Nice but what happens after Christmas is over? NkanAkpanika: AKWA IBOM CHRISTMAS VILLAGE HAS GENERATED OVER N1BN WITHIN ONE MONTH
Since it was reopened on December 1, 2020, the Akwa Ibom Christmas Village has created a value worth over N1 billion, according to the State Government.
A statement by Orman Esin, the Commissioner for Tourism, Akwa Ibom State said that the Village was a testament to the fact that the state was ready for the business of tourism.
He stated this when a team of tour operators, stakeholders and journalists from Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt visited the state.
He lamented that the with the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown, the 2020 Christmas season looked bleak as annual events were cancelled all over the world, including the record setting annual 9999 event in Uyo, but the opening of the village had brought live back to the state and showcased the potential of the South-south state.
Akwa Ibom Christmas Village is set on a huge spread of land at the cultural centre, which allows for effective social distancing and respect of Covid-19 protocols, he said.
He stated that the rich tourism potential of the state was now ready for exploitation, stressing that the state had audited its tourism assets and would be launching out with programmes in the New Year to showcase them to the world.
The team visit to Akwa Ibom Christmas Village was led by Ikechi Uko, tourism expert Ambassador and members of the Seven Wonders of Nigeria project.
The visit was organised by Travellab an Uyo based travel company and were hosted by the State Tourism Ministry.
The team was taken on a tour of some locations in Akwa Ibom guided by Prof. Edem Eniang, a Biodiversity expert.
They visited the Itam sacred Monkey Sanctuary and from there went to Itu confluence town where Cross River and River Eniong meets. They visited the Mary Slessor Heritage Sites. After a tour of Ikot Abasi historical sites before lunch at Ibom Resort.
According to the Commissioner, the Akwa Ibom Christmas Village was the biggest Christmas event of its kind in Africa with the size of its location and potential for growth.
“Over 600 vendors attract thousands of visitors every evening. This will become a must visit place in Nigeria every December,” he said.

Even if they chose to fix the exchange rates, they can't do it in such a way as would affect their liquidity. Its just like the black marketers exchanging the dollar for say N475 and expect to sell at say N480 (banks per CBN regulation sells at N395 for example), who do you think the manufacturers or others in need of dollars would go to? A time would come when the black marketers would have their hands full and need to offload them, they would have to do so at a loss. thebosstrevor1: Hell no.
Who want to be at the mercy of a union of bdcs that can organize and fix price for their own benefit

The two evils here are the BDCs and the black marketers. The BDCs are easily controlled if the will is there but the black marketers, no. I don't know how the FG and the CBN are the evils here ...you might wish to elucidate more on that soulpeppersoup: What are the two evils here because the only evil here is the federal government in accomplice with the CBN. |

True and even at that, the BDCs are the worst but the better evil compared to having beneficiaries sell to the black marketers of which the BDCs form a large chunk. The only good thing is the CBN would be able to monitor the BDCs if they chose to. iwaeda: If we are a transparent country, Banks would have been better options. |
Politics › Re: Diaspora Remittances: Make Us Agents, BDCs To CBN by bigtt76(f): 10:19am On Dec 28, 2020 |
This in my honest opinion should've been the best option in the remittance policy released recently. iwaeda: The Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) has appealed to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to make Bureaux De Change (BDCs) payout agents for Diaspora remittances.
ABCON President Aminu Gwadabe, who disclosed this to financial journalists in Lagos at the weekend, said the apex bank should leverage on the over 5,000 licensed BDCs across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria to get the greenback seamlessly to beneficiaries.
Gwadabe said the proposal would provide a more convenient channel for Nigerians in the Diaspora to remit funds back to the country to boost economic development.
According to the ABCON boss, the annual remittance inflow of close to $25 billion is critical to Nigeria’s currency management and stability and should be given seamless flow to the economy.
Such funds, he added, would support Nigeria’s balance of payment position, reduce dependence on external borrowing and mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on foreign exchange inflows into the country.
He said BDCs remain the largest foreign currency operators in Nigeria, hence making them payout agents for Diaspora remittances will protect the market from forex cartels that refuse to follow rules set by the apex bank.
According to Gwadabe, the need to bring BDCs into the Diaspora remittances collection business has become exigent following reports of abuse by Mobile Money Operators (MMOs) opposed to paying remittances beneficiaries in dollars as mandated by the CBN.
On November 30, CBN stated that beneficiaries of Diaspora Remittances through International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) shall henceforth receive such inflows in foreign currency (US dollars) through the designated banks of their choice.
Gwadabe applauded the CBN’s directive, saying it would put an end to malpractices perpetually making the dollar scarce and keeping the local currency at the mercy of the greenback.

