Car Talk / Re: The Reason Why That Your Tokunbo Car Keeps Overheating Here In Nigeria by billy187(m): 7:34pm On May 14, 2015
abatically:

U are right but only to some extent. A car with thermostat removed and fan spinning constantly might eventually get to its operating temperature on a hot day but might take up to 30 mins to 1hr of driving. So what if I commute only short distances, say I drive for only 15-20 mins, that means I will constantly run rich and my car will never get to it's optimum temperature, not good for my engine.

U should also know that a car with thermostat removed, fans spinning constantly, coupled with a double cell radiator WILL NEVER get to its operating temperature no matter how long u drive it. Trust me I know what I'm saying.

Well, i think it would-eventually.....but will definitely not remain there. I remember when my Focus had no thermo. The poor thing could reach optimal temp in 20ish minutes of traffic jam- only to go back to cold when i'm cruising at 120kmph on the highway! grin

Very interesting thread! Well, I used to live in the USA..in the Northern State of Montana, where we routinely experienced sub zero weather. We moved down to Ghana a while ago and brought along a '97ish subaru outback and a '99 Chevy Suburban. I knew NOTHING of tropicalization but my cars thrived in the blistering heat and standstill traffic that plagued Accra in the early 2000s.

About 2-3 years ago I bought a Ghana used '03 Ford Focus Se wagon after selling off my other beloved rides. This car was cool and all-but not as reliable. I had to immediately replace the battery....which the owner swore was less than a year old..and from how things look; another battery replacement is imminent!! It took FOREVER to heat up and loved overheating for some reason and it made a piffling 18mpg-something my 5.7v8 Suburban could exceed!!!

I took it for diagnosis and behold......that's where i learnt of tropicalization. Ive since done the best i can to reverse things: though it's now left with my direct fans, which is waay to complex for me to reverse- my mech claims this setup is the cause of my terrible battery life. Anyways, car now reaches optimal temp in 3mins and makes like 20-21mpg; not perfect but better than 18mpg!!!

Apart from the suspension that is going bad ...i cant help but link every single problem i've ever got on my Focus to this 'tropicalization' you speak of, op.

Hmmm...imagine the petrol you'll burn going up that bridge.

I'd totally go on that bridge though...on four conditions.
1) No naija-spec trucks uphill
2) No naija-spec trucks downhill
3) No noise pollution meter- so i can scream gleefully like a little kid when descending.
4) an active health/life insurance grin

Yeah, the farthest i know so far is -5.00 , but then -1.00 will be a very marked improvment over -6.00.

First got my glasses in 2010 in New Delhi from Primus Hospital, I changed the lens in 2013 in Kubwa General hospital where I requested for a photo sensitive type lens.
The aches diminishes after some minutes of removal, say 15-30minutes.

Yep, sounds like a bad prescription. I wear photos myself and have no problems so far. See your eye doc and let him do a comprehensive diagnosis ( refraction, binocular vision-the works!!) and let him prescribe another for you.

Good luck!!

I think we are trying to say similar things here

Oh yes, we are coming from the same perspective, was just adding to your post-didnt mean to sound sarcastic at all. I was actually complementing the extent of your knoledge as far as the eye is concerned.

So i ask again, are you an eye specialist?.

very true.. allergy most often.. TBUT these days is ignored by many of these girls fixing cosmetic CLs

I know right? Plus with all those fake eyelashes+ caked up makeup, they brew a perfect environment for bacteria which comes along with keratitis and conjunctivitis!

You really know your onions though-are you an eye specialist?

your ophthalmologist is wrong.. contact lenses are better for higher powers such as yours.. moving the CL to the corneal plane would reduce the convergence effect of the high minus on the visual system..
secondly, contact lenses would be more suitable if the powers are different with up to -1.50DS or contains cylinder power of up to -1.25DC, as the CL would reduce the chances of different image sizes in both eyes(anisometropia).. summary be say, CL is better for you.. go and get one from a reliable practitioner

Maybe so: but his opthalmologist might be right though. Maybe he has an allergy, a bad tear break-up time or is even predisposed to keratitis- all bad news for a contact lens wearer.

Oh so you're a medic and your trying to rub grease and engine oil on your robes? cheesy

Wow... good one bro.

You need to see the head splitting headache I normally get when I still used my glasses.
The headache was in the bridge between my eyes and right from there it runs up thru my forehead and also behind my ear. It was huge punishment plus constant watering of my eyes then.

The engine grease just wont rub out : no matter how hard i try! grin

Anyways....

Does the headache go as soon as you remove the glasses?

Where did you get your glasses? How long have you been wearing them?

Looks like there might be an error in your prescription- spectacles arent supposed to come with headaches.

Hey there Op! 'Optometrist' here. grin Have you considered Orthokeratology? It improves your vision through the use of a therapeutic contact lens you wear only at night- the contact reshapes your cornea so you don't need glasses or contacts throughout the day. And its reversible!

Where would you be without the roadside mechanic? He's a very useful vital tool and you all use him so let's stop the derogatory remarks. Correct him instead. The original kazeem now re-installs thermostats and connects fans back to factory specs.

Not every roadside mech is a 'kazeem' per say........I think some actually go out of their way to stay up with the times.....just as much; 'kazeem' can pretty much exist in a fancyass mech shop-ive witnessed kazeems over there with fancy .embossed overalls that dont know crap.

Nyc writeup OP! you gotta love that ending tho. grin

I have been following your advise on issues people post and am very impressed with your dept knowledge of Lexus and Toyota.

My in law has issues with her Rav4 2001 model. The issues are check engine displayed on the dash board and gear drags from 1-2 before moving on although I have instructed her to scan the vehicle first before my advise. Will post the fault codes after the scan.

Thanks.

Hmmmm....sounds like that notorious ECM-trans issue that affects Mk2 rav4s ....uh..oh.

UPDATE ON THE VEHICLE.
My nuts were thightly bolted then it never loosened again.. A rewire adviced the battery is cool and alternator cool, said cos of the accident and parking for few days without the battery charging weakened it, He advised I go on a long journey or drive for long to charge, still watching that though but there seem to be improvement, the malfunction in speedometer and RPM is caused by wrong wiring by a Kazeem when tryna fix my horn but I am not skilled enough to do the DIY Gazzuzz recommended and all these Kazeems never listen when you tell them things, they tell you not to teach them their job, soon I will find a way to try it.. At the moment, everything seem fine just my Hooked sit belt due to the accident..
Thanks for the advise!!!

Everything as in....everything? No lights angrily shining at you from the dashboard?

Seems kazeems round your side of town are pretty insistent too!! grin Im in Ghana and my Ghana-bought car of two years unfortunately still has its fans running direct for the same reason. Managed to pop in a thermo though.
Car Talk / Re: Kazeem. by billy187(m): 11:48pm On Apr 25, 2015
Overheating? And they've salvaged the tires already? Did kazeem pop the hood? How did it look in there?

I would totally buy this car, provided the fellow accepts a sensible offer. If you have a reliable means of importing larger parts like the transmission from the US...why not? Parts of older models like this are ridiculously cheap at junk yards.

What do naija mechs have with that camry engine? I bet dem swap am into caterpillar D9 sef.

I nearly bought an '05 opel astra from a fine fellow a couple of years ago in Ghana. Body was fine and all but when i popped the hood....there sat a 1990ish Astra engine in all its carburrated glory....I muttered some excuse of wanting to pee-and never came back. ended up with a Ford Focus with the 2.0 zetec.

But that focus up there? poor, poor thing.
