PhonesRe: Android, Anyone? by bigrovar(m): 9:33am On Jan 02, 2012
since the announcement of Ice cream sandwich I had been looking forward to running it on my galaxy tab 8.9. even though honeycomb is a decent experience for tablet (at least compared to gingerbread) still it looked and felt like a rushed job. A rushed  stop gap measure to having something to compete with the ipad. even though I was using a custom honeycomb rom, the feel of the os on my tab lacked grace especially in transitions.

Then a group of XDA hackers put together an alpha build of ICS for the 8.9 galaxy tab which I prompted loaded on my tab. Boy talk about how software can breath new life to hardware. even though ICS bears visual resemblance with honeycomb. The difference in performance is like night and day.

Speed
first of ICS is screaming fast!! everything is fast and snappy, so much so that I thought the software added extra cores to my tablets.
smooth
Transitions and animations are smooth like as liquid,  transitions flies in and out, pop ups and modal dialog box all show with grace.  scrolling between home screens and screen rotation are smooth with zero lags.

The whole experience is with zero lags.

I also love the swipe to close functionality added to the list recent app too, and also the ability to swipe away notification. In all I have been hugely impressed with the alpha build of ics so much so I using it daily. I tested a brandnew galaxy tab 8.9 recently and compared to the ics on my tap, the former felt like vomit. The most interesting part is the the build I am running is still not optimized for the tab and lacks many important things like an ics kernel (am using a custom kernel originally meant for honeycomb) and also lacks hardware accelerated drivers. the tegra2 drivers for ics has not yet been released. also the build lacks support for a camera and 3G. Yet such is the awesomeness of the experience that I am ready to forego these short comings.

One other thing I love about ics is the low memory footprint. while with honeycomb my tablet averaged at 400mb from a fresh boot. on ics I get like 250mb even with 4 applications running.
I have little doubt now that this year would indeed be the year of android tablet.

Now for the mandatory screenshots

dont allow them to stress you. It is known that many people with complex problems love nothing more than to puke fun at others.
i asked do 1 pay for the rooting
and no you don't have to pay for rooting at all. The procedure is not hard at all. the hardest part is understanding the concept and what all the jargons means (Clock Work Mod, Recovery mode, superuser etc) once u have a grip of what this things means (usually in a couple of hours) then you are good to go. However u most remember that you can use your android phone without ever rooting the device. rooting is good for doing very advanced stuffs which many average users would never be bothered about. Hence rooting is not an absolute essential requirement for android. having said that the procedure for rooting varies from one device to the other. The first step is to decide which android device you want to get and then find out how to root the particular device.

Pls how much is the galaxy sold brand new pls guys

even though am quite impressed by the work being done on kde's plasma touch. I still feel for now kde and desktop linux lacks the ecosystem to sustain being used on a touch only interface. It makes it useless having 2 tables a smart phone and a laptop smiley
ComputersRe: Ipad Or Galaxy by bigrovar(m): 7:54am On Jan 02, 2012
Its all about personal choice and what u want from your tablet. Out of the box the ipad provide a better experience. Its generally smoother and (some will say easier to use) however the galaxy tab 10.1 provide more customization options for the user. a power user would be more at home with the galaxy tab however because android generally has more options for the advanced user. for example I can always install apps which allows me to connect to my home network windows shares / or ftp server etc I also love the multiple home screens and the ability add useful widgets to my home screen and customize my galaxy tab in such a way that its different from others. However its all a matter of choice. You really have to ask your self what you expect from a tablet.

The galaxy tab 10.1 is generally superior to the ipad hardware wise. It has a better front and back facing camera 0.7 MP against 3MP (back) and 2MP (Front), the galaxy tab is also lighter than the ipad2 607G against 565G. resolution wise the galaxy tab also wins with a 149 pixel density against the ipad2 which has 132 (this means pictures is much sharper and vibrant on the galaxy tab.
however like a said the ipad makes up with a better software experience. although I am currently running an alpha build of the latest android called ice cream sandwich which puts the galaxy tab on the same performance level of the ipad. so I have no doubt that the software experience of the galaxy tab 10.1 would improve with updates.

