I don't buy any of the conspiracy theories about the virus. I do not see any convincing evidence that this was premeditated, right now people are giving full flight to their conjectures and imaginations. When all the facts are available we will know what really transpired.

As for Russia, they along with a few other countries like Singapore and Japan were quick to close their borders hence the low infection rates. Nothing magical or sinister about that, just a common-sense approach.

However, it is next to impossible that this outbreak was premeditated or planned to achieve some form of economic superiority or advantage by anybody let alone the Chinese. Once the dust truly settles it is only logical that Western companies will be forced to review and rethink their supply chain dependence on China. A lot of changes will be coming in the future months and years which may well lead to companies insulating their supply chain flow from incidents like this. We will see.

There is no antidote per se for COVID19 at the moment.

I would have expected that at the early stages of this outbreak, the government impose travel restrictions on areas that have been hard hit by the virus. Flights from China have been running continuously and will only cease when the belated border closure takes effect tomorrow the 18th of March.

I would have expected that travelers coming through the country's airports be subjected to screening for symptoms of the Wuhan virus. I came through YYZ a couple of weeks ago from an overseas trip and asides from the one question at the airport's self service kiosks of whether one has been in the Chinese province of Hubei there was absolutely nothing done to ascertain or identify if I or the other thousands of incoming travelers were potential vectors of the virus.

Canada's healthcare infrastructure is subpar for a country of it's status so any number of preemptive measures should have been taken months ago to mitigate the effect of the added strain caused by this outbreak. Countries like Russia and Singapore shut down their borders real quick when this virus became a thing, they did this way before the wise officials at WHO thought to consider COVID19 a pandemic. Guess who will not be spending billions of dollars combating the Wuhan?

I must be missing something because I fail to see how the PM's approach up until now has been anything resembling
strategic or backed by scientific evidence... but if by calm and measured you meant laisse faire then you are absolutely correct.

A wealthy person has many ways of getting papers. They usually don't game the system. These people come in different ways. Maybe use their life-savings to try to cross into Canada from the U.S to try their luck. Some come for business, maybe they have a business conference, then cross, and so forth. No doubt it will appeal to all the bleeding hearts who are not forthright in their ways – or at least not forthright when it comes to the project of relocating to a new country. FYI Under the current gun laws Toronto has managed to achieve a higher crime level than New York. The summer of 2018 was infamously referred to as the summer of the gun because of all the shootings then. We will see what the numbers for 2019 are when they come in.

As it is clear from the posts here immigration is a hot topic. However, I stand behind my statement that immigration should be based primarily on the economic interests of the country. To add to the points already raised by SS1: The finances to run the current immigration system are staggering – irregular border crossings into Canada alone (a problem that has festered under Trudeau) cost the govt in the excess of $300m in 2017-18 and is projected to cost circa $600m in 2019 alone. The cost of the programs as a whole runs into billions of dollars. These are all costs borne by taxpayers. There is more it but with just this consideration alone it is common sense to match the immigration levels to what can be reasonably sustained viz-a-viz the expected and quantifiable gains from the program.
Still on the matter of illegal immigration, there are a projected 50K -100K people who will enter the country illegally in 2019 according to the CBSA. I think one media outlet stated it best;Trudeau’s #WelcomeToCanada virtue-signaling on social media led to a huge jump in illegal border crossings and asylum claims. His government’s changes to the asylum system — rubber stamping migrants from the most dangerous countries and eliminating fast-tracked deportations for bogus asylum claimants from safe countries — has opened the floodgates to those who seek to take advantage of Canada’s generosity.

Like in many other matters the current govt is seemly focused on the here and now... The cons are calling for a careful approach to this issue and unlike the libs who see it as the silver bullet (that has no downsides) to solve all of Canada's economic woes

Immigration is just one side of a multi-faceted election decision.

Interesting! I somewhat agree with you, save for the fact that Bernier and his crowd are highly against the mass immigration which has given tons of my brothers/sisters a shot at a better life.

I'm keenly following this election.

That's a hot topic. Bernier and the PPC say that the current immigration levels are unsustainable and they want to cut it by half. I think that is a sentiment that a growing number of people hold quietly but if they voice it in today's hypersensitive environment they will be termed a racist or whatever.

I also believe the current level of immigration cannot continue forever without any negative consequences for the entire country. Immigration policies should be rooted primarily in the country's economic and societal interest. Anything outside of that should be treated with heavy caution in my opinion.

Right now we are told that immigration is a net good for the country; meaning there are some negatives but overall it is good. I cannot help but ask then if the numbers keep increasing exponentially at what point is the net gain neutralized? I also have many questions as to what informs the immigration policies the Liberals are following but that is a post for another day.

So far I think the Conservatives have the best plan when it comes to immigration.

Because politicians do not face the consequences of their policies when it goes bad. Trudeau does not have any more skin in the game than any of the other candidates They will all find ways to evade any blowback from their policies that affect them personally.

I will concede that Scheer could have handled this way better than he did. First, this made the headlines because in the past the Conservatives had questioned others about their dual citizenship. Scheer himself questioned Michaelle Jean's legitimacy back in 2005 when she was up the governor-general's office because of her Canadian and French citizenship. This does make him look hypocritical.

In the grand scheme of things, this remains a non-issue. Same way Trudeau's brownface was a non-issue if you asked me... but with politics being what it is everyone is throwing dirt and hoping for some to stick.

I am actually in support of the PPC in some areas and would be more than pleased for them to take a 'bite off my bag' as you put it. Anything to stop the incumbents who appear to be more interested in virtue signaling, creating an atmosphere that is hostile to small business and entrepreneurship and their other policies that are divorced from economic and cultural realities in my opinion.

I know that part, You have to apply first for the job, then if you get an Offer and the employer likes you , then he can seek For LMIA for you. My indian friends schooled me that part clearly so I know whats up.
After the LMIA , you have to exit Canada and apply for a Work Permit. Then Later on PR.

What if you dont get a job? I'd think of Self employment. Several Provinces in Canada allow you to run business for sole proprietorship , without you registering. So its a win win for me.

That's not how it works. If you go to Canada as a visitor you will not be allowed to work in any capacity, whether self-employed or otherwise. The only way to get around this is illegal and you will suffer needlessly for any little gains till you eventually get caught by the authorities.

Also, no province or territory in Canada will let you set up a business without providing the necessary documentation and permits. There is no exception on this matter for citizens or PR let alone visitors.

There is no way to transition from a visitor to a PR without going through the pathways provided by the government. If you are intent on relocating to Canada and living a peaceful life you will do well to be guided by the stipulations on the IRCC site.

Be careful not to fall for the stories of people who claim they have ways of beating the system.

Dont get me wrong, I plan on maybe switching to Work permits or Self employment , there after i can convert to PR with any of the aforementioned ones i enlisted earlier. Possibly Angel investor.

FYI the only way to switch from a TRV to a work permit is if you come in as a student and have completed your studies. You cannot get a work permit as a visitor while in Canada.
