I lost interest in furthering ahead in football when I went for a screening. The coach was suprised when he saw me play well in the defensive midfield role and as a central defender. I was aked to stay aside.

To cut the story short, someone else got my place because he brought a signed letter from a senator.

I see. All the best with your academics. The mistake that some great players like you who didn't proceed with football made is that they didn't get an education or learn a trade. I see many of them, broses in their 40's, and marvel. Thank God you got an education. Hopefully, you can transfer that zeal to your kids as I am definitely going to do.

For now, before I get my own boys by God's grace, I am looking for a talent under 20 that I can invest in.

Yesterday makes it exactly 4 years that I graduated from UNIBEN with a BSc, second class upper. By God's grace, I finished with a 4-pointer CGPA and I left school with great delight and hope for the future.
In the last four years, a lot of things have happened. Yesterday was also the end of the service year for many erstwhile corpers, so I took the pain to write this down and share my story, hoping that everyone, especially those seeking for job opportunities will learn a thing or two.
As a young graduate in 2012 and 13, there were many challenges I faced and Some of them were even more serious sometimes because of my Christian faith
I graduated at the age of 26 and when i write application for jobs, some employers ask for long years of experience and age restrictions. Notable among these is the KPMG which I applied for but they didn't accept application from those over the age of 25. I was tempted severely and severally to swear affidavit in a court of law so I could adjust my age and be able to get these jobs.
A friend who was 27 when we applied did the same and got called for interview within months, when he told me about it that evening, it was just God that held me back from calling his runs guy to help me arrange mine.
I remember one of those days during NYSC when a sudden fear came upon me and I became sad within just because of the realisaytion that some good and reputable companies place age restrictions on their recruitment processes.
I prayed and wept that day and also made a vow never to lie about my age for any reason.
Fastforward to after NYSC- February 2014
I submitted applications in numerous places and in some instances invited for interviews. In a particular case, I lost the opportunity because I couldn't drive.
Two weeks after that one, there was a particular job opportunity I missed that brought tears to my eyes and pained my family members also.
It was a teaching job in one of those first-class sixth form Colleges in Lekki, Lagos.
Though they asked for experience, because of my passion for academics and also because the job was more or less a lecturing job considering the role, I decided to try my luck. The very idea of teaching excited me so much.
I applied and fortunately I was shortlisted for an interview.
Getting to the venue, I found out it was a very corporate school, they even had white students. The school had connection with some universities abroad.
The interview included some international exams including Cambridge exams for me. The exam was very hard and some questions were strange but I just tried my best.
After the written test, I was orally interviewed.
I told them the amount expected as salary, issue bothering around experience and so on.
About a week later, I got a message that I passed the first stage of the interview and I was invited for a final selection chat in Eko hotel and suites in Lagos.
Before that day, I had only seen Eko hotel on pages on newspapers and on the TV.
I didn't even know what to wear. I had no suit nor jacket. The shoe I wore for the interview was my grandad's.
On getting to the venue of the interview with my well-ironed shirt, tie and trousers, it turned out I was the only person not wearing suit,
We were shown to the office of a white man and soon, we started.
I need to state here that the institution hired a consultant to handle this recruitment for them, not all these agents.
When it got to my turn, I was right before the main man from the school and the consultant. The issue of experience came up again, but the consultant excused me and said I had no problem since I was personally recommended by the man teaching the subject because of the way I answered the question when he interviewed me in the written test.
The main man said since everyone one was okay with me. I was offered a congratulatory handshake and that was it. Even though I'd told them I would accept anything higher than 60k, they told me they would do better than that.
I was told I would be invited for a class practice just for formality since it was already concluded I've got for the job.
I left the place full of joy. I was so very glad. I couldn't wait to get home and inform my people. I even called them on my way home and they rejoiced with me.
Everyone was happy.
It was less than 2 months after NYSC- April 2014.
I started expecting to hear from these people but I didn't hear anything.
I was just sitting at home, expecting to resume my wonderful job. I even stopped applying for other jobs.
After about two weeks or thereabout, I decided to go to the school and find out the state of things.
I received a very sad news.
I was told the people they employed had resumed two weeks before that day.
I was also informed that nobody was employed for the subject I applied to teach. They said the person occupying the position who planned to leave the country changed his mind.
I stood there looking at the man like a ghost. I was devastated.
That was how the dream of working in such a nice environment was cut short.
