blackweaver: @roosebolton where did u get raspberry pi? how much does it cost? i think i won't mind trying it out.
we did a bulk order which included 50 Pies (with 4GB SDCARD) 50 hdml to vga converter cables, and 50 USB to PS2 coverters (for PS2 Keyboards and mouse) In all I would say everything was close to 150K (including the absurd 90k we had to pay as import duty.. we didn't have a choice as DHL would not release our items even after assuring them that being a non profit org and a diplomatic enclave, their hold up almost derailed the workshop. so we had to grinned our teeth like stannis and pay)

`I got a new work computer and decided to run xfce since am already running kde on my personal computer. I installed mint xfce 15 (which imho is the best xfce implementation around) after all said and done. Here is my setup .. (of cause extensive use of conky for the time and system information all made to blend with the wallpaper.)

I have to say having used kde for close to 5 years.. xfce is a refreshing change. This thing is fast and even though I changed the compositor for compton (which gives a tear free experience) and also have some non lightweight config installed. The laptop just uses 200MB on startup with rhythmbox playing.. and everything is fast. snappy and very clean. I embodies the unix philosophy of KISS (keep it simple stupid).. I do miss out lots of features from kde though.. things like nepomuk (for analytic and search function) and akonadi which allows seamless PIM integration with google calendar, mail and address book allow a 2 way sync btw my android and phone hence I won't be leaving kde anytime soon. but I hope to keep xfce around as an alternative desktop for when am off work and just need something to play around with.

NB If you are into web development (java script, php, css and database manipulation.. and won't mind working in a Linux environment and also happen to live in abuja or won't mind relocating.. give me a buzz @bigbrovar on twitter.

What I find sad in all of this is the fact that as often the case in issues involving sex in BBA the girl always take the blame. The value of double standard society applies to male and female when it comes to how morals and value is revealed in BBA and it's sad that our society (africa as a whole) still go with this mentality. It takes two to tango yet while people like Beverly, Betty (and the other Ghanaian girl) have been hounded for being b!tches and wh0res Rarely do we extended same colourful words to Nandos, Bolts or in this case Angelo. They seem to be an unwritten law that morality laws only applies to women and men are above the same. I personally don't judge what adults locked in a house for many months do in a show rated 18..i can't judge cus i have not been there neither do I know what it's like. But if I were to judge then my views would be gender blind. It goes to show how much our society still need to go in terms of gender treatment

BTW is that not the newer variant of the AK47? I believe the Nigerian police issue this to their men serving in AMISON in somalia.. wonder why the army has not transitioned to this rather than the butt ugly ak47..

It never fails to amaze me the level of ignoramus in this country who pose as critics. At least try and read.. get a book or something before making ridiculous comments online, its just sad and leaves me smh at the bleak outlook for Nigerians if our youth can descend to the level of reasoning.

First off, we all agree that the state of hardware in the Nigeria arsenal could be better. The Armed forces were not spared from the general state of decay which afflicted the country infrastructure under military rule, however the situation is no were near as bad as the daft commments in this thread tries to portray.

It should be noted that, very few (if any) of the Military hardware on display are WW2 area or where manufactured in china. The hardware on display may not be the most cutting edge.. neither can one call them obsolete as most are still in service and in use by the top countries around the world like Britain, France and Turkey.

The Panhard Sagie is robust armoured all terrain APC which is highly mobile and capable of amphibious operations. It is a veteran of the Ecomog years and is currently being used by the French mission to Mali

PoliticsRe: Fashola Releases Fantasy Video Of Lagos by bigrovar(m): 8:02am On Jun 15, 2013
Reading the thread makes one depressed. I have often said, our biggest problem is not illiteracy but huge number of unenlightened literate people we have. Anyone with half a brain would realize that this video was not meant for Nigerians or Lagosians, it was aimed at attracting foreign investors. It is called branding. South Africa does this with their Proudly South Africa Branding exercise, This is a country facing serious AIDS issues and with one of the highest rape/murder and crime rate in the world. Yet they have been able to show case the bright side of their country. The side they want to present to the world.. The best part of South Africa. India also does this with their Incredible India promo shown on CNN and other international TV stations. Incredible India won't tell u India is a home to over 400 million people living in abject poverty (That is almost more than the whole population of West and East & Central Africa put together) some in condition worse than sub Saharan African. Yet India has been able to showcase its best to the world.

