Prof. Charles Esimone has emerged the new Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in Anambra State.

His emergence was sequel to the conclusion of interviews for the post of Vice-Chancellor in which he took the first position.

The university’s Director of Information & Public Relations/Chief Protocol Officer, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, disclosed this in a statement Tuesday night.

He also said Esimone was immediately handed his appointment letter as the sixth substantive Vice Chancellor of the university on Tuesday by the governing council of the institution.

According to Ojukwu, the Pro-Chancellor and the Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Azeez Oladotun, said Esimone’s emergence as the new Vice Chancellor was done through a rigorous and transparent selection process.

“No fewer than 10 professors indicated interest in the vice chancellorship seat of the prestigious university,” he said.

Esimone, a Deeper Life Pastor, emerged Vice Chancellor barely two months after he and his wife welcomed a quadruplet, two boys and two girls.

The couple had welcomed their first son in 2015, after 12 years of barrenness.

A pioneer dean of the faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of UNIZIK, Esimone was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) until his latest appointment.

Prof. Esimone was also the director of Confucius Institute of the University.

He is a Professor of Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical microbiology as well as a Fellow of the Academy of Science (FAS).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, #EFCC, Port Harcourt Zonal Office, on Monday, May 13, 2019 secured four different convictions at a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The convicts are: Wasiu Rasak, Chinedu Jude Abah, Rome Steven Itimi and Richard Uduma.

They were all convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment each by Justice M.I. Sani.

Rasak was arraigned on a one-count charge bordering on money laundering.

The charge reads: “That you, Wasiu Rasak, sometime in July 2018, at Port Harcourt within the Port Harcourt Judicial Division of the High Court, retained the sum of N1,350,00.00 (One Million Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) on behalf of Ola Oladipupo which is a proceed of a crime, knowing or suspecting him to be engaged in a criminal conduct, thereby committed an offence, contrary to section 17(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011 as amended and punishable under section 17(b) of the same Act.”

He pleaded “guilty” to the charge.

Both prosecuting counsel, Samuel Chime and defence counsel, Obinna Ofodile agreed on the convict's plea of “guilty”.

Rasak got into trouble when he posed as a lawyer to defraud a lady of the sum of N1,350,000. The lady was deceived by a fake lover, Moferere Temilola, who promised her marriage. They dated for two months. However, on a particular day, Rasak called her that her proposed husband was in prison over a case and that he needed a sum of N1.5 million to resolve the matter. The petitioner quickly raised N1.35 million and sent it to the supposed lawyer, Rasak to resolve the matter.

After a while, Rasak started making other financial demands from her on behalf of the proposed husband. This fuelled the petitioner's suspicion that she was being scammed and so petitioned the EFCC.

Justice Sani sentenced him to six months imprisonment without an option of fine.

Chinedu Jude Abah and Rome Steven Itimi were arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining under false pretence.

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, who is currently in Thailand with the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement agency (NDLEA), Col. The Economic Confidential on Sunday released its Annual States Viability Index (ASVI) report.

It showed that 17 States are insolvent as their Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) in 2018 were far below 10% of their receipts from the Federation Account Allocations (FAA) in the same year.

The index declared that without the monthly disbursement from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), many states remain unviable, and cannot survive without the federally collected revenue, mostly from the oil sector.


The IGR are generated by states through Pay-As-You-Earn Tax (PAYE), Direct Assessment, Road Taxes and revenues from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

The IGR of the 36 states of the federation totalled N1.1 trillion in 2018 as compared to N931 billion in 2018, an increase of N172 billion.

The report further indicates that the IGR of Lagos State of N382bn is higher than that of 30 States put together whose Internally Generated Revenues are extremely low, and poor compared to their allocations from the Federation Account.

Meanwhile, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, which is not a state but the nation’s capital generated N65bn IGR against N29bn it got from the Federation Account in 2018.

Lagos State remained steadfast in its number one position in IGR with a total revenue generation of N382bn compared to FAA of N260bn which translate to 146% in the twelve months of 2018.

It is followed by Ogun State which generated IGR of N84.55bn compared to FAA of N93bn representing 90%; Rivers with N112bn compared to FAA of N237bn representing 47% and Kwara State with a low receipt from the Federation Account has maintained its impressive IGR by generating N23bn compared to FAA of N81bn representing 28%.

Others with impressive IGR include Edo with IGR of N28bn compared to FAA of N112bn representing 25%; Kano generated N44bn compared to FAA of N183bn representing 24%; Enugu with IGR of N22bn compared to FAA of N92bn representing 23%; Ondo with IGR of N24bn compared to FAA of N108bn representing 22.77%; Kaduna with IGR of N29bn compared to FAA of N131bn representing 22.44% while Delta State earned N58bn IGR against FAA of N285bn representing 20%.

The report noted that ten states with impressive IGR generated N808bn in total, while the remaining states merely generated a total of N295bn in 2018.

While the report provides shocking discoveries, the states with less than 10% IGR have remained 17 as in the previous year 2017.

It added: “The poor states may not stay afloat outside the Federation Account Allocation due to socio-political crises including insurgency, kidnapping, armed-banditry and herdsmen-farmer clashes.

“Other states lack foresight in revenue generation drive coupled with arm-chair governance.