When I got home and told my people, eyes were red but they tried their best to comfort me.
I had to settle for a teaching job of 25k per month I got through an advert on Guardian newspaper.
One thing about this particular teaching job was that I was told from onset that they assist their students during external exams. I also made it clear I would never be involved but would teach the students very well
For one reason or the other I was employed.
At a time in this school, I was the only teacher not assisting during external exams. I was overloaded with work. Sometimes I had no free period throughout the day. And the proprietress was not helping matters. She could humiliate anybody.
I felt like I was in a prison. To attend interview elsewhere na big wahala if she found out.
A time came I attended an interview with an insurance company. I was later invited for a four or three days training which did not connote automatic employment.
This school will never give me such time. NEVER.
I had only one option, take the risk and resign or forfeit this new opportunity.
I sought counsel from my Pastor who advised me and asked me to pray and take a final decision.
Eventually, I resigned.
My resignation led to war with the proprietress. She cursed and humiliated me that day when I asked for the previous month salary because it was a new month. I was so humiliated that I wept that day.
She rained abuses on me but I didn't reply her, not one word.
All I kept saying was 'I reject it in Jesus name'.
That was how I forfeited a full month salary and lesson fee for both Neco and WAEC for SSCE and also for junior WAEC.
I attended the training in the Insurance company only to find out that the job was a form of ADVANCED SLAVERY worse than the previous teaching job which I left behind.
So I was jobless once again.
This was May 2015 and I was staying with my Grandparents all this time.
I started struggling to get something doing
I attended some sham job interviews that the offer was nothing to write home about at all.
I was very desperate to get a job, but I couldn't put up with what was coming my way- they were not just worth it at all. Many employers are out to take advantage of the teeming unemployed youth in this country and I was not ready to be a slave.
One day, I stumbled on a post for employment on nairaland for the post of a Personal Assistant, PA.
I called the number and was asked to come for interview the following day.
I was selected for the job among the people that came for the interview.
It was a 50k starting job but I opted for it all the same.
That was how I was employed as PA to the Managing Director.
The first time I met the MD, he wasn't sure I was the type he really wanted. I guess it was due to the way I dressed.
He gave me few assignments which I did very well.
Before long, he complained about my dressing. He said I was not dressing up to his standard.
But he didn't just complain about it.
Some days later, he called me and took me to shoprite building.
He was just picking the clothes himself while I watch. Both shirts and trousers, all for me, without me paying a dime.
The one that surprised me was a belt he bought for me for 7k, till today, the belt is still as new.
The following day, he added sets of shoes from his personal closet. One of the shoes was even brand new. He did all these without deducting a penny from my salary.
The change around me was obvious to people, even in church. I tried my best to work very hard and my salary was reviewed upward in less than 6 months.
I didnt even know how to thank God for everything.
Despite the recession, this year in particular has been so wonderful in our company.
We went outside the state for a job together, and he left me behind to complete the assignments in those places.
When I returned, I was promoted from PA to Operation officer.
God has really been so faithful to me.
In spite of my age and lack of experiences, I have been promoted yet again in just over a year in the company. I am currently the company's Head of Operations.
I currently earn a six figure income to God's glory.
Apart from the money, I have learnt a lot on this job, my level of exposure on the job has been superb.
I, who was rotting away last year in a secondary school now fly in aeroplane here and there as If I am boarding bus.
My Lord!
I really bless God, because no matter the situation, he cannot forget his own.
I am not alone in this.
I also have other brethren who God has placed in good places today.
Some are running Masters abroad, some already lecturing, some on wonderful teaching jobs and other good places. I even jam one of my University fellowship brothers on a flight to Abuja the other day. He works in a very good company too.
I want you to share this anonymously.
I want to encourage the new graduates just released from NYSC that God will take care of them if they trust him.
The old graduates who are also still looking for better opportunities will surely be remembered. Let them continue to trust in God.
God owes no man.
It is not the time to start compromising by reducing age or lieing about experience. I lost many opportunities because of my age, but I bless God for today and what he still has in store.
It is time to trust God fully without hanky panky. THERE SHALL BE SHOWERS OF BLESSINGS, IF WE LET GOD HAVE HIS WAY.
The experience was not that easy. There were times I made my mistakes in the course of the struggles. One has to settle things with God quickly and move on, learning to trust him more.
My conclusion is just that anytime we allow God to have his way. Things works fine though it may not be easy. The grace of God is what keeps us all going. There is no superman anywhere.
We are all what we are by the grace of God.