Perhaps a federal bill stating the percentage of federal allocation that must be spent on the masses Vs on governance is mooted and passed, the better. This is outrageous. LegendVibes: Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has presented 29 new Renault Koleos 2020 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) to chairpersons of the state’s customary courts, Igbere TV reports.
The governor said the vehicles were given to the judicial officers to enable them to discharge their functions unhindered.
He asked them to operate independently, without influence or intimidation.
https://www.facebook.com/672482079562653/posts/2379528398858004/
The governor, however, lamented the unwillingness of judicial officers to seek independence in discharging their duties, adding that the judiciary is only seeking independence in the control of their budget.
“Independence is carrying out your job without anybody influencing you,” Wike said.
Commissioner for Justice Zaccheus Adangor commended the governor for his benevolence and support for the judiciary and advised the beneficiaries to continue to administer justice without fear or favour.
On his part, president of the customary court of appeal in the state Gabriel-Nwankwo said the gifts would motivate the judicial officers to perform their work.

We are not yet dollarized. When we end up being dollarized, people would be forced to pay rent or other large payments in dollars. Liberia and Zimbabwe are two countries with dollarized economy because their local currency is worth less and not portable. BreconHills: The Nigerian economy has been dollarized for many years. Even our inflation is imported. No economy can import so much of its needs and claim currency sovereignty. That ship has sailed.

On point. Akainzo: I am totally aligned with your skepticism, however to prevent the sales at a loss, the BDC/BM will drop the exchange rates offered to people.
The IMTOs would have to credit the Foreign Reserve account of Nigeria with the equivalent USD amount since the payout is now in USD, thus CBN is only paying out what it has received and will continue to utilise its own USD for the official transactions. As more USD comes into play, the USD will have to find itself back to the banks.
The big elephant that no one is talking about is Domiciliary Accounts!!! Which other country allows ALL citizens to keep money in foreign currencies in their banks? That anyone can decide to bet against the Naira by purchasing USD and keeping in the bank, which adds no value to the economy, is the biggest travesty of the economy I have seen. |

I agree with your points absolutely, it would help drive down the exchange rates but it's also dependent on the equilibrium between the foreign reserve and the in flows. Mind you, the IMTOs are not flying in the forex to be disbursed (it would increase the wait time if the banks have to defend on this) so what they do is get from CBN and fulfill the demands locally at a cost to CBN. I still don't see the need paying out the dollars locally or even allocating to the BDCs. I don't know of any country that does this though Rather what the CBN would've done if they wish to allow dollar cash outs, mandate that the cash outs is done through the BDCs (they are the regulated black marketers of our time) who will in turn, either return it back to their bank accounts or sell to businesses. The money changer out there won't resell at a loss, so where's the gain? Akainzo: Except that persons receiving USD would also need to buy things, pay for stuff and generally continue living which is what majority of diaspora remittances are for.
So when the son sends money to the Mum, the Mum cannot afford to keep it under the bed or in a dom accounts as she has to live, buy food, pay rent, transport and pay for medicals. At that point, there would also be more USD looking for avenues to be changed to Naira.
Hopefully, that will drive the exchange rate down. Do not also forget that at this yuletide period, as more diasporas come home, they'd also need to change the USD to Naira to pay for hotels. And if hotels will have lower rates than BDC/Black Market too. |

Exactly but a bad policy. 1. It's recognizing the black market and legit helping to channel forex there. 2. The black market would get saturated at a point in time because no business man or woman would go there to source forex for business and the black marketers would not sell to the banks at the CBN rate 3. Naira in circulation would be mopped up at a point in time resulting in the dollarization of the economy (no one would want tk be paid in naira) 4. At the end of the day, beneficiaries would have no option but to exchange with the banks or hoard in their domiciliary accounts. Atk1nson: I think its a good step at bridging dollar scarcity, people can get black market returns on dollars sent, encouraging repatriation. |

All the international money transfer operators of which Worldremit one, are mandated by CBN to pay in dollars. If you want to transfer the oney to the beneficiay's bank account, it has to be a domiciliary account in the currency you are sending. No more automatic conversion into Naira at a pre-determined rate When the beneficiary withdraws from domiciliary account, s/he can just walk up to a money changer and get dollar to naira at N475 or higher instead of N390 official CBN's rate the banks offers Atk1nson: so what happens to the like of worldremit that directly credit a/c in naira?
