dont8:It is well known that most of the recent illegal immigrants in Canada are Nigerians. See this link https://globalnews.ca/news/4177786/migrants-nigeria-us-travel-visas/ Do you think that by dodging the obvious you are doing Nigeria any favors? |
Hmmm. The legalization of marijuana is going to set Albertan taxpayers back CAD$90million over the next 2 years. https://edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/finance-minister-reacts-to-city-anger-over-cannabis-funding Trust government inefficiency to ruin what should have been a lucrative venture. |
XX01:I don't think Guelph falls under the GTA at all. If anything it is more associated with the Waterloo Region than any other but it is the seat of Wellington County albeit a separate entity. With a population of about 130 thousand people it is by Canadian standards a reasonably sized city. Even though Guelph is not dependent on any single industry, manufacturing jobs seem to dominate the city and in comparison with many other cities the unemployment rate is low. You will also find that because of its proximity to the Waterloo region (the tri-cities Cambridge,Kitchener and Waterloo) you see many people who live in Guelph but work in Waterloo or vice versa. While I think Guelph is one of the nicer cities to live in the region I will advise that new comers in the area set their eyes on K-W proper as Waterloo is fast becoming an attractive hub for Insurance, IT and manufacturing type companies. (Just my views though). Overall, Guelph is a nice city with a touristy feel to it, not overly far from Toronto or the GTA but far enough to retain a slower and calmer pace of life. |
Babyvet:You can say that again. There are too many jokers here. I'm going to comfortably bet that less than a tenth of all those huffing and puffing about how they'll "hustle" once they get Stateside or wherever will even get a visa. If one is eligible for a visa it should already be in the works and one wouldn't need to come to a public forum such as this one to sound airs. For those who think they can still get in and remain illegally in a country like the US in 2018, reality will hit hard and painfully. |
Left unchecked, the current diplomatic showdown between Canada and Saudi Arabia will have severe consequences for the Canadian economy -at least for the maritime areas, Quebec and parts of Ontario. These areas depend on oil imports from the middle East for gas and as the trans Canada pipeline is far from a reality gas prices and jobs will most likely take a hit. . . The elections in about 14 months time will be certainly interesting. For those interested, get your papers now. ![]() |
Arondizuogu:Anybody can say anything on the internet, anyone can make any claim these days. It is when evidence is presented and claims are substantiated that's when we know who is telling the truth. I have no theory, I was just presenting the facts as they appear. Your article made a claim and then surreptitiously presented skewed "evidence" to back it up. That should have caught your eye, no? Anyway now that we know where we are the beer parlour discussions can continue. |
Arondizuogu:smh I thought you'd rise to the challenge in my post and come up with substantial evidence of the numbers you have been throwing on this thread. . . but instead you resort to posting even more questionable data. . . Your Newsweek article is a prime example why (reasonable) people are running away from the mainstream media; They provide a report of the Nutrition Assistance Program in one state (Mississippi, see image below)and generalize for the whole country. lol No wonder fake news accusations have become a thing. Oga Americana, your initial claim remains unfounded as you have not shown any proof. PS: I chose a 2012 report earlier for a reason - and there are many other current ones as well. Trump wasn't president back in 2012. The data on the interwebs shows that ever since the 1960s minorities have claimed more government assistance than other groups.

