Many pressure groups are agitating for a president of south east extraction come 2023. Don’t you think is premature?

We want power to move around the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. It is the turn of the south east to lead Nigeria. The truth of the matter is that our case is like a pregnancy. When it is due for the child to be born, the child should come out naturally. If there is anything abnormal that will make the child not to come out when it is due, the mother of the child will definitely be seen as abnormal. Nigeria as a country is abnormal today because of the level of injustices that has been meted out to the south eastern part of the country. 2023 is actually the only available opportunity for Nigeria to redeem her image as it affects the south eastern part of Nigeria. After the civil war, we said ‘no victor, no vanquished’. How has that been applied as it affects the south easterners? You will agree with me that the south easterners have not been reconciled to mainstream Nigerian political system. 2023 provides us opportunity to do that. If we miss it, then people who are holding extreme position about Nigeria will be justified. If we are denied our rightful position to preside over Nigeria in 2023, I am sorry to say that Nigeria may no longer exist. That’s about it. You can’t keep pushing people to the extreme and expect them not to react. Dr Nwodo just granted an interview about this same matter. He clearly stated that the elites of eastern part of Nigeria will have sympathy towards Nnamdi Kanu’s struggle if we are denied presidency. Nnamdi Kanu has continued to say that there is no place for us in Nigeria. But we keep telling him to give us a chance in Nigeria. 2023 is the deciding factor. Every southern will reconsider the relationship that brought us together as a country if we don’t take a shot at the presidency. Nigeria’s amalgamation happened without consultation with the Nigerian people. There is urgent need to reintegrate the south easterners into the mainstream political structure of Nigeria in 2023. If this is not done, Nigeria will come to an end. There are prominent south easterners who are being singled out to preside over this nation. We have Peter Obi on our minds because everybody knows that we require a prudent leadership to save Nigeria. Without prudent management of the resources of Nigeria, we are in a mess as a country. Nigeria needs Peter Obi right now because Buhari’s government has battered Nigeria. There is no direction. The economy is comatose. The nepotism style of governance has divided the country. The government agencies are fighting each other. We need Peter Obi who has the experience and knows what to do on arrival. Power must shift to the eastern part of Nigeria and Peter Obi is equal to the task in 2023.

Governor El Rufai has added his voice to this agitation. Do you think he is being sincere or just playing to the gallery?

El Rufai wants power to shift to the south but he did not narrow it down to the south east. He is just re-echoing what they have in their constitution in APC. For them, power should rotate between north and south. We have gone beyond that north and south approach to governance. We have six geopolitical zones in Nigeria. It was discussed during the 1995 Abacha constitutional conference. El Rufai should first of all realize that Nigeria has come of age. Those who were born in 1999 during the birth of this democracy are now adults. The information we have is that El Rufai is part of the northern voices that has continued to fan the embers of division, conflicts and violence. Look at the level of violence in his state. Look at southern Kaduna. I expect El Rufai to be specific and make it clear that power must shift to south eastern Nigeria. He should call a spade, a spade and declare that an Igbo must become president. If an Igbo man says it, it is misunderstood. There is this palpable fear when an igbo man is mentioned. He should stop playing selfish politics. If you look at it clearly, he is positioning himself to become vice president. The rumour is rife that he will be running on a joint ticket with Rotimi Amaechi. El Rufai should be truthful to himself and put Nigeria’s interest first.

Bola Tinubu is also rumoured to be nursing presidential ambition?

All Nigerians are constitutionally qualified to contest for presidency. It is the right of every Nigerian to aspire for leadership but Nigeria is a peculiar nation. We must be deliberate about how we play politics. If the likes of Bola Tinubu who everyone agrees succeeded in building a political structure in south west with which he often negotiates with powers that be, for the interest of Nigeria he should shelve his selfish ambition. The south west has had eight years of presidency. The south west is about to finish eight years of vice presidency. What does Tinubu want? What is this greed for power? Lagos is already in his pocket. Beyond the zoning formula, Tinubu is not a character that I will personally want to have as a president of Nigeria. Tinubu is a greedy man and a kleptomaniac. I sincerely think that his ambition exposes his greed for power and wealth which he already has. Tinubu is a tribalist and will be worse than Buhari as a president. By now, Tinubu is supposed to start shopping for an Igbo president in APC where he is the national leader. Ogbonnaya Onu is a member of APC. Will you say he is not qualified to lead this country? We have enough Igbos in APC that can lead Nigeria. Tinubu should not allow ambition to becloud him from good reasoning. He should learn from MKO Abiola’s experience.

How would you react to the crisis in Edo State?

Tinubu is the national leader of APC. Of course, he is directly involved in what is happening in Edo state. It is all about 2023. How can you disqualify a sitting governor that has served for four years based on allegations of certificate forgery? They just want to grab Edo state by all means. Edo is very important to them but unfortunately Edo State is not Lagos. My only advice to Edo people is that Nigerians are with them. Let the elections not be violent. Choose your leaders by yourselves not by godfathers. Godfatherism was abolished by Adams Oshiomole, Godwin Obaseki is continuing in the vision to kill godfatherism. It does not matter whether the godfather is Adams Oshiomole or Bola Tinubu. Godfatherism should be totally eradicated in Nigeria because it has not paid us. The violence we experience during elections in Nigeria is caused by godfathers. That is the truth.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to verbal attacks he received from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Friday, for endorsing Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the forthcoming election in Edo.

