It is not clear if Nnamdi Kanu is drumming for another second Nigeria/Biafra civil war. Nnamdi Kanu in his last three broadcast have consistently said that Biafra is just few months to be actualized. " I want to assure you that Biafra is just a few months away" Kanu said on Wednesday in his usual broadcast.


Ebonyi Tv understands that Nnamdi Kanu breakaway from the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), and formed IPOB in 2009 and had since enjoys limited support from some Igbos.

Mr Kanu who was based in London, UK, was arrested alongside three others on October 14, 2015 in Lagos. Justice Binta Nyako on April 25, 2017, granted him bail on health grounds and adjourned the matter to November. The army and IPOB clashed before the adjourned date.

The judge has since frowned at Mr Kanu’s disappearance and blamed his sureties for Mr Kanu jumping bail.

While the federal government proscribed IPOB and labelled it a terrorist organisation in the wake of the clash, the U.S. government, however, said it does not see IPOB as such.

The national president, Middle Belt Forum, Dr Bitrus Pogu, in this interview with ISAAC SHOBAYO, speaks on the admission of the Biafra and the Yoruba nations by the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) as its members and the controversies trailing the recognition, especially in the northern part of the country.

WHAT is the position of the Middle Belt on the recognition given to the Yoruba and Biafra people by UNPO?

The Middle Belt is still consulting, but we are with the Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo and PANDEF. We will discuss further and this is a struggle that we believe in. We are still studying the situation. These groups are better organised than us. Afenifere and Ohanaeze are better organised. The reason is simply that they are more of monolithic group, while our is a heterogeneous group with nearly 200 nationalities.

The recognition is currently generating controversies, especially in the northern part of the country. What do you make of that?

It is a good development that they have been admitted as UNPO members. If this contraption called Nigeria is not working, why should we continue to pretend that all is well? We have a lot of nationalists among the Yoruba nation likewise in the Middle Belt and the Eastern part of this country. But some people continue to create problems for other groups in the country. Why do we have Boko Haram and Almajiri in the North? They are a nuisance. If some people don’t want to progress, they should not stop others who want to progress or are progressives. All of us subscribe to one Nigeria, but that one Nigeria should be renegotiated. Let us have true federalism so that we can stay together. If some people are tired of being lumped in a group that is making progress impossible, such people should be allowed to go. A common electoral system some people don’t want it to work because they want to continue to manipulate the system to have their way. Why shouldn’t people revolt? What they are doing can be resolved in one way, that is we all embrace true federalism. If we do this, there will be no IPOB, Biafra or Oduduwa Republic.

But the belief in some quarters is that the recognition by UNPO is not legitimate and also not recognised by the constitution…(cuts in)

The issue of legitimacy or not is subject to interpretation. I am not a legal person to interpret whether it is legitimate or not but one thing I know is that our constitution allows freedom to associate. And if they feel that is the way of protest, it is okay. But all we are saying is that let this country work through federalism. It may not come at once, but let us take it gradually and start moving. Let each federating unit develop its resources so that each can survive on its own. Let us give a time frame within which this can be achieved. It might be five years or ten years maximum. I can assure you that all these agitations will go.

Is such recognition healthy for the country at the moment?

Those who created the problems we are battling in the country should determine whether it is healthy or not. You don’t cage people and use intimidation and blackmail to keep them in line. That is not how things are supposed to work. The National Assembly should look at this development with all seriousness and ask: why did we come this far? The simple answer is let us go through federalism, let things work, let the electoral system work so that INEC will not just be doing whatever it likes. Let us go electronic. Why wouldn’t the president sign the amended Electoral Act? If things are working rightly in this country, this would not happen. Let us look at the problem, the whole problem, the root cause of the problem rather than proffering solutions to the symptoms.

Are you saying all these can be achieved through restructuring?

This is what we have been clamoring for. We need to restructure and if we restructure, all these agitations will disappear.


It is like there is a misconception about this restructuring. In what way are you looking at it?

Every section of this country knows what they need. Those of us in the Middle Belt have been struggling right from the Independence under a yoke which has become burdensome. We want states for our people. Look at Nasarawa, since it was created some people outside the state determine who becomes the governor and the indigenes hardly move to the seat and this is happening all over the place. People are coming in and killing others at will and no arrest is made. When you cry, nobody listens to you. People like us in the North want more states where our people can express themselves and live peacefully. Secondly, we want state police where our people can protect themselves appropriately. Even this resource control, there is nothing bad about it. All the federating units in this country are viable; they have adequate mineral resources that they can fall back on. If we can follow this, Nigeria will be better for it.

But because the centre is so lucrative, they would do anything possible to install their own. That is not good and healthy for this country. Each section of this country has its interests, I just mentioned two, there are so many others. Every state has potential. Those that are interested in controlling their oil let them have it. I want to say that oil is not the most lucrative resource in the world. In this country, we have to explore human resources and technology. So, each unit simply contributes to the centre, those things that need to remain at the centre for our common good will remain. If we embrace restructuring and move to federalism, all these agitations by Igbo, Yoruba and others will stop.

But the feeling is that federal character to some extent has not taken care of some of these agitations.

Everybody at the top wants to do whatever they want to do and they will do it without being questioned because our president is the most powerful president in the world. When you said every state must produce a minister each, does that reflect a federal character, especially when every other appointment is going to one section now? This is the time to reflect and take action that would allay our fears. The recognition of the Yoruba nation or the people of the South West by the UNPO is a welcome development.

On Thursday, May 14, The Federal High Court in Asaba awarded the sum of 10 Million Naira against Nigeria’s secret police, SSS, for illegally detaining Anthony Okolie for 10 weeks over Hanan Buhari’s abandoned SIM card.