Hypocrisy is also quoting religion to condemn one intimate sin (homosexuality),   while ignoring other intimate sins (adultery and prostitution).  As far as I am concerned,  those using religion as a justification to make homosexuality illegal,  while NEVER EVER suggesting criminalizing adultery,  are just as big a hypocrite as those who favor homosexuality while not permitting bigamy.

And yes,  I also wouldn't mind seeing polygamy made legal in western countries,  but fairness would require that women be allowed more than one husband in addition to the usual one man with multiple wives.
lacidi:
First, the Quran does not forbid polygamy. Secondly, the jury is still out whether the Bible forbids polygamy, but I don’t wanna go into that now because that’s not what this thread is about.
There are lots of things the bible and the Quran forbids perhaps we should also make the eating of pigs and other *unclean* animals a crime. we can start by adultery and fornication, make that like 5 years in prison.

The Law passed by the senate makes same sex marriage illegal i.e. it says you cannot marry a person of same sex with you
. Nope its goes further than that, it makes it a crime. you know its actually weird because Nigerian from time immemorial has never recognized gay marriage. the definition of marriage in Nigeria has always been a union of man and woman to the exclusion of others. so a woman can on marry and woman in Nigeria, What this law does is to say anyone who even attempt or tries to organize something tagged a gay marriage is liable to 14 years in prison. It doesn't make sense if you ask me. But the part of the law which most disturbing is where it makes it a crime for a man to show affection to another man (or something like that) need to see the provision of the bill (which I can't find anywhere online)

No one has said you cannot sleep with a fellow man inside your bedroom. What we are saying is that you cannot come to the registry or the church to wed.
eh the criminal code makes that a crime
section 217 states
Any male person who, whether in public or private, commits any act of gross indecency with another male person, or procures another male person to commit any act of gross indecency with him, or attempts to procure the commission of any such act by any male person with himself or with another male person, whether in public or private, is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for three years.
Foreign AffairsRe: Obama Puts Same-sex Rights At The Centre Of US Foreign Policy by bigrovar(m): 2:25pm On Dec 07, 2011
Many of you here are nothing but Hippocrates. A sin is a sin is a sin, its only in the eyes of man that we grade sin based on our moral standing. Thankfully God does not see things the way we do. Many here calling Obama a traitor for supporting Gay right have (of have had) sex out side of marriage, and even those who haven't don't have a problem with anyone who does. I am quite indifferent to a person's sexual preference ut I can't stand inconsistency. . If we are going to kick against and look down  and throw  gay people to jail (and even try to harm or kill them) then we should apply the same rule to everyone who has committed a sexual sin in the eyes of the God you worship. A man sleeping with a man is just as bad as two unmarried people having sex (whether they be man and woman or otherwise makes no matter). or a man having sex with his hands or stimulating his sexual organs

The law should generally  not be concerned with the private lives or decisions of a person. what I do in my house under my roof is no ones business as long as it does not affect my neighbor. Morality and crime should never be the same in any society. But more importantly there should be consistency in our laws. A country where its *ok* for a 53 year old man to marry a 12 year old girl should not be the one making it a crime to gay or for two consenting adult to marry. Its one thing to refuse to recognize gay marriage, its quite another to make it a crime. If gay marriage is a crime then adultery and fornication should also be declared a crime am sure my Christian and Muslim brothers won't have a problem with that.

While I don't always agree with Obama on many issues. I think it is noble for him to help fight the injustice and violence melted out against a person because of who he decides to sleep with. heck many of u hypocrites here who condemn gays have had sex with your self ( masturbation) before, I bet a huge number still do, yet you come here to form holier than thou.

Again I am quite indifference to who a man decides to wed and sleep with and marry (some people marry their dog, some they marry the bottle, some money) what hikes me is all the hypocrisy going around because of this issue.  people casting stones even though they are just as guilty.

PhonesRe: Amazon's Kindle Fire Tablet: Ipad And Galaxy Tab's Possible Rival by bigrovar(m): 8:39pm On Oct 03, 2011
The Kindle fire is not just about price any more than the Ipad is about hardware. The reason why I believe the Kindle Fire would be the tablet which could over take the ipad as the kind of tablets (at least in the US) is Amazon.