Lagos is not the worst city in the world, It has huge infrastructural problems, Its a 3rd world city with many 3rd world problems. Yet Lagos is a mega city. A city with GDP bigger than Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi put together. The most cosmopolitan city in west africa. A city where you can arrive with nothing and make something big of yourself. A city full of oppotunities. It is the most industralized city of the 2nd biggest economy in Africa. It is the only Nigerian city whose major revenue is from non oil sector. Lagos is an investors paradise which has been put too much on negative light mostly by western press. There is nothing wrong in showing the world a different side to lagos. In fact its a side of lagos which needs to be sold more so that the city can change perception and in essence bring in needed investments in areas like transportation, power, etc with the hope of providing jobs for you and I. A lagos where people of different ethnicity and religious background live side by side and peace and harmony. A lagos on its way to becoming the biggest city in Africa. I look at this documentary with pride not because I am rich or I never saw the ugly side of Lagos. But because this ulgy side is what the world see and knows about Lagos. Its great that someone is trying to show another side of Lagos. Unfortunately inferiority complex is enshrined in the blood of many Nigerias

onegig: You are very wrong sire, Robb was like his father a man of honor.

Yes he was duty bound to marry one of the Frey's but he fell for the other girl whom he had relations with. He was torn between two honors. Should he dump a girl he pledged his life to or should he follow an allegiance he made.
Robb is an insult to the memory of Ned Stark, a man who rather lose his head than his honor. Catalyn was billed to marry Brandon Ned's brother. But after Brandon got killed.. Winterfel fell to Ned and he knew he had to honor the married to keep the riverland Alliance even if this cost him a chance to be with his true love Ashara Dayne noblewoman of House Dayne. Ned did what needed to be done. He always put his people first before any selfish consideration.

But i guess he choose the wrong one. It was his honor that killed him not the other way round.
Wrong, Rob had no duty or promise or allegiance to this woman he just allowed his flesh and heart have better of his duty and reason.. Freys fought and died for him in his quest to avenge his father.. all this he knew yet he still went on to marry a girl for selfish, personal reasons. In the end his life is not even the painful part. But loss of the north and winterfel is a bigger tragedy.
At least he made a recompense to the Frey's since Edmure is marrying one of the Freys. But I guess most times in the GOT nothing really plays out to logic.
TV/MoviesRe: Game Of Thrones : Red Wedding Scene by bigrovar(m): 1:16pm On Jun 04, 2013
ogugua88: Really? I always hated the way Lady Stark promised Robb to one of Frey's daughters. It was such a contrast to Sansa's begging Eddard to let her marry Joffrey and have his blonde babies and Eddard's refusal to both Sansa and Robert Baratheon.
Robb was a fool, he is not worthy of being a lord talkless of a king.. he is selfish & immature... Catalyn Stark for all her fault give him good counsel but he was carried away by youth and felt too big to listen to his mother. He give his word and was duty bound to marry the Frey girl. The whole war, the north and the river land was reliant on that marriage. The Frey would guarantee him over 5000 men including mounted knights instead he throw all that away because of a woman. His father was a different Man. Ned Married Catalyn out of duty not out of love. He married her to keep the river land in support of the Robert rebellion.. He had to spun the love of lady Ashara whom he fell in love with in the tourney in Harrenhal as much as he was in love with her.. I never comprised his stand but went home to catalyn whom he was duty bound to marry.

Instead Rob lost Winterfel (for his strategic blunder of trusting the Iron Islanders.. as in seriously who in their right mind does that? Iron Island understand only one language.. War and Violence)

He lost his most loyal bannermen the Karstarks (who are the strongest allies of starks for 1000s of years) by not being sensitive to the mood of Karstarks catalyn's freeing of Kingslayer.

