journalists in Ogun State to upholding the past for the purpose of consolidating the present.
“What is now required of all of us is uniting for the future of journalism practice in Nigeria. For now, we are endangered species,” Mr. Raufu said.
In this remark, Yemisi Fadairo, the Special Assistant on Information to Ibikunle Amosun, the Ogun State Governor, called for a regular media summit, which should focus on the need for professionals to be alive to the responsibilities of taking over ownership of media establishment.
“There is need for a summit to think of how professionals can come up to set up and sustain newspapers, because politicians have hijacked newspapers,” Mr. Fadairo said. “It is not only detrimental to the journalism profession, but also to the nation and democracy.”
Mr. Fadairo noted that only few newspapers in the country are owned by journalists, lamenting that just recently, Newswatch and National Mirror, owned by journalists, were sold to a businessman.
Iwe Irohin was founded on December 3, 1859, by a missionary, Henry Townsend. It was published bi-weekly, in Yoruba and English language and ran for about eight years, specifically from 1859 to 1867.
A single edition had eight pages in total and while the Yoruba edition was sold for 120 cowries, the English edition cost a penny.
Its pages were usually divided into two columns and had no pictures. |

I think they should be trained in Africa or Asia. In Europe, a visit to big stores would reveal that most of their food products(excluding dairies) are sourced from farms in Africa & Asia. Wetin dem wan go learn for Germany, how to drive tractors? as Germany does not have a cassava or yam field. It's a temperate region. What do you know about their accommodation arrangements? Do you know where they are staying, what do you know about the cost of the program, do you know anything beyond what's in this article or ere you the trip coordinator?