“The states that may not survive without the Federation Account due to poor internal revenue generation are Ebonyi which realized a meagre N6.14bn compared to a total of N76bn it received from the Federation Account Allocation (FAA) in 2018 representing about 7.98%; Bayelsa with IGR of N13.6bn compared to FAA of N192bn representing 7.10%; Taraba N5.96bnbn compared to FAA of N88bn representing 6.77%; Adamawa with IGR of N6.2bn compared to N97bn of FAA representing 6.77% and Borno with IGR of N6.52bn compared to N122bn of FAA representing 5.3% within the period under review.


“The major poor internal revenue earners are Katsina which generated N6.9bn compared to FAA of N138bn representing 5.03%; Yobe N4.48bn compared to FAA of N89bn representing 4.86% and lastly Kebbi N4.88bn IGR compared to FAA of N101bn representing 4.88%.”

The Economic Confidential ASVI further showed that only three states in the entire Northern region have IGR above 20% in comparison to their respective allocations from the Federation Account. They are Kwara, Kano and Kaduna States. Meanwhile seven states in the South recorded over 20% IGR in 2018. They are Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Edo, Enugu, Ondo and Delta States.

The four Southern states with the poorest Internally Generated Revenue of less than 10% compared to their FAA in 2018 are Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, Ebonyi and Bayelsa. Similarly, 13 Northern States have poorest IGR, namely Benue, Nasarawa, Gombe, Zamfara, Niger, Bauchi, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Borno, Katsina, Yobe and Kebbi States.

On May 4, 2019, tragedy struck at Aduragbemi Street, Alagbado area of Lagos State as a four-year-old boy was crushed to death by a car in his parents’ compound.  One Adenowo Adeyiga  said to be the driver of the Toyota Camry car, with the number plate, KTU 242 FC, was said to be returning home from Ijegun – on the outskirts of Lagos – when his car had a brake failure and lost control. The deceased identified as Segun Egunbambi who was playing at the scene of the incident, sustained leg injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in the neighbourhood for treatment. He died from the injuries some hours later.

The suspect who was arraigned before an Ikeja magistrates’ court on three counts bordering on reckless driving and manslaughter after his car crushed the four-year-old boy in his parents' compound, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him by the court registrar.While the case was adjourned till June 20, 2019, he was granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in the like sum.

Germany has found a way to curb the pollution caused by diesel trucks in their country.

These trucks have caused a lot of pollution to towns and cities. They are also fueling climate change all around the globe.

Germany has launched an electric highway for trucks which uses overhead lines to power big rigs.

This system that allows trucks to draw electric power from overhead cables went into operation on 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) of the autobahn on Tuesday, according to the German government.

It’s the first such test on a public road in Germany.

Developed by Siemens (SIEGY), the system allows big rigs with special equipment mounted on their roofs to connect to electrified lines while traveling at speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour (56 miles per hour).

The trucks run on electric motors when connected to the overhead lines, and a hybrid system when they return to a traditional road. Sensors detect when the overhead wires are available.

Siemens says its eHighway system combines the efficiency of electric rail with the flexibility of trucking. Another benefit is a sharp reduction in emissions of CO2 and nitrogen oxides.

Road benefits

Siemens argues that the system can be integrated with existing road infrastructure, making it a practical way to reduce emissions and energy consumption in places where railways aren’t feasible.

The section of road opened Tuesday is part of a crucial link between Frankfurt airport, a global freight hub, and a nearby industrial park. Two more stretches of highway with the system will open soon.

The German government spent €70 million ($77 million) to develop trucks that can use the system. Siemens said that a truck owner could save €20,000 ($22,370) on fuel over 100,000 kilometers (62,137 miles).

Environmental boost

Truck transportation is the world’s fastest growing source of oil demand, according to the International Transport Forum, which is part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

According to the group, road transportation of goods will also account for 15% of the projected increase in global CO2 emissions until 2050.

Slashing carbon emissions from transportation including freight is a key part of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, which aims limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Projects like the one in Germany could be part of a solution that includes increased railway and electric vehicle use.

“Electrified trucks are particularly efficient solution on the road to carbon-neutral transportation,” said Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, state secretary at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment.

Tests and demonstrations of the eHighway technology have also been conducted on a smaller scale in Sweden and near the US ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

A mild drama took place today at a morgue in Kenya, as four women fought over the body of a man they each claimed was their husband. The ladies who showed up to claim the body of the deceased, were identified as Janet Wambui, Lydia Wanjiru, Susan Wakuthii; the fourth's identity is yet to be established. The deceased identified as Peter Mwangi Gichobi is said to be a Taxi driver a.k.a boda boda rider, and he reportedly died in an accident which occurred at Nyangati-Embu road a month ago.

The four women who fought over the body of a man they each claimed was their husband at the Kirinyaga County Funeral Parlour, were separated by police officers from Kerugoya police post who intervened in the matter.

While the Morgue authorities revealed that the death certificate would be given to the deceased's next of kin who was his uncle, Kanyekiini MCA, Harrison Ngiria, promised the angry ladies that they would be included during the distribution of the wealth left by the man. It was further learnt that the 32-year-old man had a son with each of the women.