What makes the ipad great and better than any other android tablet out there is not just the hardware, its the ecosystem, the tight integration with apple contents like music, videos, apps etc. Google although there are trying hard to build similar ecosystem with their google music, and google books still have a long way to go and have only succeeded in one are which is apps (even though the number of tablet focussed android apps is nothing compared to what is available on the ipad.

This is where amazon comes in. The took a base on android (possibly gingerbread) and built their own custom UI and integrated it with their own services.  And guess what Amazon is one company which rivals if not surpasses apple when it comes to a content ecosystem. The Kindle store for ebooks is the gold standard for buying ebooks I apple has nothing that is even close to that and if the success of the kindle and nook is anything to go by the ebook market is quite huge!, Amazon also has a big music store. Amazon music comes toe to toe with itunes (even though the latter has the brand recognition) Then there is the amazon video streaming service, the amazon app store (which is unique because it adopts the closed nature of itunes and apps would have to be approved before they are allowed into the store, this creates the placebo effect in people's mind that whatever app is used has passed through security checks. Also I see most apps might be required to be compatible with the kindle fire before allowed into the store in other to reduce the general fragmentation which affects android)

What amazon as done is take andriod and the open OS and put it behind their own walled garden. They also created a created a custom unique software which simplifies android for the average users and then a hardware which their software hooks into seamlessly. And talk about seamless, Amazon is huge in the US, its the number one online retailer when it comes to books (electronic and paper) consumer electronic, music, name it. They already have the brand recognition, the customer base, and the Kindle fire harnesses all of this by providing an easy seamless way to access all this services and more

already amazon has struck deals with major magazines   Bon Appetit, Elle,  Oprah.Vanity Fair, Wired, and GQ in the US all of which are on board, and users also have access to over 100,000 Movies and TV add that to millions of ebooks. then add the fact that this device would be selling for $199 about 30,000 naira.  dude this thing would be flying out of shelves

Then not to mention the free cloud storage service which allows you store your files in the cloud.

It doesn't come with a mic = big deal
nor a camera = seriously anyone going over this already has a phone with at least 5mp camera.
it doesn't come with bluetooth = who cares not a deal breaker

what you get is a very fast consumption device, a fast browser, a gateway to millions of books and other content devices,

the application space is a bit tricky, but most normal users really don't use all that app. most pretty much are happy with what come with their device and if that is not enough there have access to 10,000 apps (which would grow drastically once this device becomes king of the hill which it will)

for the 3% power users like me out there, the device would always be rooted and it would be possible to install just about any software or any mod of android on it. It would even be possible to install the missing google services. The average users won't care though.

I think Amazon has a winner here. And frankly I am considering getting one

To be sincere with you Kubuntu is incomparable to Ubuntu. I have tried it in the past and the KDE usually crash, for that simple reason I switched to Ubuntu.
I don't quite get this. I have met many people on identica and irc who have claimed to hate kde because it crashed on them? 99% if the time when I drill them to find out what really happens it always turned out that there tried installing kubuntu-desktop on an ubuntu installation. I also tell people its not recommended. Bad things can happen because both ubuntu and kde use very different underlining technologies and libraries many of which don't work well when mixed.

In any case when you say "crash" what do you mean? like the whole kde workspace( including the window manager Kwin, plasma - desktop shell,) crashed on you? or is it just some application you tried to open that crashed on you. I have been using and installing kde for close to 2 years now and I have never experienced a situ where its completely usable. In any case when applications crash on kde its does so gracefully posting a dialog box telling you about the crash and offering to restart the application or sending an error report. Many who come here and talk really don't know half of what their are on about. I mean kde is not for everyone. Its meant for power users. If you are someone who just want a system that works with "sane" defaults and don't need to configure your desktop experience then kde is an overkill. If however you love to have control and power for you desktop then kde is the way to go. gnome 2, unity or gnome 3 non of this have a hold on kde when it comes to the power it gives the user.

What Yahoo messaging clients with cam and voice can work in Ubuntu ?
yahoo IM is based on a proprietary IM protocol and the company has refused to release a client for linux. For the most part that you can get it to work with pidgin and telepathy shows the briliance of the reverse engineering skills of open source developers. Other areas like how it implements voice and webcam are blackbox. still some clients try to get it to work but even then their support is flaky at most. You might wanna try kopete (kde IM messenger) which has some patchy video support with yahoo. you would have to install the libjasper runtime libraries for it to work though.

