Kobojunkie:
There is a difference between a TERSE LANGUAGE and writing TERSE CODE. Same way there is a difference between a language being VERBOSE and a developer writing VERBOSE CODE.
Verbose languages leave wide room for introduction of bugs during development; you notice code is less MANAGEABLE, increase in testing time, as well as resource consumption, and in some cases less readable code.

.NET Languages are not necessarily all Terse. Many of the languages give you the flexibility to choose to write verbose code, but with the option to go the other way if you really wanted to save time, effort (reduce development and testing time), and increase throughput.
Hehe. You really do have choices.
eg, you can can create or overwrite a text file, using a built in .NET function in a single line of code, like so;
File.WriteAllText(string path, string contents); cool

Or suffer in a "javalike" way like so; grin grin grin
public static void WriteAllText(string path, string text, Encoding encoding)
{
    if(String.IsNullOrEmpty(text)
    {
        return;// better to raise an error here
    }
    using (StreamWriter streamWriter = new StreamWriter(path, false, encoding))
    {
        streamWriter.Write(text);
    }
}

private static bool IsNullOrEmpty(string text)
{
    if (text != null)
    {
        return (text.Length == 0);
    }
    return true;
}

Are you sure you know what you are talking about? Verbosity actually leads to less bugs. A terse language is more likely to incur bugs than a verbose one. Reason being the terseness leads to complexity of expressions and therefore confuse developers.
Try coding a modestly complex app in the most verbose of them all, assembler. . . And experience a truly useless way to fry the mind grin.

We need to face the man squarely for what he said (bearing in mind that this is very old and outdated news).

We also need to be civilised and not attack any ethnicity. If Ika people call themselves Igbo, who are we to deny them their ethnicity? To the best of my knowledge, they have always been called Ika Igbo, Bendel Igbo or Delta Igbo.
Igbo is Igbo, leave wahala jare.

Wow! I've heard it all. Verbosity leads to a proliferation of frameworks?
No, kobo is saying; verbosity leads to directly to bugs, sweat and blood. In order to avoid this, several frameworks have been built to address specific issues (only to be forked, then re-forked, then re-re-forked, thus blowing the brains of its developer victim's grin).

Anybody who knows enough about the development of Java as a language will tell you that Java was actually considered even stronger on the client-side (applets) than on the server-side circa 1999. At the moment, the client-side is almost done with, and it has matured into a solid server-side development language.
Its is more complicated than that. Both java applets and activex were a conduit for security problems, so they fell out of favour. That left desktop java to compete with other technologies; java products turned out to be slow and ugly (a no-no for users), so java was ditched as a desktop technology. That leaves the internet; in the beginning, there was j this and j that, but all quickly lost out to ease of use, security and performance etc of ASP.NET (to all who could afford steep MS lisences). Finally leaving java to exist primarily on linux servers, where it has the advantage of being free. . . But Mono is gaining useful market share here as well.

All the above is not to say java doesn't have its strengths, the latest incarnation seems to have caught up with C#'s performance in some areas, but its too little, too late. It has a mountain to climb in functionality; perhaps java can still make a place for itself in poorer countries where no one can argue with the price of free; but for quality? Its been left behind.

Politics › Re: Is Development All About Personal Wealth? by Beaf(op): 6:30pm On Nov 07, 2009
There is obviously something the FG is missing (matter of fact, it is several things) that could make an individual so committed to both his country, company and fellow humans: he is a completely balanced individual.

Tadashi Yamashina, senior managing director and head of Toyota’s motor racing unit, said through tears that he was sorry for Toyota’s racers, especially the team’s Japanese reserve driver, Kamui Kobayashi. Toyota’s main drivers for the 2009 season were Jarno Trulli of Italy and Timo Glock of Germany.

“The drivers have grown, together with the team,” he said, trailing off as his eyes welled with tears. He spent the rest of the news conference heaving and sighing and dabbing his eyes with a handkerchief.

