In addition to my earlier post, the declaration of a state of emergency in entire states is a limited action that requires the input of the National Assembly. Thats time that we don't have.

talk true:
It could have been better if the state of emergency is declared in the whole state of Borno because they will now relocate to another LG
If he had done it to the whole of Borno state, maybe some would have argued that he should have done the same to Bauchi and Yobe, cos boko haram can move to those places.
If he had done it to Borno, Bauchi and Yobe, some would have argued that he should have done it to the entire North East, cos boko haram can move to Jigawa etc.

It is a circular argument for those of us that can't be pleased.
Lets see it as a start, and if its not adequate, then we demand more.

Right, so you don't want to hear about any concrete plans or time-bound objectives. You just want me to start blowing some useless grammer like "national integration" or "social transmogrification".

If grammer had any value, Nigeria would have the highest GDP in the world. Continue your pointless thread without me.
Development is not built on spur of the moment thoughts without direction. The leaders of the cities that generate several times more revenue than the whole of Nigeria did not come by their revenue generation success with the sort of cut and nail suggestions you have made. Such success comes from organised deep thinking.
Some Nigerians think screaming solutions is the answer, but we have been hysterically screaming solutions without backing philosophies for 51 years now. What has that got us, if not more chaos?

What is required now is deep thinking, if that annoys you, it is a real pity.

Bye.

I will say it again, bharam are dissatisfied with  the way their leaders up North  have lost direction and purpose on upholding the legacies of Sardauna.  You want to understand why boko exist, the first thing will be to understand what Sardauna instituted for them as template for ruling.   Not only for ruling Nigeria but also for ruling their Emirates.  They have departed from their duties and boko has taken it upon itself to brung them back to line. . . . . it has installed intself as the renforcer for social order up there and without anyone authorizing it.   How did that happen?

Boeing to leapfrog F-35 with 6th generation fighter?

Not sure what to make of this story. Aviation Week's defence guru Dave Fulghum has come away from an interview with Boeing's F/A-18 programme boss Bob Gower with news the company plans a more advanced Block 3 Super Hornet and is working on a "sixth generation" fighter. According to Dave, Boeing thinks this pair will make a better package than Lockheed's "fifth-generation" F-22 and F-35.

So far, Boeing has avoided playing the generation game with Lockheed, although its Block 2 F/A-18E/F is widely and unofficially classified as "4.5 generation". Dave suggests the stealthier, longer-range Block 3 Super Hornet would be "4.75 generation". Boeing's sixth-generation fighter, meanwhile, would be available around 2024 and would be even stealthier and longer-legged, he says.

It will be interesting to see what the US Navy makes of Boeing's plans. So far, the Navy has stayed faithful to the F-35C Joint Strike Fighter despite its delays, and the only inkling of any future fighter plans has been a recent Navy reference to the Northrop X-47B unmanned combat air system demonstrator as a "critical step toward F/A-XX".

Maybe they mean the FA-37, from the movie Stealth,

My own conspiracy theory:
Boko Haram on the longrun will help northern Nigeria decide if it wants to catch up with the rest of the country or remain isolated forever. As it stands now,i think its going to be impossible for a full hausa muslim to ever become Nigeria's president again. Boko haram has succeeded in dividing the north forever by targetting christian northerners who unknown to many are not minorities(Northern Nigeria is now about 40% xtian thanks to southern kaduna and the rest of the middlebelt). A trend that has damaged the political might of Hausa-fulanis who once used the 'one north, one destiny' slogan to dominate the rest of Nigeria. Saudarna of sokoto and Tafawa Balewa must be shivering in their graves. If political heavy weights like IBB,Buhari and Atiku were denied the presidency by a nonentity southern xtian like GEJ, it tells u that the Cameroun therapy of hausa's started by Obj is now firmly on ground.
For those who dont know,Cameroun like Nigeria had a very powerful hausa muslim north who ruled the country since independence. But a power rotation deal in the early eighties moved power down south. Till today, northern Cameroun has not smelt power again.
Most of the Boko haram members are illiterate almajiris who are recruited and hoodwinked by faceless sponsors. Decieved into fighting a jihad ,but ultimately used a worthless pawns in a very bloody political chess game. The real Boko haram sponsors may even be southerners.
Hausas and the core north are the real victims of boko harm.
Excellent analysis.

@ndu_chucks & bolded

The only consequence of rigging an election should have been a vigorous challenge at the courts - it seems that Buhari failed woefully, and that should be the end of the matter.

Underage voters were voting up north, people were stuffing ballots down south - so what is the basis for all this violence?

