Princek12: But why have Northerners all these years not supported the deregulation of the power sector? I was just thinking about it. You are right; my theory has no basis, besides my own observation. Through tribalism, PHCN has been cornered as a very juicy parastatal. Corrupt officials can control the lucrative generator market by running the place down; they can resell transformers bought with govt money; enjoy maintainance contracts where absolute zich gets done, but full payment is made; they can also benefit from crude "roger" methods like the police etc, etc. Those are some of the reasons why people don't want PHCN privatised. . . .Maybe you should change the article title and body? |

@Mariory Those are pictures of commando's being helped and treated by the activists who seem to have acquitted themselves very well against members of Israels helicopter borne, abseiling special forces; Kenneth Nichols O’Keefe, a U.S. Gulf War veteran who was aboard the ferry, said he was among the activists who overpowered three Israeli soldiers, according to the Anatolia news agency.
“[The soldiers] looked at us, They thought we would kill them, but we let them go,” O'Keefe said, adding that he took the weapon of one of the soldiers and emptied it, according to the Anatolia report. http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/n.php?n=hurriyet-daily-publishes-photos-of-bloodied-israeli-soldiers-2010-06-06The lesson for the future is to apply less shock and awe against civilians and NEVER in international waters. There is nothing to differentiate Israeli commado's attacking a ship in international waters from the sort of pirates that are common off Somali waters. More important than the above, end the inhuman blockade. |

4 Play: I just realised that this thread was started by the benighted oaf called Beaf. Here is a quote from the first post
Zimbabwe adopts a set of policies, these policies lead to a regular contraction of the economy to the tune of 5-10 percent per annum, and some retard extols those policies on the first sighting of growth in 11 years! The efficacy of a policy must be judged by its outcome and contraction of 5-10% per annum for 10 out of the past 11 years is hardly something to celebrate, unless you are a consummate idiot desperately in need of a lobotomy like Beaf. Why do you people have to be so abusive? Is faulty genes, the gutter or what? Or are scared of making proper arguments, becuase they might be shredded? Its nice to point fingers at things we are ignorant about. Lets agree that the Zimbabwean economy has been poor, but how come they produce much more electricty per capita than Nigeria? Take finding that out as homework. Maybe an exagerated situation has been swallowed by the unthinking amongst us? I would imagine that a person with a grasp of the issues at hand would analyse the reasons why Zimbabwe's economy crashed in the past, weight that against the people in power in the UK and US; East African droughts; link facts with developments on the African continent and produce an intelligent contribution. But I guess, for some that's asking too much. I challenge you to leave out abuse and lets see how you match up. |

They have learnt from the totally different outcomes of Iraqs and North Koreas dally with acquiring nuclear bombs. In one case, empty boasts and threats of the "mother and father of all wars" were hauled, whilst allowing UN inspectors to dig up the gardens of Presidential Palaces in their search for "the smoking gun". In the end, no "the smoking gun" was ever found. End result? The country was bombed to smitherens in a "shock and awe" operation and it's leader hung by his neck. . . .Bad move Saddam! The flotilla incident leaves little room for anything other than chaos. The number of "peaceful protesters" outnumbers that of the second ship.

^ Representatives of the international press accuse Israel of editing videos and other evidence, therefore, it is very unwise to rely on video evidence (those released by Turkey as well) until there is an international inquiry by the UN.
I hold very firmly that sending commando's to divert a ship with 600 civilians on board was the worst decision Israel could have made. With that number of people, crowd control methods should have been the first Israeli consideration, but they chose to project fear and overwhelming might in an area with limited space (tight ships deck). . . And we all know what happens to cornered animals; a simple spark is all thats needed (maybe someone was sworn at, kicked or slapped; we don't know). First of all, it wasn't 20 or 30 people on board, but a whopping 600! What was the abseiling from helicopters meant to achieve? Film star status for the operation or effectiveness (that failed woefully)?
In this one, common sense eluded the Israeli planners and disaster resulted. The diversion of the Rachel Corrie was done conventionally, with men boarding from slow moving boats and no adrenaline crazed navy seals in dinghies doing any crazy stunts in the water around the boat. Easy!
In any event, Turkey claims that utopsies reveal that some of the dead were shot in the head up to 5 times, while others were shot while running away. While, this too needs to be verifyed by an international process, it places a lot of caution on the acceptance of the wider Israeli position. |