He lost the chance to finish off the mountain by not communicating clearly his strategy to his men

and he lost the frey and brought dishonor to his house by breaking his vow to marry a woman (whose family are bannermen to the Lannisters at least in the book)

Robb was reckless and showed no understanding of geopolitics in westeros, he was arrogant to the point of even chaining his wolf who tried warning him many times. I hate to say this but Rob had it coming.

I would definitely recommend lubuntu for a netbook... it might not have the bell and whistle of a full featured DE but it will give u speed allowing you to get your work done with minimal fuss. I tried lxde from when the project got started way back 2007 and I knew the project had promise. Its gone a long way since then and even has an ubuntu spinoff. My advise is to resist the temptation to seek the path of blings as that bring it's draw back. For a low powered laptop u need all the performance you can squeeze out of it. Last thing you want is an OS that already uses 40% of system resources just to run.

Just installed Kubuntu 13.04 on my work laptop.. and boy Kde 4.10 has been a blessing to this old horse. seeing it run like as smooth as silk you would be mistaken to think the old machine is a core i* not an Intel Pentium. I am amazed how the KDE guys were about to fashion an extremely fast fluid modern desktop which gives the user extreme power and flexibility. As an andriod user integration with my device is on point. KDE 4.10 has support to for syncing google calendar, contacts and tasks with Korganiser (KDE PIM suits) out of the box.. (Facebook contact and calendar event are also supported for those on facebook OOTB).. Mounting my Nexus 4 also works OOTB.. and I heard native support for google drive is coming. Its amazing what a group of community guys can achieve in this times where everyone is busy creating solutions on the deskop.. solutions looking for problems. KDE stays true giving users the choice.

PoliticsRe: Nigerian Military Jet Crashes In Niger Republic by bigrovar(m): 12:55pm On May 07, 2013
This event is really sad. especially considering that the Alpha Jet have had a clean 100% record in all their service in Nigeria. This was the Jet that did over a 100 sorties in Liberia and Sierra Leone without a single incident. Yes they are suppose to be light attack Jets at Best but actually Trainers.. That NAF was able to deploy them as a ground attack role in Ecomog where our Boys had to do things with this bird that was thought impossible shows the level of skill and competency we have in NAF. Thanks to western Sactions and extreme paranoia of the IBB regime that left most of NAF platforms in a state of decay. The 24 Speedcat Jagua were retired even though non had clocked 100 flying hours after the Brit refused to provide needed smart bombs or refueling capability ... Yet despite all these same NAF still managed to airlift 9000 men and materials in a record 9 days to freetown (During the Freetown invasion) and provide air support for our troops.

It is my hope that we use this incidence as an opportunity to acquire superior fighter jet. Some may say the country has more important needs than acquiring fighter jets. I will point those who hold this view to see how France intervention in Mali went thanks superior air power that was able to dislodge MUJAO,AQIM and their co without a boot being on the ground. It is sad that the flagship of the Nigerian Airforce (currently the Chengdu J7) has a combat radius of just 400km meaning you they can't even fly from Lagos to Maiduguri without need for refueling. This is a shame.. When countries like Niger, Chad, have Sukhoi SU-25 in their Airforce Arsenal and even Uganda has 6 SU-30s the listed countries have a combined GDP that is not even up to that of Lagos.. As we battle terrorist in the northern frontiers and pirates in our seas what we need is a superior deep role fighter jet take the Su-30.. about 3500km combat radius able to fly from Sokoto and strike targets in Gao, Kidal, Timbuku and return to base all without breaking a sweat. It would also allow for proper monitoring of the troubled north east.. For a country with 50billion in reserve we surely can afford 2 squadron of Su-30 at 18M apiece. Heck we can even get from Ukrainian and Russian supplus 18 of which would cost us less than $300M