This is why I rarely use yahoo, if you have anyone u wana chat with. if they have a computer they can install skype. skype video and audio works like a charm on linux. same thing with gtalk

In Ubuntu Natty there is 2gigabytes of cloud space granted.
Ubuntu one uses a proprietary cloud storage format same as dropbox and the rest. what owncloud hopes to achieve is a completely free and open source cloud backend. It also brings in much more features built in than what is currently offered and hopes to achieve all this using open protocals and formats. No vendor lock in.

Most of what you are upgrading in Kubuntu are already old news in Natty.
Beside the network manager, the features that come out of the box with kde4 can not even be compared to the limited experience offered by gnome2,3 or even unity. I have used gnome unity and gnome 3 and even xfce and so I can tell u that non of them come close to the out of the box feature u get with kde. Sure it can be overwhelming at first to the new user. But once u get a hang of things, you cant go back

Been a while since I have been to this path, I see that things have quieten down a little. Maybe I should just use this to fire up the thread a little with recent happening in the K side of the free desktop sphare. So kde 4.7 was released a while back bringing in number of subtle improvements here and there. Nothing major, Just smoothening the UI making things more stable and fast. I did an upgrade recently from kubuntu 11.04 using the backport PPA (not officially supported) So loving the new Kde 4.7, nothing really major just minor refinement here and there. One thing I love though is the porting of kdepim suits to akonadi, This means kmail, kaddressbook and korganiser are now using the revolutionary akonadi backend.

One of the thing I love about kdepim2 is how its now easy to add my google calendar to my korganiser, and my google contacts to kaddressbook. in fact I have a perfect zen btw my galaxy S2 and my desktop when it comes to calendar management and contacts. The icing on the cake is push email support for kmail which is a feature that has been one of the most requested for. completely makes kmail feature complete and the best mail client in the Linux land.

when it comes to task management I have my tasks synced with remember the milk both on the android (using astrid) and on my desktop using the RTM plasmoid this allows me to have my task synced up (who kde is really productive ).
even the plasma network manager got some love in improved mobile phone support, connecting my android device to my laptop is now a matter of plug and play (something that was abit flaky on older plasma network managers) this puts the kde network manager on per with what its gnome counterpart has to offer.

Here are some exciting stuffs to expect in coming months
I look forward to owncloud which would bring allow me sync stuffs like bookmarks, notes, music and files with a free cloud software its would be the open source dropbox on steroids. There is even work to bring facebook contacts and event notification ported to kdepim (for the facebookies) and work is being done on integration knotes with evernotes. Currently Kde is the most productive Desktop Environment in the world (IMHO and from my experience) the future can only get better. I definitely backed the right horse smiley

Now for the mandatory screenshots :p

hi guys, just got me an sgs2, any advice on how to get paid apps for free, am new to android, coming from bb
if u can afford a sgs2, then u can afford to pay for your favourite app. This apps are not expensive. most close 150 - 200 naira and in many cases same app have free version which comes with ads. I have been using android for quite a while now and I have just had to buy 2 apps the rest of my app are free. If u like a paid app, try supporting the developer and pay for it.

decided to change my default look for the month of June (Just changed the plasma theme and wallpaper) And before someone say KDE looks like windows 7, remember that kde 4 project started in 2006 and first release was in 2007. so its actually the other way round. Anyway I have tried Gnome 3 and all I can say is its definitely not my cup of tea. I have no doubt that things would improve eventually and it would be more stable, But the whole idea and approach is just not something I am used to. I hope to try Unity some day though I doubt I would have a different opinion.

what u think of desire hd?? better than the iphone 4??
The desire HD is a very good phone. Its more or less the Global version of the Evo 4G but with an update CPU. The main thing I have noticed about the device is that it is essentially the same hardware has the recently released desire S and even the HTC Thunderbolt and Sensation (I am not really sure about the last one though) when I mean same hardware I mean ram size, CPU and GPU (700 + mb ram, 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon and Adreno 205 GPU), . all HTC is doing is just re-branding the Desire HD and differentiating through software (The recent devices come with HTC Sense 3) But IMHO the most important thing is the hardware software can always be upgraded officially or unofficially. You can always install cyanogenMod 7 with gingerbread or even install Leedroid (which is rumoured to be the best rom for DHD) In all the desire HD is a very good choice for a phone.