4 Play: So Zimbabwe managed one year of economic growth after forming a Govt with the opposition, and this vindicates Mugabe's hold on power?
I remember a Ugandan who noted how many Africans used to support relentlessly Idi Amin because he couched his policies as a struggle against Western imperialism and in terms of Black nationalism. It seems that for many moronic Africans, they would rather their fellow Africans starve in the name of sticking 2 fingers to the West.
Zimbabwe is a country which, after the land 'reform', received food aid from the West. How is the empowerment of black Zimbabweans achieved by making them poorer and aid dependent? Mugabe's hold on power is a totally different topic from the growing Zimbabwean economy (like oil and water). As for your claim that the land reform is making Zimbabweans poorer and dependent on aid, how come the economy is growing? Has the land been given back to the White farmers to allow for the free flow that magical elixir of economic growth only Whites can administer? If so, it is the best kept secret in the World. You talk about Tsvangiri. . . How much power do you think he has? Zanu-PF has simply bought over Zim's internal traitor; a few govt pecks keep Tsvangiri satisfied, well behaved and arguing Mugabe's case in European capitals (do a little google work). While we are at the racism thing, here's a bunch I found. Can Frosbel please check their veracity? 1. "There is a huge gap between us (Jews) and our enemies not just in ability but in morality, culture, sanctity of life, and conscience. They are our neighbors here, but it seems as if at a distance of a few hundred meters away, there are people who do not belong to our continent, to our world, but actually belong to a different galaxy." Israeli president Moshe Katsav. The Jerusalem Post, May 10, 2001
2. "The Palestinians are like crocodiles, the more you give them meat, they want more", Ehud Barak, Prime Minister of Israel at the time - August 28, 2000. Reported in the Jerusalem Post August 30, 2000
3. " [The Palestinians are] beasts walking on two legs." Menahim Begin, speech to the Knesset, quoted in Amnon Kapeliouk, "Begin and the Beasts". New Statesman, 25 June 1982.
4. "The Palestinians" would be crushed like grasshoppers , heads smashed against the boulders and walls." " Isreali Prime Minister (at the time) in a speech to Jewish settlers New York Times April 1, 1988
5. "When we have settled the land, all the Arabs will be able to do about it will be to scurry around like drugged cockroaches in a bottle." Raphael Eitan, Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces, New York Times, 14 April 1983.
6. "How can we return the occupied territories? There is nobody to return them to." Golda Maier, March 8, 1969.
7. "There was no such thing as Palestinians, they never existed." Golda Maier Israeli Prime Minister June 15, 1969
8. "The thesis that the danger of genocide was hanging over us in June 1967 and that Israel was fighting for its physical existence is only bluff, which was born and developed after the war." Israeli General Matityahu Peled, Ha'aretz, 19 March 1972.
9. David Ben Gurion (the first Israeli Prime Minister): "If I were an Arab leader, I would never sign an agreement with Israel. It is normal; we have taken their country. It is true God promised it to us, but how could that interest them? Our God is not theirs. There has been Anti - Semitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault ? They see but one thing: we have come and we have stolen their country. Why would they accept that?" Quoted by Nahum Goldmann in Le Paraddoxe Juif (The Jewish Paradox), pp121.
10. Ben Gurion also warned in 1948 : "We must do everything to insure they ( the Palestinians) never do return." Assuring his fellow Zionists that Palestinians will never come back to their homes. "The old will die and the young will forget."
11. "We have to kill all the Palestinians unless they are resigned to live here as slaves." Chairman Heilbrun of the Committee for the Re-election of General Shlomo Lahat, the mayor of Tel Aviv, October 1983.
12. "Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will do that . . . I want to tell you something very clear: Don't worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the Americans know it." - Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, October 3, 2001, to Shimon Peres, as reported on Kol Yisrael radio.
