Nigerians abroad are the reasons why Nigerian is painted black and blue by the international community, they thus have no reason to talk about Nigeria being bad- they contribute to the problem and what moral right do they have to call Nigeria hell hole, jungle etc?

It was no low blow, and with the above post you have taken C# fan-boyism to the zenith. The response you had to my demonstration of the advantage of a verbose use of the import directive is a case in point. You have no clear understanding of what you tout, and that is what fan-boyism is all about.
I'm not rude like you otherwise, I would have told you point blank that you don't have a clue about the meaning of verbosity.

You remit home to feed your family- do you deserve a national award for that? Nigeria will not die if you fail to send money home, beside, you are paying back the money you raised from your family to travel, so whats the point making it a big deal? Abeg, scratch my butt hole, you send money back home and so what?

Refused visa, this is the ultimate rant- where have you been that others havent been or better? It is lack of anything good to say that makes you think someone is a deportee or refused visa to travel, it is a baby talk, hold no water. say something else.

In developed countries it isn't anything out of the ordinary to sport senators etc on the public transport system.

The day I see Dimeji Bankole on a GUO bus with ordinary Nigerians, I will believe the country is on the mend from being a jungle and a failed system. Because on that day, you would know that he has become accountable to the people (instead of a god of corruption with life and death power over anyone that dares. . .).

We don't even have to go as far as the developed World. Right next door in Cotonou, when the president is leaving home, all you see are a couple of armed police men (with guns pointing downward); they stop the traffic on both sides of the road and then hop into their two car motorcade. No siren. . . Thats it.

Most of the innovation in Java actually comes from the Open source Community. Sun hasn't done a good job in improving Java in recent years i was actually one of those people happy that about the recent takeover
Whether Sun's Java lisences are actually open source is another debate. As far as I know, the OSS community only creates libraries, they really have no say over the direction of java as a language.

How do you guys living in Nigeria know about what's going on if not for the media? That's also how we get our info and strength to argue.

If u check around (esp on the web) on issues relating to enterprise application development, references are always being made to J2EE. This framework is used as a benchmark for enterprise applications. .NET is just playing catch up in this aspect application devpt. .NET's framework's strength lies in its aesthetics and making writing applications easier and intuitive by employing drag and drop principles (of which IDEs like NetBeans is now doing).Java is generally regarded as a verbose language. However Java IDE's of nowadays are fast catching up or almost at par with the .NET IDEs in terms of ease of use and developer's experience. Now I'm not saying that you cannot use .NET to build enterprise applications but ask yourself this question, why is J2EE regarded as the de-facto standard in enterprise application development?
I know you're just joking sha.
Firstly the is no longer anything like J2EE (outmoded) in java's latest incarnation (its now Java EE). You clearly aren't up to date. . . And, sorry .NET is a Developers wet dream.

"Enterprise application development"? Thats where the areas we are currently discussing apply (concurency, parallel computing, GPU support etc). Java has no idea of whats going on in these areas, what exactly do you mean by enterprise application development?

Click on this google search and rejig your thinking on outmoded "J2EE"

Beaf,

Is it that they irritate or the truth irritates you guys living back home in Nigeria?

It is amazing how less than 300,000 corrupt politicians and ex-military officers can hold the country hostage, when we have a population of over 150 million.

Just shows the level of greed pervading our country. People are happy to keep silent as long as they are picking the crumbs from the table.

Change will come with a big bang!!! Watch out!!!!
They irritate everybody (at home and abroad), because the Nigerian born and raised abroad has only a single viewpoint that does not take Nigerian perculiarities into consideration.
Whether we like it or not though, we have forced a massive proportion of our population to seek greener pastures abroad. These folk, regardless of their cultural leanings, are no less Nigerian than those born and raised in the country (it is why they come here); we have to learn to deal with that and see them as a very important component of our human resources (especially in a a World built off increasingly sophisticated global connections).

If some Nigerians abroad are in charge of very advanced systems, yet cannot contribute to development back home, why should we think they aren't entitled to consider the power situation, transportation, ritual killings etc as hell, the jungle etc? even to the Nigerian back home, are these things the signs of paradise?