i have 2 major issues with kde4.x, one has to do with my hardware - nothing as sweet as bigrovars, i use a netbook and i sometimes find response a bit slow. the other is the plasma(?) toolbar; changing the color is not as simple as it was in kde3.x; why do i have to make an svgz file and modify and , why not at least include an optional feature which can help me automate it so all i have to do is select my color and it just changes?
Yeah I missed that feature too, and we are not alone. I am sure with time the feature would be restored.

one has to do with my hardware - nothing as sweet as bigrovars, i use a netbook and i sometimes find response a bit slow. the other is the plasma(?)
Yeah KDE is not known to be a light DE, its quite expensive on memory and cpu actually. One way u can reduce the memory and cpu demand is to disable strigi indexing. It is one of the biggest issue currently accepting kde atm. For a netbook I would recommend something based on xfce or better still lxde

bigbrovar what screenshot; looks familiar; is that chakra linux?
Its actually Kubuntu smiley

@4llerbuntu you really don't have to beat yourself about it bro, just use what works for u and makes u productive, both kde and gnome have their use cases and fans. One thing about kubuntu is that it is mostly raw kde and does not receive as much polish as Ubuntu did to gnome (or unity) Its pretty Spartan and upstream kde. But the users is allowed to make the desktop the way there want. that process however is what many gnome users struggle with. I was a gnome user for close to 2 years during which I tried using kde for couple of times each time going back to gnome. In the end (around 2009) I decided to try and gain and have since been hooked. But again just use what works for u smiley

nah, dts KDE (kubuntu)

and its a whole learning curve on its own, before u get ideas, bigbrovar is a power user and has been using it for years, if u join him, u on your own
Your Post smell of FUD, First of all to anyone coming from windows, Linux the whole Linux world is a completely different ball game and learning curve. Also weather u go to Unity or gnome 3 or even XFCE, u still have to relearn everything u learnt from using the classic gnome desktop (which is nolonger supported if I might add) KDE is not any harder than using gnome 3 or Unity, I might even add that its even easier because I find most people coming from windows find kde easier to grasp than gnome. Hence which every desktop you use you are still going to relearn new things.

And if you decide to use kde, you are never on your own. Infact kde is the biggest free software community in the world, the biggest Desktop Environment on Linux. Its a great and very large community. There is always the kubuntuforms and the kubuntu irc very helpful places to get help and support.

Having said this. I would like to add that as with all newly released version of Ubuntu which takes time to settle down and be stable, Natty is not stable, there are still lots of issues and huge regressions. from the battery eating kernel bug affecting 2.6.38 kernel, to the massive regression with broadcom wireless cards causing many laptops with broadcom wireless chips to freeze and kernel panic, to random X crashes when u put the laptop on massive GPU load affecting systems with Intel graphic cards. etc I would not recommend it as of yet for anyone. Give it a month or 2 before u decide to upgrades. Most of this bugs are being worked on and some even have work around available.

@lynx, i found a project for meta search and indexing. dunno if its still active tho.
its called tracker. im not near my pc so i dont know if it still works or supported. will check it out l8r.
Tracker has always been a part of gnome. It is what gnome uses for search and indexing of files. It was formerly in competition with Beagle from Novel but was adopted as default for gnome due to lower memory footprint. It is also being used in maemo and the meego project.

Anyway gnomies and Ubuntu guys how is Unity doing? I have not had the time to test it out. (maybe I will one of this days) I tried gnome 3 though and I just know its not for me. feels more like something that would be great on a small screen touch device. I get the same vibe for Unity. Anyway I am just glad that KDE is in a stable and polishing stage. I am running Kubuntu 11.04 and so far its going as smooth as butter. Never have I used a desktop environment that is this seamless. Mightily powerful and configuration (Kde rocks honestly cant say that enough) I also love the fact that most of the job that goes into it comes from upstream so nothing there is Kubuntu specific. Anyway just said to drop by. I won't leave without a screenshot (or two tongue )

I'd love to buy but it doesn't accept java applications and when i say Java applications, i mean Opera mini to browse.
The N900 even though does not support java still runs the native version of the opera browser which works very well and is my default browser.