13. "We declare openly that the Arabs have no right to settle on even one centimeter of Eretz Israel, Force is all they do or ever will understand. We shall use the ultimate force until the Palestinians come crawling to us on all fours." Rafael Eitan, Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces - Gad Becker, Yediot Ahronot 13 April 1983, New York Times 14 April 1983.
14. "We must do everything to ensure they [the Palestinian refugees] never do return" David Ben-Gurion, in his diary, 18 July 1948, quoted in Michael Bar Zohar's Ben-Gurion: the Armed Prophet, Prentice-Hall, 1967, p. 157.
15. "We should prepare to go over to the offensive. Our aim is to smash Lebanon, Trans-Jordan, and Syria. The weak point is Lebanon, for the Moslem regime is artificial and easy for us to undermine. We shall establish a Christian state there, and then we will smash the Arab Legion, eliminate Trans-Jordan; Syria will fall to us. We then bomb and move on and take Port Said, Alexandria and Sinai." David Ben-Gurion, May 1948, to the General Staff. From Ben-Gurion, A Biography, by Michael Ben-Zohar, Delacorte, New York 1978.
16. "We must use terror, assassination, intimidation, land confiscation, and the cutting of all social services to rid the Galilee of its Arab population." Israel Koenig, "The Koenig Memorandum"
17. "Jewish villages were built in the place of Arab villages. You do not even know the names of these Arab villages, and I do not blame you because geography books no longer exist. Not only do the books not exist, the Arab villages are not there either. Nahlal arose in the place of Mahlul; Kibbutz Gvat in the place of Jibta; Kibbutz Sarid in the place of Huneifis; and Kefar Yehushua in the place of Tal al-Shuman. There is not a single place built in this country that did not have a former Arab population." Moshe Dayan, address to the Technion, Haifa, reported in Haaretz, April 4, 1969.
18. "We walked outside, Ben-Gurion accompanying us. Allon repeated his question, What is to be done with the Palestinian population?' Ben-Gurion waved his hand in a gesture which said 'Drive them out!'" Yitzhak Rabin, leaked censored version of Rabin memoirs, published in the New York Times, 23 October 1979.
19. Rabin's description of the conquest of Lydda, after the completion of Plan Dalet. "We shall reduce the Arab population to a community of woodcutters and waiters" Uri Lubrani, PM Ben-Gurion's special adviser on Arab Affairs, 1960. From "The Arabs in Israel" by Sabri Jiryas.
20. "There are some who believe that the non-Jewish population, even in a high percentage, within our borders will be more effectively under our surveillance; and there are some who believe the contrary, i.e., that it is easier to carry out surveillance over the activities of a neighbor than over those of a tenant. [I] tend to support the latter view and have an additional argument:, the need to sustain the character of the state which will henceforth be Jewish, with a non-Jewish minority limited to 15 percent. I had already reached this fundamental position as early as 1940 [and] it is entered in my diary." Joseph Weitz, head of the Jewish Agency's Colonization Department. From Israel: an Apartheid State by Uri Davis, p.5.
21. "Everybody has to move, run and grab as many hilltops as they can to enlarge the settlements because everything we take now will stay ours, Everything we don't grab will go to them." 22. "It is the duty of Israeli leaders to explain to public opinion, clearly and courageously, a certain number of facts that are forgotten with time. Yoram Bar Porath, Yediot Aahronot, of 14 July 1972.
23. "Spirit the penniless population across the frontier by denying it employment, Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly." Theodore Herzl, founder of the World Zionist Organization, speaking of the Arabs of Palestine,Complete Diaries, June 12, 1895 entry.
24. "One million Arabs are not worth a Jewish fingernail." -- Rabbi Yaacov Perrin, Feb. 27, 1994 [Source: N.Y. Times, Feb. 28, 1994, p. 1]
25. "We Jews, we are the destroyers and will remain the destroyers. Nothing you can do will meet our demands and needs. We will forever destroy because we want a world of our own." (You Gentiles, by Jewish Author Maurice Samuels, p. 155).

