topsy23:

Pressure pump should been the option for good water pressure on first floor.
Pressure pump can only work when there is power supply but with present situation of nigeria power supply hmmmm........

Your overhead tank is not high enough. You said 6m above the ground. The same level with the height of the house.

Last comment; what is type of pipe did you use during installation? It will be another story when you install pressure pump and the whole toilet started leaking.

Just regular PVC pipes.

@Kola, you're right. It's 1 inch.

The height of the tank would not make a difference in this case since the plumber still dropped the feeder pipe to the bottom before distributing.

I still need ideas from people who don't have this issue in their builds- how did you resolve it?
Properties / Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by battleaxe: 2:30pm On Jul 24, 2016
As @freeworld mentioned, "renting" off a building carpenter who will do the woodwork for the decking will be the cheapest option I.e. Don't buy used wood. I find that most of these wood actually get destroyed because of the carelessness with which they're removing after the curing duration.

You'll be surprised at how neat the wood turns out when it's theirs.

To point out though, these wood can sometimes be warped and as such, may lead to some bulges in some portions of your deck. If done well, this should be very minimal and will be covered up by your ceiling anyway, unless you intend having a bare rendered ceiling.

Oga Kola,
While I don't need to wait for Nepa to pump, I no get Mikano yet.

I also don't want to have to put a generator on in the mornings to power a boaster pump before I can take a bath.

Something with a little power consumption maybe that can be supported on an inverter.

Biko, help o!

Thanks.

Water source is from a borehole, pumped as required to a 1500l tank.

Tank is about 6m above ground.

Water supply from tank is via a 4 inch pipe I think. This runs down from the tank from where is is distributed around.

Pls note that most of the pipes are not on the surface so looking for the easiest solution.

Thanks in advance.

@House

Please, what is the easiest way to increase water pressure on the 1st floor of a duplex?

While the water comes out well downstairs, the water mostly comes in trickles upstairs - you have to "collect" water before taking a bath defeating the purpose of having a shower head.

While I have read about power showers and all; I'm reading various conflicting reviews.

Can you gurus please help?

Thanks.

Politics / Re: Christopher Glee's Comment About African Nations Causes Uproar Online by battleaxe: 10:00am On Jul 11, 2016
Actually......

47 billion Naira cannot feed the whole nation for one day.

Assuming people do live below a dollar a day as mentioned severally in this thread, and spend 100 Naira per meal a day. This results in a daily spend of 300 Naira.

For a nation of 170 million at last formal count, that equals 51 billion Naira.

As all of us may know, a lot of people will spend much more than that based on availability, age or a myriad of other factors.

And some people sadly, maybe less than that.

Not taking away from the points made though.

So maybe a tiny weeny African nation....... Or portions of one assuming all in there are indeed "poverty stricken".
Properties / Re: DIY Thread - Homeowners And Supliers by battleaxe: 1:53pm On Jun 18, 2016
Back to the dedicated "fuses" per socket outlet as you stated originally.

Actually, non of the international Electrical standards in any country require dedicated "fuses" per outlet.

What you will see in larger, typically industrial facilities is the presence of ELCBs for socket outlets which typically can be used for portable equipment. Still, you will hardly find one per socket, unless maybe for temporary power.

Alternatively, you can put an ELCB upstream. Serve same purpose but will cause a wider outage if it trips.

Just FYI, Several Nigerian houses have these ELCBs installed.

@gurus in the house
Can you please advice on the problem a is facing below?

Compound which is designed sloping backwards (i.e. the back is filled less than the front), hence during rainfalls, the water collects at the back of the compound. There are mini collector pits around the back which take the surface water and channel it outside through a large 12 inch pipe. However, during really heavy rains, this solution is not sufficient as everywhere is wet.

Has anyone experienced this? What is the best way of dealing with this water? The land is the muddy type.

Will a temporary surface holding tank work to temporarily hold the water during heavy rainfalls?

Please advice o!

Science/Technology / Re: How To Create A Locally Made Inverter With Ease by battleaxe: 8:02am On May 11, 2016
Someone has asked me this question and I thought I'd bring it to all the gurus in the house.

If money was not a constraint and someone wanted to get at a minimum a 5kVA solar setup which would last as long as the widely proclaimed 25 years, what make/brand and setup of equipment(Solar panels, inverter, batteries, charger etc) would you advice him to get and from where?

The market is so flooded nowadays with different products and with only word of mouth reviews from users, its difficult to know which is good.

Our gurus - over to you please.

Was the 172k average earning monthly or weekly? With a suggested income of 120k for your drivers in another post, would that practically not erode all possible profit for the partner if this is the monthly earning?

I'm actually embarrassed and ashamed by some of the comments on this thread.

Therein lies why we are where we are as a nation!

A nation whose youth have lost their moral compass will bear exactly the same fruits as the current leaders they complain about incessantly. A real pity.

What other costs do you bear on purchase of FGN bonds apart from the total consideration? Do your banks or investment houses charge you custody or transaction fees similar to Treasury bill purchase?

Properties / Re: PICTURE. FLOOR STAMPING(goodbye to weed),A better alternative to interlock stone by battleaxe: 5:26pm On Aug 05, 2015
So you are charging 1,000 per sqm just for labour?

I know I will need sand as well to bed the interlocking stones but providing sand, granite/gravel and cement as well as 1,000/sqm labour is outrageous. It would work out to be more expensive than Interlocking.

Also,you haven't mentioned that the patterns or impressions you stamp on the concrete usually wear away with time. Colors usually fade away as well, at least for the ones I've seen.

I also don't agree with your choice of using gravel over granite. This might be the only reason why your costs may be at par. Granite is cleaner and I believe binds better. You may even have to use a greater amount of cement in your mixing ratio to achieve some semblance of a cement:sand:granite mix.

@jjman
What is the problem with this scenario you posted in your last response?

besides bdc also now have a limit of 5000 and they need bvn before they can transact. the whole thing is a mess

If I run a BDC and I have DOM accounts in most major banks, I can do an intrabank dollar transfer to my customers dollar dom account while he transfers naira to me. I am assuming most honest nigerians should have a BVN now, so should not be a problem. $5k seems like a significant daily limit for an individual and I imagine companies would have a larger limit. They may need to do transactions over a few days to get enough but doable.

What am I missing? It seems there are solutions to the problem already?
Business / Re: It’s N209 To $1 As Appetite For Dollars Falls by battleaxe: 9:43am On Aug 04, 2015
@jjman, others
Can someone please confirm to me if interbank DOM account transfers are possible right now? Can i transfer dollar from my Zenith bank dollar account to @jjman's Diamond bank dollar account?

That is, can a BDC or aboki transfer dollars from his DOM account to mine, while I transfer naira back to his?

I guess the next problem though would be how the BDCs/aboki continue to have sufficient dollar inflows into their DOM accounts to maintain interbank transfers.
Business / Re: It’s N209 To $1 As Appetite For Dollars Falls by battleaxe: 9:21am On Aug 04, 2015
Based on the explainations made here, if not handled carefully, this might actually create another "black market" with possibly higher rates.

One where people in the diaspora with assess to foreign currencies are able to offer to transfer dollars on behalf of individuals, companies etc. for naira credit into their bank accounts back home in Nigeria.

As can be expected, rates would not be going for the official rates as the demand and supply curve would lead to greater demand than available supply, especially for businessmen who need parts or materials urgently, or even people with urgent medical needs outside the country. The end result would be rates possibly even higher than that being contended by the CBN.

Unfortuantely, as mentioned by jjman earlier, I believe this would lead to increased cost of doing business and eventual increased cost of commodities.

Is this a correct assumption?