I just can't stand when people without a scintilla of military knowledge in terms of current capacity of Nigeria or other nations, or their current weapons procurement regimes, can come out shouting about 'we lack the capacity'.  Ask them to mention the names of just two weapons systems at our disposal and they'll stare you blank in the face, yet they just know we ''lack the capacity''. Compound buffoons.
It is people who really have nothing to offer in a conversation that haul insults. I do have something to offer so I will not insult you or call u names

Under the adminstration of (OBJ) the government then ask the Military Professional Resources Initiative (M.P.R.1) to perform an audit of the Nigeria's Military. It discovered that 75 percent of the army's equipment was not in operational. with 22 MIG-21 and 15 Jaguar fighter jets grounded. and only 2 of the eight C-130 Transport planes where in operation. And although the Navy had 19 Admirals it had only 9 seaworthy ships. It also found most of the infrastructure of the armed forces was in a deplorable condition.

I have read the report released by the Nigerian Army on the mission on libraria and sierra Leone maybe if u find time to read it you would know that even though we have brave men in services, the state of our combat readiness is not as good as many of us imagined. I mean things like basic lack of battle craft expedients like maps, intelligence and communication equipments. expired bullets. The NAF lacked both attack and transport / evacuation helicopters. It lacked sufficient C-130 aircraft too which would have proved invaluable to NIGCON for the purpose of medical evacuation (Medevac), re-supply and insertion of troops to critical areas. The army’s armour and artillery units on the ground also lacked sufficient rocket propelled grenades as well as adequate trailers and lifts for the movement of heavy guns and armaments to operation areas.

We are not talking about sophisticated precision surface to air missile systems. Just the basic stuff which would be needed for a campaign like this. We should remember that even Countries like the US still find it hard to go into a country and topple the government without hell breaking loose.

Again I am not saying it is impossible. if we put our mind and resources to it we can surely remove gbagbo. but it would not be easy or straight forward. it would be very messy and in the end (like the americans ask about iraq) we would wonder if the life of the average ivorian would just have been better if we had relied on sactions instead. the most we can get out of an armed intervention giving the capability of ecomog is a pyrrhic victory

@Bluetooth brought the example of Libraria and Sierra Leone. I would like to remind him that we went into Libraria when I was in Primary 4 I was entering University when the war ended. It was a bloody war which cost the lives of Thousands of Nigerians services men and millions of civilians. In the end we can not say the battle reached a conclusion we wanted because it only ended when Charles Taylor the strongest of the war lords was made president (Charles himself was forced out through diplomatic means to take asylum in Nigeria. hence it can be argued that what ecomog could not get charles out of libraria for 10 years, what a diplomatic settlement and pressure did in within a year. The fact that charles was under threat from a new rebel force is a moot point)

The situation in Sierra Leone was not much different. Fine we were able to wrestle power from the RUF within days and restore the government. But that was just the start of the story. Read about the war in Sierra leone and u would find out Ecomog most of the time were only able to hold a small part of Freetown while the rebels ruled the rest of the country chopping off limbs in the process of spreading their reign of terror. again ecomog could not wrap up operation there. it was not untill the UK sent 1000 commandos that hostilities where brought to an end.

I am not here to talk down or ridicule our armed forces. I am always proud of your boys and have no doubt as to their bravery. Its just that we have to apply reason and not feel that we can just match into ivory coast and chase out gbagbo. If we are to learn something from history. Things like that are not always that easy. even with the most equip army.

Its time for ECOMOG to act as a regional bloc and stamp out this useless cling to Power by these neaderthal leaders who have no concept of democratic progress of any sort. For the sake of a continuation of democratic principles Gbagbo needs to be unseated.

What has Gbagbo done in government to warrant his continous support. Nothing. A stagnated economy simply implementing IMF programs and borrowing money left, right and center to prop their economy up.