For much of our 50-year history the northern elite rigged, couped & otherwise forced themselves on us as rulers. So I ask again, what is the basis for such violence in this case?

IBB single-handedly cancelled the fairest election in our history, but did you hear of any bombings? So I ask, what is the basis for violence in this case?

A virtually dead man ruled this nation for almost 3 years, with his minions & wife taking over rulership, instead of the constitutionally designated official of the Federation, GEJ. Did you hear of any bombings? Or was that not grave enough for you? So again, what is the legitimate basis for violence in this case?

I hope you are merely providing excuses for this violence. However, if politics is the basis for Boko Haram then the north has something else coming - Nigeria ends in 2015.

[s]I hope Beaf is not rejoicing over any of the above. I still think GEJ & his minions, like Beaf, have handled Nigeria badly over the last couple of years, but that does not change the above facts.[/s]
You are right in your analysis aside from the crossed out portion.

There are certain things that law and decorum observe as you have pointed out, and these are the things the core-Northern elite need to take on board. Getting boko haram to bomb innocent souls will not neither win elections, nor will it transfer power. In fact, it is a cold blooded tactic that has ensured revulsion from the rest of the country as well as the dead certainty they will not get into Aso Rock in the near future and possibly never ever again.

Ndu chucks mentioned a coup, I wonder who to rule over? I also wonder if he does not realise that it will be the surest signal for all out war, as they will have no allies and more than enough enemies? Nigeria is not the property of elites from the core-North, boko haram will never be a replacement for the ballot box.

Boko Haram probably did not set out to start a revolution, but Bisi Akande's take that BH's actions mark the beginning of a revolution is quite reasonable.

The cancer which has been eating up Nigeria is corruption perfected by PDP and the political elite in our country. These elite come from every part of the country, North, east, west, and South. Now GEJ had a wonderful opportunity to write his name in history, in golden ink, by organizing the best election in our history but he chose to break his own promise, run for the high office, and broke the gentleman's agreement that has held our fragile democracy together for many years. To make matters worse, he blatantly rigged the election further insulting our intelligence.

GEJ and his handlers are now faced with BH, a force they are incapable of dealing with.  BH indeed enjoys the support of the masses since the group is the only one which seems to be fighting for them. I'm afraid that we are only 2 or 3 bombings away from a situation where Nigerians will demand that the millitary takes over because of the inability of GEJ's government to deal with the security problem.

The time has come to send the irresponsible elites among us who continue to wickedly loot with impunity and take actions and inactions which result to the deaths of thousands of Nigerians, to permanent exile, one way or the other.

What's populist about massive retrenchment of civil servants? That word doesn't mean what you think it means. And please tell me when exactly any government used my "cut and nail policies" i.e. reducing wasteful spending and diverting the money to infrastructure development. Nigeria has always been a big government country.

You keep on asking what ideology I propose when I have already made it clear: smaller government, economic stimulus through investment in infrastructure, and judicial/police reform.
That is NOT an ideology. You really are missing the point.

@omo_to_dun
I feel you, but at some point, we need to stare our despondency in the face and fight back. If all we can do right now is talk, then lets do that; one day the vehicle to actualise our thoughts will present itself. It is all we can do to avoid depression and outright defeat.
However, lets not fold our arms and wait for the vehicle to arrive; there are little things we can all do in our spare. It might be giving to the poor, helping others or attempting to help wider society and communities. Do whatever little you can and lets reach out to one another to offer and gain support.

I and a couple of others have had a pet project that we've been incubating in our spare time for some time now. I introduced it on NL, only to be called a fraud by some small-minded types; in fact a couple of them followed me from thread to thread making the same offensive statements. But such will not dissuade us, we will keep pushing until breakthrough. http://www.afrosciencecommunity.com/

I agree with Beaf that the formulation of a national ethos, a common unifying ideology is the basis upon which sustainable development can be built. My question, however, goes thus: Why can't our leaders recognize this fact and call for a Sovereign National Conference where this and other issues germane to our existence can be thrashed out and discussed, so that we can emerge with such a shared national consciousness?
This should be our roar when we call for revolution.

So please keep on preaching your ideology on how we can move forward( the bold part below and in some of your other posts). I also believe that Nigeria can only move forward when we have a national ideology that everyone of us can relate to.

NB: i have been using the word chaos alot these days, and its because i find it to be the perfect word to describe what has been happening to our country for a long time. And i got that from your post. So lets try and put an end to this CHAOS so that we can have harmony and order.