Arondizuogu:Beer parlour syndrome is heavy in this post. How do you respond to the facts that point otherwise. http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2013/07/12/the-politics-and-demographics-of-food-stamp-recipients/ (ps: the interwebs is full with more recent data that corroborate the above)

kunzzy4me:Which youths? |
sleekchic:Hi* Nah, I don't think there is any reason to be alarmed as a permanent resident. After all, it was under the past conservative government that programs like the Express Entry and the Post-Graduate Work Permit were either modified or extended to help immigrants settle into Canada. What is reasonable to expect in a change of government though is a review or reconsideration of the immigration process especially as regards to refugees and asylum seekers. The conservatives are taking the current govt to task on the current illegal crossings. There may be some changes to the EE or PR programs but its very unlikely that such changes will be applied retroactively. As for jobs and housing those are typically subject more to market forces than say which government holds power even though govt policy plays an important albeit indirect role here. Welfare benefits is a different animal and may differ from province to province depending on who holds power and what their views are on that. . (Case in point: Ontario, under the Liberal government for the last 15 years, now has the largest subnational debt in the world and this is in part due to the govt giving welfare and other "freebies" that are not in line with its earnings as a province - You can surely expect the newly elected conservatives to revisit welfare in the province) With that said, I think it makes sense for those considering the move to Canada to do so now with the current regulations in place, it will be unreasonable to expect the immigration policies and programs to run forever. * You didn't ask me but I thought to post this in reply to your question |
salford1:I don't know about you guys but I was more than pleased when it became certain last week that Kathleen Wynne would lose the Ontario elections. The results from yesterday was the icing on the cake. Enough of the Liberals abeg, it will take decades to undo the damage they have done to the province as a whole all in the name of progress and development. We are not there yet but I think people are slowly realizing that much that is touted as progress by Liberal ideology results in the reverse. See Kathleen's province wide minimum wage hike early in the year; that was presented as something that would help the economy and improve the lives of low income earners. The result of that was that the cost of goods and services rose as businesses looked for ways to offset the increased labor expenses. The help to the low income earners was merely cosmetic; all they saw was a bigger paycheck that didn't result in more purchasing power. In my estimation that was enough of a reason that Kathleen would the elections in Ontario. Still, there are other reasons even more insidious that Liberals were voted out, one of which is their view and policy towards the traditional family structure. . . I look forward to the day when Liberals with their Disney princess, Justin Trudeau, are kicked out on the federal level. ![]() |
FYI all of you looking for short cuts and ways to jump the legal process; you will be deported. Read the link below https://www.nairaland.com/4512343/nigeria-bust-myths-illegal-border#67688746 |
There are more than 15,000 people on Canada's deportation list, including more than 900 Nigerians.More Nigerians will be deported, that much is certain. |
justwise:This post and the one above deserve a medal. Too many people in this travel section who don't research properly before traveling overseas or have an inflated sense of entitlement. |
I believe this is worth sounding here: Prepare yourself sufficiently by way of research and education before embarking on the high stakes project of immigration. Be clear, in as specific terms as possible about what it is you are looking for. In addition, arm yourself with the mindset and attitude of an achiever, knowing that you may encounter difficulties along the way but with confidence grounded in reality you will succeed. Otherwise, stay back in Nigeria. |
AdeyinkaSeun:Why will you decide to put up with a country that is worse than the one you came from? The prudent thing to do is to start the process of returning back to your home country. Granted that it will not be done overnight but the process is shorter than the initial immigration process. You can always go back home if your mind is made up. |
Afam4eva:They aren't slums by US standards, more like regular neighborhoods in some suburban area somewhere, nothing out of the ordinary. But you are correct those areas are over-hyped and overly expensive beyond reason. |
code7x:Long story, my point is this is fake news. Simple way to test the veracity of this report: Which company is closing down because they can't find workers? |
code7x:Smh OK let's give this another go Try reconciling the fact the US economy is doing very well with this story that says companies are closing down because of shortage of workers. My original comment stands; this is fake news. (in Trump's voice )The media is trying to suggest that the economy is in a bad place but the facts don't line up. BTW notice how they fail to mention even one company by name that is closing down, just bogus mentions of places. |
