Buhari not a serious candidate, says ACN . Thursday, 03 February 2011 00:05 Nigerian Compass DAYS after the alliance talks between the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) collapsed, the rivalry between the two parties deepened yesterday. The ACN described the CPC presidential flagbearer for the April 9 election, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) as an unserious candidate. It said if not for Buhari’s unyielding nature, despite the compelling need to consider the overriding national interest, the alliance would have defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan. ACN accused Buhari of not demonstrating “sufficient seriousness and political will to forge a workable electoral cooperation” and has thus called off any alliance between it and the CPC. In a letter written by the party’s National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, and addressed to his CPC counterpart, Prince Tony Momoh, the ACN gave other reasons for calling off the alliance to include the fact that “it (ACN) no longer considers a merger feasible.” Akande explained in the letter that his party, which preferred a merger, commenced discussions with Buhari in 2005. “As proof of our willingness and sincerity, we even decided to adopt his party’s name and logo. This was when he was in ANPP. This dream never materialised,” the party chairman stated. He also explained that it was Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who pulled out of the National Democratic Movement, formed by opposition groups and parties at the time the ACN “pursued it with enthusiasm, dedication and great hope.” According to the ACN, even after the collapse of the NDM, it still pursued a relationship with Buhari and his party and that the CPC always preferred an alliance to a merger which, according to Akande, “has never been an attractive option and its workability is undoubtedly problematic because of the low level of literacy of the majority of our voters, among others.” The ACN chairman also explained that his party was glad with the turnout of the talks because it’s presidential candidate “Malam Nuhu Ribadu is very much in the image of General Buhari.” Akande, therefore, called for both parties to continue to work together “even after the general elections.” Speaking in the same vein, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said although he does not owe the PDP any explanation on the failed alliance with the CPC, he would explain reasons for the failure to Nigerians. He said the main reason the alliance failed was the recalcitrance and unbending attitude of the CPC, led by Buhari. ‘’For purely patriotic reasons and in the national interest, we made a lot of concessions to make the alliance work, but the CPC simply stuck to a take-it-or-leave-it attitude, behaving all through the talks as if it was the senior partner in the alliance. ‘’We invited Buhari to run for the presidency on the platform of our party. That means we were willing to even sacrifice our own candidate for the good of all. But the CPC insisted that not only must the alliance field Buhari, he must run on the platform of the CPC. ‘’We thought this demand was quite unreasonable, considering the pedigree of the ACN. Yes, CPC may be a popular party but it is largely untested. On the other hand, ACN is not only popular but it is well tested. We have four governors, many Senators and House of Representatives members, huge number in Houses of Assembly and many council chairmen. ‘’Going into April’s election, we have a Plus 3 Advantage, in that three of our governors will not contest and two will remain in office till 2014! ‘’But the people in the CPC want us to not only concede the presidency, but also to lose our identity, when they bring little to the table. Of course, we rejected that demand, which will be akin to committing political suicide. It was difficult enough having to explain to our members why we are offering to sacrifice our own presidential candidate for Buhari. ‘’To even assure Buhari, who is apparently smarting from the backstabbing he suffered from his former party, ANPP, we said if and when he wins the presidency, we can go to congress and change the name, logo and other identities of the ACN to reflect the new reality brought forth by the alliance. Again the CPC refused. We were left wondering whether indeed the people in the CPC believe in their candidate and want him to become President. ‘’Well, we can tell Nigerians that we have made the biggest sacrifice by offering to bring Buhari on board at the expense of our own candidate - just to save Nigeria from the stranglehold of the PDP. The offer we made to him is a great risk. After all, he can ride on our back to become president and then defect to another party or jettison the alliance. Didn’t the governors of Zamfara, Bauchi, Abia and Imo defect to the PDP? Didn’t a sitting VP decamp to our party? ‘’We leave it to Nigerians to judge which of the parties in the alliance remained unyielding to the end, despite the compelling need to consider the overriding national interest. But we will like to assure our teeming supporters nationwide and indeed all Nigerians that our party, going it alone, will ensure that the PDP does not steal the votes of Nigerians to secure another fluke presidential mandate. The clueless party is beatable, and we will send it packing!’’ ACN said. http://www.compassnewspaper.com/NG/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=74472:-buhari-not-a-serious-candidate-says-acn&catid=43:news&Itemid=799 |

Nigerian president sees oil reforms before May Wed Feb 2, 2011 5:14pm GMT (Reuters) - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said on Wednesday he expects wide-ranging reforms to the mainstay oil and gas industry to be passed into law before the end of the current parliament in May. Speaking during a visit to Turkey, Jonathan said the move would "give fresh impetus to the federal government's efforts to further liberalise Nigeria's oil sector and attract greater foreign investment", according to a statement from his office. The Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), long delayed by constant revisions, will re-write Nigeria's decades-old relationship with foreign oil partners, including firms such as Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil and Chevron. The proposed legislation will alter everything from the fiscal framework for offshore oil projects to the involvement of indigenous firms in the sector. Uncertainty over the plans -- which could significantly increase the cost of operating in Africa's biggest oil exporter -- have put billions of dollars of potential investment on hold, according to industry executives. The bill has been before parliament for months and with April presidential, parliamentary and state governorship elections fast approaching and political minds elsewhere, many observers had expected it not to pass under the current administration. http://af.reuters.com/article/topNews/idAFJOE7110G720110202 |
afam4eva:Quit playing the fool, cos you are really looking the part.