Alongside Yamanashi, Toyoda, a member of the company’s founding family who took over in June, presented himself as a realist who was not afraid of making tough decisions. “I have always been one of motor sport’s most ardent supporters,” he said. “But since becoming president, my responsibilities have changed. I felt that we needed to shift the company’s resources. Eco-friendly cars are our top priority.”
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/sports/autoracing/05prix.html

What a guy! What a guy!

Tadashi Yamashina is not a spirit, neither is he made off special stuff, it is just a coincidence that he was born in a country with the right circumstances for him to very rightly rise to the top. It is certain that a man of his fibre would be to "weak" to make it in the brutish environment Nigeria currently offers. Needless to say, he is at the top in one of the most successful companies to grace the Earth; the area he was involved in (Formula 1) is so advanced, that it hooks into national defense, space, aeronautical, automobile and other cutting edge technologies.

If the FG can get it right, there will be no end to citizens willing to sacrifice their all, both for the country and for their comrades. Development is not mechanical, it is more a societal / community thing,  more to do with cooperation to build to higher heights. If citizens gain a feeling of belonging and are respected, they will push for their collective benefit and drive development.

We can change things if we try, positive ways forward (without the corrupt FG) need to be identified. We too can get there.

Its not miniscule; it the fastest metrics to measuring and documenting growth and development.
While generation of jobs/taxes are a solid measure of economic wellbeing that can't be washed away, they are in no way a measure of development. For instance, a country might generate stupendous wealth from minerals, but remain undeveloped (e.g. Gabon).

These are unemployment rate figures for various countries, in various states of development:
[li]Thailand - 1.40%[/li]
[li]Cuba - 1.60%[/li]
[li]Russia - 6.40%[/li]
[li]United States - 7.20[/li]
[li]South Africa - 22.90%[/li]
In no way are, Thailand, Cuba, Russia more developed than the US. Also, South Africa is much more developed than Cuba.

I don't believe anyone can genuinely compare C# and Java. Why?
Java is verbose, cranky, cobwebbed, ugly, slow, stuck in the last century. . . Some years ago, all banking software was done in Java; today? Its all C#.

Next thing, people will start arguing the benefits of pearl and PHP over C#. Abeg, carry go! grin

@javarules I know you love your Java and you think the programmer makes all the difference, but it isn't necessarily so. Take for example, the number of primitive types supported by both languages (which would you prefer for real-time enterprise work?), also compare the IDE's, debugging possibilities etc. Sure, the programmer matters, but you can make a difference by giving him a bulldozer instead of a hoe I know thats a bit low sha smiley.
Programming › Re: Working On Creating A Test Database. Anyone With Sample Data For Free by Beaf: 3:02am On Nov 07, 2009
You can get formatted, random data with very little effort.
All you have to do is generate random text and numbers for each field, to your target formats and lengths. Then you generate the sql using loops; alternatively, you could add rows to a datatable/dataset while you loop (that way, you can dump xml as well as test-run before db population).
You can be done in an hour.

what form of development do u speak of ? its about much more but an essential part of economic development is about creating jobs/generating taxes for the government.
It encompasses all definitions of development. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Developed_country (the real deal). How, when and what can we do to measure up?

Creating jobs/generating taxes is a miniscule portion of development. It is more about completeness; the condition of the national psyche for one, how we approach and tackle issues, investment in intellectual knowledge as a resource etc.

Pentagon wants insect-like nano-drones

The U.S. agency responsible for future weapons technology, DARPA, has ordered the creation of an insect-sized flying machine capable of carrying out surveillance. The news was revealed by the project contractor, AeroVironment, in a press-release.

Top generals hope it will lead to a so-called Nano Air Vehicle. The flying machine is to be only 7cm long, weighing just 10g. The device will mimic an ordinary insect.

The James Bond like scheme has already cost the U.S. military more then $2.3 million.

The hand-launched device will be used for security, surveillance, reconnaissance and other indoor and outdoor missions.

The Californian firm is to create a working prototype in half a year.