NYSC (National Youth Service Corp) as we all know is a platform where graduates from different tertiary institution, come together for a year in various state to serve their father’s land. To some it is an interesting phenomenon while to others it’s like hell in a packaged form.

This article is not based on NYSC but on what happens after NYSC.

Some has finished their service year, while others will soon be through and then move on to the next phase of life. This means no more alert from Federal Pocket, PPA (Place of Primary Assignment) or the State Government, like it or not, this is a pure fact. But those that are extremely very lucky or those that are vigilant of the present economic trend in Nigeria will strive to success.

Those that will earnestly search for knowledge and opportunities will also succeed, those that know the dig dong search strategies will eventually find opportunities, those that are ambitious will find a lucrative business to do and those that are lazy will stay at home to realize when they are old . So which category will you belong to after your service year? Many Nigerian graduates still sit back at home or some even tend to join the labour market movement filled with millions of graduates who are also looking for the so called “White collar Job” which in turn is tantamount to unemployment among Nigerian youths.

Recently, out of the 13,000 applications received by Dangote group of companies for graduates executive truck drivers, there were 6 PhD. holders, 704 MSC and over 8,460 BSc holders, even though the company only needed 100 drivers, almost 13,000 were received mostly from graduates of reputable universities. More so, according to the federal ministry of labor and productivity, it was stated that the mandatory NYSC, more than 41% of Nigerian graduates are without employment. The Bureau for Statistics added that over 50% of youths in Nigeria are jobless, while the world bank puts the figure at 56% considering the country’s estimated population of about 167 million and 60 million jobless , these figures are alarming and poses a great threat to the economic growth and development of a Nation with the highest concentration of black people on earth.

To avoid being on the negative side of Nigeria situation after service year, there are some things you need to keep your self doing, which brings about the question, What next after service year?

1. DEVELOP YOURSELF

For the first few months after service, most will remain very idle and will have nothing doing. These first few months can be used in personal development of one’s self. Mentally, Physically, and in all ramification. Pick a skill and learn more about it, Pick up the books you have been procrastinating to read and read up. There are various books out there that can be used to develop yourself. From inspirational to spiritual to business and lots more. If already you have what you good at, you can as well develop on it.


2. LEARN A TRADE

Sounds awkward to the ears of someone that just finished service, right? As for me, it doesn’t. Learning a trade after NYSC does not deprive you of your integrity or speaks less of you. If you check the background of some of the top rice people in your locality or Nigeria at large, you will find out that they were into trade before they started making millions out of it. Learning a trade is not something to look down on, but an avenue to increase financially. It may be tiring and discouraging for some while after you start, but like the saying “Good things don’t come easily”, so while learning a trade also learn to also have an enduring spiritual.


3. CREATE A GOOD BUSINESS PLAN AND EXECUTE

Start up that dream business you have been nursing for long. Ben (surname withheld) did his service at NNPC towers Abuja, a very good place if you must ask me, a lot of connections and opportunities. Every month he got his “alawee” as popularly called amongst corp members, he bought clothes and shoes bags and fancy wrist watches just because he believed he needed to impress the other workers. Wrong motive I say because today he’s going through fasting and prayer just to get a job. While Daniel (Surname Withheld ) did his at a certain Ondo company, not well known and he even had issues with some months payments, but he saved up half of his allowance monthly and now he has his own functioning business. The difference between Ben and Daniel is that Daniel had a good plan laid down and a way of saving up to finance that plan from the general #19,800 all corp members receive monthly which he used to execute his plan.


4. FURTHER YOUR EDUCATION

To those of you who are the career driven types, you can decide to further your education by getting MSC (Masters) in the field of your choice. Search through accredited institutions before applying for your master’s program. Some will say no money to fund them. Common! there are lots of scholarship programs out there, if not full then half, you can just Google search through, apply and you might be lucky. It is okay to do your master’s degree program, but get this straight, if your sole purpose for doing masters is to get a high paying job, then you are heading for a shocker ‘cos guess what’? there are so many people with masters who are yet to get a job, talk less of good ones. So get certified in what you love and compliment it with something.


5. GET MARRIED

As funny as this may sound, it is so true and advisable for the female gender most especially. Getting married after your service year will save you from alot of stress and troubles, mostly financially and it will be a relieve to your father, as the responsibility of spending on you has been shifted to another man. Getting married after service year is a good thing and a way of serving time, instead of being idle or flirting around thereby wasting your precious time on people that don’t worth it.