You are right indeed.
Our problems stem from chaos that cold minded men take advantage of to create even more chaos in order to fill their pockets with blood stained lucre.
What Nigeria needs is a total restructuring. A restructuring that is done in such a way that the average woman, child and man can feel a sense of belonging and that they are valued.
The restructuring has to be guided by deep thinking that will produce a national philosophy and ideology, just like America and China for example.

It is our national philosophy that would project itself into coherent developmental and infrastructural strides.
As soon as we get things right, nobody would be able to use the weak to cause mayhem.

Thanks for your post, bruv. It was a good wake up call.
Politics › Re: We Have Work To Do - Cities With Higher Gdp Than Nigeria by Beaf(op): 12:00am On Dec 31, 2011
It is national philosophy and ideology that should tell you where to buil a road or railway line. You can't just build one for the fun of it. An ideology is a blueprint that drives national philosophy, which in turn drives national direction and development. It is this solid grounding that Nigeria lacks, so we jump up and do ad hoc things that are populist and only serve to increase the levels of chaos in the system.

It is national philosophy and ideology that should channel our ideas and direct our plans into a coherent whole that drives the nation forward as a unit. That is how China acheived greatness so quickly, whereas 30 years ago, the only stories from China were death by the millions and ravaging famines.
It is national philosophy and ideology that has kept America focussed and on top of the game.0

What is Nigeria's national philosophy and ideology? A gaping hole exists where that should be, and that ever widening hole has existed from October 1 1960, because our nation was founded on a fairytale. We need to cast that fairytale aside in order to mature and bloom as a great and successful country.

Call it what you will, but my plan makes more sense than whatever it is that Jonathan is doing presently.

A railway will spur economic activity and provide badly needed jobs for tens of thousands of potential Boko Haram recruits in the north, and in all the communities along it's path. The new policemen will improve the security situation as well as general law and order (I'm not sure if you've noticed, but Nigeria is ridiculously underpoliced). The retrenched civil servants make very little contribution to the economy and will not be missed. The same goes for the sacked senior policemen.

Everybody who knows anything about economics knows that spending on infrastructure stimulates economic growth. Even the pathologically dull Jonathan knows that we need to increase capital spending. Yet, when someone puts forward a plan to rapidly shift resources to where they can actually do some good, you call it "Oshodi methods". Well maybe we should just continue to do the same dumb shît we've been doing for the past 13 years and wait for Jebus to come down from heaven and save us.
I am not interested in what Jonathan is doing. Rather, I am asking that people apply their brains in a non-partisan way. I assume that is not above you?

Sadly, your suggestions are just more of the same unfortunate cut and nail policies that got us into a hole.
What we need is a path that is grounded in philosophy and ideology, not more populist claptrap. I don't want this thread dragged down the same Oshodi style crap that begins nowhere and ends up nowhere.

What philosophy or ideology do you propose? Its as simple as that.

NAIRALANDERS, i AM SHOCKED

NDLEA, was established to fight drug trafficking and sales but i can authoritatively tell what what they do.

1- THEY SIEZE THE DRUGS OF TRAFFICKERS
2- THEY TAKE IT TO THE ILLICIT DRUG IMPOUNDMENT ZONE.
3- THEY REPLACE THE BAGS OF DRUGS WITH FLOUR
4- THEY SELL THE IMPOUNDED DRUGS TO A TOP SHOT *I DONT KNOW WHO IT IS YET*
5- THE COLLECT MILLIONS FROM THE GOVERNMENT IN THE NAME OF "DESTRUCTION OF ILLICIT DRUGS"
6- INSTEAD OF DESTROYING THE DRUGS, THEY DESTROY THE FLOUR WHICH THEY USED TO REPLACE THE DRUGS
7- SOMETIMES, WHEN THERE IS MEDIA PRESENCE, THEY WILL PLACE A REAL DRUG IN THE MIDST OF FLOUR.

THIS IS HIGHLY DISTURBING!!!!!!!!!!

I DISCOVERED THIS TODAY AND I AM SHOCKED BEYOND ALL EXPRESSION,
My guy, you MUST get solid proof before posting. Get your solid proof and send it to BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera. As backup, use CNN Ireports (and similar).
Until then, your well intentioned post (if it isn't mischief) is at best a puff in the wind or a danger to yourself.

Be wise and follow proper steps.

Yes it was, and he put his own life at risk to acheive it. Why can't we find a single member of the core-Northern elite that is willing to do even half of that?

Dude, I am not a PDP man, please learn to tackle issues without attaching sillyness.
Aside that, all you have done is suggest anarchy without a thought as to how that anarchy will be realised. No nation can be run by applying Oshodi methods, thats what has got Nigeria where it is anyway.
