UNILAG Suspends Academic Activities For Two Weeks
Leadership Editors's picture
Wed, 30/05/2012 - 12:23pm | AGENCY REPORT

The Senate of the University of Lagos on Wednesday directed that all academic activities in the institution be suspended forthwith, for two weeks.

The directive is contained in a statement signed by the university's Deputy Registrar, Mr Seth Dare, which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to the statement, all students are to vacate their halls of residence, latest by 11.00 on Wednesday, May 30.

``In view of the recent developments on our campuses, the Senate of the University has directed that all academic activities be suspended for two weeks.

``The university security has been mandated to ensure compliance,'' the statement said.

It, however, said that the burial arrangements for the institution's late Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe, who died on May 12, would still go on as planned.

Students of the university marched through some major streets in Lagos Mainland on Tuesday protesting the re-naming of the institution after the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola.

The university's new name of Moshood Abiola University was announced by President Goodluck Jonathan in a National Broadcast as part of the activities to mark the 2012 Democracy Day on Tuesday.

Jonathan had explained in his speech that the institution was re-named after the late politician because of Chief Abiola's contributions to the enthronement of democracy in the country.

NAN reports that the students’ protest continued on May 30, with some of them blocking the 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

The University of Lagos, which is Federal Government-owned, was founded in 1962. (NAN)

Gbawe: I forget that , as a failed 419ner and scammer, you are a jobless and homeless hobo who sleeps under the bridge in London. You must be the only fool who does not know that , as a very common example, Train Station waiting rooms are heated in the UK. I guess those waiting rooms are owned by Uduaghan and not classified as heated public space. Olodo. Obvious you are the only liar here. A very m.o.ro.nic one as well.

Anyway, when you are jobless and homeless, how will you ever have need for a Train Station waiting room? If you will carry on this groupie thing, at least try and rent a decent brain.

I have told you to forget about whatever transpired between MKO and IBB.
Everyone cuts one corner or the other
and I'm not sitting here to discuss with you about tales of conspiracy and betrayal.
I'm discussing the life of a HERO.
I'm showing you the reason MKO is a proclaimed hero.

I will give you an assignment now LIKE your teachers do.
Search through the history of Nigeria back and forth, from cover to cover and name any PHILANTROPIST like MKO you find.
He funded over 60 secondary schools, built over 100 mosques and churches in the nation, has over 150 traditional titles bestowed on him from different communities all over the country, he built libraries, his boreholes provided free water for tons of people.
HE gave money to people in need resiliently like free wine,
or have you forgotten so soon that ABIOLA bookshop he built where people who could not buy a book could go and get for free?

HE probably touched more people in his lifetime than a combination of you and your grand father(pls no offense) has done.

And you wonder why people rallied round and supported him in mass?
You wonder where that CHARISMA came from that even village people loved and wanted him?

Listen here GANJA-JUNKIE. . .

If there is any HERO you want in times like this, who would touch so many lives directly, he is someone LIKE MKO ABIOLA.
A PHILANTROPIST passionate to just keep helping and helping people.
He is more than a HERO.
Tell them, bro. We didn't get out on the streets to risk our lives for a man without essence.
MKO was a very great man that touched many lives in ways no individual has in the annals of Nigeria.

Gov. Amosun spend N1.3b to EXPAND and not construct a road of 2.4km

Take Note of this!

(a)  The road itself and the desirability of its expansion vis-a-vis its socio-economic significance.

(b) The number of kilometres involved in relationship with the cost of contract.

The stretch of road has no concentration of medium or big businesses. No concentration of Banks, Petrol Station, Government office, Hotel, entertainment outfit or edifice of note, and importantly, the road does not experience any major traffic gridlock to have warranted this luxury expenditure.

This is to say the
expansion is a waste, undesired and a self serving initiative to siphon state funds; suffice it to say that his uncompleted mansion is located within the area.

Mathematically, Amosun is constructing a kilometre for N500million!

Is that development?

Gbawe: Once again, this is the mischief you display time and time again that shows you are one of those who contribute not based on what is written but according to opposing/siding with certain posters. My talk of weather is in response to the nonsense below you had no comment about:

My talk about weather is to highlight how the argument above is totally stupid. Obviously you don't have a problem with it because it is submitted by one of your co-travellers in mischief.

Naturally, London's focus will be more to do with heating being a generally cold City for much of the year. Why should anyone then ask a Nigerian State to take its cue from London considering the entirely different climatic challenges of both?