CONCLUSION

Just before you finish your service year, ask yourself these questions:-
* What are my passionate about?
* What are my opportunities like?
* What skill do I possess.

When you answer these question correctly, then you have won 50% of the race.

Well my case was an exceptional case , my mum actually love my wife , infact i was away for sometime and my wife was staying with her in the same house infact they were so close to the extend that my wife is my mum banker, she drop her ATM card for my wife and its my wife that control wht happen with the bank account for her, maywhile i must aplude my wife at the other hand she is also a good wife sincerely i thank God for my home and my family.

Respect to Mr. Ajayi whose intense enthusiasm for agri science quickened my interest in the subject. Unfortunately, I disappointed by getting a credit and pass grades in the final exams

Respect to Mr. Michael whose calmness and dedication in teaching bilogy and who shamed some of us who were stubborn and won't listen, not by beating us but by still treating us with respect. In a way, I disappointed him scoring a last C and B in the final exams. I will find that man soon and see the very little way I can try to repay.

Respect to Mrs Chukwu who loved me and believed so much in me. Unfortunately again, I did my best but could not live up to her high expectations in English language...A C in english language might be okay, but her belief in me can only be matched by an A1 or 2, manage 3.

Respect to Mr Okpala who, though sometimes impatient, developed in me some confidence which gave me the mind and desire to excel in secondary school maths and beyond. Thankfully, I didn't disappoint him in any way

Respect to my extremely enthusiastic economics teach Mr Alfred whose love for the subject was so poisonous that you must be a fool or dead to not for once love the subject. A very enthusiastic teacher, one who will push you and instill faith in you with his belief and life experiences...I'm happy

Respect to many others - Mrs Okolo, Mrs Tilige, Mrs Usalo and of course my primary school teachers such as Mrs Adegoke and so many others that I can't remember...

Respect to my first and only lesson teacher and now friend and senior colleague Mr Obinna who taught me as a lesson student, who I later grew up to teach alongside him and who provided me many platforms to excel in teaching.

Respect to my university professors, those who wrote me strong reference letters, those who gave me constructive criticisms for growth and those from whom I have learned a lot.

I know fit mention all..I know with this, some would have guessed the schools, and some would have even guessed my identity and they would be correct. E no matter. Na our great teachers wey dey celebrate.

One advice I would give is that teachers must not stop believing in their students, even if the students are underperforming. Some teachers know this wisdom. For others who don't know, try to control your anger!! Stop statements like you won't amount to anything, you can't enter that school, you won't go far, you can't be as good as Sogorobodo. Believe in the students, tell them they have the skills to go far but would have to work smart, hard and deliberately.

I graduated from that same department like 5 years ago and we heard a lot of unpalatable stories about this same man, we learnt then that he travelled abroad for his doctorate. Infact we really thanked our stars we didn't encounter him during our 4 years program. He co-authored some books on algebra with professor Ajala, such as elementary linear algebra, introduction to ring theory etc.

We really enjoyed Prof Ajala so much taking this same course he is taking, Baba is mature and welcoming God bless my Prof of life. He shaped my orientation about dressing in native attire with my fila(cap), oh that man is ever neat and sociable infact he inspired me to buying Mercedes Benz as my first car.

Av not been be to my alma mater close to 4years now after convocation, God bless my lecturers.

Back to the topic, bring the attention of the HOD to this, he will be talked to by the likes of Prof Okafor, Prof Ajala, Prof Okunuga and Prof Olaleru(although he too is a bit sadistic but he his of age now I guess). This is ICT age and nobody should be allowed to drag a successful system backward. Afterwards the likes of Dr Akewe had taken that same course before his arrival if I'm correct, so wats his stress!!! Abeg he should be tamed joor! The Unilag he left like 10years ago is not the same, he should be adviced properly or else social media will just cheaply scandalized him.

My regards to Dr Gbademu, Dr Fenuga, Dr Osilagun, Dr Bridget,Dr Akarawak etc also to Prof Kenku if he is still in the system.

Indeed, baba Ajala na neat prof, always in his native attire. Baba Kenku has long retired. Cool prof. All these babas went to the very best schools abroad in their days. They were smart. Olaleru is not sadistic but will make sure a student that somehow cheats pays for it. However, if person be average or above and prepare well for his course, na at least B. He is straightforward in my view. Okunuga briliiant professor, Okafor lively in class, sometimes wears his harvard ring

The other Drs you mentioned, I have not had the privilege of coming across them.