s3 repair for 55,000
note 2 for 75,000

Q

how much is this devices?
Being someone who has had his screen smashed and had to change it (DIY) I can confirm that the screens are indeed very expensive. The reason is that when you change the screen of your device.. you change not just the LCD and digitalizer but the whole from panel is changed.. heck the only thing not changed is the panel the battery and the front cover. In the case of the S3 I got the front screen for close to 40K and that was from back channels.. Changing from Samsung official is expected to cost more because you still retain your 2 years warranty.. so friends the best thing is not to drop your device.. don't give it to any gf or daughter or son.. keep it safe

sweet_gala: I think a newer version of the FN FAL family would suite us better DICON are already making the FAL, Nigerian troops are already used to it and it has the primary design features of the AK47. A carbine (NATO 5.56) version and battle rifle(7.62) would be perfect . I believe certain armies even have it equipped as a sharp shooter sniper rifle.
My brother it seems u have not read the experience of our forces in Ecomog. FN FAL really failed them.. it jams like a witch when needed the most. A soldier needs a weapon they can trust and like I noticed earlier AK is rugged. yes it is not photogenic but it is one mean son.. it doesn't jam ever effective and allows any of our soldiers who run out of bullets to easily feed on the enemies supply. We are also sending in special force paratroopers from our airforce who are equipped with Tavor rifles.
PoliticsRe: Pictures Of Nigerian Troops Arrival In Mali by bigrovar(op): 8:43am On Jan 19, 2013
toluene12: Sincerely, what business do we have in mali?
1. Has there been an established intelligence report that links boko haram with those malian islamist rebels or the whole thing is based on unfounded sentimental assumption.
If indeed SSS or DMI told us there are links, how reliable? I hope they aint doctored report. CIA said the same thing about iraq until we realized they were bogus report.
2. Now concerning the malian crisi;, is it just a routine domestic insurgency common to most african countries or a trans border spread of terror? Most african rebel groups are not known for promoting pan african ideology, all they care about is unseating the govt in power and controlling the state resources.
3. Even if the malian rebels are really into spreading their extremist ideologies across borders, mali is not our direct neighbour, we dont share a border with them. Why dont we allow algeria, niger, burkina faso, and mauritania (their direct neighbours) send in foot soldiers while we provide financial, technical, logistic and moral support. Besides francophone countries should take the lead role not anglophones.
I dont want us fighting other people's battle.
I understand ur concern but you have to understand we do not have any other interest to be in Mali other than to cut the head of the snake that has been hunting this nation. We are not in Mali because of Philanthropy for a long time now northern mali has become a terrorist haven Alqaeda in the Islamic Magreb, Movement for Jihad in West Africa and Ansar Dane .. all this groups have one hope. To spread their message of religious hate through out west africa. Gentlemen war has come to our doorstep and we have to raise up to the fight. Our east african brothers are alrady doing the same in Somalia where there have been able to put al-Shabaab on the run.. The combination of Kenya, Burundi, Uganda and Ethiopia decided not to sit idly by and watch terrorist take root in their region. The fact that we do not share a common bother with Mali makes no matter.. Terrorism is like a disease.. if allowed to fester in one part of the body would gradually spread and take over another part. We are fighting the good fight brothers the least u and I can do now is pray and hope that our brothers come home in their boots not body bags..
Algeria is already feeling the heat now am sure u are aware of what is already going on there. Niger has already promised troops and as allowed France and Nigerian Air force use their soil as launch base for their forces. Burkina Faso has always been unreliable even during the war in Sierra Leone and Liberia there have been known to always sleep with the enemy. Believe me there should stay at home. Nigeria can not afford that.

