Car Talk › Re: Advice On Volvo S60 by bigjay01(m): 9:23pm On Sep 08, 2012 |
Trac: Anything lower than 2004 in the model generation isn't reliable. If you aren't much into cars, avoid the high pressure turbo model (especially if you are in Nigeria). Basically, avoid the turbo models. Above all, if you have no need for AWD, overlook it. It has it's own issues and things kind of gets complicated when something goes wrong. It's a very picky car. Find a mechanic that understands and has experience with Volvo's. It's not as complicated as the bigger "dawgs" but it isn't really as forgiving when remedial service is required; that means your whole day is ruined. A savvy mechanics that has a broad experience with European cars can perform service on it.
There is a bit of caution -- and it cannot and shouldn't be overlooked.
* If the vehicle in question will be driven to Nigeria, exercise the extra effort and purchase the Volvo plugs for that engine. As far as I know, they can only be gotten from the Volvo dealer. They are platinum and they go for a year (15,000) before replacement. The vehicle will only use this of plugs. Anything else will create problems and you will never trace it to the plugs as the root. You'll only be fixing symptoms and be repetitive till you get it right (by using the proper specified plugs). It is $15 for a pack (5 plugs).
* Timing belt service: a service tag on the external cover of the timing shield should indicate when it was last serviced. If this isn't there and the seller cannot prove maintenance, this is the first thing you should do after purchase. It is of extreme priority. The tensioner is mechanical and it also has to be replaced with the belt, thus making the service expensive. Failure to replace the tensioner is investment for a new engine 10,000 miles later and this is guaranteed and there is no way around it. So, specify when the service is to be done that the timing belt and the tensioner should be replaced. It has to be done every 70,000 miles and the vehicle is strict about the 70,000 mile range.
* Oil - it will only use Xw-30 or Xw-40. Xw-50 is recommended when towing and should be drained when done hauling or when revving at 4500rpm and above for an extended period of time. This is from the owners manual.
* Transmission fluid: it uses the Aisin Warner fluid. So far, as I know, only Volvo can do the servicing on this transmission for they have the equipment to do this. However, you can drain and fill. Transmission is bullet proof but you cannot omit maintenance on it. Anything besides Aisin is embracing the transmission goodbye.
In summary, the least problem free is the non-AWD non-turbo models/2004-up of the model generation. If it is to be driven on Nigerian roads, forget the turbo models. They require at least 91 Octane fuel. Before the purchase of the vehicle, get a qualified mechanic and stock some parts. Timing and tensioner cannot be overlooked. It is also safe to say that you will need a mechanic that is versed in suspensions.
All the best in your purchase. Hi Trac, been trying to connect you. Wanted to send an email asking you a couple of auto questions |

I am from Enugu where Fr. Mbaka practices. It is unfortunate that some men of God(?) use the pulpit to assault the psyche of their followers. Instances of notions attributed to the Rev. Father include that;
1. He told his followers that government agents were sent to kill them with poisonous gas. This caused stampede at the adoration ground and several people died.
2. Followers were told that copies of his music records could prevent injury/death in an accident (My nieces position)
3. His aqua rafa bottled water could neutralize the efficacy of poison This is your opinion. I'd be careful if I were you. In my opinion, this Rev Father Ejike Mbaka is from God. I very strongly believes ee speaks with the authority of the holy spirit, so why should he not say the truth? |

Highlander: Fellow Nairalanders,
My apologies for being away for a long time. I have been very busy, and I guess the long reign of the bears did not help matters.
I have been thinking (especially in view of the current market-bashing) that it is high time one looked beyond the stock market into other business ventures within Nigeria and abroad. The NSE, no doubt, is still a gold mine, but I daresay one should not put all his/her eggs in one basket.
I have been toying with the idea of a collaboration between Nigerians in Nigeria and abroad for sometime now. I have come up with a couple of ideas, ranging from real estate, entertainment, engineering and IT, and would be glad if a few willing people can team up with me to form a small consortium. The ideas, by the way, are still at their embryonic stages, and would need to be developed along with other ideas fellow collaborators may have.
I am therefore calling on Nairalanders who may have been thinking along the same line to indicate interest so that we can work out the modalities to us start something. I believe it is worth a trial. Of course, there are lots of challenges, including the fact that this could be a scam, but I also believe that these could be handled.
Please indicate interest by sending a mail to: oh boy as u display your email addy like this, na inviatation to spam be that oooo |

My take on Transcorp(se) is that it is a risky investment and remains so until , However Transcorp may represent the only opportunity for the commmon investor to get into the Telecoms sector.
One thing for sure is this - the day the deal with any major investor gets to the ordinary investor the price would be out of reach. I have dedicated a portion of my investments reserved for such risky business to Transcorp. If I wake up tomorrow and there is no Transcorp then so be it.
the time to get Transcorp is when nobody wants it. (As Oga Wanaj0 would say - only if it fits your risk appetite)
Disclosure - I am loaded on Trascorp. |

NSE 101
Summary
1. Dont be greedy 2. Always set an exit point regardless (especially for a not so solid company)
Bought close to 1m of Livestock feeds on the 19th of Feb at 7.02, (for a quick Hit 'n Run) watched gained steadily upto 9.98, which translated to more than 305 after charges. Greed got the better of me, I didnt sell, only to see it nosedive to 7.78.
Lucky enough it rebounded, I ddint need any rocket scientist to tell me to parachute of it today @ 9.10. You know where it closed 2day.
Are UNIC @ 4.80 / DUNLOP @ N5.55 good prices? looks like the support for UNIC is about N5, Anyway got a good chunk of those |

wanaj0: I really don't know again.
IAA did placement @ 2.10 or so for N2.00. which comes to like N0.525 per 50k share. That is already fully allotted. I however learnt that one of the parties to the offer is pushing for supplementary allottment (collected money from people so need to get stocks for them) but IAA is not playing ball because of the potential delay in listing/planned PO.
Now the company I talked about is 'buying' IAA for its client @ N1.20 for 50k for share!!! That is the one that I think is available.