Buhari wondered why the PDP, which, according to him, has been “struggling to clear its name from alleged deals with the underworld in Dubai and the United States” has found the voice to attack the anti-corruption war of his administration.

In a statement sent to DAILY POST on Saturday signed by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Buhari noted that his endorsement of Pastor Ize-Iyamu, who he described as a dashing candidate for the governorship election has angered the opposition party.

According to the President, the PDP has easily forgotten its own history and antecedents and has decided to point at the faults of others, ranting against the present administration’s war against corruption and alleging its failure.

According to Buhar, “Let PDP first withdraw the governorship nominations it gave to Ahmadu Fintiri and Bala Mohammed of Adamawa and Bauchi States respectively, before it opens its mouth and talk on the efforts of this administration in fighting corruption. Or else, it should shut its mouth forever and leave us to do what it dares not attempt.

“Both PDP governors were actually on bail from criminal trial on several counts of fraud and embezzlement.”

Speaking on the case of Bala Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi State, the Presidency recalled that the anti-graft agency was arraigned on a six-count charge bordering on abuse of office, false declaration of assets and fraud to the tune of N864 million.

According to Shehu, “Justice A. R. Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, July 1, 2016 granted bail to the former acting governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri. He was charged on June 30, 2016 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, alongside his company, Mayim Construction and Properties Limited on a five-count charge of money laundering to the tune of N2.9 billion.

Among other claims, the Presidency noted Bala, while in office as minister allegedly received N550 million as bribe from Aso Savings and Loans Limited with respect to some properties in the Asokoro area of Abuja.

The Presidency noted that Ize-Iyamu was not the only one listed in that specific corruption allegation and being prosecuted by the EFCC, adding that he is being tried alongside former Deputy Governor, Lucky Imasuen, PDP Chairman in the State, Chief Dan Orbih, and other leaders of the party in the state, Tony Aziegbemi and Efe Erimuoghae, insisting that only the courts can convict.

The Presidency argued that Ize-Iyamu remains a suspect until conviction, advising the PDP to show examples by “withdrawing the nomination of their governors and the party’s numerous Senators and other legislators standing trial in various courts of the country.

The Presidency insisted that the PDP destroyed the country’s economy for sixteen years and so has no moral authority to criticize the current administration.

According to the Presidency, the Buhari sees corruption in the past governments and in its own administration and is fighting it with equal gusto.

It said for this singular reason the PDP cannot be placed on the same scale with the Buhari government who, having had corruption as a way of life and Nigerians should learn to live with it.

“This clean-up drive by the President Buhari administration will only speed up with the ongoing investigations and trials.

“The current administration’s cleansing exercise of the government, politics and economy in line with the zero tolerance for corruption, will not be distracted.

DAILY POST reported Friday that President Buhari endorsed Ize-Iyamu as the party’s flag bearer for next month’s elections in Edo State.

This was revealed by the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of the APC, Mai Malla Buni, on Friday.

Buni stated this while briefing State House correspondents after presenting Ize-Iyamu to Buhari.

However, the Edo State chapter of the PDP, faulted the meeting between President Buhari and Ize-Iyamu.

The party said Ize-Iyamu needed Buhari’s endorsement to shore up his battered image and the opinion of Edo people, ahead of the election. recalling that the APC candidate was facing a N700m fraud in court.

Our attention has been drawn to the meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Edo State gubernatorial election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu.


This meeting is ill-advised and a dent on the image of President Buhari, whose administration is known for the spirited fight against the hydra-headed monster called corruption, which has encumbered the development of our dear country for decades.


Unknown to President Buhari and his advisers, the APC gubernatorial candidate is desperately in need of an endorsement from someone like the President, to shore up his battered image in Edo State and the larger court of public opinion that have followed Ize-Iyamu’s trial very closely.


Ize-Iyamu is currently being tried for money laundering to the tune of N700 million. The matter is before Honourable Justice J. M. Umar at the Federal High Court in Benin City, Edo State, with suit No. FHC/BE21C/ 2016.


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed the case preferring eight count charges against him and four other accused persons bordering on alleged illegal receipt of public funds to the tune of N700 million for the purpose of the 2015 general elections, contrary to the provisions of the EFCC Act and the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act. His next court date is October 15th.


It is our considered view that associating with a man with this corruption baggage (alleged) compromises the integrity of the President’s fight against corruption and sends mixed signals to Nigerians, home and abroad as well as other nationals who have invested enormous faith in the President’s fight against corruption. The Nigeria we envisage under Buhari’s watch is one in which people like Ize-Iyamu, will be told in clear terms, to go and clear their names, before being seen with, or around the occupier of the exalted office of the president.


This dangerous precedent, if set, will embolden other Nigerians with similar or worse charges to hobnob and organise hang-out sessions with the president in the days and weeks to come.

To impeach governor of Edo State, they will need the Chief Judge of Edo state to set up a 7 member (Non Partisan and above board) panel at the request of the speaker of the house of assembly.


All these are hurdles but the Oshiomole forces (not Iyamu, because it is Oshiomole that is contesting against Obaseki) will spare nothing to achieve it if they want