Rossikk: bigrovar can you confirm we have some fearsome battle tanks to deploy against these insurgents? I understand we have several hundred heavy duty tanks in the armoury.
Most like the T55 Tanks. There have been report that we have T72 tanks but known are yet to be sighted even though wikipedia has it listed as part of the hardware of the NA. One thing is sure though. We would be seeing 8x8 steyr pinguazers and some otokar cobra both of which would be very valuable for Mali ops

Concerning the AK47. I think its a good rifle for 3rd world conflicts. Its rugged and experiences less jam which would be very important for a desert conflict with lots of sands... another advantage of using the AK47 is should any of our guys ever run out of bullets its always easy to feed on the enemies supply.

texazzpete: Um...isn't that what the C-130s are there for? Lifting men and materiel?
There's no indication that armored vehicles are being airlifted in too, so what exactly is the complication in this?
Like most troop deployment. The men come before the heavy materials. This deployment is going to be in batches. What we are witnessing today is the arrival of the first batch of troops about a 100 of 1200.. soon we would see the deployments of about 8 8x8 steyr pinguazers and some otokar cobra.. even our Hind Mi24 and Mi35 Heli would eventually be deployed via the C130. Even the french are still bringing in hardware as we speak.

It's sad what we see here.. I guess it gives some people orgasm to say something bad about their country. Yes the F7 is not a top of the range jet. I foresee the alpha jets doing most of the sorties in Mali with the F7 acting as backup.. In any case the air would be completely handled by our french allies with their Mirage 2000. Either way that fact that we are there with what we have shows our commitment to the cause. It is my hope that the Government would use this opportunity to look into getting a deep strike role fighter jet for the nation. Something like the Sukhoi Su-30 would be a welcome development. This machine (with the capacity to simultaneously track 15 targets engaging 5 at the same time) can strike Gao, Timbuntu, or anywhere needed in Mali.. return home without breaking a sweat.

Overall I am impressed by the professional way our troops have been deployed and our airlift capability. The boys are well kitted in desert fatigue, blast helmet, and desert coloured boots. The would be met by about 60 unit of paratroopers (special forces) armed with tavor rile would arriving from PH aboard the G222 medium capacity military transport planes.

Addressing your points. when deploying in a conflict zone. come out fully armed and ready. Bamako as it stands now is not safe. We are getting reports of rebels infiltration has been reported in the city and rebels columns have been sighted less than 400km from bamako.. What is the rebels decide to give the Nigerian a special welcome? what happens then? When entering conflict zone one has to be ready for anything as the situation is very fluid and anything can happen. In one of the pictures you can see an unsmiling mean looking Soldier standing guard why is comrade disembark. That is how it's done. Make no mistake this is not a picnic.. The Nigeria army has commenced their deployment in Mali with arrival of the first batch of a projected 1200 strong force landed in mali on board the Lockhead C130 military transport plane from Kaduna. The Nigeria army kitted in desert fatigue, blast helmet, our Made-in-Nigeria DICON-Marom Dolphin flak jackets – product of Israeli-Nigerian military cooperation. would be joined by the tavor rile equiped airforce Quick Response Force special forces commandos who took off from Port Harcourt, aboard the G222 medium transport plane. Our troops would be supported by the alpha jet and F7. I have to say that I have been truly impressed by the professional way the ministry of defense have handled the deployment of our troops. That we are handling the transportation of troops and materials goes show the state of our airlifting capability.

PoliticsRe: Greatest Nigerian War General Of All Time by bigrovar(m): 12:23pm On Jan 08, 2013
Sorry to resurrect this thread but I could not help but post having read through every post that Only one mention of IMHO the greatest Nigerian General of our time and One of my all time Nigerian Hero - Brigadier General Maxwell Mitikishe Khobe.

I have done some extensive reading on Nigeria's Mission to Sierra Leone and Liberia and even spoken to Sierra Leonians and read accounts from many journalist who covered the war, and personal journals from infantry boot on the ground. One name which everyone in my reading always mention with respect and admiration is General Maxwell Khobe.
He is known as the general who always lead from the front armed only with his radio. During the Jan 6 1999 invention of Freetown while Major-General Timothy Shelpidi, his deputy, Brig. General Abu Ahmadu and a host of other middle level officers ran to Lungi Airport instead of staying back to lead their troops. Other junior officers hired speedboats and ran to Guinea to hide. It was Gallant officers like Brig. General Maxwell Khobe, Brig General Kpamber and a few others stayed behind and chose death before dishonor. They gallantly stayed back and fought the rebels while most of their officers ran away. sadly the sacrifices of these soldiers had never been acknowledged by the Nigerian military. Here is an account of from BBC's own Mark Doyle of his encounter with this great General
He arrived with his men, near the Freetown front line. According to a soldier who was there, he looked at the smoking battlefront and then began walking towards it, saying, as cool as a cucumber, "Gentlemen, let's go".