This squabble sets a bad precedence for the rest of West African leaders when they know they can get away with such devious acts. If I were still in the army I would have joined up to go take out that buffoon. How many troops does Ivory Coast have and how long will they survive if they don't recieve pay or weapons. Baring the notorious Russia who go give them weapon and with which money will they pay. Liberia and sierra leone at least had diamonds, wetin Ivory cost get

Its time for some whoop azz.  "Esprit de corp".
I hear comments like this alot and it makes me laugh because people just talk without even stopping to think about how realistic their proposal is.
Even if there is a will for a military intervention of Ivory Coast. Ecomog just dont have the capacity to sustain such an intervention to a reasonable conclusion. Invading a foreign country with a standing army is not a piece of cake. The best approach is a touch and go approach. Go in (within 2 weeks - a month) get the job done and be out of there. and I can assure u Ecomog just dont have the logistic, or military hardware needed for a touch and go operation how many of your troops are trained in Urban warfare? Remember that even though Gbagbo lost the Election he still had 45% of the votes, which means almost half the country is behind him and I can assure you a large part of the 45% would be ready to fight for him. The most we can get is be drawn into a long drawn out war which would last years and cause more damage and also be a drain on resources.

Sanctions do nothing. They couldn't force Saddam out, they couldn't faze Mugabe. Why do you think they'd work in Ivory Coast?
The mugabe situ is completely different because whether directly and indirectly he does have the support of SADC and AU. hence sactions from the west is unlikely to make much impact on him. The situ in Ivory Coast is different. Gbagbo has lost support of His West African Neighbours . and about Saddam, Sactions did not force him out, But it did contain him while the situation in Iraq was different from what currently obtains in Ivory Coast, the fiasco and current hellish condition of Iraq who are worse of now than they were under saddam just proves my point about the futility of armed intervention. One could argue that if the Military might of The US and Britain could not do a clean Job in Iraq. Don't expect anything different from a West African Force which much less military capability (to put it lightly).

Beside I did say that even though it was a slow process and might take time. Its still the best and most realistic way to get gbagbo out compared to military intervention.
PoliticsRe: Before Ecomog Goes Into Cote D’ivoire by bigrovar(m): 5:38pm On Jan 19, 2011
The reality of the matter is even if ecomog wants to, it just does not have the capacity to carry out a touch and go operation. Any attempt to try and forcefully remove Gbagbo would at best end in a stalemate, chances of completely routing Gbagbo's forces within the first few months of operation is completely wishful thinking. It did not happen in Liberia it didn't happen in Sierra leone. If the case of previous intervention is to be taken into account. what we would have is a long drawn out bloody expensive campaign which would cost lots of lives and propertry not to talk of creating a huge Humanitarian Disaster unprecedented in West Africa. we should remember that we are not talking about Tiny Liberia or Sierra leone we are talking about a country with an estimated population of 20mil here. In the end of the day after many would have dead and millions of dollars wasted every one would have to agree to go back to the negotiating table. The best hope for Cote D’ivoire is sanctions. The international community should target the circle from military head to key ministers so that there see that it is not in their interest to back the gbago government. This might seem long and even frustrating. But before me compared to Military intervention it is the best approach

Guys i need your help oh. I have not been able to setup a Visafone modem on Ubuntu 10.10.

It is a ZTE modem

ZTE AC8710

I have googled extensively and apparently, it supposed to work, except, it doesnt. I have usb-modeswitch installed (i think it comes with 10.10 by default).

On running usb-devices command, it displays only the mass-storage driver for this device so there is nothing to switch to (I can't paste the output right now cos i'm on windows). That gives me the impression that the driver is not installed at all and this is not a matter of switching. If someone out there has gotten this particular modem to work to any version of ubuntu or even other linux before, please let me know so that i will consider switching back to 10.04 or maybe another distro as long as it works with the modem. for now, i'm stuck to browsing on windows.

Any help will be greatly appreciated
Although network manager has really made the process of connecting to Mobile card dead easy. It does fall on its head sometimes. which is where a tool which has always worked were network manager fails comes in handy. wvdial. it always worked for me. it is commandline but very easy to use
just plug ur card and do a
sudo wvdialconf
it would configure your card and save the settings to /etc/wvdial.conf where u can there update your card settings like username and password. once done u can start the modem with sudo wvdial. and even configure it to gnome-ppp or kppp