Are you as stupid as the i.di.ot who submitted the above not to know that London spends a massive amount heating public places throughout the year thereby nullifying the silly argument of your 'pal'? That is my point. The weather dictates that London spends on heating, most months of the year, and not air-conditioning. This, the City indeed does. Weather challenges also means Nigeria can do the opposite if funds and priority allow i.e spend on cooling to keep citizens comfortable. Seriously, you guys are ruining this forum with how you go around opposing others routinely from thread to thread without engaging your brain or comprehension skills.

salakobaba: What is all this noise about weather condition, people walk and work inside the sun and rain everytime, they'll only spend 3-5mins on the bridge depending on the distance and how fast the person is, then they'll return back to the sun or rain or whatever, so what has weather got to do with this.
The worst part is that from the video I have posted, the road does not even need a pedestrian bridge. Traffic is quite light on it and zebra crossings would do just fine. Zebra crossings are just paint (a few thousand quid only).

What we have here is very dangerous poverty of imagination and very likely, a nake'd lounge at the "cookie jar."

Gbawe: My brother, learn to ignore the imbecilic m.o.r.on. What is the point responding to a dull.ard who writes:

Even the slowest of r.etards knows that the UK does not share climatic conditions with Nigeria. In fact comparing the UK's climate to that of Nigeria is like comparing night to day. The olodo is not bright enough to see that the UK spends inversely far more assuaging the discomfort of climate by heating trains and public places. It is clear, some in their haste to oppose others, fail to engage their brain before speaking. The UK has more need for heating than cooling. The opposite is true for Nigeria.

The Countries we do share climatic conditions with use air-conditioned footbridges also and , unless costs and total scope of projects are enumerated, we are only pandering to ignorance shouting here. I would personally like to gain more information about the project in its entirety before commenting either way.
Seriously, you are a real fool. Is this not Totoro Road where the wonderful "airconditioned" Bridge is going to be? Does it look any different from a battlefield for poverty? Who needs an airconditioned bridge to cross any road, talkless of one that looks as much a witches playground as that one?

Gbawe: Usually, some pedestrian bridges are totally enclosed for safety reasons especially when they link malls and or buildings. If the design decision is that an enclosed footbridge works best, then it must be cooled also. I am not saying I support this but we should not condemn it routinely either without knowledge of the entire scope of the project.

Enclosed airconditioned footbridges , such as that seen below, are common and can be a design/architechural neccessity in relation to what will be linked. We just don't know enough to be entirely negative.

Why is it you that is always present to defend lies and stup!dity? What is wrong with you?
You claim to live in London, can I ask where in that illustrious city you have seen an airconditioned bridge? Let us take note that the budget for Greater London alone is two thirds of that of the entire Nigeria. If there is no airconditioned bridge in London, rich as it is, why should there be one anywhere in Nigeria where shocking poverty is rife?

It is clear as daylight that the money for this wonder bridge is being lined up to be stolen. For what reason outside stup!dity does anyone need to be airconditioned on a bridge?

Pukkah: Sincerely, the arguments against the rejection are obtuse and rooted in pure sentiments. It's actually embarassing to listen to many of the arguments from supposed graduates. So Nigeria has sunk this low!
To be honest, I can't understand it. It seems almost like people are claiming that a brand name is bigger than the name, meaning and sacrifice of Abiola.

Abiola lived in Lagos, the pro-democracy riots were centred in Lagos, Kudirat Abiola his wife was shot at 7Up junction on the route to the new Ojata Freedom Park. Everything about MKO has Lagos written on it, yet he is being so crudely rejected.

Most of those who are doing the rejection today, ran away when we were carrying out the struggle in the streets, facing amoured cars and tear gas bombs dropped from helicopters (you could hear the explosions from miles away). Where were this Judases when we were facing Abacha eye-ball to eye-ball?

Meanwhile has the national assembly amended the law setting up UNILAG ? He probably want to carry out a coup then go back to the National assembly to legalise hid illegality .
Those with the thinking MKO is not loved should forget that cheap thinking...
It sounds like a very solid rejection of MKO from where I stand. I will repeat that I am very proud to have personally taken part in MKO struggle as a mere teenager, indeed I visited his house at Opebi on quite a few occasions.

What is going on is deeply shocking, embarrassing and painful. The arguments for the rejection only sound more foolish with each passing minute.