@beaf first am not a bruv ![]() that said pls can you tell us how we can manage to quash this zoning madness and change the mindset of 150million people that have been for the most part brainwashed (or hands tied)into thinking the zoning system is the only way the presidency in Nigeria can work? I need the 1st step kindly elaborate further
My apologies. Sis? ![]() The only way to kill any yearning for zoning is to eliminate the influence of ethnicity from govt. We can have a system where each etnic group is equally represented at the federal level regardless of size. This will ensure that no actions can be ethnically or regionally biased. I've suggested elsewhere that the easiest way to achieve that goal is by having an equal number of senator per ethnic group (one each would be reasonable); the house of rep can be left based on population. The purpose would be to ensure that by the time a bill gets to the senate, it would require several ethnicities to agree. Any such radical step would require fundamental constitutional change. I propose we begin to consider the above as part of a true federalism package. |
in a perfect world an aspirant and his vp can be from the same tribe and there could be a possibility of winning assuming each merit it but this is Nigeria, nothing is black and white in Nigeria whether we like it or not ,your tribe goes a long way in determining your success in a case like this this is sad but this is the reality we face in Nigeria today Thanks to the zoning method and so much foolishness in the past
I strongly disagree. We need to stop viewing Nigeria as something of a wild place where it is impossible for things that are normal in other places to make sense. We need to push to make things work. A lot of the time, you hear people say corruption is the bane of Nigeria, but if we pause for thought, ethnic and religious bigotries beat corruption hands down. They are the real elephants in the room. There is ethnic jingoism and nepotism at the national level, which in turn causes despondency and desperation that drives corruption at street level. I understand fully that ethnic bigotry and religious divisions cannot wished away with a simple wave of the hand. No, we must wrap it into a framework that defines us as Nigerian and gives us a common philosophy for existing, a common philosophy that binds us and results in a natural expression of patriotism (much like the US), a system that encourages self realisation and promotes merit. Right now, Nigerians have nothing to believe in, there is a chasm where our patriotism should be. The framework that can deliver these things, is true federalism. Lets strive for that and the impossible would become possible. Its in our hands bruv. |
afam4eva:Let me summarise things for you so you know how stupeedly you come across: Person 1 - Buhari chose a fellow Northerner as running mate Beaf - Nah, you shouldn't be thinking about ethnicity Person 1 - Why? We shouldn't have two Northerners running on the same ticket Beaf - We should consider only merit and not a persons ethnicity or region, so its ok for Buhari to have another Northerner FOOL - Really? Tell me why GEJ merits being President? Dense. How does the fools question fit into any argument on the page, it makes you sound daft. |
As it is now becoming customary, you are being disingenious. Constitution is basically the system of fundamental principles according to which a nation, state, corporation, or the like, is governed. In this case, Buhari is refering to the guiding principles for him and his fellow believers, he is obviously not referring to the Nigerian constitution. Olodo.
There is no definition of the word (except the one you made up in your village) where a religious book is referred to as a constitution. Religious books hold dogma's. |
^ The more you post in extra-size font, the more people conclude you are a sentimental fool. |
kingbobbyj:This is daft. What do you mean by "change?" Has Buhari laid out his plans? If not, where are you getting your so-called change from? Some of you just mouth things foolishly without actually understanding what you are saying. Is change an empty word? Dude, please refrain from mentioning my name when you inflict NL with your next dose of idiocy. |
afam4eva:I support merit. Period. I don't give a damn where it comes from or who the talented person is. If Buhari feels a person from Sokoto is best as his running mate, thats fine; let Nigerians judge by their qualities; not where they come from. |
Muza:No, you wrote it! As dull and stupeed as you are. People like you are not driven by any philosophy or ideology, you sort of ramble along driven by primitive ethnic, sectional and religious bigotries. Because of these things, you judge others from blindness and totally miss the point. Even fools know that I have always been anti-zoning and very strongly pro-merit. Those things key into my deeper ideology and vision; an empty vessel like you would never begin to appreciate where I'm coming from, cos your thoughts are disorganised, incoherent and scattered. You are incapable of articulating a position aside from the occasional primitive grunt triggered by a name from your ethnic group, section or religion. Dude, times are changing; you need to hinge your beliefs around a tested philosophy so you aren't condemned to skulking around and making snide remarks at those who can articulate positions in ways you can only dream off. But it’s not magic, all you need do is develop a philosophical view of Nigeria based on a tested ideology, until that day, your positions will continue to be partially evolved and of trash quality. Critical thinking is an art to be acquired. I know the average Nigerian doesn't have a low IQ, but on NL, one is pained at the poverty of intellect of some supposedly educated posters like yourself who can only go around pointing instinctively like they belong in a pack of monkeys. Dunce. |
lionness:It is obvious you have no ideology so you float in the wind and have no counter arguments. You go around re-registering on NL just say foolish things; anyways, congrats on reaching only 12 posts, yet having indepth knowledge of Beaf; you fool only yourself! If you no get argument, di best tin na to shut up. Nigeria couldn't have a worse curse than the pairing of two zealots (even if one na false prophet). |

opuro:Are you too cowardly to start a thread? I challenge you to do that and I'll be there to demolish and logically scramble you. Deal? This thread is about the unfortunate Buhari/Bakare combination and you can't derail it. |
^ Dude, religion and fake pastors like Bakare are a bigger problem than corruption, because they are corruption itself. Dig? ![]() Burst a gasket if you like, but the truth sir, is a bitter thing. As for house of rep and senate members, federal largesse under Buhari will determine how they vote to impeach Bakare, if he becomes troublesome. Don't forget the man has no political constituency to call on. |