Lets be real.

Majority of Nigerians living outside Nigeria that tend to discuss issues concerning Nigeria in my opinion are not at home with the reality on ground and most of the comments coming from these group of people are at best false and half truths. . .
Only those born and raised abroad.
And yes, they can irritate, but they aren't any less informed; their cultural eyes are just different.

A Nigerian who has lived in more than one country and experienced different views of the same thing (eg technological approaches) can be better placed to deal with issues than a person who lives exclusively in Nigeria.

check out these blogs

http://my.opera.com/zomg/blog/2007/08/18/verbose-programming
http://lesscode.org/2005/12/28/verbosity/
Lets deal with the links you supplied.

If you think about languages like Visual Basic which are naturally more verbose than PHP or C with constructs ending usually in end construct-name and not { } you can immediately see how much easier it is to comprehend the code, especially for beginner programmers.
http://my.opera.com/zomg/blog/2007/08/18/verbose-programming shocked

When we sink to the levels of praising VB shocked because of the innadequacies of our language, either something religious is going on or a grave error is in the offing! VB, a very bad thing, as evidence of something "good"? Tufia! This is toture!

The verbosity of Java code also encourages developers to implement more abstractions and reusable components. The ease of coding in some languages often results in more code, in my experience. It’s easier to just write more code than to stop and think about reusable solutions. In Java and other verbose languages, ‘coding for the moment’ is a losing strategy.
http://lesscode.org/2005/12/28/verbosity/

That sums it up pretty neatly grin. Verbosity is useless in OO. Java is almost in the same class as classic ASP.

I still need help

I really wonder what you want to know again. I developed this application. It is an inventory application. It runs very well on a single system but I want to network it and it's giving me a hell of problems. Funny enough I've been able to network the hotel management system I developed using the same vb6 in the same location but the Inventory system is not responding fine.

It keeps giving me the error:

error 3051 - "The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file <name>. It is
already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. (Error 3051)"
You have a problem with your connection being opened by a user without the file permissions to open the db. Try "Full Control" for the connecting user and work downwards. Better still, dump your file based MS Access db for Sql Server Express (you will have to enable remote connections). Sql Server Express is free.

Don't you think if you had posted the error info above, you could have recieved a solution since (God alone knows how many times I have passed by this thread). When people who can help ask for more information, either supply it or help yourself.

Has .NET 4 been released or is it still in beta

I like Java but i am more of a fan of the JVM. I know the limitations of Java in the client side that was why i said earlier that it is more useful on the server side. What I am tryin to evalute with you is how PHP is better than Java on the server side

Mind you. it is not all systems that are for the web. There are a whole lot of complex software systems that do not require any form of GUI or a web front end at all. Interaction is strictly from the command line
.NET 3.5 already allows for parallel computing. The current capabilities are getting seriously expanded in .NET 4 with official support for concepts like Software Transactional memory http://channel9.msdn.com/shows/Going%20Deep/Software-Transactional-Memory-The-Current-State-of-the-Art/

half of what huh you ask.

Half of white and half of black I say!!!

The problem with you uptight lot is that you always want to create an issue where there is none, do you realise that 99% nigerians refer to a mixed race/mullato as a half castehuhhuh are you now telling me that the entire nation is racist??, and do not bother asking where I got that statistic from except you are daft!!!!, Only when you cross the border to UK or US do you realise that they do not accept dem words, Hence my reason for saying people do not always mean bad, to nigerians, it is a description.
This is really sad. embarassed
The term half caste was introduced by the whites but, even they no longer use it (for the same sort of reasons that it is a crime to be a member of a Nazi party).
As a leader, you must disabuse the minds of all those who look up to you, make them understand that to use the term "half caste" is to denigrate all black people as half human.

Where in those quotes of mine above did I say "Verbose is ALWAYS acceptable" or "Verbose always lead to BETTER readability" (inverting your assertions)?

I demonstrated using an example the usefulness of verbosity in Java. You should demonstrate where verbosity is not useful, using examples.
Verbosity has little value in the oo world. Consistent verbosity speaks of band aid architecture.