Fake news US unemployment figures as of January 2018 are still at a 17 year low of 4.1% The US economy is doing very well right now and it is poised for even more growth. Reporters like this would rather that illegal immigrants be allowed access or continued stay in the US. |
Beube:It appears now that coming to Canada is a fad among the middle class and below in Nigeria. If you are doing OK at home or are happy with the future you can build for yourself there why would you want to relocate to a place with a different culture and climate? Nigeria may not be the easiest place to live in but with focus and determination, as is required in every country in the world, maybe a little more, you can build a life that you find fulfilling there. With that said, immigrating to Canada should be for very specific reasons and not because all the cool kids are doing it. Those reasons will inform the areas where one settles and there are many of such areas. Canada offers living standards and opportunities that are among the best in the world today and the ease of settlement for immigrants is usually a factor of the research, planning and drive of said immigrants. There are many who have settled successfully and are making amazing strides in the careers and personal lives and there are those who are struggling. In the end, relocating is a personal project, one that should only be embarked upon after detailed research and planning. The challenges one may face, if any, are not a deterrent to those with the proper drive and knowledge. |
Its amazing how brazen we have become when people can openly solicit for ways to engage in criminal or illegal activities. While it may not be obvious, with this kind of behavior the seed is gradually being sown for anti immigration policies in the future for Canada. The time will come when the Liberals will leave power and a more conservative type of leader, not unlike Trump, will take office and Canada will close its doors to foreigners. The current government is naive but they are slowly realizing...the citizens are even more aware and the resentment is growing... the realization is spreading that many Nigerians are abusing the immigration policies in Canada right now. OP tell your "friend" to abandon his plan to enter Canada illegally. He will waste his time and money only to end up being deported back to Nigeria. There are several legit ways to enter the country, follow that route. |
NONNYG: Actually in Nigeria it is somewhere around 14% and rising while in the US it is around 4.5% and falling. https://data.bls.gov/pdq/SurveyOutputServlet https://tradingeconomics.com/nigeria/unemployment-rate |
fiendishghoul:According to the Human Development Index (HDI), a report used by the United Nations which is an aggregate of statistics covering things like education, life expectancy and per income indicators from virtually all the countries in the world, there are several countries ranking higher than the US. Countries like Norway, Australia, Switzerland and a few others have higher rankings than the US which ties with Canada on the No.10 spot on that list. Its funny how people on this thread are bashing the US based on anecdotal reports. Little or no attempt has been made to introduce an objective standard to compare the US and Nigeria here as is typical of Nairaland debates. By the way, on the HDI report Nigeria comes in at 152 (for 2016) out of the 188 countries on the list. http://hdr.undp.org/en/composite/HDI |
Pidgin2:While it may seem extraneous to this thread the reason I called out that pattern of thought is that it appears to be how you approach the real subject of this argument. We can let it rest now because you are indirectly admitting that any Nigerian, yourself included, who is not of Northern extraction is essentially a second class citizen. Let that sink in for a minute. |
timesup234:Going by the logic of the poster I quoted the fact that Northern Nigeria controls the political power (small elite or not) then people outside that ethnic group are second class citizens... otherwise, [s]everything you have written here doesn't count[/s] we can keep deceiving ourselves. But hold on a minute. If, by your own admission, there are more people suffering in Northern Nigeria, a region that constitutes the bulk of the Nigerian population, doesn't that run counter to the premise of the argument on this thread that Nigerians have it better in terms of life's material needs than the Americans? |
Pidgin2:Jeez, this is so lame. Funny how you lob in a snide remark like this then skid off under the pretext of not derailing the thread. Are you Hausa or a Northerner, if not then you are equally a second class citizen in Nigeria. Your ethnic background makes you second class otherwise you can keep deceiving yourself. See what I did there? |
Brector:Dude, it is not just a question as you innocently put it. You know what you are asking is illegal and if you didn't know this thread does not address those kinds of issues. Go read up on these threads https://www.nairaland.com/2624318/canadian-express-entry-federal-skilled https://www.nairaland.com/2103860/canada-visit-tourist-visa-discussion and https://www.nairaland.com/3948393/canadian-student-visa-thread-part. There always has to be someone who will mess up things for everyone else. |
Happy One Five Oh weekend for those celebrating