Khobe from every account was the type of general who always lead his men from the front. here is another account from New African, Jun 2000 by
Asante, Ben Khobe was a joy to watch at the front. He kept encouraging the troops to move forward. Several times we went to the front at first light only to discover that the men had withdrawn from the positions we left them the evening before. Many factors caused the pull back. Ammunitions were not delivered after they ran out or no food supplies came through. Other times rumours circulated that the rebels were coming with anti-aircraft guns, and lacking effective cover the men just pulled back. Wherever Khobe went, the troops seeing him surged forward and just kept going.

He was also witty and forward thinking. Like how he acted quickly in removing Foday Sankoh from the Pademba Maximum Security Prison where he was on death row. Had he not removed Sankoh, the fate of Sierra Leone and the outcome of the 1999 invasion would have been different.

Khobe was a professional soldier through and through turning down political appointment from IBB in 1985. He was named the chief of defence staff of the Sierra Leone army in recognition of his effort in the lighting action, of Ecomog troops who marched into the capital and seized the centre of Freetown including the State House with Koroma’s junta in flight.

He got injured from shrapnels which got lodged in his back on duty in freetown but only only went for treatment after the rebels signed a peace greement. His back hurt him most times but he walked with a limp and put up with the pain than abandon his post. Though the first operation was successful. Khobe later died from complications of this injury in london. Although largely unknown in Nigeria Khobe is widely popular in sierra leone where major roads are named after him. He in my opinion is the greatest Nigerian General. General Khobie was a brave soldier whose tough and wily tactics overcame the generally low level of training and equipment in the Nigerian army. He used tactics more familiar to the African terrain. These included the widespread use of surrogate local forces and the distribution of patronage. Above all, it involved an intimate knowledge of the enemy which perhaps only an African commander can muster in this sort of war.
The death of the Nigerian commander was such a blow to the confidence of many in Sierra Leone. To most ordinary people there he was a hero, the man who protected their elected President. I is a great Nigerian Hero and The greatest Nigerian General

SportsRe: Nigerian Premier League Rated Best In Africa For 2012 by bigrovar(m): 11:02am On Jul 18, 2012
The OP post shows the ranking is based on strength of the league not organization. It even goes to show the metric used in reaching their result which seem to be the performance of our clubs in African Competition (Which I have to say as improved over the years). Yes in terms of organisation the Nigerian League still lags behind (but the situation has greatly improved from the situation in the 90s) Yes south african league has better organisation but in terms of quality of their clubs in terms of strength.. they don't even come close to what we have in the Nigerian League

I think on a whole while the Nigerian league still has a long way to go. Things has definitely improved, the league is on TV and players welfare has definitely improved.. even the quality of playing surfaces and stadiums has improved from what it use to be.

Hi guys, I have been able to complete the registration and after a very horrid experiencing (the site kept failing) I was able to pay the exam fees (cost N2030 ) with my ATM card. However I have been unable to generate Schedule information whenever I input what I feel is the Unique ID number (which the website is not clear as to what that is) I just get a "We are unable to locate your record at this time and so scheduling cannot be completed. Please ensure that the information you provided is correct." error
Now the site is not quite clear on what constitute a "Unique ID:" On one hand it says its JAMB number and payment RECEIPT NO .. yet in another place it says its the jamb number. Please can anyone who has done this successfully and has been able to generate their schedule number be able to enlighten me on what exactly Unique ID mean. I would really appreciate. I am doing this for a colleague's son