The Street Journal had earlier reported that Okolie, who was arrested for purchasing and using a sim card earlier used by Hanan, President Buhari’s daughter, took the agency and MTN Nigeria to court over the violation of his fundamental human rights.

National President of Revolutionary Lawyer’s Forum, Mr Tope Akinyode, who instituted the case on behalf of the applicant, stated that the lawsuit was filed to serve as exemplary caution against flagrant abuse of power by law enforcement agencies and to sound a note of warning on public officers to ensure their relations do not abuse power arbitrarily.

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) on Wednesday dissociated the Ijaws from the agitation for Oduduwa Republic and urged those behind the moves to steer clear of Ijaw lands and territories in their quest.

Kennedy Olorogun, Chairman, IYC Transition implementation Committee spoke to newsmen in Yenagoa following reports credited to Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a chieftain of Afenifere associating the Ijaws with Oduduwa Republic.

Adebanjo had in media reports credited to him included Ijaw territories as part of proposed Oduduwa Republic as indigenous People group for United Nations recognition.

Olorogun noted that the Ijaws were a distinct ethnic nationality and do not to be subsumed or used to agitate for relevance and advised those behind the plot to have a rethink.

“Ordinarily we have nothing against people fighting for self determination because it is in tune with our aspiration as a people.

“However, we note that in a recent presentation to be part of indigenous people organisation of the United Nations, the promoters of the Oduduwa movement included Ijaw lands and territories in the present Edo and Delta States as part and parcel of the Oduduwa Republic.

“We wish to state clearly that though we are not against the aspiration of the Oduduwa movement self determination movement, however, Ijaw lands and territories should be left out of the composition of the Oduduwa areas.

“The Ijaw people are indigenous and distinct people in Nigeria and Africa and not part and parcel of any other ethnic nationality in Nigeria.

“The Ijaw territories of Egbema, Okomu, Gbarai, Olodiama and Furopagha in Edo State and Gbaramatu, Ogbe-Ijoh, Isaba, Egbema and Diebiri in the Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State which were included as part of the Oduduwa Republic are not Yoruba lands but owned by Ijaw people.

“We call on the promoters of the Oduduwa Republic to henceforth not include those areas as part of their Republic. We are not part and parcel of their Republic and do not wish to be part of it.

“We also call on the Indigenous people organisation of the United Nations to take note,” Olorogun said.

Former diplomat, Dapo Fafowora, has made damning comments circulating on the social media of most universities'groups about President Muhammadu Buhari officially-named Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari.

79 years old Fafowora was Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations from 1981 to 1984.

We were looking for strong delegates to the UN General Assembly and I considered him the kind of delegates we were looking for.

“So I invited him as one of our delegates to the UN General Assembly. He was at the UN in New York with me. I gave him and his wife my city apartment which I was not using free for 3 months plus a car. I liked him and I was not seeking any favours from him.

“After 3 months he returned home and sent me a note thanking me for giving him the first opportunity to visit the UN as a delegate and giving him his first experience at multilateral diplomacy.

“However, he sent President Shagari a secret and private note that while he was at the UN he observed that I had not been attending the meeting of Islamic states at the UN. President Shagari sent the note to Prof Audu who forwarded it to me in New York. He didn’t even ask me for any comments on Gambari’s secret memo as Prof Audu fully understood that Nigeria had traditionally not been attending meetings of the Islamic states as we were not then a member of the Group.

“Gambari asked for a private meeting with President Shagari which Prof Audu advised against. I was shocked that someone I had helped so much turned round to betray me so blatantly. I did not tell him I knew about the secret letter he had sent to the UN. When Shagari was overthrown by Buhari, Gambari became Foreign Minister. When career ambassadors were being suddenly retired I was at first not on the list.

“But Gambari, now FM and Rafindadi, the head of the NSO who had worked under me in London, and was now head of the NSO worked together to secure my retirement. In fact, when I called him from New York to confirm from him news about my retirement he first denied it.
Thereafter, he no longer took my calls.

“In fact, I remained at my post in New York for another 3 months during which the MFA tried to reverse the decision to retire me. I had done absolutely nothing wrong in my entire career in the diplomatic service and only got into trouble for helping a young academic who turned against me to fulfil his own personal ambition.

“Since then, he and I have only met twice in very difficult circumstances. First at a dinner by a mutual friend in New York several years after my retirement. He could barely look directly at me. He was clearly embarrassed.

“Then when Buhari won the elections in 2015 I headed a team that was set up to prepare a paper for him on our Foreign Policy. Subsequently, Alhaji Joda asked him to join the team.

“Last year, he suddenly called me to ask if I would kindly represent him at a public lecture he had agreed to chair. I told him I could not snd that he should look for someone younger. He immediately hung up on me.

“Now, he may be the kind of person Buhari is looking for to succeed Abba Kyari as COS. They are very much alike but Gambari is more subtle and even more dangerous and will substitute the national interests for his own personal interests. I have no doubt about that.

“What I have written in this long piece is just some of my personal experience and encounter with him. Everything I have written here is in my memoirs ‘Lest I Forget’ which he has seen and read. It is nothing new.

“But I think it important that the character of our top govt officials should be revealed and not covered up. We have, as a nation, paid dearly for supporting appointments to high office that are often detrimental to our nation. Enough is enough and this has to stop.”

Their constitutional rights in Lagos is loyalty and appreciation for what Tinubu has done to support their growth in Lagos. Ibo was an underdog in Lagos prior to 1999, they had zero voice. Tinubu gave them voice. They owe him loyalty and honor, thats their only right as far Lagos is concerned. He shouldnt even ask them to vote for APC, they should be the ones declaring voluntarily for APC.