netotse: you see beaf, this is where i take issues with you lot. . .their goal wasn't to expose jack, their goal was to provoke israel and make them look bad, i'm sure there are better ways to expose such things.
y'all refuse to admit that the first set of activists were a scam, the second despite all the evidence that has been amassed, can you honestly say you agree intoto with all the 'activists' did? you lot have consistently refused to answer that question, er'time it's asked y'all come up with a post about how israel is the spawn of lucifer and all. . . "Spawn of lucifer"? . . .Anyways, I have always pointed out that Western protesters are the most provocative, difficult and tenacious bunch of people you can ever come across. Like I said in a reply to you above, the protesters set out to expose certain things and they have succeeded brilliantly, because Israel reacted overwhelmingly disproportionate violence and bravado. Why the need for helicopters? Why raid at night? Why have navy seals in dinghies performing crazy stunts and zig-zagging around civilian boats? We are talking about the special forces units of a developed country here, not some rag tag militia. Have you seen the way the same country boarded the Rachel Corrie today? It was civilisation to the core; why such a vast difference in one week? Perhaps, they are learning to drop thuggish behaviour. |

BOMANY: In myy opinion, the issue is not religious case at all, it is matter of truth and justice. We do not deserve to be human beings if we allow inhuman and brutal actions without punishment or at least stopping it That is a fact, every drop of blood is precious. The sad thing is that those who choose to view events through a religious prism cannot see the value of a human life if it causes them to ask difficult questions about their dogma. It is the additional dogma baggage some folk carry that stops them understanding that this thing is not about religion. |

netotse: i read the entire thing. . .yep truth be told from the article, it seems israel has gone about it in a way that causes avoidable suffering to many, i'm sure if they wanted hey could avoid that. . .
however those pseudo-activists have only served to make matters worse. The activists set out to throw light on the gross injustices in Gaza (more than merely provide aid) and have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, simply because Israel does not understand restraint and as expected, employed a barbaric degree of violence. With that singular Israeli action, the activists have been justified. |

BOMANY: They believe that supporting Israel in all conditions and any situation is a matter of faith, they won't be Christians if they do not support Israel blindly. We should condemn any action against humanity regardless the religion of the perpetrator, Christian, Muslim, Jew or any other faith or without faith at all. Doing good for humanity is always good and doing bad will be always bad The funny thing is that the Jews aren't Christians and don't even believe anything about Jesus or the new testament. As far as belief in Jesus is concerned, Muslims are far closer to Christians than Jews will ever be. Please Christian extemists, hug your brothers. |

netotse: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockade_of_the_Gaza_Strip
ok. . .i read the wikipedia article and from it i can see that israel is restricting the amount and types of aid that is allowed into gaza, i mean why should you turn stuff back because it is a luxury?
that said. . .i still dont blame them for the events on the ship!
i just might not be off the mark. . .you emboldened the headline and then pasted an entirely different article under it, are you trying to mislead people?
post edited, romany corrected himself I've tried to post excepts of that article but the spambot keeps gobbling it. read down to the reaction of the United Nations; the whole blockade thing is shocking and evil. Here's the link; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockade_of_the_Gaza_Strip#United_Nations |

ElRazur: You do not send boy scouts to search a ship you see, but I will await your alternative approach.
You do not provoke one of the best military forces in the world and not expect a backlash.
Yeah the force is disproportionate, but it may not have happened, if there wasn't any armed protest in the first place.
You see, when no violence means was offered today, there wasn't any violence given back either. Shock horror! There were no dinghies doing crazy stunts, while gung ho terrorist commando's abseiled down from helicopters to shoot invade the Rachel Corrie today. No, the Israeli's are getting more civilised after the international outcry. The latest boarding was done with the least display of force (perhaps, it really was boy scouts), if things had been approached that way with the flotilla, there would be no needlessly spilt blood and no outcry. |

I found some good summary info on the UN position on the legality of the Gaza blockade. It is really depressing. Enjoy. On January 24, 2008, the United Nations Human Rights Council released a statement calling for Israel to lift its siege on the Gaza Strip, allow the continued supply of food, fuel, and medicine, and reopen border crossings.[78] According to the Jerusalem Post, this was the 15th time in less than two years the council condemned Israel for its human rights record regarding the Palestinian territories.[79] The proceedings were boycotted by Israel and the United States.
On December 15, 2008, following a statement in which he described the embargo on Gaza a crime against humanity, United Nations Special Rapporteur Richard A. Falk was prevented from entering the Palestinian territories by Israeli authorities and expelled from the region.[80] The Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Itzhak Levanon[81] said that the mandate of the Special Rapporteur was "hopelessly unbalanced," "redundant at best and malicious at worst." [82]
In August 2009, U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay criticised Israel for the blockade in a 34-page report, calling it a violation of the rules of war.[83]
In March 2010, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon stated that the blockade of Gaza is causing "unacceptable suffering" and that families were living in "unacceptable, unsustainable conditions".[84]
A UN Fact Finding mission lead by South African Judge Richard Goldstone suggested that the blockade was a war crime and possibly a crime against humanity: "Israeli acts that deprive Palestinians in the Gaza Strip of their means of subsistence, employment, housing and water, that deny their freedom of movement and their right to leave and enter their own country, that limit their rights to access a court of law and an effective remedy, could lead a competent court to find that the crime of persecution, a crime against humanity, has been committed."[7] The Goldstone report recommended that the matter be referred to the International Criminal Court if the situation has not improved in six months. In May 2010, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated that the formal economy in Gaza has collapsed since the imposition of the blockade.[85] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007%E2%80%932010_blockade_of_the_Gaza_Strip |
